  • At last the exec liveried power cars have been released. Really good to have two HSTs running on the layout. Also served for a good excuse to get all the power cars and coaches weathered.

    Great effort as ever. You brought back memories of both Finsbury Park and Old Oak Common 31/4s all washed out flat matt pale blue due to their allocation on ECS hauled stock. The powercar drop light you refer to as a guard's window, maybe to assist drivers using the secndary controls that were originally fitted to the first HSTs for depot / shunt moves.
    I'm always impressed by your timing of real train overdubs on your vids too.

    They look brilliant running together. Twin dragons!
    I've always admired your fearless attempts (and success!) at fixing mistakes that most modelers would not even notice.
    I've just got myself a Dapol HST set in IC/S livery, along with three more coaches. Then realised the coaches are loco hauled and have buffers. I didn't even notice when looking at them for the first time out of the box, and later realised Dapol clearly display it on their product descriptions. WHOOPS! Looks like a 47 is about to join my fleet...
    Now I've got to wait for them to release some more HST-hauled MK3's in IC/S.

    Two excellent HSTs I like the way you have them in good length, 2+7 also you run them nicely rather than just hammering them round the layout, to me that adds so much, the way in which trains are operated

    Your layout is a real inspiration for my own and this was the livery of my era of train interest.
    I'm glad I managed to get a pair of these (despite the silver decals) before they go out of stock. But it was rarely seen on a complete set. I certainly never saw one out of St. Pancras or Paddington during the 80's. They were all mixed with blue/grey coaches/power cars. That's how I'm planning on running mine. Just need to get a rake of Blue/grey coaches now! :)

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  9 лет назад +1

      Kingswood Junction Thanks for the comment. My layout in is set 1989 and by this time in Paddington and the south west it was rare to see blue grey mk3s. Was common to see the exec and swallow power cars and coaches mixed up though.

    Really excellent video as always.I wanted a Lima Swallow HST as a child, but I was into model railways just as privatisation was coming in and I never found a full set of Lima Swallow Mk3s!
    As an adult when I got back into the hobby one of the first things I bought was the Hornby Swallow HST (they'd been released long before I got into it so it was a hell of a job tracking them down). I went for Lima Mk3s though as they were generally easier to find and more accurate in terms of details than the Hornby ones. I''ve got an Exec HST on order as well, but I'll be running that with blue/grey Mk3s as per a photo I've seen of a WR XC set in 1989.
    I just wish I had somewhere to run them!! Your layout is honestly the kind of thing I dream to have one day.

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  9 лет назад

      sub39h Thanks, blue grey coaches in 1989 did appear in HST sets but it was becoming a rare thing. Most were in exec or swallow by then so I went for an exec set. I would like some blue grey mk3s but I don't have the space for a third rake.

    Fantastic weathering, just like I remember them. You could mix them up too, I remember the change over period of liveries. Blue power cars with Executive coaches, 50/50 split, one swift with 1 Exec power car etc. I Wish I had the room to run a HST set.

    Well done on the HST there and thanks for taking me on a trip back to my childhood days as well :). I remember when these HST's gave me sore eardrums when I was a kid as they sounded very much like a DC-10 powering up. Still, I am enjoying the VP185's in my area as East Midlands Trains use them in their HST's over the MTU which is very quiet in comparison. I am grateful that the HST is still with us and didn't get scrapped in place of those horrible Voyagers and Meridian units which are just glorified buses on rails :). Here is a like from me for the epic video.

    Lovely job of the weathering, very realistic. In my view the old HST's are still the best on the rails today. Been on a few of the newer intercity type trains, cramped seating, noisy air conditioning. I much prefer the hst mk3 coach. Damned annoying you had to mess about and change the Inter City decal, very surprised that slipped through quality control.

      Hi Richard ordered mine from Hornby now should arrive next week at some point. I have a question for you, was talking to guy from Warley MRC last night and he suggested I needed a bus wire rated at 13 amp for running 4 trains at the same time, is this a bit excessive any advice will be appreciated as I've used 4 amp in the past many thanks Andy

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  9 лет назад

      Andy Hudson That is quite a bit but no harm in doing it. A oo gauge train will draw an absolute max of 1 amp while running. Most decoders max output is 1 amp and some are quite a bit less. I used 2 core house wire for my bus as it was cheap. Take off the white insulation and inside are two solid core wires you can use. That stuff will take well over 13 amps.

    The HST looks good! Especially that weathering! I had a question for you, and I didn't really know where to ask it, so I'm asking here. I've just bought a coach and the railway it represents has multiple versions of the model I've bought. The newer coaches have different window layouts and the model I have has an older window layout; one that isn't as accurate. I can make my model look like a newer coach by blocking out some of the windows in certain areas. I was wondering if you had any methods or tips that I could use if I wanted to cover up/remove them?(i.e.fill in etc.)

    Hi. I do love the HST's! I just tracked down a HST in Swallow livery this week as I was sick fed up waiting on Hornby to re-release it....BNIB on ebay (cost me an arm and a leg!). However I notice the intercity Beige on the lower side of the last release of the inter-city125 coaches is a slightly different shade than the HST Swallow power car (example is 8.43 in the video). The power cars are a bit more creamy/yellowy compared to the newer inter-city 125 releases. I see a slight difference on your ones too. The new shade is certainly more scale accurate. Still hope Hornby will get a Swallow HST and coaches in the 2018 catalogue....I am frankly tired of asking them lol. Cheers. Dave

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  7 лет назад +1

      Cheers Dave. I'm remember buying my swallow HST in about 2011. Cost me £105 and was the very last one in stock at hattons. Getting the coaches for it was far more difficult at the time. The intericity livery like NSE changed over the years and I know there are at least two versions of the grey/black. Could possibly be the same case for the beige too.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark 7 лет назад

      Yeah I seem to remember this with the black and grey....even as a boy I remember Hornby's 'shorties' MK3 varying in colours. However I suspect the beige was 'corrected' in around 2013 as Hornby had been getting comments that it was too 'custard yellow'. I recall comments such as these in the magazines! Even so, the Swallow HST will do me for now...running with a mixed rake, as was seen during the mid to late 80's! I just hope Hornby re-release this livery, inc a full rake of coaches before the price of the HST pack goes north of £400!!!...at this rate, that's about 2 years! Worrying! Lets just say I paid 'almost' three times what you paid for your HST in 2011! ouch.

    I love the HST....you cant beat it. I take it the blue grey livery is too early for your period on the layout? I now have two blue grey (western and eastern power cars) and the exec, albeit with the silver text lol.
    You've done a convincing job of the weathering...Ijust wish I had the balls to take my airbrush to mine....but at £200 a pop I don't want to feck it up lol.
    You never know, Hornby might release another exec power car with correct colour text in the future...I am sure they will as these particular ones have sold like hot cakes! I just hop Hornby do another release of the swallow cars next year...they are due again!....that would complete my fleet of HST's and just make my year! lol
    Good job Richard. Good job indeed.

      DaveClass47 Hi Dave. Blue grey coaches were still about in 1989 but not in great numbers. I think that last blue grey power cars were gone in 1987 (they went straight to swallow). I wouldn't mind a blue grey set of Mk3s but can't justify a third rake of them. I'll be mixing and matching my power cars over time as per BR. Weathering them isn't too bad. I find most weathering jobs quite easy now. You just need some practice, freight stock is the best place to start. Cheers

    Really nice to see the power-cars in that livery and your weathering really captures the look of the real thing in everyday action. One thing though, from some images I've seen shouldn't the buffet carriage in that set be the other way around so that the seating section is part of standard class? As the seating area does not yet have the yellow stripe above it denoting first class.

      I think I may have seen that one a couple of times in our depot in seansea. They're replacing all the hst's with iet's and sending the hst up to Scotland with a new tarten interior. Shame really, the hst r far better than the new trains.

    How did you do the weathering??

  • @10reubenl
    @10reubenl 7 лет назад

    Once you've painted the track, do you still have to clean it like you did when it wasn't painted?

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  7 лет назад

      Yep, clean it as normal.

    • @10reubenl

      Does that not scratch the paint off?

      The trains wont run with any paint on top of the rails. Its removed when I weather the track. See my track weathering video.

    I've seen Hornby advertising these for £210! Wouldn't mind having one but certainly not for such a price...

      Humbolt136 The wage rises for factory workers in china has caused all the models to go up significantly in price. The days of buying a loco for £60 are over. I paid £188 for this HST and £105 for the other one in 2011. It took them 2 years to release this new one so I had plenty of time to save up.

      EverardJunction Hmm I guess your right... Question is how long until its worth bringing production back to the UK?

    Why did a 7-car train need a locomotive at both ends?

      +Nathaniel Nifong To reduce journey times by going as fast a possible.

      also having a streamlined end reduces drag as there is less turbulent air flow

      To do 125 MPH

    • @TheRip72
      @TheRip72 8 лет назад

      A single loco producing enough power would be very heavy & cause a lot of track damage, especially at 125mph.

    • @gwrdriver1660
      @gwrdriver1660 6 лет назад

      Another reason was that when the train got to a terminus station and had to go back the other way, you didn't have to do a run around move with the loco, which would also have to be turned so that the pointy end with the driving cab was facing forwards😐😉

    I've always wondered... Why have you given sound a dodge? You've got a lot of stock and have featured most other gadgets. But I've never seen you dabble with sound decoders. Not your cup of tea?
