If you really wanted to go all out there's the Custom Shop Vs for like 5 grand, and the Korinas for like 10k. All better options if you ask me.
Unless original 58 Les Paul's and Vs or 54 Teles and 61 strats become available at a price the working man can afford (not going to happen) I think it's highly unlikely relics are going anywhere, you may not like them, but sales suggest millions do
@@hughjarrsemy question is, damage to a new guitar decreases it's value. It doesn't with a relic, i would guess. At what point does that even out and the damage jist now equates to reliced?
@@_oe_o_e_ Well I'm a working man and have a few custom shop (Fender) relics, but being lefty Gibson aged guitars are not really available, apart from a very few Murphy labs and not many make it over to England 😕
@@halcooper3070 because as I'm sure you've experienced the first ding on your new guitar is heartbreaking, you don't get that with a pre aged guitar, I have some Fender custom shop relics, that doesn't mean I want a chunk out of my PRS custom 22 10 top, they're different guitars and serve different purposes, if Eddie had used a battered PRS you can bet your bottom dollar PRS would be selling relics (no matter what Paul might tell you) and people would be buying them
Just from setting intonation, my strings have little dents from the old saddle position, no way those saddles should be paired with a tremolo, it will never stay in tune.
Price is crazy but as relics go, that is a nicely created beasty. Move the decimal point so its 5.5k and I would be tempted, but I also appreciate the amount of time and craft that go into creating an art piece like that so I'm just pleased to get to see a Trogly teardown 😎
Right… I mean I always say how much I hate relic jobs. But this guitar has a cool vibe to it. I mean, if I had the money maybe I would pay a guy $2000 to do this to my guitar. Or I could just do it myself… The trickiest thing is just having a metal shop make a new pickguard for you. Anyway… But the point is that it’s an art piece and yada yada yada, and since you’re done, paying for medical school… You have plenty of disposable income.
Metal inlays would probably make sanding the radius into the fretboard a huge pain in the ass. And did you notice the lack of tooling marks on the fretboard? It's a dead giveaway that Gibson did not do the finish work on this guitar. It would be great if Gibson gave two shits about quality control. I am not convinced they are even familiar with the concept.
+1 about the metal inlays and sanding issues. As for the lack of tool marks on the fingerboard, most of those marks on a Gibson are specifically from filing the fret nibs into the binding. This guitar's neck is unbound, so there would likely be no finishing filing other than dressing the fret ends.
@@hkguitar1984 I didn't think about the binding/nibs. Maybe Gibson should just do away with fret nibs since they can't seem to finish them properly without chewing up the board. I have never been a fan of the nibs anyway.
@@jondough76 I agree with you. I think its just a Gibson tradition. IMHO, they should only offer the fret nibs on Historics and Re-Issues. That is just my $.02 Cents. That said, I've a 1986 Les Paul Custom with almost 40 years of regular playing wear. The fingerboard binding still looks great, however, due to the binding the edge of the fingerboard lacks the rolled edge/worn-in feel of my older Fender guitars. If I were to custom order a Les Paul (Standard or Custom) I'd omit the fingerboard binding and request the edges rolled over. Again, another $.02 Cents from me!
09:37 - Hey Austin, you mentioned that the bridge on this guitar is an ABR-1 with a wire retainer, but there doesn’t appear to be a wire, or the holes drilled into the bridge where the wire would be installed. Can you please explain where the wire is on this bridge, or were your comments in the video incorrect?
Great breakdown & demo, Austin...I'm not a big fan of flying Vs so forgive me...Definitely an ultra, heavy-aged axe. IMO, the edges are worn too much. This would be a guitar that the owner gave ZERO care: never cleaned it, stepped on it, did Jimi Hendrix/SRV 'floor routines' when they played 'Third Stone from the Sun'...I agree this is only worth about 10 grand due to not staying in tune.

I knew guitarists in other bands who would carry their Gibson Les Pauls to the gig in an Epiphone case. I could only afford Epiphones so it was by default! 😂
Interesting guitar. The Bigsby mounting bar itself looks a bit "phoned in" to me. A plain gauge steel strip. Could have been a bit more substantial and interesting.
Looks like the "wear" has had burnt umber rubbed into the grain then stripped off with a solvent. An old furniture aging trick but can be very effective if done right.
I like it but would want two pickups in my Flying V 1958 style. I don't need all the wear and tear, I can do that myself! But it looks cool as hell and sounds good!
Austin I mean this in the kindest way, run a vacuum over your setup table, then spray some windex on a paper towel and give it a good rub down. That close up of the screws made me squirm lol.
1) Big like for the "first fret neck depth" t-shirt. Funny thing, I always skip that part, but the shirt is very cool! 🙂 2) The "skull" knobs look more like Darth Vader to me 😛

I gig regularly, am in five different bands. I play instruments from all ages and none of them look like or ever will look like most of these nonsense relic guitars. I'm playing a 1939 lap steel that looks mint. I'm playing a 1969 Gibson SG it looks like it has moderate normal play wear. I'm playing a Les Paul copy from the 80s that looks great and I've got newer guitars also. I take care of them. I wiped them off and I don't bang them around or knock them over. For fuck sake.
I've a 1986 Les Paul Custom that is worn almost as much as this Flying V! I also wipe my guitars down and keep them in the cases, stuff just happens when you're flailing around!
Badass-looking axe for sure. And for $55K, not many buyers are going have it as a player, so tuning issues are probably unimportant (but also easily remedied by a competent tech or luthier).
I personally find the concept interesting. It looks like what someone would make in the post apocalypse. Like imagine the world ended just before the invention of the floating tremolo bridge system or the Floyd rose bridge, and a wasteland bard wanted a trem on a V guitar. This is what I’d imagine. Although I’d rather make something like that myself than pay 55K for it
Salutations Austin! Interesting collectors piece, I certainly wouldn’t pay $55,000 dollars for such an instrument, I would just pick up an affordable one and just customise it myself, for a lot less, even if I could afford such an expensive instrument, which I cannot. Ideally, when I purchase a new guitar, I prefer it to look new, I don’t get the appeal of an artificially aged guitar directly from the manufacturer, but if it is an actual vintage instrument that has some actual wear and tear then that is a completely different story, but a brand new instrument it makes little sense to pay a premium for it, in my opinion. Whoever purchased this instrument was awesome to allow you to examine it and share it with us all! I hope they are happy with it. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸🎄
BRO! You need to learn what a Luthiers Knot is at the tuning peg and once stretched out your strings won't detune unless there's is a nut or saddle hang-up.
real condition 4 guitars are pretty rare. the people who have had enuf of them in hand to study are even rarer. this is why so many relic jobs are bad..the Murphy labs guitars are close but the cost way to much. the fender custom shop dose some of the most convincing relic jobs ive seen but like the Murphy labs they cost alot and both still have giveaways that their relics. this looks pretty close to a real 50s v in the aging. the one thing all three have in common are that a decade of hard playing will make them even cooler looking!

Since I've been able to hold onto guitars for 30 years or more I figured it is a waste to own a poly with I could actually be honestly wearing in a lacquer guitar. My 2000 Strat is unbelievable rare, however it still has a poly finish which really kind of bothers me. In 2023 I plan to sand off the finish and send the body out to be finished by Bloom Doom guitars. For that much $, it should have an original PAF 🤷♂️
I think it's possible and it is my wish that relic guitars value will just tank like hell in the future.
Unless original 58 Les Paul's and Vs or 54 Teles and 61 strats become available at a price the working man can afford (not going to happen) I think it's highly unlikely relics are going anywhere, you may not like them, but sales suggest millions do
@@hughjarrsethey cant afford those either tho
@@hughjarrsemy question is, damage to a new guitar decreases it's value. It doesn't with a relic, i would guess. At what point does that even out and the damage jist now equates to reliced?
@@_oe_o_e_ Well I'm a working man and have a few custom shop (Fender) relics, but being lefty Gibson aged guitars are not really available, apart from a very few Murphy labs and not many make it over to England 😕
@@halcooper3070 because as I'm sure you've experienced the first ding on your new guitar is heartbreaking, you don't get that with a pre aged guitar, I have some Fender custom shop relics, that doesn't mean I want a chunk out of my PRS custom 22 10 top, they're different guitars and serve different purposes, if Eddie had used a battered PRS you can bet your bottom dollar PRS would be selling relics (no matter what Paul might tell you) and people would be buying them
I just want to buy those knobs and put them on my LP, they're awesome!
4k each. 😉
$55.000? Well throw me down the stairs my bowling ball! 🤣
Great to see, thanks for the review - and to your vieweer for making it happen, beautiful guitar
Just from setting intonation, my strings have little dents from the old saddle position, no way those saddles should be paired with a tremolo, it will never stay in tune.
Yeah, Well…looks like I’ll be hanging on to my Epi JB “Amos” Flying V …forever..$55k for that Gibby..Never Neverland again guitar!!
@@JohnnyArtPavlou Haha yes, I could see House MD rocking this in his office 😂
G have been making all sorts of interesting high end stuff these last two years.......good on 'em, love their work. Cheers Trogly!!
So....when's that museum open?
09:37 - Hey Austin, you mentioned that the bridge on this guitar is an ABR-1 with a wire retainer, but there doesn’t appear to be a wire, or the holes drilled into the bridge where the wire would be installed. Can you please explain where the wire is on this bridge, or were your comments in the video incorrect?
Not only brass pickguard screws. Bridge saddles and screws look like brass too, it would explain why heavier than normal.
I would happily pay $15k for one, if I had a few million, I would have no problem paying the asking price.
When they won’t stay in tune like that, check the nut. If you end up thinking it’s not the nut, you can check a few other things. Then fix the nut. 😂
Nothing like beating up a cool guitar and charging an arm and a leg for it.
Hello. Best guitar review channel. Wanna visit the museum when it’s ready
Hi trogly…
Great guitar…
I’ve noticed your having trouble with tuning on this one , it’s the nut is sticking
Pretty sure .
Radio shack has what’s called synthetic lube
One drop on the slot of each string at the nut will allow the strings to slide properly over the nut and stop friction ..
allowing the guitar to stay in tune by removing the friction of the string over the nut …it will last the life of the string 2/3 months…try it you’ll like it’s worked for me ..
gigging for many years
I use on all my guitars 🎸
Peace bro great show lone time fan ….
On display inside Glass case, at a McMansion.
I knew guitarists in other bands who would carry their Gibson Les Pauls to the gig in an Epiphone case. I could only afford Epiphones so it was by default! 😂
That pro tip is a great idea
...yah except now everyone on youtube knows it so it won't work anymore?
@@jimmyjames2022 Hopefully the odds of a 20K Gibson being in an Epiphone box are too low to be worth risking your job over lol might be 1 in 500
@@radfury23g32I bought a maton bb1200 and it showed up in a f'ing es335 box giant Gibson logo I was so glad it was at my door and not stolen
How do you fix the weight distribution on a V? slap a bigbsy on it. *edit (what tuning)
love that this custom doesn't stay in tune and gunks up your fingers.
Gibson prices are absurd I'll give you 5 k period!!!
Excellent review! Thanks whomever got it and was kind enough to let Trogly’s review and document it. So freaking cool.
Not sure but in my opinion, your recent SG has better bridge sounds.
Really enjoyed the Chuck Berry Trog
Austin I mean this in the kindest way, run a vacuum over your setup table, then spray some windex on a paper towel and give it a good rub down. That close up of the screws made me squirm lol.
1) Big like for the "first fret neck depth" t-shirt. Funny thing, I always skip that part, but the shirt is very cool! 🙂
2) The "skull" knobs look more like Darth Vader to me 😛
Nothing like paying 55k for a guitar relic-ed to make it look 60 years old to keep it at home in "mint" condition
For case info @G&G quality case company. 🤘🏼
So,how do you know if your guitar got damaged in shipping?
That bigsby sounds great
Love almost everything about that, but no neck pickup ruins it for me.
I play sitting down a lot do to a motorcycle accident so a V is about the toughest for me. I can play them like a goober. As for as relived guitars it is done very well, they are just not my thing. I don’t mind old used guitars, I just don’t like the idea of faking one.

Yeah, but taking care of your guitar and wiping it down every night isn't rock'n'roll is it? Have you seen Keefs, Rory's and Stevie's
I've a 1986 Les Paul Custom that is worn almost as much as this Flying V!
I also wipe my guitars down and keep them in the cases, stuff just happens when you're flailing around!
@@hughjarrseNot rock'n'roll....just disgusting.....🤮
Presume the husks were selected from the wood stage rather than from existing blank bodies ????
A little expensive but it's pretty cool.
Badass-looking axe for sure. And for $55K, not many buyers are going have it as a player, so tuning issues are probably unimportant (but also easily remedied by a competent tech or luthier).
It's a great demo, but why would having the Bigsby be prioritized over having the neck pickup and the available controls?
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I LOOK TO A FLYING V AND A AGED MODEL AND THINK THATS IS REALLY COOL ......👏👏👏👏👏
What amp do you use on the demos? It sounds different form every other amp I’ve heard
I believe he is using a Marshall reissue Bluesbreaker combo.

Love your show Trogs!👍
This overpriced morphed Gibson guitar, not so much. Just my opinion.
I like how they include picks and a strap, as if the customer base for this would ever pick it up off their wall hangar lol
I'm glad it exists for other people but I would neither buy nor play that for $500 let alone $55,000 good god how ugly
BRO! You need to learn what a Luthiers Knot is at the tuning peg and once stretched out your strings won't detune unless there's is a nut or saddle hang-up.
I'm ok with the aging on this guitar, but definitely not a fan of the custom metal etc... reminds me of if "Affliction-clothing made a guitar".
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😅
What's that music playing at 6:15 seconds in? It's a Spooky Blues you can hear in the background.

real condition 4 guitars are pretty rare. the people who have had enuf of them in hand to study are even rarer. this is why so many relic jobs are bad..the Murphy labs guitars are close but the cost way to much. the fender custom shop dose some of the most convincing relic jobs ive seen but like the Murphy labs they cost alot and both still have giveaways that their relics. this looks pretty close to a real 50s v in the aging. the one thing all three have in common are that a decade of hard playing will make them even cooler looking!

@@cataclysmicconverter I always thought the Rory Gallagher was awesome looking.

I heard a saying the other day, "He is not Thee". We are all different (thank goodness).
@@cataclysmicconverter Yeah, I think I read it was stolen and then found a couple weeks later along the road in a ditch or someone's garden! Since it had rained the whole time the guitar was gone they figured it had been out in the rain the entire time! They had to dry it out completely, and it still worked!
I'd read that the reason the paint was all gone was due to Rory's body Ph being so acidic, thus his sweat waslike acid to the lacquer finish!
the 1961/early 1962 Stratocasters are my favorite.
@@cataclysmicconverter Yeah, your MIM lacquer instruments are fantastic. Our Son purchased a '50s inspired Fiesta Red MIM Strat with the rosewood fingerboard, not only is it beautiful it is also extremely lightweight.
As of 2022 I only own one poly finish guitar, and that is my 2000 American Deluxe Stratocaster. The rest of my guitars are all lacquer.
Also, except for the Strat I am currently building all my other Stratocasters have had the maple fingerboard! It is amazing that even though I know I prefer rosewood I still seem to have a maple fingerboard version!
Where can someone get a pickup ring like that?
patprop74 mentioned in the comments that it may have been 3D printed!
I agree, it is a very cool dogear mount for a humbucker.
I wish I could just buy that tin. Do they make them still?
