This album was apparently heavily influenced by the melodic black metal band Dissection. To anyone curious about entry level black metal check out the first two Dissection albums, especially if you like this Trivium album's melodic riffs. (Heck Matt blatantly stole one of the leads for 'Into the mouth of...' from Dissection's song "The Somberlain".)

Awesome playing my man. Some of these riffs are just ferocious. Ascendancy is such a phenomenal album and it still amazes me that Matt was only 19 when this was released
Pretty sure I heard a few times that some of the songs were originally written for Ember to Inferno but they didn't make the cut at the time. I believe Dying in Your Arms was one of those songs. Don't quote me on that though because I don't remember where exactly I heard that from.
@@miskatonicuniversityavclub202 Yeah I have to agree, that was the worst song on the album and It also played here in Sweden on radio all the time at the time. They have never played a Trivium song before that song nor after, but that song was ok to play on the radio, the worst one =(
@@JamieSlays nope, Matt said so himself in an interview ( look up the wiki page for ascendancy) "The entire Ascendancy album was originally recorded in Drop Db tuning. However, because of an error, everything ended up out of tune, so the band tuned up to Drop D"
The recording of Ascendancy was fucking perfect. I wish they kept that studio sound. Drums were amazing sounding, guitars obviously as well. That kit was just perfect sounding though, I can't get over it. Whoever mixed the album deserves a golden BJ. hahaha
Didn't even learn Corey's part right for Rain, didn't learn the intro to Gunshot correctly either... Yeah I can't watch this any further. Fucking Yikes.
Bro am glad i found your channel time ago, you are so talented And your videos are so interesting And fun to watch, keep on going lml i'll be here when your channel grow more
I see Trivium, Ascendancy, and Jamie Slays all in one picture, I click. Now this goes to show that the Drop D riffs were heavy because of how Trivium wrote them and riffs can sound chunky no matter what tuning.
That swirl Ibanez looks so dope. Can you please give me one of your Ibanez? Please please, I want it so bad but can’t afford it, please give me one Ibanez
How is this album almost 15 already?? Prefer the original tuning but Dying In Your Arms, Departure and Suffocating Sight were interesting alternatives.
I remember I was 18 years old when this album released and had just started playing guitar. I thought back then this album had a great mix from bands like Metallica and melodic death metal riffs that you hear from bands like At The Gates and In Flames. Great stuff. Did you perhaps tune the guitar 1 step down on all strings for this to standard A ? It sounds like it anyways.
I think your playing is great. I also think some songs ... resonate better in certain tunings. I know a lot of tuning has to do with the range of the vox, but I think a half step or a full step is plenty. For example, playing any of the big four who usually play E standard, in D standard. I think Trivium's sweet spot is that drop C area. Either way, great playing, I think your guitar gave me a seizure.
My favorite Trivium album. This is the one my uncle put on my PSP when I was a little kid.. I had the great opportunity to listen to metalcore when it was at its peak popularity, and it inspired me to continue learning and eventually become better at guitar.
Sounds really good, but hard to deny the dynamics of those songs in the original tunings, especially single notation with bass hits in between. As always, you slayed it though.
Dude is the embodiment of mountain dew flavored vape juice
Wtf 😂
They did. It was called shogun
Ascedancy is album that introduced me to trivium
Funky Shogun was my first.
Pull Hard on Frets on Fire got me into it. Still listen to this album and played the riffs countless times on guitar haha.
Mine was vengeance falls
Strife was the song that introduced me to them but I didn’t really like it then I heard pull harder and was in love
Mine was Silence In The Snow
Nice one dude, Ascendancy is such a masterpiece of an album. 🤘🏾
For the type of riffs and compositions, i prefer the original tuning. With the lower tuning it makes it less tight and strident but more muddy imo
I was going to say something along these exact lines
I love how Drowned & Torn Asunder now sounds like an In Flames song
In Flames is huge influence for Trivium
@@mehmetkanar1893 iknow, that's why it's so much cool
why do you think they play in a# tuning lol
Trivium FOREVER
JAMIE SLAYS FOREVERRRRRR

In middle of the somberlain. Just before the 'in the mouth of hell we march' chant.

I hate to be that guy but...
Nah just kidding, this is awesome!
Really appreciate your effort, but in my opinion those songs were enough heavy. That tone you gave made sometimes repetitive.
Down tuned from the sky
A metronome to the head of trepidation...
Pull Harder On The Down Tuned Strings Of Your Martyr
Andrew Baena: Are you challenging me
Oh, you're approaching me?

This whole album slays, so perfect that you’d downtune it. Many parts now sound almost deathcore. Suffocating Sight is my fave. Killer job, brother!
Like Light To The Flies really stuck out to me for some reason. Sounds good downtuned.
Almost Swedish MDM
Jamie with the Black metal microphone
🤣
After all these years Dying in Your arms still is a great song :)
thats the 1 bad song on the album lol screamo sounding.

that light to flies riff will always be one of my favorites
You can hear the swedish death metal influence on their riffs.
soooo Shogun basically :P
P.S. Ascendancy was recorded in drop C# but the pitched it up
was it?! not drop d?

I love drop d :P
Love this album.. and sounds so “weird” downtuned... still im a dropped b guy 🤷🏻♂️

Dying In Your Arms is in mono :c it's really weird to listen to a song in mono nowadays
haha yeh i had to add something to it after so i must have exported it as mono
I wish I could hear The Wretchedness Inside riff downtuned.
Dude Wretchedness is in Drop G#
Max Geier and?
Your picking technique is so clean! I must be using the metronome wrong
thanks!!
1:23 BOAT RUDDER STRANGE MOUNTAIN
Great video as usual. I think that drop D fits better in this album because of the highly pitched screaming of Matt in that era.
This is still among my favorite albums ever! This was what i needed to get through monday!!!
Not sure how I feel about it. Had to take this video in waves.
My favorite fucking album from them!!
Hell yeah
The Suffocating sight intro riff can get heavier????
Didn't even learn Corey's part right for Rain, didn't learn the intro to Gunshot correctly either... Yeah I can't watch this any further. Fucking Yikes.
what if it’s my interpretation of it 😊
Jamie slays because he's the riff slayer peace out brother. And keep rocking out bro
They need to let you due a show with them lol, I'd travel far as fuck to see that.
Great vid. Gutted you didn't play Pull Harder from the beginning though.
I hope Heafy sees this and gets inspired
A gunshot to the head sounds like slipknot
love the vid as always, but i would've loved to see pull harder downpicked cause your picking is always phenomenal

Tbh I think the original versions are heavier
Love that guitar
Rain sounds like a TTEOTD song
I guess inwas wrong in thinking this was already on a 7 string🤷♂️
so it becomes a darkest hour album.
I liked this before the video started.
So awesome
Just wish we had full songs with the vocals
So its basically as if Amon Amarth had written Ascendancy?
haha yeh!
Rain was heavy as fuck!!!
Wow, all of the songs sounds absolutely awesome
This was glorious, such a great album and fun to listen to downtuned
This video proves that ascendancy was the best trivium album at riffs, but shogun its still better
awesome job,
Just started learning guitar and your videos are such an inspiration,
thank you.
Very cool. Love trivium.
hi, have you ever wanted to do tab tutorials for people who follow you?
yeh!
Your playing reminds me of Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse. Specially your left hand.
That swirl Ibanez looks so dope. Can you please give me one of your Ibanez? Please please, I want it so bad but can’t afford it, please give me one Ibanez
🤘🤘🤘 this is perfection!
What's their tuning?
3:39 - I really like that riff from Like light to the flies already but when downtimes DAMN! Sounds even better

Cool and nice videos about tuning down the songs, I would like to listen As I Lay Dying Shadows are Security tuned down 🤘🏻🎧🎶
What plugin do you use to get that tone? Sounds great dude🤘
archetype nolly neural DSP 😊
I've probably heard these songs over a hundred times each \m/ Very refreshing to hear it downtuned :)
Killer man, sounds cool dropped! What camera are you using by the way? The video quality is awesome \m/

Ascendancy wasn't my first trivium album, but I think it's my favorite. I was pumped when I saw this.
Very cool! Sounds badass down tuned 🤘🤘
Nice hat by the way 👍
The gunshot riff sounds menacing AF. Sounds like Revocation
U should do top Upon a burning body songs
Rain sounds so cool
OOF that is tasty
The guitar thoouuuuughhhhh!!
Can I have it with your autograph on it?!
Goddamn this album is so good. Genre defining for sure.
Sounds really good, but hard to deny the dynamics of those songs in the original tunings, especially single notation with bass hits in between. As always, you slayed it though.
Ascendancy is all drop D 6 string. Sounds plenty heavy enough.
THE BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME^ after shogun of course
The swirl with those pickups at the same time looks fucking sick. Any plans to to do the headstock matching as well?
a very fun and interesting video
but why the odd key change in dying in your arms?
Favorite Trivium album and somehow you made it even harder, great job man
A well crafted riff is heavy in it’s own right.
By the way awesome playing.
This is awesome. I actually think rain sounds better in this tuning.
hers one what if all types of metal just played acoustic guitars
What I would love to see and hear.
Shogun in Drop B
& Parkway Drive maybe KWAS & Horizons in E standard.
Keep up the awesome work Jamie 🤘
shogun is already in b standard
Bruh....to say i dont care about the content is a lie, but at the same time its kinda the truth..i just wanna know when you got this guitar lol
Guitar tones are killer man. What are you using?
I'm here cause i imagined Rain tuned lower.
It's simple, I see Ascendancy, I click like
Love it man! ❤️ Keep up the awesome work on your videos!
The Dying in your arms chorus goes straight into the Shogun era
Jesus I think I shit myself when gunshot started
Is that an Ibanez Jem?
no. it’s a rg1527 😊
This is cool.
But obviously it’s better how it is.
A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation top!
That was one of your best videos ever! I Love it!
So cool my friend, excellent
