I was 17 when you broke the record the first time , I am 50 now , so it’s already a lifetime. I will always remember that moment , an amazing moment. Sotomayor a legend.
Unfortunately due to Cuba's boicots of the Olympic games in his prime years, he did not win more golds. What a jumper!!👏👏👏 What a pleasure to watch him jump😀
This record will never be broken. It's now 2024, and it's been 8 years since anyone jumped as high as 2.39 meters, 10 years since anyone jumped 2.43 meters.
As a junior high jumper and basketball player in my past, I think the reason the record stays this long is the young athletes with explosive leg power end up in basketball or volleyball, not high jumo. the minimal vertical leap necessary to clear 2,35' for instance, is around 30-33 inch. just to compare, elite basketball and volleyball players have a vertical leap of around 40 inch. and with most of them taller than 1.80, and perfectly coordinated, there's no reason to think they couldn't have been great high jumpers, and probably one of them could have broken the record. but the thing is they couldn't have trained in both sports growing up, because unlike sprinting, where you do see football players who ran in their high school years, high jump is much more technical, so they can't dedicate themselves to both sports.
Whose already in the Olympics this year for sure? Qualification was 2.33 1) Barshim 2) Tamberi 3) Jay Harrison (LSU) cleared 2.33. 4) dani lysenko maybe ( im looking forward to the russian team ) 5) I'm sure there's somebody from China Do you know anybody else ? Comment them
@@saikishore9742 Harrison from LSU - his best is 2.30 if not mistaken and just at ncaa indoor championships last month. He is an amazing young athlete who is almost equally good in the long jump, he won both at the meet. If he focused on high jump out of college he could possibly get there eventually with the right professional training (once out of amateur status) if he stays healthy. While his 2.30 indoor was the 7th best in the world @ indoor 2019/20 season, that is 6 inches from tying the world record. For those that have never jumped that is a big difference at that height.

The jumps on the video aren't his world record jump, which he achieved in Salamanca in 1993 by the slimmest of margins. You can easily find the footage on RUclips
The difference between 2.46 and 2.47 is approxiamately 3/8s of an inch. The metric system, at least the way it is used in the high jump, pole vault, long jump, etc. is not precise enough. 3/8s of an inch in the high jump is significant.
Как при прыжках в длину большую проблему составляет не только сила отталкивания, но и искусство попадания на планку, так и при прыжках в высоту - добиться точного попадания амплитуды прямо над планкой.
Especially long jump. Set in something like 1991. With all the advances in athleticism, that should’ve been broken a long time ago. Nobody has come close. Speaks volumes about athletes of that generation.
Ah... a couple of years ago, I expected Bogdan Bondarenko or Mutaz Barshim could do it, after getting close to the WR, but didn't happen. Now, I won't expect anymore.
Probably true. Only bad about jumps that high that really test human limits is it has to be almost exactly perfect. I would love to see another WR set in my lifetime.

not possible. high jumpers are delicate they land on bed cushion on the other side hence the ankles are not hardened. used for take off only. basketball dunk means you have to jump and land on the hard floor on your feet! so they cant do it again n again. that first guy already has had ankle surgery. did you see how fragile they are? so totally different sports. they are able to reach that high due to cushion on the other side. basketball is a vertical and different with repeated action. need more strength and power but height gets compromised!
I have 2:46mts marked on my kitchen wall...just to stare at and meditate. Under it is the Barshim's PB and the current Olympic Gold as well as the Woman's record 2:09mts...In high school I managed 5'10" once!
