For a guy who’s had his oculus for almost 2 years now and had stick drift on the second week of having my quest this is reality changing for me thank you so much for everything you do and everyone you’ve helped in the past and forever in the future
Like your telling me just playing for a few days = STICK DRIF while I could play on a ps4 for billions of years and no stickdrift. Meta is confusing me with more confusing at this rate
week 1 of having my quest 2. suddenly stick started drifting mid game, to much frustration. i tried calibratig first, but the drift is not constant and throws back quite a bit. Amazed of how quick this became an issue. i get it fixed with just wiggling it a bunch till it stops drifting, but i bet it will be just a few days before i'll need to open it up. Would love an update on how well the cleaning holds, if you're still using the oculus.
Awesome fix! PLEASE READ so some problems I ran into after performing is that after about 15 minutes of letting them both sit they "shorted" for a second, one controller buzzed continually then stopped working and the other outright stopped. though it is no longer a problem. I do recommend for people who do this to let your controllers sit out for 45 minutes to an hour before you reintroduce the battery just to stay safe. if the controllers stop working give them some time and they will most likely fix themselves as the rest of the contact solution or isopropyl alcohol will dry out.
the 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol is better and has less water in it an dries much faster. i would not recommend lower proof alcohol on electronic circuits or contacts. I have been using non conducting zero residue contact cleaner for my quest 2 controllers joy sticks. I spray it in the gap where the joystick and plast plate meet. I even do it with the battery still in place. And it has been working for me.
I have no idea why people wouldn’t take apart the controller and let it sit to dry. It’s not hard to take it apart and what really is the problem is the contacts inside of the joystick mechanism you need to make the contacts be able to reach down and touch the sensors. After a bunch of playing those get used so much they start to flex up but you need them to touch the sensors
This is a quick easy fix. Good video. You get to clean it and it should last you until dirt gets in there and gunk things up. If it's drifting after just a few days after cleaning, and you're doing it more often, then it's probably time to replace the joystick. The cheaper way is to order joystick replacements in Amazon, but you're going to have to take the controller apart. Plenty of good videos of that in YT. Replacing the whole thing with a new/refurbished controller is around $60-90.
I always used air for cleaning and that worked a few times. This time it didnt work en drifting was really getting worse. Your solution worked for me !
Wanna make sure you’re using canned air and not from an air compressor. Compressed air usually has moisture in it. Not saying you did that, just so others know.
Something to note when taking off the face plate of the controller is to be VERY gentle and try not to bend too hard or else you might possibly bend one of the detents (like i did) thankfully I was able to bend them back into shape with some pliers. If you do bend one of them and bend them back into shape do it VERY GENTLY otherwise you might break the detent off. And no I didn't do this, it's just a suspicioun.
If your thumbstick makes a clicky, "springy" noise after reassembly: the spring around the thumbstick is loose but can be retightened by twisting it clockwise. I twisted mine just a little and the clicky, springy noise went away. Be careful not to bend it though.
I've had the quest 2 since launch and the problem I'm having is a bit more frustrating than I thought it'd be. When I opened it and cleaned around the joystick, put it back on and everything it still would drift, I would see the transparent thumb still pushing downwards and I don't know what to do. Any info on how to fix this would be a life saver, thanks.
I had drift for many months and wanted to play the games where you move with the stick and now it's fixed and I'm so happy thank you for the video And I just blowed and used q tips
Tried this and it actually worked! Although the face buttons have fully stopped working. And yes I have let it dry and I sprayed less than what the guy in the video sprayed. Time for some new controllers
The drift comes back after a few days to a month. So what you need to do is take the controller apart fully and actually get ahold of the potentiometer and take it apart and spray it down with contact cleaner so youl be cleaning the potentiometer down to the nitty gritty. Its what i did and my drift completely went away
thank you so much man, Its been increasingly getting worse, but this shit eradicated my stick drift, literally no evidence of it ever being there. Shits cazy💀

Thank you! Your video was by far the best on RUclips to solve my issue. Sadly I didn’t have any contact cleaner so I had to cut a straw and use to blow into. Just had to make sure I didn’t blow saliva. Haha. But I solved it. Thanks !
that is a good idea to use a stray.. another option to direct blowing with mout is to attach the straw to an empty dry plastic bottle top and and squeeze air from the bottle through the straw?
The thin blade of a Swiss Army knife works well for this. I also recommend that you give it an hour or two to ensure that the contact cleaner is totally evaporated.
The swiss knife usually features a bottle and can opener as well. One of those has a thin edge that I have used to open up the controller, it's safer than with the blade since you won't cut yourself if you slip off.

But now when I took it off (I took it off very carefully) now a chip came off of the face plate -_- I’d say just spray the contact cleaner down the hole that’s what I was doing before I stupidly came back to this video. I should have known better but this is not a good solution. Spraying ANY kind of liquid down into a small hole that contains electrical circuitry is a bad idea. He says take the battery out but that's largely irrelevant if you're getting liquid into an area that's extremely difficult to dry. "Quick dry" means nothing if you get liquid into small enclosed areas with no air exposure. In my case I even shot compressed air into the hole and gave it a bit to dry out but it still must not have been enough because when I installed the battery again, the controller continued to use the vibrate feature as if it was malfunctioning. Now it doesn't work at all. What probably happened is not all of the alcohol dried from where it got trapped before it was introduced to power again and it damaged the circuitry when I tried to use the controller again. Either that or the alcohol was corrosive enough to destroy something on the circuit board. Either way, anybody that got this to work was probably lucky that liquid didn't get somewhere it shouldn't have. In my case all it took was three drops to ruin the controller I fear. I currently have the controller with the face plate off sitting in front of a fan and will leave it there overnight to see if that helps but I have my doubts at this point.
Sorry you had bad results, did you get it working after letting it dry out? IPA certainly has a longer duration to evaporate and it depends on the percentage of IPA you used. In every case (very few) were someone experienced what you had, their controllers continued to work once it dried out. Hope yours continues to work!
@@rippavr8279 It started working again after a couple days thankfully but I'd still say proceed with caution when trying this. In my case it also didn't do much to fix the problem. It made a small difference for a few hours then went back to the same amount of drifting. Ultimately I had to by a replacement joystick which was cheap, it just took a bit to install into the controller because I had to disassemble far more than was necessary for the cleaning. However looking deep into the controller it surprises me that alcohol or another suitable cleaner would do anything to help by just spraying it down in there from the top because the liquid really has to fall into the right spot but then wiggling the joystick from there would essentially just push the dirt around after it was loosened up by the cleaner. Hopefully with the cleaner or alcohol it would move the dirt off of the sensor long enough for it to help but given that the loosened dirt is never wiped out from inside the controller using this method, it could always find its way back. I'd say this is probably a last resort solution if you have absolutely no tech skills or money to buy a 25 dollar replacement joystick. For me it was easy and straight forward, just a bit time consuming.
which percentage Isopropyl alcohol? I would recommend using at least 91% and even better to use 99% proof.. because the higher the percentage.. the less percentage of water it has in it.. Another option is to use the non conducting zero residue contact cleaner.. this stuff than also help remove any liquid inside a component. I use non conducting non flamable zero residue on contacts with live electricity for switches all the time. it has been very helpfull to me to clean contacts and by using the non conducting form.. there is less risk or any shorting happenning. also being that it is non flamable is also important when dealing with contacts that still have electricity or risk of sparking around them
