This TV appearance was the first time I heard of them in 1988, but I didn't catch the name of the band or the song title. The line about the big, red rubber ball stayed with me as an earworm for half a year, then I told a muso acquaintance about it and he said it might be this band. Then one Friday night a bunch of us went to see them play at the Venue in Auckland. They opened the set with this song; as soon as I heard the first chords blasting out over our heads, I knew it was the band from the TV! I went to so many of their gigs over the next few years, always amazing. In more recent years I saw them at The Others Way Fest on K' Rd in 2019 and Flying Nun 40th in 2021. ❤❤❤
Perfection of the NZ song. Saw them play this in the Subway, so long ago, just as the ep came out. Was blown away then, still in awe now. The brutal drums, Shane's fragile voice, the harmony in the chorus and dismissiveness of the vocals after. A band that was not given any world wide respect.
Certain movers & shakers in the international music biz did rate them very highly and tried to get behind them (eg. Rough Trade's Geoff Travis and that bloke at Arista) but the band fell apart before the world learned of their greatness. And grunge happened....
...a band that deserves more attention than they ever got...
