I believe some of the traffic problems are contributed to poor road design (to skinny & poor lane markings)/pedestrian design(lacks sidewalks & bike lanes) and traffic light’s designed to stop most traffic versus a good flow.
Thank you so much for adding that part about these newer subdivisions that have been built over the past 2 years and the roads leading into them have not been upgraded. No street lights. 4 way stop at every intersection single car lane. That traffic is the worst. Don’t move to Katy. Sugar land is a better option the roads are already developed and good to go. Faster commute home.
Also Sugar Land has a better drive to colleges. Katy doesn’t have their own college system. Students either do Cypress or Houston or Wharton County in Richmond.
Katy was great 10 years ago when I moved here from Austin . But the crime is on a rise and it’s not longer the quite town it once was . For reference I’m only 37 but Katy and the Houston area is terrible
I love living here, but the increase in traffic has been dramatic over the past 10 years. I'm so old, I remember when we got the McDonalds. I've enjoyed increased amenities, but good lord, the traffic.
How is the crime rate / security situation between Katy and Sugar land ? Are gated communities common and the way go with in Katy ? Moving to Houston from Australia in July.
You can live very reasonably in Katy. You can get a nice house in a good area well below $400,000. You can buy a house for that much but you do not have to do so. The town of Katy is not that big (Old Katy) but the rest of the Katy area is huge (new Katy). It matters where you want to live in Katy regarding housing and other prices. Some areas are over priced.
For a mix race family asian and black who love asian food with kids age 3, 13 and 16 what neighborhoods would you recommend? I work in prison and my wife works in government administration
For the north and west suburbs Katy is closest to the best Asian food and shopping. If you are trying to stay away from Katy then Cypress and Fulshear are the next closest and both of these areas also have really nice communities and schools for your kids!
We are moving from NYC we are looking to rent for the first year until we settle down jobs. My wife is in the medical field and I’m in the automotive industry. We are thinking Katy and sugar land. We have a 10 and a 4yr old so schools are a big priority what do you recommend for rentals. We are coming in February to look
Both are great choices for top rated schools. Sugar Land will be an easier commute if you are working in the medical district. Katy also has their own hospitals so if you work there than Katy would be a better option. Automotive will be good in either. Overall Katy will have more options for rentals in top rated schools.
We're a young family from Los Angeles and seriously considering moving to the Houston suburbs. Tired of Californian politics, costs, etc. Considering Sugar Land because we work in health care and have job connections in the Texas Medical Center and because we're part Asian American. Have you done any videos about Asian Americans in Houston, how are Asian Americans perceived, etc.? Thanks!
I haven't done any videos but my husband is Asian American. He feels that Houston is extremely diverse and thus more accepting of minorities than other areas. Sugar Land, in particular, has a huge concentration of east and south Asians. This is partially because of the easy access to the medical district, so you're not alone in feeling this is a good idea!
I grew up in Katy in the 80's and currently live in North San Diego county. My family is still in Katy, and I've watched it grow from a little town west of Houston to a bustling suburb. Katy and Sugarland are similar to Orange County or North San Diego in the respect that they are mostly filled with neighborhoods and shopping centers. As she said there is a lot of traffic, and there are some taxes you may not experience in other places. The MUD tax is kind of like Mello Roos in SoCal, although I'm not sure how they weigh against each other as far as percentage. However, both suburbs are much more affordable than Los Angeles (or any other part of SoCal), and there is no shortage of housing. She also mentioned the distance from the airport and Downtown. This is also similar to SoCal. Just remember, they are extensions of a major metropolitan area, and have a billion things to do. You just may have to drive an hour or so to get there. As far as the view of Asian Americans, Katy and Sugarland are extremely diverse, and almost everyone moved there from somewhere else. I think you'll find it as welcoming or more so than Los Angeles. Sugar Land is essentially the same suburban structure as Katy, but there are a few little nooks and crannies of character that you may not find in Katy. Good luck with your search. I think you'll find that Sugarland is a wonderful place to live.
Im a dad of a young family as well, and I'm packing up and leaving Seattle for the same reasons you are considering leaving California, we took a trip down to Houston and fell in love with the City, we sold our home... and are moving in a month.
Houston supposedly has one of the 2nd largest Asian populations and centers in the U.S. now. Many streets in the Bellaire area are not in english first and most businesses in that area I cannot even read as they are not in English. Katy has an "Asian center" that opened near a new University being built. But Katy is the worst for a commute into town. While there is bus service directly to the medical center via a park and ride service, I-10 is the worse coming into or leaving Katy (from East or West). The Grand Parkway is also a clogged artery, especially south of I-10. Be careful where you move to in Katy - if you are near one of the reservoirs or south of a major bayou/creek? You will likely flood (at least your yard). The roads here flood very easily as they are made to basically become a stream in heavy rain. People complain about "Houston" allowing homes and businesses to be built in reservoirs which increases flooding, but it's actually the counties that make these decisions. So see, politics are the same everywhere and moving to another state to escape is useless. The entire freeze shambles is somewhat a political debacle with our electrical grid. And just as CA has to deal with fires, we have to deal with hurricanes so brush up on that if you decide to move to SE TX.
First of all, if you live in Katy congratulations! You've made it. You are rich! Lol. Just joking. A very nice place to live. We live in a beautiful 10 million dollar home in Katy, Texas. It's very nice in Katy. 💸🤑💰💲

As I live in Katy I completely disagree
Stop it
If it’s not katy proper it’s not really katy it’s Houston

Agree - the traffic!

Where did you hear that about $1 billion?

All you need to know is that HaiDiLao and Tim Ho Wan chose to open in Katy Asia Town. Not in Sugar Land.

What do you think about living in Richmond Tx
