  • My 1998 Ford Econoline 15 passenger van rear A/C isn't working. Instead of blowing cold A/C air out of the ceiling vents, it blows hot air out the floor vents. The front A/C works fine.
So in this video, I demonstrate how to remove the interior trim panels and access the faulty part. I also show how to fix it with a $18 vent door assembly part from Ford and include the part number in the video.
At the end of the video, I show the vent door position based on the dash control settings for the air.

I elected to repair my rear blend door with a piece of stainless, some epoxy and several screws and nuts. I figure the replacement one is going to break, so I re-engineered it to last 50-years. General George S. Patton did not like paying for the same real estate twice and I don't like fixing the same thing twice

Thanks for posting. Nothing out there that shows a hands on fix. Great job.

Here’s what I did to connect the door and actuator - in case anyone needs help in the future. With a little wiggling and wrestling you can get the ac hoses towards the front of the van from the fan out and around the side plastic. This allows you to sort of twist the entire unit out - front end farthest. Then you have enough space to install the blend door and actuator together. To clarify, that whole rear unit is about 3 feet long. The part nearest the front of the van is the rear AC evaporator coil and lines. If you wriggle that part out you can sort of lift and tilt the entire unit out and have enough space to reinstall the door, actuator, and screw fairly easily.

Bravo, thank you for a straight to the problem and solution. I searched for an answer 17 different ways. Living in Florida I am not concerned with heat, so I simply drilled a hole so I could push a pin thru and behind the door, locking it into AC only position. Thank you again/

My 2007, has the same problem. Thanks to you I know how to fix it. Thank You 🙏. Also if your AC stops blowing out of the vents in front and only comes out of your defrost which happen to me that’ll be a quick and easy fix for $30 part for your vacuum line and that’ll solve it. Apparently these two problems are common in the vans. Your right about Texas summer’s I live in Huntsville National forest my pool reads 96° in the summer my big pool

Great video. I got a similar problem but i have ac blowing out the top vents when set to heat. So I’m thinking the flap is just stuck broken the same way but stuck in heat setting? Is that possible

    • @davidmiles
      @davidmiles  6 месяцев назад +1

Most likely. That flap is what controls the rear air and which vents it comes out of, so that's probably your problem.

@@davidmileswell, after buying the flap door and ripping it out of my unit, it wasn't even broken! (yay :P) BUT I was able to get it working by putting the control to FLOOR. I didn't realize since it's coming out of the floor vents that it would activate when set to FLOOR lol (I don't have the factory vents hooked up, just shoots the heat up out of it's body) but thanks a ton for the video! wouldn't have figured it out without this video and some random comment I came across that said to switch it to FLOOR lol

Had to do the front flap a few years ago and that was a pain , now back is out . These doors are crap . When I did the front it was supposed to be improved with a reinforced piece where the old one broke . Looks like the factory ford piece here is the same piece of junk ?

Thanks for the video, I already did what you did in the video, I replaced the door, including the blower, the resistance and I still don't have AC blowing on the vents. Do you have any idea what it could be?

    • @IzzyamaR6

I had the same issue. No A/C during acceleration, and hot air blowing from the rear. It is a vacuum issue. You have to replace the vacuum reservoir, by redirecting the vacuum lines and install a new vacuum reservoir underneath the dash. Easy 30 minute fix and $40 in parts. I did mine 9ver the weekend, and now evering thing works. There is a good video by New Jersey Outdoor Adventures. It's called "Ford Econoline AC HEAT DEFROST ACCELERATION FIX.

  • @roymariano7116

This is a common problem with the Ford Econoline vans with Rear HVAC. Poor design of the "Blender Valve", a.k.a. Flapper valve. Made of Plastic. DESIGNED TO FAIL. Had this happen on my 2011 E-350 during a Summer road trip to Las Vegas, travelling along Interstate 15, made for a miserable journey for everyone inside the van, the rear blower blowing out hot air.
And then, a few years later, the front AC began blowing out hot air, from a failed Vacuum Reservoir unit. And again: DESIGNED TO FAIL.

What if when i turn the Heat on. There is no heat in the Rear. And only cold air comes out the Top vents. Would that be Caused by a faulty Flap Door.???????

    • @mattpistritto1424

been 2 years, but had the same problem just now for any one reading it. you need to set the controls to FLOOR and the flap door will activate and it'll start blowing heat!

For A/C, I want to get the air away from the vehicle air and install a universal electric compressor with a fan, evaporator and reservoir mounted under the van. I already have a 400 watts of solar and batteries. Maybe 🤔 lo do a video about that. Thanks for the idea.

Why not just install a RV unit? A lot less work and trouble.
You could always do what I done for AC when summer camping. I got a 89 dollar AC, hitch hauler and 2 dryer vent trunks. Mounted unit to hauler and boxed off the cold air outflow. After parking, I run the trunks up to the side sliding windows and used safety pins to hold them to screens. Worked just like a central unit in your home.

I was going to do that, but I elected to simply add a 12-Volt air conditioner. If you separate the front and rear factory air, you would need a second condenser and a fan for it. That's why I bought add-on A/C for a semi, disassembled it and mounted the condenser with fan and the compressor under the vehicle. On a super hot day I can run all three to get a head start, then turn off the engine and camp out with the 12-Volter.

I had same issue when we inherited our van. The hoses that run hot water to the rear heater core had value’s that were shut off. Simply opened them up so hot water/coolant could circulate. Now my van is a custom conversion. Not sure if all Ecnoline vans have the shutoff’s or not. It’s just a quick easy check before pulling the back panels out. Another thing I found out was, there’s 3 different HVAC systems in the pre 2007 models. It depends on customer order, availability and who done the conversion. There’s a heat/air combo, heat only or air only. Also some models have to be on the vent position before they will work in the rear. Just some things I have been taught, hopefully they can help you.
