  • Plumbers Putty causes more issues than solutions when used on bathtub drains as most plumbers apply too much causing it to fail. Watch the video to see the only thing I use to prevent leaks from returning!

Dude I been plumbing roughly 18 years. Most of my clients are repeat and I’m talking about A LOT of clients that I’ve replaced the entire drains and that means all the strainers are replaced. I’ve used putty on probably 10,000 tub, shower, garbage disposal, and lavi sink strainers. I have yet to get a call back for the strainer leaking. Every time I see a strainer leaking it was installer error. Am I just lucky? Hard to believe in luck 10,000 times.

Putty is tried and true. That's what I mainly use.
But I've worked for companies that only use silicone.
Yes you can remove drains that have been installed with silicone.

50yrs service plumber when the fiberglass and steel started coming out I use 💯 silicone on tub drains and I silicone the overflow gaskets. On SS sinks I silicone basket strainers andGD flanges seen all those plumber putty end up leaking keep me busy😊

I usually always use plumbers putty for drains unless directions specify something different (black plastic, use silicone). Never had a problem. I've had instances where I needed to remove a drain but couldn't bc someone used silicone.

Provide good service and fair prices and the “next guy” should be you again. Removing a siliconed fitting is slight work, people talk like it’s been welded lol.

This is the silliest thing I've ever heard. So, without putting eyes on the underside of that tub your certain that the puddy is cause of the leak just by unscrewing the drain? Not improper installation? Rotted tub shoe gasket? The all too common loose or rotted overflow gasket? I've been a plumber for 27 years, and I've never seen a drain leak where putty was applied properly as the sealant and it was suspect. I often get called out to replace drain trims because as the metal will corrode away before the puddy ever gives out.

I was trying to change the tub drain in the house I just bought and couldn’t for the life of me get the drain to budge. I YT videos for ideas and came across yours and realized that the previous owner must have used plumbers putty to install the drain. Then I found another video of a guy who was basically beating the crap out of the drain and then used some type of drill bit to remove it. I didn’t have the bit he had but I had a hammer and a strong prayer and that ended up doing the job. When I was finally able to remove the drain, it was plumbers putty city all down there! I shall be using silicone.

Should have tried a proper tub wrench and locked onto it with a decent pair of channel locks. More than likely the center cross hairs of the drain were broken off on the video you watched, which happens over time. In that case there’s nothing to grab onto. When he used the drill, he probably decided the run out and buy the tub drain easy out tool that most plumbers carry. Otherwise you need to cut a section or the drain very carefully without cutting the tub or drain shoe and pop out a small section of the drain from top to bottom so it will have flex to slightly bend in and pull out.

So if you improperly install the drain into the shoe it'll leak with putty so use the putty install it properly and you won't have a problem. And if the bathtub wasn't set right in a mortar base you'll have the same problem. Venues and putty for longer than that dude's been alive no problems
