I was taught by a plumber to put a little soap on the plmbers putty and alittle on the drain hole helps putty from ripping as you tighten seems to work but idk if its right haha

Why no rubber seal instead of the claylike stuff?

The clay stuff is plumbers putty .. the rubber gasket is on the bottom side of the tub. U do the same for kitchen strainer baskets
