    How right you are, Laura. Some of those Advent calendars are hundreds of pounds. Nothing heralds the birth of Christ like 25 bottles of designer ales!! In the rest of the world holiday means not going to work or school, not 2 months of utterly pointless spending. 😂😂

    My sister got me the book 30 Days to Stop Being a Shopaholic by Harper Daniels and it helped a lot this year, I'm more mindful about myself and what I'm buying. I just don't want as much stuff now.

    For the large decorations, those people tend to have storage units for them which seems insane to me, but it is a thing.

    We have an artificial tree because I'm allergic. We've had our current tree for 15 years now and it's still going strong. I used to have tons of decorations collected over the years. I've given away almost all the cheapie ones and the only decorations we now have are the ones that were hand made by me or family or friends or were gifts. Our gifts are usually just wrapped in tissue paper because I have a ton of it. I would buy some every year to use in the gift bags because I could never find the stuff I'd bought before. Now that all that is organized, I have a box full of it handy and ready to go.

    Real trees have become so crazy expensive too.

  • @rvanderjagt5944
    @rvanderjagt5944 9 месяцев назад +3

    Others have told me and I also learned: reconsider spending a load of money on a pre-lit tree or wreath, because if the lights go kaput, you're still stuck putting lighs on a very expensive tree/wreath. I'm happier having spent $5 on a plain wreath from Michaels that I decorated myself, than (IIRC) $20 on the pre-lit one that lasted maybe 2 years.
    Though I did have a boss who got her pre-lit tree at an auction for like $10.
    I figured out in college that getting quality, sturdy decorations on post season clearance is the way to go. Some of my Halloween deocrations I''ve had for almost 20 years years.
    Also Jovi is darling.

    Happy Thanksgiving! Totally agree with your suggestions. This year, I’m sewing fabric gift bags that we can easily store and use every Christmas.
    I thought it was funny that RUclips chose to place a Hobby Lobby advertisement in your video (showing just the type of items you were describing).

    Beauty advent calendars was a really good addition to the list. They're so tempting to get but you're literally lucky (because the whole thing's a gamble) if there's anything in them that you actually wanted or needed. I'm like you and don't wear makeup but I considered getting one for my daughter until I watched a RUclips video of someone going through what was in one.

    I used to talk to my Christmas tree. Like "ooh, you are so beautiful" and stuff like that. I know it's a bit nuts. But I miss it. Because taking to my plastic tree feels too nuts, even for me. 😅 What im trying to say: some of the spirit is gone ever since I switched to a plastic tree. It's more than just the smell. 🎄

    I'm so with you on all this! I get my Christmas smell with a scented candle, and am about to iron some plain paper that came as packing in something I had delivered - original tight wad here! Generally speaking, I am happy for other people to fill their houses with Christmas tat, but choose not to have it in my home, just a nice nativity set and some candles does me well.

    I'm with you Laura I watch RUclipsrs who buy advent calendars and mystery boxes, so I don't have to don't need a bunch of stuff. I'm a moisturizer and go person if I feel like it or it's a special occasion, I put on makeup that and I have sensitive skin. I reuse gift bags some years we don't buy giftwrap I bought a few after Christmas last year. I am a baker and never buy the kits or the cookie dough I buy frosting add coloring and use sprinkles to decorate cookies. If I had a kid, I might do a gingerbread house but more fun just to do cookies.

    For the wrapping, for a while now, I just use the packaging material I get to cushion online orders. You know, the long, brown, butcher paper. Sometimes I'll cut up paper bags and turn the labeled side inward. And then I'll use various, non traditional ribbony kind of things like I'll crotchet some colorful yarn, leather thongs, lace, or even rattan, ect... makes it different and is still pretty

    Definitely...., I'd rather quality items that if at some point I'd like to change out., they will definitely be enjoyed by someone else because they've help up. Maybe depending on the budget or preference... take tea towels for example.... If you're the kind of person that wants to see something new or different in your holiday decoration or you can use those tea towels for wash Rags afterwards. Maybe a few things are okay depending on what it is or something that you can somehow repurpose if you know that you will do that.

    Make your own advent calendar for your person-who-loves-beauty-products! Put in some 'less exciting' useful things like toothpaste they use to shake things up a little and make sure you pick things you think they'll use :) more personal and probably the same price in the end.

    I’ve had an artificial Christmas tree for years. I will get the pine/evergreen scents that people buy for their cars (usually green and in the shape of a tree). I’ll hang one or two in my tree, towards the inside & back of the tree. I will add in an additional one a couple weeks later to keep the smell fresh. I have fooled so many people who think it is a real tree. I also go wild with the lights…one year I had over 900 lights on my six foot tree…it really was beautiful. And yes, I am one of “those people” who put the tree lights back in the holder, box or kit so I can reuse them year after year. I’ve toned it down a bit over the years, since my kids left home. I now only have 3 bins of Christmas decorations, 2 bags for wreaths (they each hold 2 wreaths) and the box with the artificial tree.

    With my allergies, most artificial trees are a no along with farmed trees. However, for $15, going to the National Forest and cutting down my own tree works out just fine. (I call it my vegan hunting permit).

    I enjoy your videos. However I disagree about the Christmas tree. Real trees are better for the environment, smells great and created memories . I try to be mindful of purchases and reuse decorations every year.

    • @HowToGYST
      @HowToGYST  9 месяцев назад +1

      I’m not so sure they’re all that better for the environment, to be honest, particularly when you consider contextual information like driving to and from the farm each year. Yes, an artificial tree is more damaging to produce, but it then lasts for many years. (I’m hopeful we’ll have ours for the rest of our lives.) So I suspect the environmental impact of both is often the same.
      I did mention the smell in the video, plus one or two ways to recreate it, and also touched on the fact that you can still create wonderful memories around the Christmas season, they just don’t have to involve a tree. You can still experience everything else the season has to offer. 🙂

      @@HowToGYST Real trees are still better for the environment. Artificial trees end up in landfills, are often produced overseas and need to be shipped to the US.
