Being formally diagnosed with a medical condition helped me be more accepting of my limitations... maybe that's part of it for you too. It was a real lightbulb moment when you said that some goals are meant to be abandoned or partway done just like some books that don't suit you or you got enough out of them.
My pile of backup gifts is so old the things are out of style! I'm going to stop buying them altogether. At least embarrassment won't clutter up my house! 😆
I'm skipping doing Christmas cards this year as we're expecting a baby at Christmas time. Less stress, and we can still say Merry Christmas in person or in a message. ❤️❤️
I just look at “goals” like that all the time by now. Every undertaking really is just a trial and error process. Like an experiment. I basically don’t call things “goals” anymore. I take the approach that maybe I’d like to “try” this or that and then I just see how it goes. And really, more times than not, the whole thing really was just for me to learn from it that I need to move on from that thing or change my course entirely. These things are just as much about learning what is worth pursuing and what isn’t. It’s just like the guilt clutter we have. Somehow we want to not “lose” what we already “invested” in it. But just as with the stuff we keep around for that reason, it’s also a fallacy when it comes to goals. That’s bcuz keeping it or keeping at it is only adding to the current wasted space or wasted time. Best to just stop or get rid of it now and cut any “losses” now rather than later. I could say the same for toxic relations also. Putting more into it is just wasting even more. Trying to keep polishing turds just never really works. Lol.
Laura I’m so happy to hear your father is doing well. Wishing him the best of health for 2024. Health issues and concerns as well as loss of a loved one puts everything into perspective. I’ve had an autoimmune disease since I was 17 as well as having an ill father while I was growing up. After losing my dad and going through surgeries and still living with chronic pain, etc. I look at life differently. I just don’t want much of anything anymore. It is much more important for me to have a decluttered home and a simpler life. I’m still working on it as I know I will feel a lot less anxious and will be able to maintain my home easily. Spending time with my family and friends and hopefully travelling is what I look most forward to in 2024.
I have retained old Christmas cards, and am glad I did. Having the final card from a deceased Love One displayed on my mantel each Holiday Season keeps their memory with us. Perhaps because I'm now in my 60's, I find that these simple items (cards, notes, letters) have turned into Family Treasures. Once you toss them, they're gone forever. They can always be recycled once I'm gone, or perhaps my Kids will take the time to share them with my future Grandkids, along with a little bit about who the Sender was. They're a Legacy.
I have been giving a lot of my extra Christmas decorations to my kids…they are grown…it’s so fun to see how much they are enjoying them.I don’t like putting up as much as I use to when I was younger
I tested positive for c-vid on Monday and that will now dictate what my holidays are going to look like. No handmade gifts, no cards, no visits. The only thing I'm upset about is the handmade gifts. Every year I make an ornament for family and very close friends. They are usually small so I wait until December when I can finally get into a holiday mood to make them. They will be delayed a bit and maybe added to something else that is useful during the rest of the year. This is not what I had planned for the end of my year, but it's what I've got. Hope to make the best of it.
I understand how you feel. I had a terrible viral infection that gave me flu-like symptoms and laryngitis for 3 weeks. I lost 12 pounds in two weeks! I felt better for two days then my husband and I tested positive for Covid four days ago. No decorations or cards for us this year. We missed Thanksgiving with family so we're hoping to enjoy Christmas at least. Prioritizing our health right now.
My batteries were out of date and I didn't realize it. I was thinking my wireless keyboard and mouse needed replaced but nope my batteries were out of date by almost 6 months but still somewhat working. My other half could make out the date on the batteries. Buying bulk wasn't wise for us as we didn't use them fast enough.
Hi Laura. I have been watching your videos for years and never realized you were from Kildare. I spent a year there years and years ago as a French assistant at the convent. I loved it, the sisters were so nice and fun. Been in love with Ireland for more than 40 years🤣. All the best, Laura, take care. Chantal from France
I almost died this year…only 55 ..had a physical in May…clean bill of health. August 10 th went into septic shock ..causes organ failure ..your body is dying….they don’t know why. I’m just not starting to feel better. It took my family completely off guard….and it definitely has given us all a different perspective on life. ❤ Each day is a gift and we just never know. It’s hard to not take each day for granted….but trying to be extra thankful for each and every day
I have always called them bowling pins. Skittles is a much nicer name. Maybe that’s where the name Skittles came from for those brightly colored candies. I love your beautiful Irish step dancing doll on the mantle. 💚You are so right about the Christmas cards being a pain to write, but I love getting them so I do write them. Should probably follow your lead and just write a few.
I have to go through my Christmas tote today. I have one tote for Christmas thats it. We bought new stocking last year and tree skirt I have to donate the others
I'm donating my tree this year. It just feels like work to put it up and taking it down. So it's going. I may get a small one later on. I'm working on going through my decorations and donate what I no longer want.
My daughter keeps a mini one in her room all year round, and I keep mini ones in the closets in the guest rooms, fully decorated, so I can easily pull them out when we have Christmas guests. Very handy!
*hugs* (if that's ok). I'm sorry to hear about your father's condition. thank you for this video. Love the family scenes. 😊 That toy is a bowling ball and pins set. .... Skittles are candy. I'm kind of the other way around... I used to LOVE winter and I would be so excited with the first snowfall, and stuff.... but in the last few years and especially this year.... I have almost been dreading it... and not enjoying it as much as I used to. =/ we've had enough snow that I had to shovel .... but today it's raining the snow has almost all melted away.
I still hate winter. I have not learned acceptance. I have slowly stopped worrying about sending Christmas cards too and I finally decluttered my cards I kept and it felt good. 😊
Good for you! As for winter, it really helped me to focus on some of the positive aspects - twinkly lights, fewer bugs, a beautiful snowfall... And proper warm clothing has been a must!
Hi Laura! Will you be moving before next christmas? I f so, you might take to oppertunity to purge christmas items and other seasonal decor etc in the beginning of the season and take the overflow to a donationcenter/shelter/consignement shop aso now, instead of having to take care of it just before the move and perhaps not in the right season.
Thrift Stores/ Charity Shops in my area take all decorations any time of year. They have a separate room for all holiday decorations and pull them out accordingly. It's great that I don't have to wait to declutter and donate.
@@donnab2810 Nice! tho very uncommon. In loads of places/cities all around the globe they will not take holiday/christmas items other times than in the late fall and if they get some in late winter, spring and summer they just bin them.
Noob. I have 4984. Because I keep having to delete or move some. Once you get to 5000 in watch later, RUclips won't let you save anything to any play list.
@@thatswhatisaid8908 Good to know. 😅 I will try not to let that happen. It's a pity that either there is no option or I can't find the option to delete them all. We have to figure it out somehow 😉
Kids referring to the 90s as 1900s grinds my gears. I was raised by boomer teachers and it was apparently important for me to memorise that 1900s refers to the hundred years prior to the year 1900 ie: 1800-1899. Why did I have to know this!! Can’t I be blissfully ignorant about this unnecessary gripe.
My saying for 2024: "Everything I need, I already have."
Love that!

💕
I also love that for you! That’s something we can all stand to remember.
Thank you! I just wrote this down for my 2024 no buy year
I found I enjoyed winter when I started wearing warmer clothes. It makes a huge difference.
I made this same decision a few years ago and I totally agree.

I just purchased the planner! Now to teach myself how to use it....procrastination is middle name. Hoping the Dec 2023 part will be my practice area!

Yup! 😂 We spell it craic. It's an Irish (Gaelic) word.

Much better than boring ol' bowling pins. 😉
Does that mean you are not doing anymore RUclips videos,?
I'll still be making videos, just not these ones.
I've got way too many 'watch later' videos saved!! 🙈
On youtube's watch later list I have 1786 videos 😅😅 I... even can't explain myself.

Will you ever say which organ you dad needed? How is the cancer battle going? Is he better?
They were able to remove the tumour when they did the transplant, thankfully. So far so good! He needed a new liver due to an autoimmune disease.

I think maybe they were confusing the 1900s with the 19th century.
The "end the patriarchy" vibe is not it. 😂
Down with the patriarchy 🔥
