My first tractor that I had bought my dads Farmall M stock ,I used it 1year ran good but no power ,So me being who I am needed power so I tore it down instal fire craters milled the head ,drilled out carb installed MW govoner kit and went 35 HP to 58 HP on Dyno .then I could pull 4: 14 s my 12 ft field cultivator and my 12 Ft Massey disc ,back in 1972
@terrycannon570 Propane might still be an economically viable option considering gasoline prices these days. Cost about the same or less to refill a forklift-sized propane cylinder at Tractor Supply as it does to buy 4 gallons of gas.
Always loved the Farmall M. Lovehow it would turn over slow and just when you think it wouldn't start she would fire right up. Dad had one sold it and years later bought another one. He put a farmhand F 11 loader on it. Great tractors along with the H
That old M is sure in pristine shape but i bet its put in its fair share of hard work in the past , If it were mine i would probably re-build the whole engine for peace of mind , Great video JT !
Excellent video JT :) for my help hand ✋ to help 1951 Farmall M tractor of friend Matt has in your garage and hope tell try this out bet make run like new! First get Carburetor rebuilt to also have low rpm at 750 to 800 and mix set have just hair pinch on lean to! Second put Platinum Spark Plugs in with High QUALITY Suppression wires , gap plugs 0.25 to 0.35 foul and clean points to 0.15 to 0.20 .foul on gap points! Next run 10w30 engine oil no synthetic White Bottle of Castrol GTX plus change every 3 months plus oil filter cannister and in fuel tank every use 89 octane with 5% Ethonal no higher 5% and 90 octane or higher with 0% Ethonal too always ! I fuel filter changes in Spring and Fall Season each year 2 times! Also put black or grey of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank too each month too in 30 days! Plus tell him add 1 gallon of Desiel on fuel of gas run in each time of full tank fuel it clean motor like new too ! If does not want Desiel fuel add in gas can use GM Automatic Transmission fluid 2 or 3 type to gas ! It help lots and check air filter chamber plus add 10w30 engine oil on cup in spring and fall season! Last thing clean Mushroom cap on Air Filter Chamber box to every 3 months and last one check charged system on battery and Generator or Alternator has plus belt! Water pump plus Thermostat and Antifreeze clean Green too plus 50/50 mix with Distill water also not old and rusted! I know lots Canada farmers gas move up 5 % Ethonal gas or higher 90 + octane gas with no Ethonal % to gas tractor plus combines and even old vechiles 1986 or older too ! Ethonal to rich at like gum to fuel system even small engine to don't like Ethonal more 5%!
Wish I could find my grandpa’s M. He restored it or had it painted in the mid 80’s then sat at his house in town after the home farm sold. Right by the water tower in Stanton MI, Ken Hansen. Relatives don’t know who he sold it to, was a local. Great video
That's a really great looking old Farmall. Love the gauges. Delorian must've liked Farmalls too. Lol. Thanks for the vid. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of this one.
Yup I had similar once, the valve stem oil seals had hardened and cracked letting oil trickle down the valves into the cylinders, looks like you might have the same problem. Might be worth whipping the head off and check those valve seals, guides and seats. You are on the right track though.
I had an M with power steering and hydraulic three pount wide front .I loved that tractor. I found that using synthetic oil does not foul plugs or blue smoke . I ran heaviest oil 20w50 synthetic in old motors. On one motor which burned huge amounts of oil i used cheap outboard 2 stroke oil in crankcase . Still running for years. I just add a quart every time I use it . For a parade show tractor this would be fine . Excellent channel 👍 Thank you
My guess is valve guides and seals. If Matt wants his 51m to run top dog it needs those two things done. Probably the head pulled off and shaved to get 120 on each cylinder then she will pull a three bottom plow in soft soil. If this happened no more oil smoke out the exhaust.
You will get the mic figured out in time. Sucks when you put your hard earned money into something better and it isn't. Lord knows farmers are not audio technicians and so do your viewers, Keep the great content coming JT.
Nice work JT, you will get it figured out how to make her run like new again! Hey I was just thinking maybe you could make her run like an m I have been watching for years pulling at our fair "Farmall M 13,000lb Tractor Pull", if you have a minute type that in your search bar and watch that M!!!
Something you might check, hopefully it hasn't happened and too late for the rings to be washed out already, check the pipe to the oil bath air cleaner, for a muddauber nest, wasp nest, and/ or a mouse in the oil bath part. The Case R my Dad restored sat in a barn for a long time and occasionally started by family members, and the old Wakesha needed rebuilt before , the mud dauber nest in the air pipe surely didn't do the rings any good either!! Now, the mouse in the oil, I had a buddy a long time ago, rebuilt the carb, drained the tank, wires, plugs points,, but, still every time he would brush hog with a Jubilee, hit a bump it would choke it self out UNMERCIFULLY to a shut down, and fill the crankcase with gas to. He called me and I was on the way over , he was draining the 2 stroke mix out of crankcase, AGAIN, and decided to dump the oil out of oilbath air cleaner, and heard a PLOP and then the dead mouse smell hit him, that drowned in the oil, and would suck up somehow and choke the air off to the carb!! I know mudaubers like hit and miss pancake mufflers to, and when the muffler gets hot, they fall off, and usually when the engine is on the exhaust lockout coasting ,and sucked in the cyl which means the head has to come off!! Not sure if a mouse can get in a Farmall air pipe top , but I never heard of a mouse getting in Jubilee either, or a oil bath cleaner, but I bet mudaubers can, IF you have them in MI. Yeah take a 2 lb hammer to your mic to fix it LOL.
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 i had a mouse nest in the upper section of the oil bath air filter on a Case DC it made the tractor run rich and it burned oil out of the oil bath making it smoke.
check the wear on the distributor shaft I have seen them bad enough that the points would open and close when the shaft was wiggled if that is the problem you can convert it to electronic ignition or put a rebuilt distributor on it
Nice one j.t. sounds and looks like valve problems that tractor has done some hard pulling and taken the weakest valve out. Buy the sounds of it and the oil ever one can see . L.o.l. don't like your new mic had to turn my volume right down to make so I could just make out what you were saying. But Nice tractor it needs the love. From Andy in uk
your plugs are too cold so 1 of them is fouled and thats why its skipping, plugs are always the first thing you check put champion D21 plugs in it and check the valve lash and check the timing. the timing will make a difference on how hot it runs and if it fouls the plugs then run straight weight oil like 40 or 50 weight. why do you have different plugs in it?
JT, did u cleaned-off the black stuff on cylinder no2?? What is the reason for having the hooks hanging-on a chain?? great job getting her running again. Fluffy much be catching rats in the corn field..
Well, I suppose that is a possibility, but how does fuel leak “up”? This is an updraft carb, if anything leaks from the bowl it just goes on the ground
JT have you tried Kroil at all? It’s a bit pricey I was thinking about giving it a shot. Then again I may just stay with old blaster and ATF. Any thoughts?
So has your weather dried up some in the last week or so? Been pretty hot and dry down here in Ohio lately. Just thinking about your untiled field and hoping it's getting better.

My Grandad had nine Farmall M on his 2,000 acre cattle and hog operation, one for every purpose and location. They are hard not to like.
That’s for sure!
My daddy had one but ours ran on Propane. Back then propane was a lot cheaper.
@terrycannon570 Propane might still be an economically viable option considering gasoline prices these days. Cost about the same or less to refill a forklift-sized propane cylinder at Tractor Supply as it does to buy 4 gallons of gas.
I planted a lot of seeds and mowed a lot of hay with an M every day growing up.
As always nice work JT. The In Memory Of plaque on the side is a nice touch. RIP Sodbuster, your friends are taking good care of your tractor. ❤
Thank you kindly!
Nice Job J.T !👍
Wish you a nice week.

Good Morning J T , Nice M . I've always wanted to get a Ol "H" and make it into a good tractor again. Maybe someday. Enjoy your day. 😊
Thanks 👍
sounds like a nice weather job, hey hope you have a used oil burner for that nice new shop. You know oldman weather will be beating on the door soon
I’d sure be able to use one!
OK, your on the right track . It could need valve work . IF it has a crack near the valve seat or guides are worn oil suction will happen .👍 thanks
Great point!
I would try hotter heat range, spark plugs
Valve stem seals are my first look,,you also said its not a daily so old gas can cause running issues....😊

Great video JT. Love your diagnostic skills. Hope the owner wants to dig a lil deeper and make the old girl purr like new again. Good luck.🤜🤛
He will. Hopefully this winter we can dig into it
Good job Dr , let us know what it was, also it can be difficult some times when your diagnostic tool is to long 😂
For sure 😆😆
That oil patch bothers me. I am with you, i think she is due for a top end rebuild. I question if the head has a slight warp to it.
It very well might.
Since is has good compression seems to me valve seals must be ok. The oil burning I suspect could be from a bad oil ring on a piston. Just a thought.
Possibly
Hope to see you finish the little Ferguson first. Then work on the M soon
I will. The m won’t get the head pulled till winter
New value springs really helps them ole girls

Fluffy much be catching rats in the corn field..
I did clean that goo off. Fluffy has been quite the critter catcher lol
Its overfull on oil...fuel has been leaking into crankcase...change oil...use diesel oil as it still has detergent in it and will clean everything up.
Well, I suppose that is a possibility, but how does fuel leak “up”?
This is an updraft carb, if anything leaks from the bowl it just goes on the ground
Love this. Fad has a Farmal 320. Bad audio this time.
Yeah. The new mic is junk

A great video as always, do you think the bores might be glazed as you said it has only had very light use for many years.
