That’s how I organize my groups/busses. Not by instruments but by frequency ranges.
So, You’ll have like a snare and a vocal in the same bus?
@@blakeb8139 Haha, Good question! Probably not. But that depends on the vocal‘s purpose. If the vocal was upfront I would treat it separately, if it’s in the background like a pad sound, I wouldn’t. Maybe.
@@EISERMANN80 Give me an example of some of the instruments you’d group. Obviously Kick/bass would be grouped in the low range, but like what is an example of some of the stuff you’d put in the mid and highs, or you may even break it down as far as low/low-mid/mid/high- mid/high. I don’t know. I’ve thought about trying that, but it just kinda seemed more novelty than anything
@@blakeb8139 From a project I’m working on: [kick, (sub) bass] - [several drum loops with competing low end] - [bass synth, lead synth] - [snares, percussion] - [hats, rides] and a group for FX returns. There are no vocals in this track. If there were, I would carve out space in the frequencies for it where needed - on the buss(es).
So that would be the low end (up to mids), low mids to mids (percussive), low mids to mids (non-percussive), mids, high end. The ranges will overlap. I think a big part is also the percussive/non-percussive aspect.
Thats pretty … genius in long term bruh
I like to see it as a cube, you can move things up and down by cutting lows or highs and you can also bring things closer with compression and move them back with reverb among others things, as soon as I started to figure my mixes like this they improved a lot
Yeah compression settings can really help you push things forward or back
Facts
Gain staging and panning combined with mono low end and separated instruments for space and clarity will instantly make your mixes better and easier on the ear!! Good luck
Makes so much sense when you break it down like this
MAN! FROM DAY ONE FINDING YOUR PAGE NOTHING I MAN NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZEMENT AND IVE BEEN AT THIS SINCE I WAS 16 MIXING MY OWN MUSIC
"you got stuff going on in the bass" wow ty very helpful, basically summarize the usefulness of your whole channel
This was a helpful way of visualizing it. Thank u
Learned that alone over time, but good tip!
So close to the well deserved 50k subs!
Yep, so basic, but so insightful. Another reminder to use your ears. Top work fella. x
You just keep dropping gems. If had a mixing and mastering course, I'd probably buy it.
I do 😂😂😂
Straight to the point.
Please make a video going into more detail I just had to do this with a mix. I would love that.
I’ve only just found your channel but these tips, incl. this one, are wonderful!
It's good to know I'm doing things right. Thanks man nice advice
I love the concept short video, i love the concept of that mixing too
Really appreciate, these quick helpful tips 👏
thank you brother this helps a lot
Another astute lesson! Those competing freqs, sucking up the speaker's energy!
With the L3 Etc seems like every inch of sound is maxed out !
Awesome 🙌 thank you
wow , i literally needed this tip , perfect timing
It's also important to point out that most tracks shouldn't be *forced* to *only* occupy that one frequency range by doing extreme highpassing and lowpassing. If you do this to anything really important in your mix, It can disappear on certain speaker systems. I learned this recently.
For instance, If you have a guitar that mainly exists in the low mids, so you completely low pass the high mids, then chances are that guitar is going to dissappear on laptop speakers that don't have much representation below 400 hz.
It's best to think about how things occupy different frequency ranges when creating the arrangement. So all you have to do in the mix is balance your faders and then subtly emphasize or de-emphasize frequencies with your EQ.
Also, arrangement is key. Don't clutter your mix, get the basics right and keep it minimal if possible.
Great tip!!
Quick i need a piece of paper , this is simple yet gold
Thanks for the awesome tip
Simple, but it really does work.
Nice and quick.
Thank you 💛
Short and sweet again
Great stuff !
Great video thanks
Also LCR panning is great sometimes!
Brilliant explanation. But for newbie like me, is there any video of yours showing this in the praxis?
Creating space for all the elements in your mix is the secret to a great song
Well done.
King!
Good stuff
Genius! 💥💥💥
Critical band theory. Along with mono compatibility, it's less about music streaming platforms but is basic engineering practice: preventing masking in both the frequency and time domains (arrangement).
Remember: perhaps not every recorded track in a mix session needs to make it into the final mix.
I still cannot mix/master my songs properly 🥺 but I love your videos please one day make a video about how to set the right volume for ( hats, bass , vocals 🙏😍😜😊)
Hi I create a visual equalizer on my mixer and with EQs for the separate frequency bands then rout instrument tracks to whatever for epic sound design with no mud.... I also add panning to some frequencies but not the others and same with reverb to place a frequency band in the back of the mix
Nice board explanation Streaky. and nothing has exploded yet ?
🔥🔥🔥thanks
This is literally Izotope “Visual mixer”!!
So place one kick and one snare and call it a day? Lots of space in that one
If you can yes
Worked for Pharrell
This is very true when it comes to mixing, you should space out your sounds for a better image. It's called "Stereo Imaging". All the pro's do this 👍
Only Streaky can make panning sound this good😂
God bless you
Thanks
@Streaky Thanks! What about the depth of the field? I mean the distance to the ... "hypothetical" microphone/recording device (closer or farther away). Is there a way to move the sounds closer or farther away on that axis? I mean, beside the option to play back the sounds through the speakers and recording them again through a mic set at the desired distance. Is there an "in the box" trick to do this? Is it possible to take a synth sound and make it sound closer or farther away? Asked this question a few engineers already and nobody answered. I would greatly appreciate your answer/a video response. Thanks in advance!
I did this when I started out mixing. It makes sense, right? But I got way clearer, wider, and better mixes when I only hard panned 100% or kept things centered, and nothing in between. But if it works for you, then power to you.
I agree with what you're saying, just thought I'd mention that painting is one thing and frequency displacement is another....so panning 100% on one track and panning 50% on another track for example is only effective if those two different tracks sit in different frequency ranges in your EQ....hope this helps 👌
Sorry meant to say panning not painting lol
When I first listened to uptown funk in my studio I was really surprised at the way everything was panned, none of it seemed symmetrical or like a literal stage either. All the space seemed filled but I was like why are the horns over there? And why is the guitar lick poking out on the side like that? Obviously no worries with how that mix sounds haha I’ll take this advice on board!
That’s a great sounding track...on my ref list
okay, so say I have a whole drum kit i am mixing. I usually put the kick drum in parallel with the rest of the kit. If I group the kick drum and the bass together wouldn't that be problematic?
I kind of agree to a certain extent. But mixing in mono allows you to hear any clashing frequencies. Because even if you are listening in stereo it can still get to your ears in mono, if you are standing far enough away from the source. So this Idea should be done when you have got everything else right with the mix. Like EQ, effects, levels, and compression.
Check out the bx_PanEQ plugin in the Plugin Alliance bundle. Makes this so easy. I love using it on a drum bus
Easy panning the low end
bullseye!
i really love short clips... directly delivers the point @Streaky
But if we are arranging the mix through panning, it won't affect the mono speakers like the phone.. So how to fix that
Any tip for sounding good in mobile phone
I have trouble because my ocd if I pan left wants me to equal pan right, I want everything symmetrical. But maybe I'm limiting myself?
Try to be more creative
Most of us have both brains math and logic isn’t artistry and creativity per say so try to find your own balance 😎
Make your ocd balance itself because in it of itself it’s unbalanced
Make some messes leave some clutter 😝
I heard Chris Lord always Pan all his instrument either Center or 100% or 50% right or left in a mix. Never between.. Any thought about that streaky?
Can’t argue with cla
So I should mix in mono?
I take the approach of an element is either panned hard left or hard right. I was watching pensado talk about "big mono" and was wondering your thoughts for someone trying to learn EDM production. Am I missing out on things by not experimenting with those in between panning points?
Streaky stays liking comments without responding 😂
This only works on stereo sources, if you’re listening in mono it should still sound good with EQ work
🔥🔥🔥🔥
My first release it out now called Wishing on One- wanted to share for your consideration!! :))
Has anyone tried his online mastering course?..I want to master my own music but some people say you should never do that. Should I buy the course or spend my money on plugins instead and pay a mastering engineer?
But what id my lead has like two instrument playing at the same time the same notes?
even if listening in mono?
Does this help at all when it’s heard in mono?
Is that not the same idea to do every mix ?
How can you dislike? I don't understand... Simple yet very useful tip!
Panning is volume and EQ!! Make space man!! It's like a pizza 🍕! Pan Pizza!! Haha!
I do this. I make sure nothing is panned exactly in the same position.
At the same time, don't have everything panned out too much, as it won't sound wide without contrast, need some things more centered with just a few elements wide, and that will result in a way wider mixdown
@@UncleBenjs yep, alot of things are in the middle and I usually don't pan anything wider than 80%
@@erikkroll2154 do you ever pan your reverb returns in for the elements you have sitting further back in your mix? That can work wonders at creating depth
@@UncleBenjs I mostly mix death metal. Reverb gets real messy with that kind of stuff.
@@erikkroll2154 Are you setting your reverbs pre delays correctly for the different front to back aspects of the instruments?
I swear to god you must have hacked my computer! Again! this is exactly what I do now for like four days or so. :D
same with the compression cocktail. :D I can't describe how good it feels doing things intuitively the way an actual mastering engineer would do them. I still have a long way to go but being on the right track gives me the confidence to speed up my workflow. Thank you so much for sharing all these informations for free. You are awesome!
and about mono compatibilità ?
analog summing tutorial?😃
Analog summing with plugins... is it possible or am I just a big ball of noobness
@@segurojames there’s plugins that sound like analog, but all plugins are digital it’s not the same
But how to pan like that

LCR

LOVE THIS , the 2 people who disliked this are haters.
... hating themselves for not saying it first 😄
Or at all 😂😂😂 it’s all good for the yt algorithm so last laugh on them 😂👍👍
Lol, at long last, they're being acknowledged for something in life!!
I didn’t dislike this but I can understand why someone would. The lesson itself is great and Streaky is a good teacher but generally mixing tutorials in shorts come across cold and a lot less in depth. I get it’s part of the game now but when you build a fan base on a topic with a set format and that format drastically changes, not everyone is going to like it. That doesn’t automatically make them haters or like these weird toxic people y’all are making them seem like.
@@NEWGUYofficial True. On the other hand it‘s a bit weird to dislike a tip. I hope nobody got hurt 😉
But than on mono devices it gonna sound bad
I thought the less things that were panned the greater the sense of stereo image? also the more that things are not hard panned LCR the greater the blur and less clarity. Love to hear your thoughts streaky. BTW your still awesome!
I think what gives the sense of stereo image depends on how clear you can picture that. So what needs to be in the middle, keep it there. Pan what should be on the extremes then start working on what's in between. It gives you much more leeway to decide how you distribute all that space.
U just drew the flower of life bro. Google it
Great little tip, and maybe add in some gulfoss and soothe, and you're a long way:)
Guys Guys.....🖐😱😱 Stop with being too technical The thing which makes the music sale is not how clean it is. But how much it makes you want to move, sing or go crazy. Get some black groove going and a sweet melody. No need for UAD or N87 ....get some soual in you.
By making something beautiful and different. The "artists" which are unable to do that should stop putting their rubbish on the market and look for other job - something they can really do - constructions, agriculture ...

Uhmmm can you show this in a more practical manner??
Bullshit. Good mix should sound good in mono. Just mix in mono and your fine
