Hey Tom - I am the longtime tour manager for The Ventures. Nokie was a dear friend and a mentor. His passing signaled the end of original Ventures. I think you did a fine job in capturing the vibe of Out of Limits. Nokie probably never played it exactly as you did. He developed a fingerstyle technique that he employed on many songs. Many years ago, I asked him why he liked fingerstyle. He said "I get a bigger sound". If Bob Bogle (The Ventures original lead player) played Out of Limits, it would have been just as you did it. Keep up the great work. And thanks for helping to keep this music alive and relevant.

@@tomcon21 Nokie and Chet were good friends. Even though Nokie was recognized by many as a "surf guitar pioneer", he loved country. Yearly, he would go to Nashville to hang with the country pickers at the CAAS convention. He would also record a solo album at a local studio. We had a cool song in The Ventures shows that really showcased his country picking, called I Got A Woman. Here is a good YT link: ruclips.net/video/LF_bkgvkR4A/видео.html It doesnt get any better than this. It features Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards and Don Wilson, the three original Ventures guitar players. Nokie is playing his signature Hitchhiker Guitar. It has tone from hell. Many nights, when I had the guitars in my hotel room, I would noodle on it. An amazing guitar for sure. He loved to play through Roland JC-120s, because they were so clean, and consistent on the road.
I am a massive Ventures fan and I have some questions! Did Nokie ever show you his original Red Rhodes prototype fuzz and compressor pedals - did he still have them after the 60's? What did Nokie think of Jerry Reed? Did The Ventures ever talk to you about Eddie Brackett, who engineered many of their sessions in the 60's? We all know what Don and Nokie thought of the Mosrite, but what did Bob Bogle think of the Mosrite bass as an instrument?
What a great rendition of this great surf tune. Nokie would approve, God rest his soul.

Another favorite Ventures song of mine, I love how it has that bit of spookiness to it but that's a great lead part/solo as well, it really cooks! Thank you for doing this one Tom! 👍

Excellent I will work on this next week for sure. I know a different version but yours is better and more complete. Thanks a ton for the uploads. I believe there is a group of us who really appreciate your work. I have been into The Ventures and The Shadows for a long time. I love all surf music. I just finished knowing how to play the song K-39 by the Challengers.

I absolutely love the tone you're getting with that Jazzmaster! I'd describe it somewhere between "nasty" and "sweet", just enough growl to really open up those pickups, but not so much that the tone thins out and becomes nasally, or, even worse, oversaturated and muddy. I usually play punk music, but I love surf as well. I don't know if surf punk exists, but if it does, I'd imagine your tone would be number 1. I suppose Dead Kennedys count as surf punk in a way? Anyways, fantastic playing, my friend, and have a wonderful day!
