Hey to everyone!!
We are two young adults, Despina 25 and Deivids 27 renovating an old farm house from 1817 in Latvia.
Everything in and out of our house has been done by ourselves with no hired help.
DIY is going to apply to nearly everything in our house. Our budget is tight and that has made us appreciate every “ugly” part of this house and turn it into something new and beautiful.
We give new life to things that others would throw away!
In this journey we are not alone! We are starting up our little Farmily:
8 Goats & 2 Bucks
9 chickens & 4 Roosters
and 3 Geese
Oh yeah and our cat Ivi & Dog Keita
Despite our daily problems we are two young people full of joy and happiness, ready to start a new crazy chapter in our life. It wouldn’t be fair to keep this fun just for us!
That’s why we want YOU to also be part of our Farmily!!
We love our very supportive community!!
Thank you so much for the support you are giving us. Every view, like, share, subscribe and financial support means a lot to us. Any support is extremely appreciated!

Extend the concrete floor and then go with the longer stairs for sure.
Hey the two little ones were just writing their names in the cement. 🐾🐾🐾🥰🥰
You two always manage to make things work out and are good planners in deciding what will be done next on your homestead. You work with what you have. Easy for others to criticize when they aren’t working with a very tight budget and not in the best weather conditions either. I hope you have a great sense of accomplishment. I think you two are impressive young people and I wish more young people had your drive and ambition. 👍🏻
You two are so tiny , but you make hauling heavy wood look so easy. Now that's strength.
You could make a landing for the shorter stairs and make the 3 steps you need go on the side away from the wall. So that would keep u away from wall with the window as well.
I agree!
That’s also a good idea
Finish the concrete slab and think about it while you do it.
Whatever you choose to do - please make sure to have handrails installed for safety 🙏.
Great idea, just what I was thinking. When I was a teen ager my parents moved into a house with a full basement. It had indoor access as well as a cellar door outside. The inside stairs had no handrails. As a kid, I was always afraid I'd fall and die down those dark stairs with no hand rails. Yikes.
FIRST - level the floor joists in a solid and permanent manner!!
Once that's done you'll have a solid place to start from.
All things being equal, it's infinitely easier to shorten than to lengthen.
Use the longer steps.
oh my god ivi's paw prints in the concrete 😭❤️ so cute
If you plan to convert the roof of the barn to a guest house I’d go with the nicer ladder, don’t cut it and place it in a wider angle so it won’t be so steep, I know there’s not a lot of room downstairs and it might be too tight of a fit but if Despina’s parents will stay there you probably have to think of the safety aspect.🙂
What would be really cool would be to source an old metal ladder with a handrail, like they used to have in those old soviet colhoz type of buildings, it would fit the workshop aesthetic☺️ No, I’m not joking, I have weird taste in interior decor…probably.
I think we will use the big ladder we will have to cut it since the ladder is made for a taller room. Currently if you even put it at a less steep angle the steps will be sideways, not levelled. So cutting is only way to make it work. It will have the same steepness as our house since they are identical ladders. I vision this place looking great in a year or two! 😊❤️
@@DoBeDiff I have no doubt it will look great ☺️
That idea of using a repurposed industrial metal ladder would be a great look too.
1st figure out the angle you want for the stairs so you miss the door like you said, then hang the beam level at the top, then think how to fix/change the long stair case, then measure and cut the long stairs and fix it. 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
if you lengthen the concreate pad back towards the wall it would drop the top level with upstairs.....dont cut them make pad bigger that will increase the angle making the stairs fit
There is😊 an option of building a landing and have a short staircase up to the platform then turn and walk up the long stair case.
your editing is phenomenally good.
Cut the long ones down and use the those removed step treads to replace the broken ones. Great use of the stairs and clears them out from the attic area.
I love your music choices, it always suits the video and activity. 💗🇨🇦
Yes I agree your music choice adds to the drama of your precarious balancing on the beams. Kinda like seeing an episode from Mission Impossible. Yes I'm old school. Great Job. I love seeing your projects progress and also you guys recycling materials. I live on a budget also. Keep up the good work! 👍
Use the long stairs and use the short ones for a vegetable holder
So much work it’s going to be worth it health and strength to enjoy for years to come xxx❤❤
Eevie signed the work for you
Whenever you are doing renovations on old buildings that don't have level walls or ceilings it always results in complications. Your situation with the barn is very time consuming and will use all of Deivids many talents to make it work in the end. I am sure that you two will be successful in making the second story floor livable .👍👍👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🤩❤
Love the signatures..🐾❤
Use the long stair and cutting of what is necessary and put it back on. Love this video, it is great to see how you two solving problems and think in solutions !!! And those little cat paws on the concrete floor......mmmm they staying forever !
You guys are amazing. 🥰❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The stairs are a vital part of the renovation. Your decision will be a good one! 👍
Do the wall!
Definitely the solid option
Why not make turn landing3-4 stairs from the bottom.
Cut the long ones and install straight. If you put a landing platform in, you'll probably have overhead height issues with the floor above
I think that you could copy the house staircase in order to make the best ladder. Your house staircase ends to a bird's mouth cutting, I think that what it's called. This makes the top extra stable, it clips on the floor and has bigger capability in carrying weight. This one is like you nail it to the air since it is only face with the wood beam.
Definitely use the first set.
As per previous videos… To build upstairs in the house it would need a whole new roof. The barn roof is in better shape. So much less cost to fix up the barn second floor at this time. D&D have the time and energy ❤ to build but $ is tight! Just FYI… 😊
I wld use the king stairs as they are very solid just cut them shorter…use the other stairs for vegetables…
Good work and planning. Use the longer length set, as they will be stronger & safer.
Let's talk stairs friends. Both sets were used as temporary stairs on construction sites. That is why they are beat up. When the job was finished, the temporary stairs were pulled out and went back into storage for the next job. And the finish carpenters built a nice set of stairs out of fine wood. That is how I would think of what you are doing here - temporary construction stairs. The short stairs with the rotten stringer at the top is firewood or short steps to the chicken coop, front door of the house stacked nesting boxes for the chickens - adaptive reuse or firewood.
Use the long stairs. Check out the condition of the stringers that will sit on the slab. Are they good and solid or should you cut one step off to get to sound wood? That is step one. Put some sort of vapor barrier between the bottom of the stringer and the slab so the stringer stays dry. Now set the stairs in place level them in all directions using the straight and true rammed earth wall as your leveling point. Make sure the treads are level - side to side and front to back. Make certain ALL risers are the same height from the cement slab to the first step and the last step to the finished floor. Identical rise, top to bottom.
Now mark the height of your FINISHED floor on the top of the stringer (level from the rammed earth wall) and make your cuts.
Secure the stringer to the top beam and install two temporary posts to the stringer mid way as temporary support.
Now - leveling the second floor. You will have to "sister" good quality construction lumber to the old rafters to make a level floor. Don't worry about the droop in the old rafters - they will never be straight. Use one piece of lumber to span the distance - wall to wall. As you are installing the new rafters to the old beams, treat all of the wood with wood borer killer/repellant.
So you can build out the second floor - EVERYTHING has to come out of the second floor. You can make another addition like you did for your van or use the van roof to store all of your wood and tarp the van.
Bite the bullet and clean out the second floor - all of it. You will likely have to build a new space to store ALL of your wood that is not firewood. OK? 🤓👍
This information on the stair building is so wonderful of you to share this. It's nice to have a contractor in your pocket. 😊
@@diannabrooks I built a lot of staircases. Happy to share the experience with young people (anyone really) that is trying to make a better life. Thank you for the compliment! 🤓👍
I would clean everything out on the top floor then once you have it all levelled work out about the stairs. Greetings from Australia.
Use the longer stairs, given you will be carrying so much materials up and down all the time you will appreciate the less steep steps in the future.
Hard and heavy work. Enjoy watching your videos. Thank you 💖
I say use the long stairs! Good luck!
Put the stairs "upside"down and the other "side" towards you, where is not worn out steps, so the worn out side is not so big problem... 🤔🤔
Good job...that was easy..
Use the first stairs they look better!👍
Labāk būtu pārtaisīt garākās trepes.
Make new stairs. Call your wood guy. You don’t want anyone falling. Make the stairs the proper depth. You have time. You will feel better about the project knowing it is safe for guests. Peace and Love.
I believe to cut the long stairs, yes.
Also I was thinking that your Concrete Pad needed to extend further than you made it, then your stair angle would be better
use the long stairs
use the longer stairs... ~ or build all new stairs might be the best way.
I would the long stairs and just keep the length like a ladder for now.
Stairway to heaven👍
First the floors, the walls and the roof David. The stairs must be big and very long, because people will go up and and down with things in hands, like luggages and other, and they should be more comfortable than climb in a tree house. Do not cut the longer stairs, use it all as it is. You need more concreed so they lay smoother amd lower.
I feel extending the slab and fitting the long stairs would be an easier, more attractive and more permanent choice.
Why didn’t you use a spirit level when putting the beam across the top for the stairs??? 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
🌟👏👍🍀💐
Did you think about putting the guest house stairs on the outside of the building with some kind of cover over them to keep snow out?
Put the longer stairs in and cut them off to fit. You can deal with the issue of needing stairs later when (or if) you need to. Go forward, "The problems of the current day are enough to deal wih. Tommorrow will take care of itself." Mathew 6: 33-34 Holy Bible. :)
I wondered why you couldn’t turn the stairs around and walk upstairs the opposite direction I felt like that would make more sense, especially if you’re carrying things up and down the stairs. But then you just explained about the beam so maybe that’s why?
Other Way points into the roof so no head space at the top. Would be nice but not in this case! 😊
Evie!!
The stairs look very steep
I think you should just build yourself new stairs. Joining the short one just won't work. You could cut the longer one, but it is still really steep. Extend the concrete pad, use the additional space and build new stairs that fit.
I'd use the longer set of stairs. Save the aggravation and just cut where you need to.
Steps are confusing...good luck.
Use the longer stairs
Suggestion: 1. Finish the garage first. 2. Then the roof. 3.Then the floors on the second floor. 4. Replace the current windows with the double glazed. -- To keep the second floor warm you will need to put insulation on the garage celling, the roof ceilings and all the walls. The big question is, are the existing walls strong enough to last for years. Once Dessy gets pregnant all the work will take longer because she won't be able to help much especially after the baby is born.
Who are you speaking for? I did projects up until the last days of my pregnancy, including land clearing without any heavy machinery. Your not giving her or any person who desires to be pregnant any credit.
I would cut the longer stairs. Can the other stairs be used in the goat barn to make it easier to use the upstairs there?
Build your own stairs. Fresher are better
👍👍😊😊
Why don't you want to finish the porch?
We will get it started again now since the weather is getting better. We had winter the whole time and couldn't do any of the needed work.
@@DoBeDiff Thanks for the answer and can't wait to see it.
why not use both . Put one set against the wall ,,a small platform to turn right onto the second set of steps into the apartment . you can make a storage closet under the stairs
Why not make concrete steps at the bottom of the stairs?
Again, can't you use the long stairs thru the outside, against barn, going up to a new door, straight to guest room, instead of going thru working area.
Be careful.
Any sign of the storks yet?
Why not let parents sleep in your bedroom and you sleep in van. That barn is not some place to put your guest. Put a large camping tent and cots in your yard for you or your guest. Just some suggestions.
Why don't you use the upstairs of your house to make rooms for guests . And finish
I keep watching this and have to wonder why not work on the upstairs of your home and forget trying to make a liveable room in this d building. Just seems like a waste of time and money. I wish I was rich and could help you guys
They need space for their extended family that is coming to visit and this project is less expensive. The upstairs of their house is a huge project and they do not have the funds.
Our house needs new roof and two roof rafters replaced that is a 20k project at least so I doubt that this will cost anything even close. We have very low budget and have to do things that we can afford and this barn doesn't need much to be able to host people. Roof is great and the beams just need to be raised back up and supported properly. I would love to do many projects on the house but currently on RUclips we are on a downfall and can't afford much in terms of projects, barely can live from this!
@@DoBeDiffI think that you're doing an amazing job! Can't wait to see the work as you progress! It's going to look amazing and be so comfy once it's completed! I love this idea!
Turn the staircase to the building wall that is the 5 cm taller.
I really wish we could help this darling couple. They put out such great videos and really could use our support. Please join me in becoming a member or a patreon. It’s as little as $5 a month and will make a difference if more of us do it.
Build you own steps. Try not use steps not for your barn
Cut the long!
I hope you got a tetanus vaccine recently. Just to make sure everything will be all right in those "'protective" crocs-like slippers.
