Good greif, Jeff. I'm going to save this video for the next time my wife complains about how many tools I have or buy. Thank you for that, sir. I think 12 is a good starting number for ratchets, 4 lengths in each drive, and at least one of them a flex-head. I do want one of those KTC ratchets. I think I'll get the long one first. I wish that Carlyle was still available.
I haven’t used a Roto head ratchet yet. Thinking I am going to have to try one out. Not to add another series for you but a comparison of a couple would help out on what brand to choose without just getting one off the tool truck.
I got the old school SK roto thats a bit longer, the head is larger but the handle is super sturdy. That thing has took a lot of hard times, best part is SK rebuilds are cheap and east to find. Still that compact head roto seems super nice.
First of all,i want to welcome you to the channel and thank you for subscribing!! i love old SK tools, thanks for sharing that!!! stay tuned, lots of giveaways on this channel!!
I knew it!!! Thats exactly what i was thinking when you started running down the long list of ratchets. They are some of my favorites too. I actually have all 3 versions of those ktc roto head ratchets. Also, I figured out how to adjust the spring in those ratchets. You can actually adjust the back drag to less or more depending on your personal preference. The back drag on my ktc ratchets are koken level smooth now!! They weren't bad before, just a little stiffer than I'd like. It also applies to the icon roto head ratchet, the Carlyle, the olsa tools, the matco, and any other roto head ratchet with the same internal spring design, which is about 85% of roto head ratchets.
@JohnCorbet-w4g yes, it involves bending/adjusting the spring. The tip of the spring, where each side comes together at a kind of a tip, that's the part you want to stretch just a tiny tiny little bit. The little part that the peg on the underside of the backing is supposed to slip into when reassembling the ratchet. What I do is take the spring out and hold the back end in some needle nose pliers. The 2 little pronged rear portion of the spring that slips into the small hole in the pawl. Hold those 2 little prongs with some needle nose pliers and grab another pair of needle nose pliers, then gently squeeze on the outer fat rounded parts on either side of the spring. The goal is to compress it ever so slightly with just enough pressure to bring the outer parts in and the tip out like 0.5mm. I mean just enough pressure to bring the 2 fat parts in and the tipout ever so slightly. If you over do it, you can reverse the bend by taking the pliers and ever so gently press the opposite way to bring the tip back in and make the outside sides fat again. I hope that makes sense. It's obviously much easier to illustrate with photos or a video. If you want, I can send you some photos or a video if you send me your info. 2 of the 3 ktc roto head ratchets I received were pretty smooth out of the box, but could still use some adjustment, as they weren't quite as smooth as I would have liked. One of them was definitely a little rough, so I obviously adjusted that one too. I've done this to so many roto head ratchets that use the same internal design, which happens to be most of the roto head ratchets on the market lol. Good luck! Let me know if you need anything!
@victorhoyt4352 thanks. Good breakdown. I've played around with this technique and ruined a few and don't know where you can buy those springs. Then I've got them to have very low backdrag only to notice a delay in engagement while ratcheting back. On my Icon rotohead I've learned to deal with the loud mechanism because it makes it very strong with no slipping. I've put cheater bars and pounded on it with hammers and its very strong.
@@JohnCorbet-w4g That's one of the reasons I love roto head ratchets so much. They are extremely strong, sturdy ratchets. When ratcheting at angle, the fulcrum point is always centered on the head of the ratchet no matter the angle, so the torque is always where it should be, which I also love. I love the versatility of roto head ratchets, which is why they are my favorite to use. Finding a decent one with good back drag is nearly impossible though, which is why I love the ktc roto head ratchets so much. The snap on is good too, but the back drag is still a little stiff. My ktc was better than the snap on out of the box, but after adjusting the spring, it's nearly as good as my koken ratchets.
Jeff, I thought I had enough ratchets but when I started watching your channel I changed my mind. See the trouble you've caused! Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂
Metal handle ratchets are my favorites! They just all around good for all situations!! I will have to get a roto head ratchet I don’t own one!! Enjoyed Jeff!!! Thanks for sharing
I like flex heads but have recently started to think that rotohead is a little more "universal" as it is easier to spin or use as a nut or screw "driver". I'd love to see a video or rotohead vs Flexhead and advantages of each (I do like the looks of the flexhead better, but that is sort of trivial)
Very interesting choice. I don't have anywhere near as many ratchets as you but I have all 3 sizes of this one; I thought they were beautiful and had to have them.
Hey Jeff, love your videos. Here's a video idea. The scenario is you're going on a 6 month road trip in the Chevelle and you are allowed to take one 12" or 15" tool bag of tools with you. What do you toss in the bag?
Mine would be USA Craftsman. I just used mine yesterday. I have at least ten Craftsman tool sets, and I always seem to go to my 1990 era Tri-Wing Craftsmans.
The BEST tool reviews are always the what do you really use tool video's. I just watched a video for woodworking clamps and they had a real cabinet shop with every clamp you could image and they said the Dubuques are the ones they pretty much always go to.
Hello again, Jeff Thank you for another Great Video 👍 Nice choice, Jeff. Until I bought the Harbor Freight Roto Head Ratchets, I have never used a comfort grip ratchet. You have said it many times. You use what feels good in your hands. I just never thought that way before. Again thank you 👌
Hi george i always said and thought that way about tools!! i have some ratchets that work just fine, but i never use because they just dont fit and feel good in my hand!! that wera ratchet that way for me,wierd shape and feel!!!
Thats the right length KTC roto there Jeff. I have the long one and i used mine yesterday putting a starter on a John Deere. I didn't break it but I did flex it pretty hard. Just remember guys the long handle KTC is for Reach not leverage! The one Jeff has there will keep you from busting it. I've got the Milwaukee rotohead that I'm going to start testing next because it has the same size head as the KTC
@@tannerwest6823remember if you ever warranty that ratchet they will send you the entire socket set with case as that ratchet set only has one part number. My set that i bought from ebay was metric and when i warrantied the ratchet i found out that my ratchet was from the sae set. So now i have the sae and metric set
@ oh wow that’s awesome to know! And cool deal on having both metric and SAE sets now. I bought my set off a guy on Facebook marketplace for 30 bucks brand new. It was the SAE set. The only problem is that it was missing the extension which I was totally fine with at that price. But I guess he felt bad about it and threw in 4 brand new Proto 3/8” metric sockets. 10,12,14,15. I was honestly just as excited about those as the Milwaukee set. I’ve never had any Proto sockets but they are very nice.
The Carlyle 90 tooth and locking flex head with quick release ratchets are really great. The locking flex was discontinued for a newer version which can be left unlocked but has a much bigger head. I’ve got the longer version of that KTC rotohead. Haven’t really used it in two years of owning it. Always use my Snap On I’ve had for years, which replaced a Gearwrench, which looks almost identical to the Snap On, that I bought at the last Sears in my area before it closed. Memories. Guess I need to put KTC in the game!
Great video. Don't know how you picked just one with that collection. I'm just over 40 in mine and it would be tough for me to pick one 😂 Anyway, once again you've shown me a ratchet I wasn't aware of (man, i love this channel) so I'll be checking out the KTC rotohead now! 👍Thanks for the great content, keep up the good work.
I'd pick a simple 1/4" drive ratchet because sometimes it's the only tool that gets into places. Ratcheting box ends, impacts, and breaker bars can do a lot in place of 3/8 and 1/2 drive. You could really cheat the question if torque wrenches don't count.

3/8" drive is no surprise, but I was surprised you opted for a roto-head ratchet, I thought it would be a locking flex-head for sure. Glad to see that Carlyle that I also own as your second choice!
This probably took jeff the most time out of any of his videos. He really had to think! I like the pick, certainly would be 3/8! I didnt expect a rotary head but makes sense!
I think you might have an addiction issue there, my friend. HAHA. ...or maybe I'm just jealous? That's probably it, you've got a killer collection there.
The KTC is a great choice. Compact head with swivel and a workable length. I was always a minimalist when it came to ratchets and had about 6 for many yeas. My current collection is around 30. Out of all those ratchets if I had to choose one 3/8 it would be my Duralast flex head. The mechanism is pretty smooth with a narrow head. The flex joint has a nice tight detent. Overall length is 9 inches. I'm thinking about buying a second one and attaching a hard plastic screwdriver handle for a better grip.
Interesting choice. I don't think I would make the same though, I would prefer a standard 3/8" drive for it's strength. I've had my Snap-on since 1978 and it looks like it will last the rest of my life. I've been using it for nearly fifty years and I've only rebuilt it twice both times because of abuse (shouldn't use a ratchet that small to break loose lug nuts or other large bolts, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do) (and I can still purchase rebuild kits for it). I like to think with enough drive accessories, wobbles, universals, flex sockets, or crows feet I could work around the lack of flexibility in my choice of ratchet.
Nice. I have a 3/8" Tone that is similar small rotohead locking. Chrome but the handle is a thick and a matte finish. Wish it were knurled to make it a bit more usable as a driver (especially since it is a locking rotohead, which makes it easier to actually use on a regular basis as a driver, vs emergency situation. I'm not a fan of using the rotohead as a driver on a regular basis unless it locks, flops around too much for me. OK in emergency or in a travel kit) Just looked and the Tone is now almost $50, I paid $35 a few months ago. I also have a power built that has a the smaller 3/8" head like this KTC but doesn't have the knurling and those are pretty cheap, around $10.
Hi Mike welcome to the channel!! yea that box is very heavy, the middle section, top and bottem are 1400 pounds, empty!! each end boxes are 800 ×2 1600pds 3000 pds total weight!! EMPTY!!!!
@JohnCorbet-w4g just buy the replacement kit. Ko-ken's warranty is non existent. Have you tried reading their warranty section? It's like a lawyer wrote that. Basically it says, use it responsibly, don't go crazy on it, not a weapon lol. The only reason to buy it straight on their website or any other authorized dealer is for their lifetime warranty. EVEN then their lifetime warranty is near impossible to redeem. The Japanese don't believe in lifetime warranties. They don't go crazy on their tools like the Americans. Personally I would find the cheapest place to buy a ko-ken and buy a replacement kit to repair it. I opened mine up, and it's super simple to replace it. Not a whole lot of moving parts in it.
@@PrecursorYangvery true. And I'm not saying Koken isn't the best there is. They are absolutely fabulous. I hope i never have to be without my Koken tools. However the question was IF you could only have 1 ratchet. So i would pick one that is very versatile but with a easy quick warranty because - remember- you only have 1. So you have to be able to replace it quickly when or if u break it as you will be using it for everything
But if we can only have one with extra rebuild kits yeah it would probably be Koken. I see Jeffs point too so i would choose the Koken Roto with unlimited rebuild kits 👍
Ratchets are not like the children that we love the same or have a favorite. It is possible to have favorite ratchets. 😁 Thanks, Jeff! That roto head is a nice choice.

I thought you would go the flexhead 3/8" Carlyle..I can see why the KTC (Kyoto Tool Company) takes it but the Carlyle wouldn't disappoint
Hello boosted it was difficult choice!!! Carliyle was rite thier!!!
I thought you were going to pick the tone. Ktc is nice.
Hi ryan this was a tuff one!!
Well boys you know it’s a serious tool box when you got that much weight with the drawers open
Hi Mike welcome to the channel!! yea that box is very heavy, the middle section, top and bottem are 1400 pounds, empty!! each end boxes are 800 ×2 1600pds 3000 pds total weight!! EMPTY!!!!
I would have chosen a 90 tooth 3/8 flex head gearwrench ratchet.
Thats another good one my friend!! thank you for joining in!!!
#1Koken swivel head. #2 Gearwrench loking flex confort grip. #3 Matco flex locking comfort grip.
All good choices mandapalque!! thanks for sharing!!!
For me its the Ko-ken 3/8 z-series.
My favorite as well. I only have the 1 so far, but it's the smoothest, most enjoyable ratchet to use that I have.
I love the Kokens too. But if "you can only have one" replacement will be a painfully long process
Wow It Can't Be Too Small And It Can't Be Too Big Thats What She Said Right So I The Gear Wrench 120 XP Thats All For Me 😂😂😂😂😂🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thats a good choice you picked!! thanks rivera!!
I never have had comfort get as bad as a chrome handle.
