Back in my Air Force career, we had Follow Me Trucks. Usually a Ford F150 painted blue guiding planes around the tarmac. Some had the duty of collecting the parachutes from the F4 Phantoms when they deployed them while landing.
The U-2 has two cars also. The pilot chase car and crew car, usually a pickup truck. This truck has the wheels to be reattached for taxi. Very interesting to watch the pilot “balance” the wings if there is a hard enough wind while the crew is reattaching the wheels. Great video!
I’ve deviated from aerospace content heavily recently due to me getting my drivers license, so it’s always nice to get back into the flow when automotive content and aerospace content combine!
I'm a pilot based in Poland flying the 737-800 and every airport I operate in (Katowice, Krakow, Gdansk, Warsaw Modlin, Lodz, Wroclaw, Rzeszow and Poznan) have the follow me service mandatory for all arriving aircraft and some of the airports have the service mandatory for departing aircraft too e.g. Krakow and Rzeszow
I’ve bin in the Lambo, also as a Passenger. they get a new one every summer.. I’m an aircraft mechanic, and have been a lot in “Motor Valley” Bologna 😍
In the early '90s I got a ride in a U2 chase car during a landing... Cool AF! There was also a CUCV M1008 (Ten-O-Eight) behind with the wing gear in the back and two crew who tried to get the gear into the wings before it rolled onto a wingtip. (The 1008 was a Chevrolet pick-up and the forerunner of the HMMWV (Humvee))
I've provided a follow me service a few times. I was an airport reporting officer and works safety officer for a small regional airport (YWSL). We were under going mager upgrades and some taxiways were closed. While the nearby military base provided air traffic control for the area, my airport has no tower and as such there is no ground control. Enter the pilots who got a little lost and my plain white utility vehicle with only amber beacon lights and a radio to guide them to their parking. Not a service normally operated at such a small airport, but necessary at the time due to contruction works which I was supervising.
Once friends flew into my homebase after the airport was closed, and I drove my E-class in front of them taking them to the designated parking that was arranged. Had my emergency flashlight on. It felt awesome.
I use these in FSX Steam Edition, and they’re very helpful. Other times I’m having to look at an airport diagram I pulled up on my iPad, which can be a bit time consuming and a bit frustrating at times, especially in X-plane 11 and MSFS. 8:02 Or worse, cause a plane to crash after takeoff. Much like what happened to Air France 4590.
Yeah, that part about Dusseldorf is so true, I've been numerous times on the observation deck there and was often surprised and wondering why on earth is everybody leaded by the follow me car, wasn't that a feat from the 90's?)) Other aiports seemed to pretty much keep the service only for the lost crews since.. I thoght
This is so cool! Even if your a experienced pilot! hell, if you focus on landing safely, you may not even know taxiway out of how many 0.o.(that chart is insane 0.o) .. So yaa this is such a cool feature for safety and helping new or even, stressed out pilots, idk. it's cool! and makes things easier and safer.. and well they are safe , they will know the layout better in the future! And i hope no matter what skill level, i hope pilots will not be hesitant regardless, they are to help no matter what! this is soo neeeeat!!
I'm very happy to hear that electric vehicles are being used more these days. I guess in Germany it will more likely be a VW or Audi rather than Tesla for the follow me. But it will be cool to see any of these next time I fly!

After the first Q400 in that crowded line of planes, it isn't an A320. Maybe some embraer (idk the spelling) becuase the size is smaller and engines are also small as compared to a320. But good job compiling!
At the other end of the scale, some very small airports also use Follow Me vehicles. I remember flying as a tourist into Split back when that town was in Yugoslavia. The follow me was an ancient looking pickup truck very different from that Italian supercar ;) . In the case of Split it was because they had minimal ground radar and minimal signage round the airport, so every arrival was met and guided to it's parking spot where stairs and buses waited to transfer us to the terminal. The "follow me" sign was much bigger and much lower tech than on the supercar: so that being the most important single thing I would actually rate the (then) Split vehicle as more for for purpose than the Lamborghini
Another GREAT video C.J. THANK YOU !!! What a simple yet BRILLIANT idea !! Maybe a system like this could have prevented the carnage at Tenerife ?? (I know...both aircraft were outbound, however ground traffic confusion is still a cause of "incidents") This service should be available to all aircraft at EVERY major airport. (In my humble opinion)
No public business in their right mind is going to run a supercar with super maintenance costs as a fleet vehicle unless it's subsidized by the manufacturer I would think.
I'll never forget landing at Cambridge as a private pilot in a PA28 181 in such bad weather that I couldn't see anything at all outside the immediate area of the runway after coming to a stop. That was after quite a long hold as well. Hard work. Could have done with a car then.
If I remember correctly, follow me pick-up trucks in Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand are in plain air force blue, since they are RTAF own vehicles.
I'd never heard of or seen such vehicles, however the instant it was described it kind of had that typical "oh, that just makes sense then" that a lot of aspects of aviation have. I have found myself behind standard airport vehicles in the past though - as the coffee delivery guy! First time on a taxiway in a Ford Transit is an interesting experience!
In the early 1990's my son and I plus a group of Air Cadets toured Toronto's Pearson International Airport. The airport duty manager was giving us the tour and at one point I was following him in our car as he was driving his "Follow Me" vehicle. During this tour, and to my surprise, an Air France 747 was closely following us. My son and another Air Cadet were going nuts hanging out the windows watching this aircraft towering over us. He was only about 20 meters behind us. I found out a few minutes later that the crew were lost and the duty manager was guiding them to the gate. It's an experience we will never forget.
Not a pilot, but just love the thought, science and logic that goes behind each and every aspect of air travel. Re-ensures us being the superior beings...
imagine you have to go back to V1 speed just to follow that lamborghini

Soo good of him in such a cold weather he went to make a video just for our knowledge
I’ve deviated from aerospace content heavily recently due to me getting my drivers license, so it’s always nice to get back into the flow when automotive content and aerospace content combine!
The Legend is back guyz!
I grew up in Bologna, Italy and saw the Lamborghini Follow me car sooooo many times. Absolute beauty it is.😍
I’ve bin in the Lambo, also as a Passenger. they get a new one every summer.. I’m an aircraft mechanic, and have been a lot in “Motor Valley” Bologna 😍
Capt. Joe teaches me all the things that Flight School teaches me within 8 years. I’d love to fly with you once I become a pilot ❤️

Good one Joe, but would you PLEASE do a video on the parking systems used at big airports to help the pilots align with the terminals and jetways!
Ready and going online soon
@@flywithcaptainjoe Brilliant!
Follow Me car: "Follow Me"
Pilots: "I think this car has a questline for us"
hah
The footage is 6:28 is seriously an eye opener! What a video! Just wow!
ermm, Joe, the U2 is still flying to this day...
Indeed it is! I watch it flying missions out of the UK every day
Was looking for this comment. Up with this!
Yes not only i who noticed this..
@Thomas Jefferson Maybe he meant “since”.
Chief. Flew air o r Concorde to gun fky by 400 knots
I thoght
dude I live in Bologna... I'm glad you appreciate our "follow me" car ahah
Also same follow me car has transponders, like aircrafts.
You can use flightradar24.com to observe the movements of ground vehicles at some airports.
One of the best videos you’ve put out in a while - nicely done! The in-the-field stuff is so cool!
I'm very happy to hear that electric vehicles are being used more these days. I guess in Germany it will more likely be a VW or Audi rather than Tesla for the follow me. But it will be cool to see any of these next time I fly!
Yes Italy. Prole hybrier eltrrc farri lamghini
[4:31] Nothing like a quick game of table-tennis to unwind after a stressful flight and a taxiing error.

If i missed any reply plz.
After the first Q400 in that crowded line of planes, it isn't an A320. Maybe some embraer (idk the spelling) becuase the size is smaller and engines are also small as compared to a320. But good job compiling!
7:18: Airbus h120 helicopter (not a plane but I just wanted to mention)

Me: 👏🏻
I love your pfp
Haha that happened to me too
Ah, what I did not miss since I opted for RUclips Premium...
You know the Follow Me car is a supercar when you hear the driver say "V1, rotate"
Another GREAT video C.J. THANK YOU !!! What a simple yet BRILLIANT idea !! Maybe a system like this could have prevented the carnage at Tenerife ?? (I know...both aircraft were outbound, however ground traffic confusion is still a cause of "incidents")
This service should be available to all aircraft at EVERY major airport. (In my humble opinion)
Love the Lambo as a follow me car. Wonder if Lamborghini sponsored it...
with out looking in to it. I can see them doing that. A good advertisement.
The driver may be tempted to use the runway to thy to take of them selves.
No public business in their right mind is going to run a supercar with super maintenance costs as a fleet vehicle unless it's subsidized by the manufacturer I would think.
it's done by Lamboirghini itself (using pre series and mules) as an ad stunt.
I'll never forget landing at Cambridge as a private pilot in a PA28 181 in such bad weather that I couldn't see anything at all outside the immediate area of the runway after coming to a stop. That was after quite a long hold as well. Hard work. Could have done with a car then.
And when the week needed him most, he returned
Hi Joe, the airport shown at 8:12 is DUS (EDDL) Rwy 05R/23L, my former employer. Greetings from Seattle and many Happy Landings.
Stuttgart Region is my Homebase as well.

As a passenger in a Cessna 172 it’s a Great experience to be behind a follow me car
Sir your videos give me inspiration to follow my passion and be a good pilot in the future 😉... Thank you so much ❤️ lots of love from india ❤️🥰🙏
If I remember correctly, follow me pick-up trucks in Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand are in plain air force blue, since they are RTAF own vehicles.
Yet another awesome video! My weekly dose of Captain Joe is here 🙂
I'd never heard of or seen such vehicles, however the instant it was described it kind of had that typical "oh, that just makes sense then" that a lot of aspects of aviation have. I have found myself behind standard airport vehicles in the past though - as the coffee delivery guy! First time on a taxiway in a Ford Transit is an interesting experience!
Ektric transt beter short time shir range slow sped.
When you are early legend has it he will like your comment.
He did!
Captain Joe you absolute madman 🤙🏻

In the early 1990's my son and I plus a group of Air Cadets toured Toronto's Pearson International Airport. The airport duty manager was giving us the tour and at one point I was following him in our car as he was driving his "Follow Me" vehicle. During this tour, and to my surprise, an Air France 747 was closely following us. My son and another Air Cadet were going nuts hanging out the windows watching this aircraft towering over us. He was only about 20 meters behind us. I found out a few minutes later that the crew were lost and the duty manager was guiding them to the gate. It's an experience we will never forget.
You made this entire video so you could do that "speaking of following..." segue at the end, didn't you.
Not a pilot, but just love the thought, science and logic that goes behind each and every aspect of air travel. Re-ensures us being the superior beings...
I've lived in the US my whole life and never heard of this, also worked as a baggage handler at Delta in my early 20s I'm 32 now
I really love this channel!!! From Nigeria
ORD could use these especially since the layout is always changing
In Friedrichshaven we were received by something like a pimped quad for the followme. Was kinda fitting as we arrived in a Piper Arrow not a big jet.
