Something bocchi excels at, and does with its comedy and growth moments, is how they know perfectly how to frame a scene, from angles, shading, placement and use of objects and situations as symbolisms that add further depth to the characters, and does it really organically with Bocchi anxiety playing a factor, for example, a detail they've done since ep 4 to now so far, is giving different outfits each of those episodes to the members EXCEPT bocchi who remains in her tracksuit, it shows how she is not comfortable yet with showing herself more, is this type of details that add to the narrative and storytelling, then you have the absolute freedom of ideas the staff comes with for each gag in each episode, where in one is use of imagery and perspectives, then other episode you get a lot of real life cuts and use of props, stretch and squatch used to its maximum, and so on, yet still is able to transition from a heartfelt moment into a funny one or viceversa, but like seriously, how do you even get the idea of going pixel art for a moment like in ep 6? or the dam showcases as a so hilarious censorship after whats a hell of a music performance
as of note, for anyone wondering, the music performance on ep 5 was done in a really interesting process, the staff had people perform, play the instruments nad all, rotoscoped that into cgi, and then redid it all hand drawn, that may sound too roundabout but man it really gave us a hell of an amazing character acting in nice sakuga, like details from Ryo sliding into "air", nijika using her eyes to communicate with ryo or keeping tempo with her feet, kita focus when looking or also bocchi herself

A small thing that this show does that I like is that they gave the main characters huge wardrobe. You could easily tell the who the character is by the way they dress from their school uniform to their casual clothes.
Except bocchi who wears only tracksuit or tracksuit with skirt.

So, I haven't heard of this anime on the first few weeks that was airing. Mainly because it was buried on people talking about the big shows this season. Miraculously, a found a post on Twitter about this anime and decided to give it a shot.
It quickly became one of my favorite animated shows of all time (based on 8eps as of airing). I'm so glad I found this gem.

This is all indirect info, but the Creator is a huge fan of the Japanese Band, "Asian Kung-Fu Generation". The band is based on those members to a degree. And another indirect fan Lore of that as well, AKFG were really inspired by the American Rock Band "Weezer" from back in the day. The band would cover their music and model a lot of their music off of Weezers. If you listen to both bands music, especially earlier works, you can hear a similar Vocal styles of Gotoh's (Lead Singer/Riff Guitarist of AKFG) and River's (Weezer), as well as similar Guitar/Bass work as well. The only thing that separates sonically from both bands, in my opinion, is the drum style. Kiyoshi Ijichi's drumming is really metal/jazz based and is just really sonically... KICK ASS! And the Guitar Solo's in AKFG is really bad ass as well lol! Anyway lol, sorry for the rant man, the Roots of this Anime are tied to Asian Kung-Fu Generation.

Only problem i have with this kind of anime is that amature bands sound way to perfect on their first concerts. Ive seen and heard so many of them in real life and some of them can good but not this profesional lvl good. They could add a bit more realism in this aspect. Else great show and fun to watch.

The band is actually meant to be two pros (Bocchi and Ryo), one semi-pro (Nijika), and one amateur. Ryo was in a pro band until last year but left after it sold out, while Bocchi has more subs than this channel. Nijika actually understands the industry better than anyone else and her sister used to be a pro. Only Kita is really an amateur.

Bocchi the Rock is okay but if there's one series about all-female rock bands that I could recommend that would be BanG Dream. The franchise has been around for 7 years now not only it has 7 bands in total but the 4 main bands Poppin'Party, Roselia, RAISE A SUILEN and Morfonica has real-life counterparts their seiyuus are accomplished musicians.

I went into this anime expecting to vibe with it and honestly... didn't.
And I say this as someone who as some social anxiety.
Idk maybe my issue is simply only having "some" rather than an extreme case, but to me, I think the problem is that it just felt like "Social Anxiety, the anime" and Bocchi just felt like "Social Anxiety, the character."
I didn't really get a sense of who Bocchi is because everything about her character just felt like it could be summed up with "Sad, lonely, guitar otaku with social anxiety."
Sad and lonely are emotions or states of mind, but not personality traits, and Social Anxiety is not a personality either. It's a behavioral trait which makes someone too anxious to show their personality.
That's what I felt like I was missing. I was missing Bocchi's true personality. Her spirit. Her soul. And I get that she wouldn't show it outside or with others, but I feel like even at home there wasn't a sense of who she is.
And I don't really consider her an introvert. Ryo is an introvert: someone who's true personality is of a quiet person who is perfectly comfortable being quiet and even flat out rudely antisocial, unashamedly. There was never a sense that she was too nervous to show her true self, but that she was just being herself.
Because of this, whenever Bocchi was shown trying to improve herself or overcome her anxiety, I wasn't really sure what truer, hidden, self was trying to come forth.
As in, I'm honestly not sure who she'd be without the social anxiety. I don't know how she'd carry herself, what her hobbies would be other than music and sleeping, what she'd eat, how she'd eat, or how she'd interact with others, etc. And I think that's a problem from a writing standpoint. They've never talked about something like the weather or their favorite genres of movies in the show, but I could honestly take decent guesses at those things with each of the other three main girls. With Bocchi tho, I honestly don't have a clue.
Idk maybe her inner self was teased in the scene where she was trying to come up with lyrics and she imagined herself as a party person, but it's hard to tell because the anime showed her imagine herself as like 4-5 different things, some of them from different time periods. It doesn't help that I can't even characterize her off of fashion choice because it is literally a one-note pink tracksuit that matches her hair.
What do I make of it? That she's a girl..? Cuz it's.. pink..?
And she wears it ALL. THE. TIME. At home and outdoors everyday at any time of day.
So maybe the point is she's honestly not sure who she is either, which is totally fine for a coming of age story. But even if that's the case, I feel like the question doesn't get addressed in the anime enough, so I wonder if the storytellers actually know who she is without the anxiety either.
The question driving her journey should not just be "Will she overcome her social anxiety?" but also "Who is she underneath?" and "Will she find out?"
I probs think about this sort of thing more than most people to begin with, but I believe it's all valid, especially because the story has elements of narrative character arc and drama rather than only being a flat out comedy. So good character development is necessary. So whether the character is conscious of it or not, it should feel like they are becoming something and not simply un-becoming who they are. Not just losing her anxiety, but actually revealing her true self.
This all my opinion anyway. Not like I need others to agree with it. If you like it then cool.

    • @Enforcedcraft
      @Enforcedcraft Год назад

Yup definently I agree with you. To me and you and others can go haywire but as I said that trope of here is new girl, oh let's just put new girl to like and be amazed by Ryo whatever she does, kinda like in Komi where everyvone Oversimps for one character in Komi's case Main character herself here a supporting like Ryo. It honestly didn't need that thing. It is a comedy and Music(much dissapointed about music). Comedy part it had good things up to EP 4 and read ahead a bit in Manga and just like you can see it's a bit wrong writing in some sense.
But yeah Mangaka and Studio didn't really get to us that character building moment. It was just a bit going "Oh she is nervous and kinda a bit Autistic from time to time(not the medical term but urban slang) with her just nervousness and such.
K-ON as you said has a LOT of character building plus music was fuckin fire. Both OP and ED.

    • @winsonzhu4427
      @winsonzhu4427 Год назад +2

I think I kinda understand what you're getting at, (she feels a bit too centered on her social anxiety as a character, with the other notable thing about her being Guitar) though I do disagree more generally.
"I'm honestly not sure who she'd be without the social anxiety. I don't know how she'd carry herself, what her hobbies would be other than music and sleeping, what she'd eat, how she'd eat, or how she'd interact with others, etc. And I think that's a problem from a writing standpoint."
Agreed, except for that last bit. There obviously can't be a way to know - based on the opening, that's how she's just always been. Early on she never had to break out of her shell and so she just never did - there was no major inflection point to her becoming who she is, making imagining who she would be otherwise, pointless. But I don't see that as problematic, because I don't see her as the borderline non-entity she's made out to be in the rest of the comment.
"They've never talked about something like the weather or their favorite genres of movies in the show, but I could honestly take decent guesses at those things with each of the other three main girls. With Bocchi tho, I honestly don't have a clue.
Quite frankly it's kinda obvious, with her "seisyun complex" and inner monologue when she was trying to write down lyrics. I picture her hating those same kinds of sappy, upbeat, status-quo affirming movies as she does songs, and preferring movies (and media in general) that explore structural and emotional things that the "normies" don't very much like to think too much about. You ever see a piece of media where people on twitter will talk about it in reference to real world issues, and there will be others just going "It's not that deep bro"? *That* kind of movie - and I don't even watch movies myself! Her preferred weather is all but stated to be rain based on Verse 2 of "Seisyun Complex", the OP. In that sense, her preferences feel more clear to me than with the other characters, because it's really much more explicit.
Heck, her having her more implicit traits being shown through the Kessoku band lyrics she wrote feels very *in character*, and so do said lyrics. Her feeling of being left behind by life, fears for the future, desperation to get her voice out somehow despite how she is, lack of faith in fate, self-deprecation, how the seasons flew by during her routine in middle-school, disdain for the status quo, how dazzling she sees her bandmates, fantasies and hopes of success, wishes to leave her mark, etc. can be taken from lyrics translations of the original songs of the Kessoku Band album, and to a lesser extent to the subtitled lyrics given in the show itself.
"So maybe the point is she's honestly not sure who she is either, which is totally fine for a coming of age story. But even if that's the case, I feel like the question doesn't get addressed in the anime enough, so I wonder if the storytellers actually know who she is without the anxiety either.
The question driving her journey should not just be "Will she overcome her social anxiety?" but also "Who is she underneath?" and "Will she find out?""
And that's why these lines fall flat for me, because she does have a character. While her traits largely stem from her anxiety, both socially and otherwise, those traits aren't definitively tied to anxiety, and don't go away with anxiety. It's not like she doesn't change personally, outside of social anxiety, either. Her goal shifting to be more for the band than just herself is a big one, imo. Her worldview and source for the anxiety she has doesn't change, but how she works within those confines does.
