Morning boys... I know if you don't know the answer to this Mads then Andy definitely will. You have a "gap" inbetween the joining fibreglass sheets you're laying on the deck which doesn't have any strands connecting them. Is this not a weak point or will the next layer of FG cross over and provide enough strength? I hope that makes sense. Mads, I don't know where you find the time to do these vids when you are so pressured for time to get the glassing done... you're a star!
Mads, I vote you as the nicest person on youtube. ;-) Always positive and thankful for your friends and others such as the person who lent you then shed for the summer. Enjoying your videos, learning a lot, and looking forward to that day that you slip Athena into the water. Stay warm.
*Jack Daniels* That's the problem, woman in general don't like nice guys, they want a man and hence Denmark has a population growth of 0.8 that means total destruction of the Denmark people within a few short years. You will only see none white Muslims.
esther19741974 That's not entirely sure of by any guess. The problem with your theory is this. Aggressive males do not cooperate in a group well together. Your premise would require group effort. For example I point out the Middle East. They can't get their act together over there and have not been able to for 1000's of years. The place is a shit hole. The ME is still in the Stone Age. They are in control there aren't they? Second your theory would require that a class of the poorest people on Earth rise together and assume control. Again this has only happened rarely like next to never. Third for your hypothesis, I consider myself to be a gentleman, and have never had a shortage of women. I have 7 children all Happy wealthy and genteel, no Muslims either. Have a nice day.
ClareMacC. Whom is talking politics? The first comment in this thread is telling Mads he is a very nice guy which I agree with. The second comment by Jack Daniels is a insult to Mads. It questions his virility, which I find asinine and suggests Muslims will take over Denmark, which is astounding stupidity. I don't think virility or secularism are politics.
Your projects get more elaborate every week, just another example that anyone can do anything if you put your mind to it. Great job mads can’t wait for you to finally move aboard.
Holy heck the tension is killing me! I can't take these cliffhangers! I am so excited to see this project keep moving on great great great job. Love it
I feel quite guilty about distracting you from your 'Mission Athena' by adding yet another comment to your long list of admiring followers. The fact is we are all in awe of your tenacity and determination to get 'her Fixed and Floating'. You truly deserve to have some 'great times with her' in the future. I'm sure it's that which drives you on and the great thing is, we've all (i.e. well over a 3rd Million of us) have been able to watch, appreciate and share in your successes. Truly well done Mads and best of luck with the move.
I was so engrossed in watching yet another fantastic video Mads. I look forward to watching your weekly videos and seeing the great work you are putting into Athena. I am sure she will be a much stronger yacht from all the effort you have put into her. Great work and thank you for sharing her journey. Cheers Jerome
I once was working aboard a commercial dive vessel in the Gulf of Mexico as a helmet diver on a long summer job for various oil companies. It was the type of job that dive companies salivate for, with no less than 7 locations with a multitude of tasks and tons of equipment added to the boat, including a deck added to the stern of the vessel with a 20' shipping container converted into living quarters for the junior members of the crew added about 12' above the working deck just behind one of 4 heavy anchor winches (this was a 185' 4 point anchor vessel with an A-frame on the back for lifting with an air tugger instead of a crane, cutting edfe tech for the 1960s, but this was 2005). It took about 2 weeks to add all the equipment for the 7 week job, and we went offshore for a week, then had to make one of several trips to the dock for weather and resupply. We went into the Port of Freshwater City Louisiana, and the second day there the US Coast Guard boarded us and since nobody asked for ID they did a shakedown inspection, and behold, the company had not got any kind of engineering ok for the modifications, and ordered us to remove all the elevated modifications that they alleged would make the stability of the vessel dangerous..... It added an extra week to the job, but luckily the story ended with us getting an extra week of pay instead of being washed off the boat in the dark of a stormy night to drown in a shipping container as we plummeted toward our watery grave on the seafloor. This is on the extreme end of how some modifications can cause unforeseen negative consequences, and there is a reason we have nautical engineers, inspectors, and agents of the govt charged with not only rescue but also enforcement of regulations.....and always remember to keep your eyes open, as we are responsible for our own safety and corperations have, and continue to put profits above all else.....it can also apply to personal watercraft in using approved products correctly according to its directions, and always getting expert opinions when making any modifications as one might not realize when they are effecting the safety of their vessel. Good sailing, stay safe
GEE, it's lucky Mads loves sanding so much. Actually, it is good for him to know every inch of the boat so well. It will give him confidence about what is really below him as he gets into a bit of heavy seas, later.
Mats, in all honesty: with all the work you put in Athena...I hope the previous owner payed you a lot to take the boat with you to Denmark. Seriously, all the work, time and money you put in it, man I do admire you!! And I have to say: as I am refitting a Halcyon 27, I learned a lot from you and from Andy from boatworks today!! All my respects to both of you!
Great episode Mads. Your friends helped out so much Sunday, and it is nice to be able to meet that deadline from the generous shed owner for sure. Keep it up! Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan
Well worth the extra day wait, you're doing a fine job on this boat, and by the looks of the deck / cockpit gaps you found and fixed you'll have a boat perhaps better than new. Well done
Absolutely well done Mads on getting you're deck rebuild done. Glassing it will be relatively straightforward in comparison to all the work that you had to figure out how to do and actually complete it. I am sure when you started in it, it could have felt daunting but your enthusiasm seems to know no boundaries. Athena will be one tough and well rebuilt boat once finished. A credit to you.
Glad to see this step went well and excited that you ore now closing in the deck. The deck replacement had to be the most stressful and intense job on your list I am thinking.
Hi! I’ve been catching up with your videos for the past week. Your work ethic is incredible. I don’t know what your day gig is but it is clear you are the type of person that would be successful at what ever you do.
Discovering and remedying the gap around the cockpit has been a highlight of this series. It has probably given one or two production boat owners a sleepless night. It is goddamn nightmarish. But hey, the rotten plywood was goddamn nightmarish too.
I just bought a 1976 Ericson that's been neglected and needs work. Lots of work! Whenever I start feeling overwhelmed I think of what you're doing, and it no longer seems that bad LOL! Two big projects I'm faced with, fixing SEVERAL leaks and rewiring the whole boat. I'm thinking about starting my own series on it and could use some advice from a pro. Great work so far Mads!! Love it!
When stored outside will the yard allow you to build a temp shelter over Athena? Its amazing what you can do with thin strips of wood laminated with regular wood glue, stainless staples, and tarps/shrink wrap... I get the impression that is what your surprise will be and its a great topic for a DIY channel.
Hi Mads I'm fairly new to your channel and just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the content and love seeing the progress of Athena. She'll be a masterpiece when complete. Great work
Many thanks from the peanut gallery to your helpers, as well as the shed owner. We owe them a debt for helping our intrepid (And oh-so-spiffy!) friend!
Thanks for the videos and ideas. Always handy to see how someone else tackles the tasks. I bought the "Boat Owners Mechanical and Electrical Manual" after you mentioned it in a video. A really worthwhile purchase thank you!
"Jesus, it's time consuming to fix up an old boat..." that comment really made me laugh out loud. You're a man among men, Mads. I don't know anyone with your tenacity or patience level with such a great sense of humor. It is paying off though, your boat is looking really grand!
max x I believe he means building a tent frame on the deck, at the toe rail area. I've seen it done before, and hear it works well if you have a leak you can't fix.
Looking at the bit of plywood you have ahead of the mast step, you could install a self-tacking jib track. With foam core you might even add a raised faring from the cabin forward so the track is recessed or at least placed on the leading edge before the actual deck. Now, since the toe-rails are removed, forward of your jib add a bowsprit to hold a furling Genoa and anchor roller :)
As always thanks for the video and the excitement continues. Will he get an other shed? Will the fiberglass last threw the winter? Stay tuned for the next episode to see how Batman... I mean Mats gets out of this one.
You fully achived "P6" Mads...Prior Planing Prevents Piss Poor Performance. THAT was amazing on the layup....looked like it went pretty smooth. If you can get a shed for the winter...do it. You'll be the better for it. I really wish I could have my boat in an area I can work on it over the winter (I pull my boat at on the 7th of October for the winter...no fun with 2' of ice in the slip so we have to pull them)....I get about 3 weekends only to prep my boat for the next seaons, and a full weekend is sanding and applying bottom paint to the bottom of the hull. :(
So much glass work accomplished in the past few weeks, and it looks great. It's good to have friends willing to help out like yours did. I don't know if this would work, I'm just thinking out loud, but if you can't finish your glass work outside the shed before it gets too cold, suppose you painted over the peel ply with a cheap latex house paint for some temporary UV protection? When it's warm enough and you're ready to complete the job, you pull the peel ply off, the paint goes with it, and you're ready to pick up where you left off. Just a thought.
That was absolutely amazing. I think we might have a core issue wioth our 40 year old Westerly 33 so was looking for info about scale of issue/repair etc. Not sure how much further forward I am but it was great to see your positive attitude. If you ever fancy a trip down to the West Country let me know!!
Mads; I'm sure sorry you had to do all that work replacing the deck; on the upside you sure did a good job of entertaining us as well as learning some new skills. That boat will be twice the boat it was when it rolled out of the factory (remind me never to buy that brand) and you have established a reputation that will serve you well should you ever decide to go into the boat repair business. Good luck and I hope you find a winter storage area when you can work on the boat in comfort.
Mads, please come sail to the Great Lakes around Michigan. I so need to meet you after watching all of this. I just wish I had the temperament for what you're doing...having just completed a brake job on my truck...and having a good 20 minute long rant and panic attack over potentially ruining my ride.
Mads, that looks awesome! I would have to agree, Athena is going to re-enter the water ten times better than when she left her original building facility. And I would say she is going to keep you safe and take you confidently to the ends of the oceans. Well done!! you going to put down some sort of jell-coat to protect the hard work you just did? That's what I'd seriously consider. As always, thanks for sharing!
Usually on Sundays (here in the States) I love when I get a notification for another one of your videos around lunch time. I was slightly disappointed when I saw that yesterdays update video was just an update.... but I've been so excited looking forward to today's video!! :D Congratz on making it to your deadline! It's an awesome series you have going! :)

The 'cliff-hanger' is... Andy is coming for a visit and will lay a teak deck for you?! Haha, in all seriousness it would be great to see two of my favourite channels do a meet up!
Another excellent effort. The result will be a much cleaner appearing boat. I would recommend , as have others, that you work a way to keep Athena covered until you get a final finish on the epoxy. Hope you work out that deal on another indoor spot to continue the work.
Damit, a cliffhanger. Hope the other option comes good Mad's because i suspect it's another Hanger and that be absolutely great for a plethora of reasons. Thumb's up on the work btw👍.
So question , Will he do a fast sealing of the hull for the winter after doing so many vacuum heat treatings to keep water out from even dew in the yard over winter ?
I just finished watching some of your back videos, and I'm curious; Having now almost wrapped up on finishing the deck repairs, and given you didn't expect this level of work, if you could go back in time would you still pick this boat?
Mission accomplished Mads! Looks like everything went very smooth and turned out fantastic ;-) Good luck with the move! ~Cheers
Thanks, Andy! :) And thanks again for all your help :)

Good to hear Andy's voice there. I feel like I know you guys. Both incredibly helpful!
Your craftmanship and patience amaze me.....again and again. Awesome job Mads 👏.
Thank you so much :)
Congratulations on meeting this enormous milestone Mads!

I couldn't be more proud of you if you were my own son! Well done Mads!
Nice! I know that this was stressful but it looks like you've done an awesome job as always. It must be a huge relief now!
Waited all day for this and I wasn't disappointed. A job well done and a nice cliff hanger for the next installation. LIKE and happy.
I'm glad you weren't disappointed :)

Inspirational from start to finish. I can't wait for next week's recap. Great job Mads!

Many thanks from the peanut gallery to your helpers, as well as the shed owner. We owe them a debt for helping our intrepid (And oh-so-spiffy!) friend!
Great job, dang, that is a lot of work. Love watching you figure these things out.
Thanks for the videos and ideas. Always handy to see how someone else tackles the tasks. I bought the "Boat Owners Mechanical and Electrical Manual" after you mentioned it in a video. A really worthwhile purchase thank you!
Great way to start the week
Hehe, thanks :)
Hey mads, thank you for the great clinic on fiberglass and epoxy.
ahh the cliffhanger... what would a youtube video be without that... :) great job Mads!
Enjoy both you and boatworks today
"Jesus, it's time consuming to fix up an old boat..." that comment really made me laugh out loud. You're a man among men, Mads. I don't know anyone with your tenacity or patience level with such a great sense of humor. It is paying off though, your boat is looking really grand!

Omg! This is getting exciting!!!
I think so too! ;) ;)
Whew! Just under the wire. Looking forward to this winter's tasks.
Looks fantastic. Great work as always. I can't tell you how much I love watching your progress! It's very inspiring!!!
I'm anticipating a boat shed project to keep this project going through the winter. I hope so at least.
Nicely done. What a relief to find and fix that cockpit combing joint now rather than later. Gotta wonder what they were thinking.
Its all coming together Mads. Great work.
Thank you for your videos. They are great. I learn a lot watching them. Also I find them very entertaining.
Ha! Love the cliffhanger! Great work on the deck!
Spiffy cliff hanger! Great work!
Great job Mads, you sure love those cliffhangers, don't you?!
Make a frame like a tent for the tarp you are planning on using to cover the boat.
He may have access to a second shed ? I hope
max x I believe he means building a tent frame on the deck, at the toe rail area. I've seen it done before, and hear it works well if you have a leak you can't fix.
Hey mads, thanks for the great five glassing

Great work, as always! I'm excited to see the finished product, Mads!
Congratulations!
Great job and very enjoyable to watch - as always!
I always enjoy and look forward to your videos, Mads.
As always thanks for the video and the excitement continues. Will he get an other shed? Will the fiberglass last threw the winter? Stay tuned for the next episode to see how Batman... I mean Mats gets out of this one.
This week was not the usual "Same Mads time same Mads channel".
Another T-Shirt quote in this episode : "A Quick Bit Of Sanding Never Hurt Anyone".
Pretty dang spiffy is an understatement!
Very nice to have facilities like that free of charge. I don't think I would ever find that in southern california.
Big THUMBSUP buddy ! At least you got an extra 6 days and you should be able to easily get the small amount of the rear deck 'glassed.
Athena's lines matched so perfectly with the dodger that everytime I see it missing I think someone has purchased a new boat. :-)
Amazing work so far!
Mads, please come sail to the Great Lakes around Michigan. I so need to meet you after watching all of this. I just wish I had the temperament for what you're doing...having just completed a brake job on my truck...and having a good 20 minute long rant and panic attack over potentially ruining my ride.
Wonderful video as always, thank you very much...
Great job, spiffing.
Great Job!
G'day the deck looks awesome well done.
Cheers Rory
it looks great Mads! I hope you can get at least one more layer down before winter sets in... I know that will be tough.
Always look forward to seeing a GREAT video you put out. Waiting for the next GREAT video from a loyal follower from Seattle Washington.
years ago when I was a young lad I sailed on a ship out of gottiesburg Sweden we used rye kings to stop sea sickness . it worked quite well . can you take us on one of your walks with your dog .
Great job. My how fast the time went by. however you got a LOT of stuff done. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! To be honest I wouldn't mind a short break right about now ;)
Nice job! Looking good!
awesome, soon i will start with my DIY project on a Irwin 42 ketch and your videos will help me a lot thank you for doing the videos :-)
Sail Life tshirt suggestion:
tShirt = logo + "Pretty darn spiffy";
Are you the secret Mads girlfriend? :)
lol nope, just another nerdy programmer/sailor
What is it with programmers being sailors? I've also noticed that programmers are generally also musicians. Are you two musicians (even if thoroughly amateur) as well? :)
Looks like I've found my tribe, as I too am a programmer, sailor and (very amateur as yet) musician.
We's da "Saltyputermusican Ohana", yeah!?
Aloha īa kākou, a me mahalo nui Mads! ʻAu i ke kai loa maikaʻi..! 🤙
I'd buy that shirt!
Pretty "dang" spiffy you mean... :-)
The 'cliff-hanger' is... Andy is coming for a visit and will lay a teak deck for you?! Haha, in all seriousness it would be great to see two of my favourite channels do a meet up!
Hopefully you are getting some shop space. Boat looks great!
Nicely done!
A job well done Mads! :)
Tack Mads.
I love your boat humor
Cliffhanger....!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...
..lovin' it! 🤙
Great job. Hope your alternate plan for the winter comes through. Different shed???
Another excellent effort. The result will be a much cleaner appearing boat. I would recommend , as have others, that you work a way to keep Athena covered until you get a final finish on the epoxy. Hope you work out that deal on another indoor spot to continue the work.

I just finished watching some of your back videos, and I'm curious; Having now almost wrapped up on finishing the deck repairs, and given you didn't expect this level of work, if you could go back in time would you still pick this boat?
