Mads, thank you so much for going through all the trouble to make these videos. I've watched every one you've made most of them more than once. When I get tired or frustrated with my own refit (not nearly as complicated as yours) I take some time and review your videos. They always re-energize me and get me focused on my work. Some day I hope I have the chance to shake your hand and thank you personally. See you Sunday
One more comment--I get so excited thinking about the result of all your hard work. It's like a Sunday tradition for me to watch these now! Can't wait to see her on the water
Love the video! For temporarily adhering two things together, nothing beats a hot glue gun. I actually use it for cabinets as well. The glue joint is fully reversible with a hair blow dryer & the bond is surprisingly strong when left cold. Fast, easy, and very simple to remove the glue residue when you separate the glue joint. (cheap also) They even have cordless versions if you don't feel like messing with a cord.
Only seeing Athena once a week I had just come to take it for granted that the port lights were glassed over. As soon as you said you said how you had been going crazy to open them up it suddenly occurred to me "oh, of course!" When you cut them out It made such a difference it was like seeing an actual boat again for the first time in a while, and she was beautiful.
The idea behind any jig is to make life easier. I like your jig. It works. Where would you be without it? There will always be room for improvement in any jig or in any skill. Your videos are evidence of just that... It has been great watching your videos. Hope you get to paint soon!
I have deep respect for your patience. Besides that I admire your time spending to film and point out your doing. I'm a big fan hence the fact that I'm not handy at all. Cheers...
As always great video and pleasant to watch. You coming right along doing great. If I may, just to explain my comments on prior videos, With the step down on the inside, you now have 3 90 degree corners to finish. Two outside rights and one inside right. A lot of work. If you had extended the deck to the side of the boat you would only have one outside 90 degree to work. The outside right is easy. That inside right is a PIA. To work a 90 degree corner, fare it square with a perfect square 90 edge. After its level on top and even on the side then you sand off the square edge. All your corners will be perfectly smooth and straight. Very easy. Next, the tool you use to level the fairing compound needs to be a little flexible. In auto body they have spreaders with 3 steel rods in them to control the stiffness of the spreader. use all three for very stiff. use one rod for more conforming around a curve. The spreader should conform to the deck some, but still spread the faring compound conforming to the surface. For final faring on autos glazing compound is used. It covers the bubbles and spreads out thinly, easily and has better shape sanding characteristics. Many of the fairing compounds will absorb water. Very bad. I would paint the deck with high build epoxy primer paint to seal it. The high build epoxy auto paint will seal the fairing compound and help you to see wavy surfaces. You can fair again if needed. An old body trick is painting a surface with primer to show up any imperfections. When you sand, sand in a X pattern. Back and forth for one leg. Then change directions. Back and forth on the other leg.
Looking good if you ever go to sell Athena let me know, that is one well built boat. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos to allow us all to come along on your / her journey I I know you would achieve a lot more work if you didn't have to stop to film it is appricated quickest 15 minutes of the week
Yah. Imagine thirty years from now and Mads decides to sell it because the grandchildren are taking all his time. What a valuable record the next owner will have of everything that has been done to the boat. Except he skipped over a lot of the sanding. That is the only drawback to his documentation. Oh, well.
You might get some good tips from watching some auto body repair. They do block sanding in diagonal crosses with a guide coat of color to see where the high and low spots are. I use this technique on cars myself and it is easy to get the hang of. It leaves the panels perfectly flat and since you're doing the cabin in a semi gloss that's exactly what you want. Check it out.
1968 Camaro Final Prep for Paint MUSCLE CARS & HOT RODS Episode 140. You have to go about 9 minutes into the vid to see him doing the crosshatch sanding. any low spots on the panel will show up because the guide coat wasnt sanded off.
Please spend some more time explaining the edge jig and what you could do to improve it. Anxious to see this. This is one of those details on a boat that is important and makes the difference in a hack DIY and a talented one with a good out come.
Might I recommend a channel with a lot of fairing and painting to perfection ideas.... the followtheboat channel. He had his boat Esper in Thailand and did weekly updates with the work and the painting and fairing processes looked like they would achieve perfection. If you already know about this channel, no worries. Thanks for another great video with a sanding time lapse! 🤤
Mads, 12 hours of sanding would be agony for anyone without a back injury. I feel like you are at a level above most people when it comes to sanding! lol
I tried sanding a car by hand once...only managed to work 4 hours on it before my screaming middle section vetoed my resolve, so yeah, he's superhuman in that respect.
I am 51 now, when I was 16, I got a job at an auto body shop. Yup, as a Sander. One day, my first week or so there, I was sent to sand the bed of a pickup truck. They found me sleeping in the bed, hugging the sander and my head resting on the roll of sandpaper like it was a pillow. They started calling me Turtle after that. When I was about 20, they started telling people, we think he is almost a master sander, and they started calling me Tortuga... which is Spanish... for Turtle.
Hey Mads. When sanding down the fairing compound (bondo), try to sand in a criss cross pattern. Do the section one way and mirror it the other (Hard to describe). I work a lot with bondo and bodyfillers on cars and when you do circular sandingmotions you tend to flatten it out instead of following the radius. Still impressive work you do!!
Now i sound like a know it all... I have not worked a lot with thickened epoxy from West systems, but after stirring up a mix take 30 seconds to flatten the compound on a board with a spatula. that way you squeeze out the small air bubbles that form. That will remove some of the pinholes and will leave a smoother surface.
I like your solution to the radius jig. I was going to mention making something like that in my long winded explanation but decided not to because of the rough surface it leaves. Either way, there is always a bit of sanding and re-dragging of the template until smooth. Epoxy is not quite like modeling clay. However, you are on your way! Nice work so far.
Your Edge Fairing Jig is cool, I hope you get it dialed in to what feel works best. I think it will be useful in sanding too if you apply some sandpaper to it with spray adhesive (or just use self stick sand paper sheets).
Just finished watching all of your videos and i'm loving the project. I admire what you are doing and look forward to seeing the boat progress and your story unfold.
if you do any more heavy applications of filler, it might be worth waiting around for it to set-up just a bit. when it goes rubbery, you can use "cheese grater"-like tools to quickly sculpt your surface. With a little practice you can rough-in a large surface with a lot less sanding.
Nice work.. wouldn’t it been better to leave the windows with the fiber glass in place. Your moving her outside into the COLD weather soon. Keeping the weather outside I think would be handy. Or are you planing on re-installing the hatches before you move her out side. Your my best by far DYI weekly program. Thanks.
Should've covered the edge jig in packing tape for smoothness. Also, a section of it should've led down to the flat one which should be about 3 cm max. Tho, frankly, the best kind is the edge kind. You can't beat that stuff.
Oh my ... I used to be called a "tool-fu**er" the whole craftsman-part of my life, ever, still am, tbh, building strange apparatuses and jigs galore for almost any appliance, but I just learned I still frantically lack of a stock vacuum-aspirated sanding board 😂 *Tipps his hat for the interweb's most perfect DIY, like usual on -sunday- Madsday nights. Thanks for sharing, take care and mind Your back before it reminds You!
Play the Sail Life Drinking Game! Take one shot each time Mads says "doohickey"! :-D All joking aside, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them and I really admire your editing speed and discipline. Luckily there's still quite a lot of your videos I haven't watched yet (so I don't have to wait a week between each one) ;-)
doohickey, doohickey, doohickey, doohickey, doohickey .... Muhahahah!1!1!!! ;) Thank you so much :) Hopefully you don't find the old videos too toe-curling (I have a hard time watching them) :)
Whoo hoooo! Another Madz video and lots of good progress yet again. Good work on the deck hollow.👍 one question -if the boat is destined to winter outside why did you not leave the windows glassed in?
Called it quits.. after "only" 12 hours. Also you should begin a service where for €1 we could download a "Good morning, it's Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday etc, morning" message to have as an alarm on our phones.
Deck is comming out great....Hahaha yeah, somtimes the eyes need a little satifaction. I can understand Your temptation with the windows. But don´t You think this time that was a little too enthusiastic. I understand the boat goes outside and now You have to close the holes. Of course the best would be installing the windows but I think there are a lot more things that go before that. Wish You best luck and hope die dunkelgrauen November Regenwolken have mercy and move some place else.
The center of the fiberglass that covered up the openings for the portlights wasn't wetted out so it wouldn't have been waterproof :) I'd much rather just tape up the portlights in case I don't manage to finish painting the deck in time :)
She better be damn well worth it.....or I will marry Mads myself. That's it Mads...tell her I saw you first ...besides I know I like boats more than she does.........LMAO.
The primer I'll be using cures down to 5C and the paint actually cures down to -5 C .., yes negative 5 degrees... that is crazy :) I think the real issue is going to be taking care of the last faring. The weather looks just a tad too cold this week :/
Hey, Mads what did you end up deciding for replacing those old aluminum rails? I keep wondering and I don't know if I missed your decision. I do remember that new ones were quite expensive tho
Hi Mads Nice to see the progress on the boat. I just bought my own boat today, a Beneteau First 27, a 27 foot sailboat. Im gonna be moving back to my hometown Skive onto my new boat in about two and a half months, and my plan is to do my own refitting of my new boat. I have seen almost all your refitting videoes, but i was wondering how much you pay every time you have to get your boat moved? I need to get my new boat transported from Rødekro to Skive, and the prices i have found is super expensive. So any good advice would meen a lot to me! Looking forward to have you as a neighbor, and let me know if you could use a pair of extra hands for any help.
Welcome to Skive (in advance). I don't have much experience moving boats by truck. I did have Obelix moved around 20 km on a truck and I think that was around 2000 Kr. When the boat is moved around in the yard that is 1000 Kr. I look forward to meeting you in person :)
what happened to MAS to stop you using it-and accepting amine blush? And can I find your list of videos in printable form (thinking of binge watching as Christmas!)
Sail Life how about a wooden raised toe rail. Cheaper than a replacement aluminium one, and aesthetically more pleasing. Plus any excess water on deck would drain straight over the side. Loving the refit. 😎
Every time I watch your videos I'm thinking I need to buy some more epoxy, sand paper, glass, paint etc for the next project on my boat. Seems like one or the other of the ingredients always runs out before the others.
Hehe, I know that feeling :) I'm very much looking forward to being able to stop spending money for just a few weeks ;) Most of the projects I'll be working on this winter aren't going to be super costly (in terms of money)
wait for painting after 15.11.2017 will be better weather ;) big high pressure is coming to us for atlantic ocean :) I`m also waiting for better weather (with out rain) to put some sika in the middle of my cockpit teak (i don`t have hangar like you -- lucky you ) :) But of course great video like always :) If you have time check my first video about my old Carter 30 where i change all interior :)
Mads, thank you so much for going through all the trouble to make these videos. I've watched every one you've made most of them more than once. With midterm exams this coming week, I'd rather watch this video than do homework... I just love these weekly videos way to much
Thank you so much :) Best of luck on the exams! :)
10 hours of sanding, you must be superman! After an hour I am done, worn out. Your the man Mads!
Love the video! For temporarily adhering two things together, nothing beats a hot glue gun. I actually use it for cabinets as well. CK H temporary is the key word here
@CK H I'm sure that would be relevant if Denmark were tropical.
You probably missed the part of the above comment that said temporarily. No-one is suggesting hot glue as a permanent adhesive.

Thank you so much :)
By the way, Athina is actually the name of my wife :-)
agreed. i feel exhausted just taking old headliner out and rebedding two winches
I can feel your pain Mads, my marathon is polishing, same deal, and lots of it. Great work buddy.
Mads! "The Great Hive Mind" comment made me laugh LOUD and unexpectedly so bad that my dog will not go near me. WOW! You're awesome
I have deep respect for your patience. Besides that I admire your time spending to film and point out your doing. I'm a big fan hence the fact that I'm not handy at all. Cheers...
Yep, the days are getting shorter and the temperature is dropping, a clear sign that old man winter is coming.
Pantaloons and Doo Hickey's ..... Time to break out the Sarsaparilla ! looking great
Your channel has fast become one of my favorites Mads.
So your "crew" did not want to join you in the "Joy of Sanding" ?!!
Your edge jig is INGENIOUS !
As always great video and pleasant to watch. You coming right along doing great.

You really are getting there with the deck rebuild. Am looking forward to seeing how you go about the deck painting process.
Looks great! It amazes me how dedicated you are to getting your beautiful boat finished!
Thank you so much :)
That is a sweetly quiet vacuum.....
It's the best vacuum I've ever had! It's been through remodeling one entire house and soon two sailboats. The thing just refuses to die :)
Great way to end a weekend, after dinner time on Athena!
Most common phrase in Mads' commentary "...a bit of quick sanding..." :D
Very nice. Clever answer to the jig challenge. Gonna be one fine boat.
Looking good if you ever go to sell Athena let me know, that is one well built boat. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos to allow us all to come along on your / her journey I I know you would achieve a lot more work if you didn't have to stop to film it is appricated quickest 15 minutes of the week

Movie Maker yes, more sanding on the extended version!

Pa-leese. Another level of perfection is not what we need. Maybe Mads but us too?
Maybe provide a link or two to the vids.
1968 Camaro Final Prep for Paint MUSCLE CARS & HOT RODS Episode 140. You have to go about 9 minutes into the vid to see him doing the crosshatch sanding. any low spots on the panel will show up because the guide coat wasnt sanded off.

WOOHOO!!!! NEW SAIL LIFE VIDEO!!!!
the fairing looks great. can't wait for the painting part. :D
Your Mastery of the English language is better than 80% of the uk... "new supplies thusly aquired " pure Shakespeare
Thnx a lot for all your efforts in both filming and refitting simultaneously! This is a true inspirational and teaching DIY-channel 👍🏽
Thank you so much :)

awesome progress Mads. it was nice of Thomas to come by and lend a hand again :) Cheers from PEI Canada, Bryan.
It was, wasn't it!
Best of luck finishing the cabin top, looking forward to paint!
I think the little jig is genius.
Nice one Mads.
I hope for some painting next time. My knee hurts of watching you sitting like that for all that time ;-)
Cheers.
I really look forward to Sunday afternoons now! Great work!
Thank you so much :)
My Sunday is now complete. Great video and congrats on the progress Mads.

Awesome work, Mads! Don’t let anybody give you shit about that colorful knee pad! 🌈
A stir stick genious.
Getting closer . (Hamilton, Ontario)
Slowly getting there :) However last night the temperature dropped down to 3C ... I think I might be out of time
good job mads its really good of you to share your refit and it gives me a good start on my boat i just purchased . i bought a midship 25

1 hour less rendering?! Wow - Final Cut on a Mac is the way to go - great Pro Tip :)

Your moving her outside into the COLD weather soon. Keeping the weather outside
I think would be handy. Or are you planing on re-installing the hatches before you move her out side.
Your my best by far DYI weekly program. Thanks.
Nice trick in the selfmade tool!
Thx for the vid!
As always Mads - a fantastic video from you. :-)
Looks good...your getting close.
Hi mads ! thumbs up ; been watching and everything looks Awesome !
Hi Moe :) Thank you so much! I hope everything is good in Florida :)
Great progress
Thanks! :)
Should've covered the edge jig in packing tape for smoothness. Also, a section of it should've led down to the flat one which should be about 3 cm max. Tho, frankly, the best kind is the edge kind. You can't beat that stuff.
another great video...thanks Mads!
thank you again for a fine informative video
Thank you so much :)
Best ending to the weekend. I thought the boat was going to be moved into the workshop, not outside?
That spiffy hat looks warm! :)
i assume your back pain is almost gone :)
What a beautiful couple of boats you have next to Athena
ahahahah. i wrote the comment before your announcement of backache
It would be great if you did a review video on your power tools. I was real surprised when you Fein multi tool quit on you!
Oh my ... I used to be called a "tool-fu**er" the whole craftsman-part of my life, ever, still am, tbh, building strange apparatuses and jigs galore for almost any appliance, but I just learned I still frantically lack of a stock vacuum-aspirated sanding board 😂

Haha :D Yeah that thing is pretty awesome... both for sanding and as a form of torture ;)
Play the Sail Life Drinking Game! Take one shot each time Mads says "doohickey"! :-D
All joking aside, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them and I really admire your editing speed and discipline.
Luckily there's still quite a lot of your videos I haven't watched yet (so I don't have to wait a week between each one) ;-)

a week is such a LONG wait :(
Whoo hoooo! Another Madz video and lots of good progress yet again. Good work on the deck hollow.👍 one question -if the boat is destined to winter outside why did you not leave the windows glassed in?
Love your vids man! I’m thinking about buying a sailboat, but it’s only 21 ft and not 38
FCPX on a MacBook... is definitely the way to go...its what I'll be doing.
The jig is great! Did you by any chance wax the sliding surface? If not try a couple of coats of paste wax and buff it to help it slide.
Been waiting for this mads
Yeah, I was cutting it kind of close today :)
Mads-PLEASE wear a mask when cutting fiberglass!!.
I do.... 99% of the time ;)
Yes - your lungs are precious to us :) almost like the structure of Athena for you - necessary for you to take care of :)
Called it quits.. after "only" 12 hours. Also you should begin a service where for €1 we could download a "Good morning, it's Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday etc, morning" message to have as an alarm on our phones.
Haha, I'm sure I could dig out those audio clips from old videos ;)
Looking good! have you tried pastry bags for getting the fairing compound where it needs to go?
Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing paint on. Are you following the Volvo Ocean Race? Go Team Vestas.... both Yankee and Dane boat
Deck is comming out great....Hahaha yeah, somtimes the eyes need a little satifaction. I can understand Your temptation with the windows. Mads you will have the best warrior in the world well done looking good. After all the sanding you can have a rest soon when you see the girlfriend 👍
stotas2 I'm sure of that 👍.
She better be damn well worth it.....or I will marry Mads myself. That's it Mads...tell her I saw you first ...besides I know I like boats more than she does.........LMAO.
12 hours, you're Super Sanding Man! Move over Justice League.
Haha :D Thank you so much :)
Thanks for sharing. 😊 👍👍 ⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
lots of doohickeys in this one Mads!
It's a doohicky bonanza! :D
Great job as usual Mads but how do the owners of the other boats feel about all the dust they're getting for free ???
The "Hive Mind" LOL I know what books you read
You say that you want to paint next weekend, but most paints require 15C or better for application and proper curing. Are you likely to have that ?
The primer I'll be using cures down to 5C and the paint actually cures down to -5 C .., yes negative 5 degrees... that is crazy :) I think the real issue is going to be taking care of the last faring. The weather looks just a tad too cold this week :/
WOW ! Never heard of paint curing at that low of a temperature !!
Great video Madds , how did the air freshener in the tin work out ?
Thanks :) That thing was awesome! I'll be buying more of those for sure :)
Great ! Can you send me the name please ?
Where did you find the long board hand sander with the vaccum action? looks like nice!
'Thusly' indeed. 😎
Hey, Mads what did you end up deciding for replacing those old aluminum rails? I keep wondering and I don't know if I missed your decision. I do remember that new ones were quite expensive tho
I'm going to replace the toe rail (get a new one) I just haven't decided which one to go with yet :)
Hi Mads
Nice to see the progress on the boat. I just bought my own boat today, a Beneteau First 27, a 27 foot sailboat. Im gonna be moving back to my hometown Skive onto my new boat in about two and a half months, and my plan is to do my own refitting of my new boat.

About a 10" Softpad would make the project go faster. Cool tool tho. :)
Hmm. How come you did not keep the extra glass over the port holes until you were done fairing and painting?
Ther were a few bumps and high spots I feel would have gotten in the way :)
👍
Thanks! :D
May I ask why you decided to glass over the deck joint and do you plan to install a rubrail at a later date?
So, faring compound is like Bondo?
I've never used Bondo but from my understanding yes the two are very similar :)
@@SailLife The difference is that Bondo is polyester resin based, not epoxy based. Catalysed with MEKP
Yeah,.. we really do need some "Pretty Dang ...." merchandise from Mads, don'tcha think!?
:) Aloha! Mahalo nui īa ʻoe! 🤙
what happened to MAS to stop you using it-and accepting amine blush? And can I find your list of videos in printable form (thinking of binge watching as Christmas!)
Hey there Mads, mind if I ask why with all the sanding you do why not use an electric/pnumatic long/straight board ?
Yes, spiffy
You should do a pattern for the non skid in my opinion instead of the entire deck.
I do plan on doing some kind of patter. I haven't decided what kind of pattern yet though :)
Come on Ireland!!!
Did you decide anything about the toe railing?
I've decided to replace the toe rail (get a new one). I just haven't decided which one to go with yet :)
Hehe, I know that feeling :) I'm very much looking forward to being able to stop spending money for just a few weeks ;) Most of the projects I'll be working on this winter aren't going to be super costly (in terms of money)
wait for painting after 15.11.2017 will be better weather ;) big high pressure is coming to us for atlantic ocean :) I`m also waiting for better weather (with out rain) to put some sika in the middle of my cockpit teak (i don`t have hangar like you -- lucky you ) :) But of course great video like always :)
If you have time check my first video about my old Carter 30 where i change all interior :)
