Enjoyed your video. I bought a X5 2001 4.4i for my son when he turned 16. We got it cheap and fixed it up. Antera wheel were worth more than we paid for it. He got to learn about cars and appreciate and respect his car more, and I go the joy of teaching my son something. That car both infuriates us and is a pure joy to drive. I've got the 2006 4.8is. It's a beast, head turner. Same as shown here. Custom Supersprint exhaust, aFe air. I love it! But....make sure you can afford repairs and maintenance, or have some mechanical skills. This SUV needs constant attention. i.e. Air suspension, sensors, relays, etc. Lot of things that will and can go bad on it. Give it the proper love and it will return the favor.

Kesha, I have a 4.8is in the same color but 2006. It is costly and a pain when things go wrong, but its a joy to drive when all is working. Like most BMW enthusiast, we try to do most the maintenance and nickel and dime when we can to save costs. I only use mines on the weekend and drive a prius for daily commute. Best advice is to try to do your own when possible, and get a local BMW specialist to do your fixes.

As a (manual) E46 M3 owner (and lover), I can tell you that the 4.8is is 2-3x the car for half or a third of the price...and no one knows. I just wish it had paddles. As an X5M owner I will tell you that the 4.8is is flat out better around town, the only advantage to the X5M are those 80-140 pulls, and how often do you really do that? Anybody want to buy an X5M?!

Found a workshop in Germany which can swap refurbished engine for 6000 euros, refurbished gearbox is 4000 and after that you are good to go next 200-300k. What other can you can get for 10k? Also bought Android 9 inch touchscreen multimedia made for E53, it fits perfectly and i have DAB radio, wifi hotspot, youtube, screens in headrests, and all other featurs Android can offer in this car. There is nothing else in this world a man needs other that this. Yes you have to be a DIY guy if you do not want to throw bunch of money in BMW dealership and you have to maintain it properly or it will bite you harder than you can handle.

These Bimmers were on top of their game and offered driver involvement and fun not found on their models today. Tires are expensive and I imagine you will have to replace an air suspension component or two over your ownership. Sometimes you will lose some pixels in the gauges or get some lines on the infotainment screen. "Reliability" is not really an issue, I would say that this car falls under the "so many features that there are more things to break" category. The folks who call this car unreliable are comparing used examples at $15k vs new Corollas for $15k...Not luxury/enthusiast vehicles with comparable specs and features. Remember, just because you can pick one up for $15k, you're buying a $100,000 truck and you're getting everything that comes with that, good and bad, out of warranty.

i'm not an expert so just my opinion, but if you are looking at a used 4.8is you might want to consider the 4.6is. it is much easier to fix the big preventive maintenance item on the 4.6 (timing chain guides) than the big PM item on the 4.8 (valve seals). the 4.8 has a more complicated moon roof that people say can fail or leak and air suspension that fails. and i've read the 5 speed gearbox on the 4.6 is superior to the 6 speed gearbox of the 4.8. powerwise they nearly the same and the small increase in power of the 4.8 is barely noticeable over the 4.6. plus it's not like you are going to be hot rodding one of these old cars daily anyway so you will rarely get into full power on either. i've been daily driving a 2003 4.6is for 7 years so of course i have some bias so take that into account when you do your own research. good luck. and yes, you need to do as much of your own preventive maintenance as you can. if you can do that these things should not cost you an arm and a leg. however, that said, and even though i do drive mine daily, i would not consider these for a daily driver. my commute is not far. if i had a long commute i would get a little fart car for that and save my X5 for sunny weekend drives down twisty back roads

I love flooring mine at 80mph up to 100mph - the engine really shows its worth over 80ph. Get a good LPG conversion and learn some mechanic skills and this is the car that ticks all the boxes: comfort, economy, power, speed, rarity, taste, tonne of space, chics, evil sound, and imola red, walnut trim and red leather seats: so much swaaag 👊 It's the 4.8is which will soar most in value 🔥🔥💨
Only this 4.8is Alpina N62 engine ROARS as satisfactorily as the best of them. I'd rank this amongst the 10 best sounding V8s of all time.

    • @WestVanGarage
      @WestVanGarage  6 лет назад +4

Thanks for watching! 0-60 times vary across many sources. I've even heard some being able to achieve 0-60 with the 4.8is in the high 5's. Most say however that both achieve in the low 6's. In normal driving conditions, that's virtually the same if you ask me. Where you can really feel the difference however is the quarter mile and top speed, as the 4.8is' 10 or so additional hp and a ~300 pound smaller curb weight (the curb weight for some reason also varies among sources, so dont quote me on it) make the difference. However, if you're interested in track driving, the 4.8i is the way to go due to its newer chassis design and better aerodynamics.

I'm looking at google images of the E53 interior vs E70. I'll take the E70 X5 interior anyday, hands down. Way more luxurious feel. Reliability...dude that has nothing to do with E53 vs E70. It has everything to do with that N62 4.8L engine. You step down to the E70 xdrive35i and the reliability shoots up to much better levels. Less oil seals to worry about replacing at massive cost.

E53 was simpler and more reliable with aging. The door panels would peal on the E70, and the E70 N54/5 sounds worse than the M54 naturally aspirated 3.0i, although the E70 is way faster. E53 also looks better than the E70 hands down unless it’s the pre facelift E53 which was kinda ugly. Good video. Few errors tho, that infotainment screen, that's not stock.
The one you're driving has oprional comfort seats. They came with standard sport seats.
Gauges are straight out of an E39 M5 basically.
I think BMW took the title back as fastest SUV with the 4.8iS. Remember, the cayenne wasn't out till 05/06.
The side steps and front "Le-mans" fender were optional too I think.
    They started $15k higher than a loaded X5 4.4.
BMW M did two prototypes X5. The X5 Le man had a Le Mans V12 motor in it. They made a 2nd prototype that had the S62 and rwd only, but like you said. BMW never went ahead with it.

2024+ also BMW: Let's just mess and mix everything up so nothing makes sense anymore. Let chaos reign! 3er and 4er separated, 3er should have been the 3 door, 540i no longer has a V8 and basically all numbers don't mean anything no more, newer engine TU's are a mess, the latest M4 front mask looks like a road kill beaver face and the rest of the car tries hard to be and not to be a Mustang kinda shaped car at the same time, there is a model called XM which is even uglier,...
IMO if you have the E53 X5 V8 then you can put an M badge on the trunk lid with absolutely no issues. Just because someone at BMW decided against it does not mean the car does not deserve it. Especially now after all these years.
