As the owner of this Vmax I just wanted to say a big thank you to Jim for getting to the bottom of the carb problem that had been driving me nuts for literally months!! I'd had the carbs off three times and thought I'd cleaned them to within an inch of their lives! Anyway thank goodness for an expert like Jim. Just to clear up a few points... I knew there was something wrong with the diaphrams as the slide actions between the four were not consistent and I had mentioned this to Jim and he was also aware I'd hurredly thrown the bits back on the bike for him, hence probably the trapped pipes and so on. Also, just as a matter of (safety!) interest, the tyres are not original. The back tyre is wider than standard and was replaced about two years ago.
What a great bloke who sent you these key rings. Legend. Great video like always, please do never stop swearing and waffeling, there is so much knowledge shared in that.
Might be old tyres, but probably have fresh air in them 😊 -old joke. When we were young we would buy up old British bikes and try to get them running. The free papers were full of misleading ads so we used to add our own description. Such as ‘motorcycle complete-all parts available in boxes’ and ‘fresh air in tyres’.
Great that you solved the problem. Shame we never discovered where it came from but you proved that by treating every symptom systematically you can remedy the problem without knowing the cause.
Great work Jim and it sounds awesome now, your attention to details are top notch, well done too 17 minutes before the first F bomb 😂, you were trying really hard well done mate it will take time, maybe try using fiddle sticks instead? already looking forward to the next one 👍👌
Jim. It is so good watching you work on these bikes. It is fantastic. I am a bit past riding the big bikes these days, but putt around on a 250 Suzuki every now and then. However the fuel pump has stopped working and the injector is blocked from the lack of use. I was pretty relaxed at the discovery that the bike was not running because I reckon I can fix it based on the knowledge I have gained from you. Once the Suzuki is fixed I plan to do the carbies on my wifes 1975 CB 400f that she has owned for almost 40 years. Wish me luck. Dave in Australia.
I like those Morgan Carb tune. I had the exact same issue after dismantling the carbs on a ZZR 600 . The two outer carbs were in balance and the other two were wildly out.
Air box breather pipe tip.....slide the coolant bottle up out the way and you can access the hose, long nose pliers on the breather pipe to slide it on 👍
I love a happy ending. Criminal putting miles on a bike? They were built to be and not worshiped. :) Did you notice how the left hand wing mirror disappeared during the road test.
I would have been curious to try riding it on choke to see how it performed. While on throttle you could have turned the choke off to see if it could run at all. A spark quality test and vacuum test before carb strip. I like to rule out as much as I can before its pulled down.
Best channel on RUclips!!! You’re a bloody legend!!!!! By the way best thing I ever did was listen to you and buy a set of JIS screwdrivers!! Top man! Keep them coming!!👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Something to try for the engine audio. I had issues recording engine/exhaust sound on my bike whilst riding. Wind noise was an issue, but as i was also speaking the mic in my helmet just didnt do the bike justice. I use a cheap cardo like in helmet speakers and mic setup, just bought the wind soc foams for the mic. Helped alot with wind noise. Try using an external mic from your camera, i have an inst360 with a usbC mic. I have the mike in the tail bag on the bike, this prevents the wind noise, but i also found that when stationary it stops/reduces the reverb and bouncing around of the engine noise. give it a go
A wind sock (wind muff, dead cat etc) would help, but in this case I think it's also an issue of volume because it has a clipping characteristic to it. Try moving the mic further away for loud noises.
For the mics, if you’re using the DJI Mic 2, you can tweak some settings to get the best out of them. Put them in 32bit float mode (the manual has it all in there) and make sure to turn off any noise reduction, voice enhance or any other settings that mess with the raw capture. You’ll probably notice it seems a little quiet out of the box that way, but you can increase gain with practically no risk of clipping. Also second the comment I saw about dynamic mics, obviously bigger and more of a pain to use quickly on the fly but you’d get better sound. Best of all would be a proper condenser mic - but even more of a pain as they need phantom power and they’re much more delicate than dynamic mics. Long story short, I’ve gotten good bike engine sound from the DJI mic 2 in 32bit float mode with the gain turned up a bit. Good luck!
You could use a DJI microphone or first try a wind breaker, that fluffy thing that goes on the mic, it might filter the high frequency and give you a more natural sound. Also check your gain and change it from auto to manual if possible. By the way, the DJI comes with 2 mics if you like and have one on you and one on the bike, that will balance nicely, they are costly though. 😊
I would say a rode mic very popular with bloggers etc. and yes in helmet normally fitted with a dead cat (furry thing) for wind noise.as always great to see real work in real time👌
The vloggers could be using Cardo Packtalks, they can connect to the camera via Bluetooth so the in helmet mic does voice audio and that has wind cancellation built in too. I don’t record when riding but I came across a few videos when researching my intercom explaining how to set it up for vlogs.
Had 4 Vmax,s now still own 2 and to be honest ive spent so much on them and never been happy with the way they run, 1 of the 2 i still own is a one owner with only 8,000 miles and that pop,s and farts if you leave them standing for more than 2 months you get problems ,if the carbs were up right instead of on there side think they would run alot better
Nice fix. Mic and audio quality is the bane of my life but the DJi Osmo action 4/5 and the DJi Mic2 are a godsend. I always do a bit of a tweak in poat also. Found that Capcut is also great for quick audio fixes. Good luck :D
Another great video Jim, just wish my Vmax was in a video!! It’s still running like a brand new bike absolutely perfect, it’s now put away for the winter, full tank, stabiliser and I have not drained the carbs this time. - Any more tips for winter storage?
Wouldn't know where to start with anything without carbs. When things got serious there was colour tune, glass sparkplugs with a mirror and tweak the burn to the same shade of blue. More fun on a v12 with carbs in ye olden days. Should be able to choose any rpm and hold it stable. Lean usually hunts between pilot to needle and won't hold between 1500-2000. Sound quality seems fine, have you checked your speaker quality on playback?
The best mic for engine sound is probably to get a dynamic microphone, due to the higher mass in the driver they aren't as sensitive to transients (ie mechanic noise and clatter). Drawback is that they are on the larger side. Perhaps talk to a music shop and ask for one suited for a bass drum?
What was the fix? I know on some models the proper Yamaha intake clips have a notch to fit on a lug on the rubber intake manifold. I have suspected that regular jubilee clips can lead to air leaks as they don't have that notch
That's the anti-rotation notch for orienting the clips and stopping them from turning on the rubber when you've got a tool on them (which is preferably a flogged out Chinesium phillips with a bent shank, that's been used as a centre punch more than a screwdriver - Jim loves it when the previous guy's used one of them). And It certainly can introduce an airleak if the clamp is squeezing the rubber to the sides because of the high spot because there's a gap in contact between the clamp and the rubber each side of the high spot. I know because I''ve seen it (brakecleaner verified - well, actually it was LPG).
@ yeah, I had some fun with ones I'd overtightened over the years, which flattened the notch out, and they would rotate as I tried to tighten them up. They were 3mm allen heads (Thundercat). Ended up paying nearly £20 each for new ones. Ouch.
One thing I have discovered with CV type Carburettors they are incredibly sensitive to the Ais correction circuits both high and low speed circuits and for god's sake never fit any of those godamm Pod type filters unless you want to waste a fortune dialing it in to suit those filter types on a dyno . I had a modified Polaris 500 quad on the dyno and there simple was no main jet big enough to stop it leaning out on top end, Changing the air correctors which standard on that particular Mikuni Carburettor were not replaceable involves a small tap the same size as Yamaha Banshee 350 Quad bike pilot jets. These Jets are #25 size wise so very small and once the Carburettor is modified to take these very short pilot jets a set of number drills to modify them to the size that works for the application worked wonders. The Bike was lean with the largest main jet available for that particular carb model a #200 and once I played with different modified Banshee Pilot jets turned into Air Correctors it needed a roughly 1.4 mm size orifice wheras the standard Air corredtor measured by inserting a nunber drill was closer to 1.9 mm this then m,eant the main jet went down from a #200 which was lean on top and rich in the mid range to a # 170 main which was perfect and crisp in response in the mid range and with the modified Air corrector perfect on top end. Main jets start working just below half throttle and at that point the airfow is not the main factor with the air corrector but as the revs rise the Air corrector comes into play much more in balancing the main jet circuit to get the best overall ixture strength across the widest possible range. There is in most Carburettors a similar Jet and Air corrector combination in the low speed or idle circuit with the added aspect of slide cutaway in conventional non CV carburettors. Many people change Pilot jets trying to fix either a rich bog or lean bog off idle when what needs either modifying carefully with a file to make the cutaway larger or smaller or buying a very expensive slide, But beware of going leaner with Pilot jets because at high speed say the end of a straight on a race track when your engine may be spinning at 12,000 RPM and you close the throttle the engine is running on the mixture from the pilot circuit. Go too lean by changing Jets instead of investigation slide cutaway and that can lead to an engine seizure on the overrun at the end of a long straight be that straight on Tar or Dirt
For the most part i dont think its the quality of your mic missing the audio, I think the little mic diaphragm is being overwhelmed by the high pressure of the audio especially from the exhaust. The mic is "clipping", especially with the bass notes. small mics are designed for higher frequency voice or far away low pressure bass, a professional mic with a larger diaphragm would probably resolve the issue. The larger the diaphragm the better it will deal with low frequency audio. Also, look at audio recording Mic's as apposed to a Voice mic.
😮Thought I was watching the wrong "super bike surgery" RUclips channel. But normally was resumed, 17 minutes 50 secs in 😂😂😂. SSLTD or anyone that knows which way the needle valve clip goes please tell me!!! I've got a 95 535 xv Virago and don't know if the clip opening goes towards the cover or does the open part go to carb. The first way is easy to install the float and still works but the other way is harder to install and would make it so the float stay in place. Please Help!! Would of loved to see the install of the needle valve 😢
Just looking through the pile of carbs I have here for servicing. I do have a set from a ZX6R J1. They arrived on the 24/10. I'm assuming not yours as I've only had them 2 weeks and quoted min 12 week turn around. If they are yours, I'd appreciate coms in the normal way, not RUclips comments.
Mics are way more sensitive than our ears and always pic up the internals of the engine and make then sound worse, I don't this there is much you can do when working up close.
Why didnt you check the balance when you were doing your diag, just like you say check compression, you would have saved the dude some money and saved yourself some time.
Because as he explained, they can be balanced masking a vacuum leak. In this case it was a wise move to just go straight to stripping the carbs - did you not see the pinched diaphragm in Part 1?
As the owner of this Vmax I just wanted to say a big thank you to Jim for getting to the bottom of the carb problem that had been driving me nuts for literally months!!

Good last tip , checking for air leaks as I've had on both cars & bikes air leaks on old hoses that led to whoever to then mess with idle/air
Splendid job! I see that I am not alone as one of your viewers to have been equally smitten with the redemption aspect of the key rings 🙏🏻👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
I love watching these fix it videos. I'm still enjoying my VFR since I watched your rc45 video!
