The Martial Arts Manga That Rivals Baki

- Tough is a heavily underrated manga, and I was surprised that no one really made a video on it so that's where I got the bright idea to create one. Even though it’s as insane and as good as Baki, it doesn’t have much fans. This manga has a prequel and a sequel. It was created by Saruwatari Tetsuya who is both the author and artist. He is very talented, anyways check out the manga and let me know what you think. If you are a fan of martial arts, definitely give this a read.
This is definitely one of my favorite videos that I have made!

I am not an animator, just someone who likes to try new things!
Tough is the manga that revealed my passion for martial arts and MMA 24 years ago.
One of my all time favorite series
Thanks for the tribute.
WOW you got into it early, never thought Id come across an OG reader!
Holyland will always be the gold standard in martial arts manga for me
amen to that
Holyland is extremly good but the reason why i love it is not the martial arts it is because the gangster live that was revealed how crule it can be since i have a lil brother that was involved in it while training in boxing that gave him a lot of confidence but i would say that Holyland have managed to be realistic when it comes to martial arts but it teach people about live
Glad to see a fellow Holyland fan
Holyland is a based pick considering the author did that shit even miura said so
one of the first martial arts manga I read that wasnt mainstream in the west 10ish years ago
That’s great not a lot of people talk about this manga let alone read it!
Hey Critic, it's good to see you here. Wonder, this Lad is a great youtuber in the german anime and YT scene.
The Prequel was surprisingly more of an action comedy while "Tough" which was set few years later had more serious tone to it.
Also the author was the guy who created "Story of Riki-Oh" which got an live action movie from Hong Kong that was cheesy gory to the point of slapstick. Also had two OVA movies
Which should i read first?
@@salz1554 the Prequel just to get to know his dad and also the basic gist of his "None lethal karate" princip
@@hanchimanthank you
But the real problem is the prequels translation isn’t finished to the point where you can’t find a picture of the final chapter.
@@someolddude3827 it been a while I read the prequel. The fan translation group abandoned it?
Tough is one of the driving factors that informed my decision to get into combat sports and fighting. The philosophical aspects of the story and what martial arts mean to kiichi and other characters really spoke to me. Tough is "Martial arts is a way of life" personified. JET vs Kiichi remains my favorite fight in manga to this day
Tough is phenomenal because of how amazing the MC’s dad is. Like there were times where I nearly teared up by how nice he was. Literally one of the best dads in manga.
What about yichiro hanma?😡
Dude fr. Oton is the goat.
Tough,Shamo and Holyland are probably the best martial art manga i've ever read
the end o shamo is just perfect
Shamo?
I dropped Shamo after the Banryukai fight. Holyland is good but repetitive and the author lets Yu off the hook some times as a protagonist in terms of skill. I recommend Teppu and All Rounder Meguru as well
Yeah i hope we'll see a reprint. I love martial art, samurai Manga💪👌
I did like shamo during the banryuukai fight with suguwara but after that the plot became a bit of a mess but despite that it was still pretty good, i hated how it ended they shouldve let suguwara and ryo fight at the end both at their peak conditions thats one of the things i wanted to see... but too bad we wont see suguwaras revenge on ryo
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MANGA. Tetsuya Saruwatari SNAPPED, I referred to it as the Berserk for of martial arts manga, in terms of art quality.
-
ALSO Tough is currently in its third part. Tough: Ryū wo Tsugu Otoko
The art is insane and that’s a understatement
'The berserk of martial arts manga'......spot on bro!!
Really dope to see somebody acknowledge this. Anytime I try to discuss martial arts manga with folks it's usually Baki, Kengan, Ippo and Holyland which is all good but Kiichi is in that pantheon of awesome protagonists people should know about it
Dude holy shit your the first comment I’ve seen talking about holyland. If you haven’t yet check out a manga called Rikudou
@@25thbam95 funny enough I just started reading Rikudou the designs are so cool!
@@flashgordon9308 dude I swear!!!
I watched the three part anime where his dad had a rival who was a pro wrestler. I can never get tired of that anime because it was so well written in my opinion.
I think it was called Shootfighter Tekken. Loved it. Wish there was more.
I’m glad someone else knows this anime as link to the manga
Nice video! I’ve had this idea stuck in my head for ages; I’m glad Tough is getting some love!
I’m glad you felt the same way as me
Thank you for making this! I'm more of a Baki lover, but i seen the 3 part OVA Shootfighter Tekken way back. I'm hoping the love for Baki will bring a rise to ridiculously cool MMA fighting animes. This one definitely deserves a shot.
This video is so well made. Love the bgm 10/10. Anime, Martial Arts and my favorite genres of music all in one video. You got my sub.
Thanks, love the pfp
FINALLY!!! Someone decided to talk about this gem
This is one good thing RUclips recommended to me. I love Baki so I’m excited to learn about this manga. Thanks for making this vid!
I am so glad that more people are talking about tough!!! As much as I love Baki, Tough blow me away the instant I read Chapter 1.
Thank you so much for introducing me to this manga.
This is my most favorite manga ever. The story, characters, and fights are all great, and Kiichi has something that a suprising amount of fighting manga MCs don't have. A heart. He shows mercy to any and every opponent. Plus, his dad is a complete G.
I’m glad you liked the recommendation
Dude, this video is amazing, i fell in love with this manga right after finishing this video. Props to you !!
I started this manga but got so busy at the time and ended up forgetting about it, thanks for making me remember this masterpiece
Bro THANK YOU for making this..
This is such an underrated Manga and İMO tops Baki in everyway.
I've been begging people to notice this and/make videos about TOUGH for years.
You've earned my sub 😁
Great! I'm always looking for martial arts manga, and this video helped increase my list.
Tough, Baki series and Kengan Ashura & Omega are great martial arts mangas although some of them have something about bloodlines, assassination heritage techniques and superhuman power a bit, I like the scientific theories about the human body and philosophies in them.
Holyland is also great and more realistic, especially for practical use of martial arts techniques.
Tekken Chinmi is a classic.
Gamaran is great for traditional weapon techniques.
How to Fight manhwa is kinda nice. Quite funny too.
Kenji is more focused on Bajiquan.
Shamo, I still haven't read yet.
Iv been look for something that is like a mix of Baki and hippo and this definitely look like what Iv been looking for. Thank you so much for introducing me to this
This videos was great man, the editing was unique and had me engaged the whole time. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for giving tough some love, it's an amazing read for anyone who likes the martial arts genre cannot recommend it enough
This manga needs an anime. It had an ova back in the day but it is time for a complete series. Tough needs to to get out in the mainstream.
For real even a video game... when they were talking about kiryu for Tekken I got hyped thanking it was his uncle but apparently they were talking about a yakuza video game character
I have the Shootfighter Tekken DVD, and it would honestly be so amazing if they had continued to expand on what they had already done with it.
ehh...nah...i am good tho....not everything needs to be a mainstream trope
the thing that i like about tough, its prequal and sequel/spin offs is that every character has very different distinct reasons to fight where as in baki, the whole world revolves around Yujiro. This makes baki sort of one note as characters are often introduced explicitly as stepping stones or measuring sticks. where as for example the priest really wasent involved in kiibo's story outside of they fought. a lot of the side character in baki are either stepping stones for baki or aiding baki where as tough paints more a world that is independent from Kiibo and the rest of the miyazawa family.
Baki kinda has jumped the shark it feels nowadays, especially with Yujiro got the "Freddy Krueger treatment" where he is no longer seen as threatening. When Baki came out in the 90's, he was almost mystical and had a threatening aura antagonist. But nowadays he kinda stole the show. Sorta like how Homer Simpson stole the lead role from Bart Simpson
Glad to see this masterpiece being acknowledged
I heard about Tough about 6 years ago because of the OVA. I really liked it but for some reason that I can't remember I never looked into it again. Needless to say this video convinced me to check it out (thanks for once, yt recommendations), not only because you make it sound really interesting, but also because of your presentation and style (kudos for the 3rd Strike ost). I'll stick around to see more from you, mate
Thanks it means a lot and I’m glad you have a new manga to read
Dude, totally agree! I read this over the course of a few years with free online sites that had a team translate it. Sometimes I'd have to wait weeks for the next batch. It was awesome!
I love Tough so much
I love Baki so much
we need a Tough anime so bad
Worse. Baki is getting an official crossover with Kengan Asura, of all shows, this coming summer. Meaning his popularity is going to soar even higher now while Tough still flies under the radar.
I never thought I would see a yt video about tough. It’s such a niche manga
Great video, I've seen all the pre quel and sequels of Tough
I love tough because the grappling scenes are so realistic. I've never read a manga or watched an anime where the fights are this detailed. You guys can watch shootfighter tekken on youtube it's pretty good.
I’m 26 seconds in and I just seen someone use another dudes beard hair to take their back, are you sure it’s realistic?
@@Jjjjjjjnomjjjj which fight was this?
@@nappyheaded 0:26
@@Jjjjjjjnomjjjj They have some crazy stuff in there but I was comparing it to manga like baki and kengan ashura.
@@nappyheaded Kengan Ashuras grapplers do use real techniques, I didn’t go to far into it though so maybe the silliness comes in later on. Likely it would considering early Baki the grappling was semi realistic and later on it completely ignores that grappling does take some semblance of strength and that judokas can’t just turn humans into dishrags.
One of my absolute favorites
This is such a great manga! The kid had such pressure by being the next heir of Nadashinkage!
YEESSSSSS!!! Bro you dont realise how happy it makes me to see people give Tough some love. This manga completely stomps baki in my opinion. Especially as a martial artist
Finished this series. Great story. Great pacing. Great art. 10/10
I like that Tough is getting talked about I hope they get an anime
The author made Riki-oh. So I know this series is gonna be great
Holy shit, nice to finally see Sruwatari Tetsuya's manga get some attention. This is also just scratching the surface. Riki Oh and Hard are his best works.
Tough is amazing! Garouden, Baki and Tough are my main inspirations for getting back in the gym
Good to see this manga getting some love
Blasted through the manga after working through as much of Baki as was available, and then the same for Kengan Ashura. Tough scratched that same exact itch in a whole new fashion, and nearly flipped when I found the OVA. Definitely a fan of Saruwatari Tetsuya's other series, especially Kizudarake no Jinsei.
This is the manga that I wanted to read so bad, but since the prequel translation isn’t finished I can’t read it.
You still can, it’s easy to follow!
I have read this manga prolly 2 yrs ago. Its story is amazing what got loving it is the ridiculous grappling technique thats yet to be tested it effectiveness. On of which the "eel hold" the rest of the techniques is to be seen just yet.
I was waiting for someone to talk about TOUGH. It is one of my favourite martial arts manga and I want to hear your thoughts on the sequel TOUGH GAIDEN.
this is such a good video
3:57 As a longtime fan and reader of Baki, you're right. Like you, Baki was responsible for awakening my love for martial arts and inspiring me to train. It's still fun, it's still entertaining, but it's not the same thing it once was. For me, Grappler Baki lives up to the fame and recognition that the series has as a martial arts manga, but the other manga in the series don't even come close. Great video, I'll definitely give Tough a read.
And sorry for the big text. 😅
No worries, I love that you feel the same way people don’t understand how much Baki has changed
I've been telling people to read this manga for forever but no listens. Really hope this vid brings new fans to the serious.
Streetfighter 3 music is perfect in this.
Respect. I enjoyed the video its nice to see a video about Tough, its a underrated gem that needs more attention fr
Tough is fucking fantastic, glad to see someone talking about this gem 🙌🏾
The anime of this exists. It either came out in the 90s or early 2000s. Look up Shootfighter Tekken.
That bullet sliding scene is unforgettable.
Thanks for adding it to my reading list, I guess the only thing that bothers me is the art, not because it's ugly or something but because everyone is so jacked and huge especially the MC so when I looked up information about him it says he's around 140 pounds(60 kg) but I can't stop thinking he should have plus 65 pounds (29 kg) for that kind of frame.
The background music is very nostalgic😊
This is in my top 5 💯
As a longtime fan of this franchise, I kinda wish you went a little more in-depth into the themes that separate this series from it's contemporaries, but as a introduction to the story it's a pretty good vid.
Yea, I thought about it but a lot of people just like violence and less words
Great video
Finally! Someone is talking about Tough
Im definitely gonna give this a read. Should I read the prequel or can I immediately jump to the second part?
Sounds like the kind of martial art manga that I will like. I too view martial art as a means of self defense, and self control.
The Shootfighter Tekken anime was sick, some anime company should pick this series up and make it a full series. But do it in the style of the 90s miniseries, with minimal CGI and other modern crap.
Actually I might want to go check it out and rewatch it, it’s been a while.
If you love tough and Baki, check out teppu (female MMA). The ova series of tough is on RUclips ( shoot fighter tekken). Lastly, I love the added street fighter 3 soundtrack you added. Over all great video.
I owned a dvd copy of the anime series back in the days . It was called SHOOTFIGHER TEKKEN instead of the manga name TOUGH .
Tough and Garouden should have had a crossover...a game back in the PS2 era
I remember watching the ova/movie for this show a while back
I remember reading tough and karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru in middle school, and it helped me workout hard and also to start martial arts. Almost forgot about kenichi the mightiest disciple.
great video
Great pfp
I remember watching the ova of this when iwas a kid it was released in the US as shootfighter tekken
For those of you who read Manga and watch Anime.
There's an OVA Series titled "Tough: Shootfighter Tekken".
You just gained a new follower 😁
I’m grateful
@@terriblewonder same here🙏🏿 can't wait see more content from you
This manga is great after I finished the baki manga in the late 90's I read fist of the Northstar then kenichi on early 2000's looking for more I found kenichi on the 2010's then this gem of a manga tough now im on kengan ashura
Where has this Manga been. Im a martial artist and I love Baki and Chin mi and wouldn't mind expanding
W editing
i will definitely read this
Thank you so much
Another terrible wonder video, another great day ❤❤. I reccomend you read Rainbow and/or Yomawari sensei.
I remember reading the first couple of chapters for rainbow and stopping

@@plavuus3156 no it’s pretty good I love the relationship of the group and seeing it grow, I’ll pick it back up thanks for the reminder!
saruwatari, tetsuya is my favorite manga artists, tough, Riki-oh and kizu darake no Jinsei are all fun reads.
I would love to see this as an anime
So I want to start reading tough but there’s two. One from 1993 & the other from 2003. Does it matter which I start with? Thanks in advance
I actually watched a ova about the first part a long time ago it was 3 episodes. I read the first few chapters of tough, I need to start again
I watched the ova for this a long time aho
Does it have an underground tournament arc? I like Baki for that specific arc but everything else after or even before that is just a massive eye-roll to me.
It does
found tough after reading baki both are fantastic wish tough would get picked up by a studio for real. after tough found every hyper violent realistic mma style manga i could find....not enough. i hope that this genre gets more people interested so other artists with this style and passion will get to show their style.
That manga was popular in France in the late 90’s early 2000’s.
For ppl who dont know its also a anime of this called Shootfighter Tekken. Thats how i was introduced to this i never read the manga tho
Hey have you read Noritaka? It’s a fighting manga about a weakling learning Muay Thai but it’s also extremely funny. It’s like an Edgar Wright movies like Hot Fuzz that is a parody of an action movie but at the same time is also a good action movie.
Yea I’ve read it. The art style is super unique and funny
tough>baki,
Where can I find this Manga tough and its prequel. I gotta give it a read
What is the ideal reading order for this manga?
I read the first series, really enjoyed it.
i missed my last practice and havent been strecthing for the last week yikes gotta get my shit together
I need to read this after finishing Usogui
currently trying to read the prequal kou kou tekadden and the sequel to tough
well okay then , this looks like my next read
the street fighter 3 soundtrack goes so hard 🔥
Tough is one of the amazing manga that I've read
As an artist i appreciate more the unique an original art style of Baki i dont care much about the story lol
