Action classic! Very slick and tight screenplay, sure the characters dont have time to do much more then to fight but i think it did just what it intended to do....Umetsu has a long anime career before this one as you mentioned and Kite is where he perfected his animation skills and visual style.
I can't watch Solo Leveling cuz the protag is just reminding me of every single "it's a video game world" character ever. And I mean, after Attack on Titan, kinda hard to settle for less right now.
I'd be nice to see another anime directed by Umetsu. At least we have Wizard Barristers (I didn't like Liberator). I think he was always a better visionary than storyteller, and his neatly refined aesthetic very much proves the former. Just wish his Kiss and Cry project still happened.

There was Umetsu, Urushihara, Obari, Kawajiri, and so many others. The golden age of anime is under-respected and its architects under-revered.

If you liked Kite you can also try watching Mezzo Forte. Same type of story.
