This is a very beautiful, well-designed, -made and -finished watch, the one real-world downside for a non-collector/enthusiast being the low power reserve. The 36.5mm version’s reserve is 38 hours. The dials on the smaller one are based on a lighter blue background and are even more attractive, especially if the wearer is female and/or more feminine. Oris is fully committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has Oris Clubs round the world, whose members, who don’t have to be Oris customers, collect the plastic waste for the dials themselves! In a modern world, therefore, the Upcycle range gives a huge feeling of satisfaction to the wearer, unless they are a Calibre Snob. Six seconds of gain per day, as you point out, is COSC standard, so the care of regulation by Oris is the important factor. Long live the Green, Innovative and Independent Oris, now in its 120th year.
I do like the build quality of Oris and that dial I love, reminds me of something the humble telescope would have taken a photo of. It is a shame about the movement and thanks for pointing that out as I would never have known
I really enjoyed your review. You are spot on about the movement. It’s too much money for the base grade movement. A chronometer grade movement would make the watch much more desirable. I am glad though they did not put the caliber 400 in it and then ask 3k for it. It’s definitely not worth that. It’s still an Oris.

You are missing the point. This watch is a PHENOMENAL value. You get a watch with a dial that no one else has, from a completely unique material. The watch fit, build, and finish are rock solid and razor sharp. And the whole point of putting the 733 as opposed to the Cal 400 is so that MORE people can get the watch and promote Oris’ mission of eco sustainability. I think you need to reevaluate your priorities in what makes a good watch. Comparing this watch to a Steinhart is a joke. Those watches have 0 design originality, mediocre build quality (the clasps are awful), but sure, a decent movement. Damn, this was one of the worst watch reviews I’ve ever seen 😂 seems the watch went right over your head.

I give every watch I review a fair chance to meet my criteria of being "both excellent quality and excellent value at the respective price point". A high degree of case and bracelet finishing, with crisp angles, a beveled clasp, and a mix of brushing and high polishing. Excellent bracelet articulation, circular brushing on a ceramic bezel with fantastic rotating action, and a crown that is a breeze to operate. I could go on, but obviously Oris prioritized all of that stuff OVER the movement. Sure, other brands may prioritize the movement, but you can see a league of difference in every other aspect of the watches.

I still have 1st edition steinhart and the quality is very very good not even considering the price. I like this oris and if it had a better movement I’d consider it in a smaller 36.5mm version.
Excellent review, very thorough. And the particular piece you reviewed is just gorgeous - it's the one I'd want if I were to order one of these. So...is it a Different movement now?? NO it isn't...its just modified. In like manner, is Oris' movement a different movement?? NO it isn't...its just modified. Would it now cost more?? maybe...but not by much in my opinion.

Think you’ve missed the point of Oris as a brand here. Not being part of a big corporation means movements obviously will cost more for them hence the lower grade movements, however they tend to be well regulated out the box so you will most likely get better accuracy then a lot of swatch group stuff around a similar price despite the Oris having the worser movement. But with Oris you get a extremely high level of finishing truly worthy of the term luxury, and a unique design which is rare these days for a sub 2 grand diver. This is a case where the specs may not be amazing, but the watch is, where as with cheaper watches you get amazing specs, but far from a amazing watch.
I was just wondering if Oris can still get thinner ETA 2892 then put it in their aquis line.. 11mm thickness with 200m / 250m WR .. i think the thinner the better since it s a bit more desk, dressy diver 🙂. Thanks for the review, man.
See my video below regarding the La Joux-Perret LJP G-100 movement. I have suggested this to Rolf Studer, CEO of Oris; as an upgrade to the SW200-1 (773) they are currently using in the Aquis; as it has a 64 hour power reserve and is the same size as the SW200-1 so an easy upgrade. It is unlikely Oris would use the ETA 2892 as they have been using the SW200-1 for many years. Changing to the ETA 2892 would mean having to mold new cases for the Aquis which wouldn't be viable due to the increased production cost. I have the spare dollarydoos to buy watches in the multiple thousands but I just struggle to see the point. The search will continue, but it will need to impress me more than this one. I don’t like the dial anyway, if I want to look at recycled plastic I’ll go down to Bunnings 😂

Beautiful dial with a glorious looking iridescent sunburst, beautiful applied indices and numbers, exceptional legibility, great lume, double domed AR sapphire, domed sapphire bezel insert, beautiful brushed finish, beautiful looking bracelet with polished sides, great clasp even though I did swap it over for a ratchet clasp. Oh and it’s accurate to about 4 seconds a day. I’m even thinking of getting another one, maybe the black one, or maybe wait for their next release. I’m not a fan of simply buying Chinese stuff, but to avoid micro brands simply because they’re put together in China is a good way to greatly over pay for other brands. Not all Chinese stuff is rubbish.
@@anthonyonline4740 The RLG warranty is 2 years. Though if the movement packs up I would just get the local shop to put a new movement in. I do like a few of the big brand models but I just can’t justify paying out many thousands for them. 5k plus is a bit crazy. Besides do I want to be wearing a watch like that which at any time I could accidentally damage. 5k straight down the drain. If I bugger up a $650 watch I can just buy another one.

Look at how well seikos sell with their high prices, 750$ for a garbage +35 second movement, yet they are constantly sold out. Saying this movement isn't good value for 2.3k, I wonder what your opinion is on the hardlex seikos with even worse movement but only 50% less expensive.
Thank you for watching Matt. Yes, many collectors care about the movement used in a piece. Seiko is a popular brand; and they have now become poorer quality/value at their respective price points. For example; still using pressed metal clasps, and aluminium bezel inserts; when the industry standard is now solid milled clasps, and ceramic bezel inserts. Seiko fanboys buy their pieces regardless of the increased price point. Also the QC is poor on Seiko, from Seiko 5 to Prospex models; common issues such as misaligned chapter rings, and misaligned bezel inserts still persist. To answer your question; Seiko mid-tier collectors, are different to Oris mid-tier collectors. For the latter, a brand having Swiss heritage since 1904, and still being independently owned is important; regardless of the movement used. Having "Swiss made" on the dial is important to them. The reality is the 6R15 is equal quality, QC, accuracy, to the SW200-1. However the latter is more respected by collectors due to it being Swiss made, rather than Japan made. Regards, #WR4K
