Navy Gunner’s Mate - GM

  • It takes more than pulling a trigger to fire our weapons. In America’s Navy, we are the first and last line of defense; and that requires serious ammunition. As a Gunner’s Mate, that falls to you. Mount, stow, and secure all weaponry, repair and calibrate defense systems, maintain guided missile launching, rocket launchers, gun mounts and all other ordnance. If it shoots, it’s your responsibility. We don’t wake up hoping to engage with an enemy, but if that day comes, it’s up to you to make sure we’re ready to aim and fire. Learn more at bit.ly/2wo3rqi

    I remember a time on my deployment, I had a little pet bird I was nursing back to health that was exhausted and hurt. He made a little home on our 25mm gun platform one deck up from the 5 inch. One day we were doing pac fires and I realized a few minutes to late that he was too close to the cannon up on the 25mm. So I was sprinting out to him and right as I got there he looked up at me right as the 5 inch fired. I've never felt concussion like that through my body ever in my life, it was like my bones were vibrating out of my body, but even worse in slow motion I watched my little bird shudder and freak out as his heart stopped and he rolled to his back dead. I scooped him up and with the help of my friends on board we gave him a burial at sea and dumped him into the ocean. o7 little bird.

    GMs are the small arm weapons experts aboard ships, you’ll be dealing with 9mm, M4, M240, M2HB (M2A1), grenade launchers and various other small arms, you can also become 5 in or VLS tech if you so choose but our main job is to shoot and maintain small arms as well as train and qualify the crew for watch standing and crew served team. Not to mention we also deal with ATFP. Been a GM for a little over 6 years now and I truly believe this is one of the best rates of the navy. Highly recommend if you like to play with guns.

Early on in boot camp you’ll be asked if you know any other languages, which may affect the one you’re assigned.

    • @legion6049

      I enlisted as a GM. If you love guns then go GM, if you wanna handle bombs and heavy ordnance for aircraft then go AO.
      GM get to actually use much (not all) of the weapons that they maintain, AO loads and services aircraft weapons.

      @legion6049 4 года назад +2

      @@treyvonpoehler1068 Nice. More options are great. I got a high score as well but I still went GM just because it's something I like and I've always been a gun nut.
      At the end of the day just choose something that you really want to do and can do for at least 4-5 years.
      If you choose a rate for the wrong reasons you probably wont enjoy your time in the Navy.
      I recommend picking at least five jobs that you really like, that way when you get to MEPS you'll probably get at least one of them.
      Let me know how everything turns out, I'm interested in knowing what you go for.
      Good luck.

      Quite a few actually. A lot of mechanic jobs. I worked as a factory machine operator. We were a lot in charge of security with the MAs so. Security Officer. I had a few buddies become cops after getting out. Some just worked as armorers. Logistics inventory worker. We are always taking inventory on Ammunition. I currently work in Quality Assurance for an electronics manufacturer which requires some electronic test equipment experience along with blueprint reading. Sprinkler systems repair. All sorts of stuff. Maintenance mechanic. I almost went back to school to get a degree in electrical engineering.

    What are the hours like for GM's?

    • @anthonygallegos9838
      @anthonygallegos9838 4 года назад

      Depends. Sometimes it’s work on some guns and go home, sometimes you’re standing Duty Guns for 24 hours. What your ship needs from you will determine how much you work. In port that is. Being Deployed or underway is a whole different ball game

      waterhead001 not going to lie, it gets boring. You go to work, and stand watch. Caffeine will be your best friend, but to make up for it you will see cool places depending on what fleet you’re in. Sometimes you get to come home on time, sometimes you get extended and stay out at sea longer. As a GM you’ll run gun shoots to qualify your shipmates in Small Arms, and sometimes you get to do live fire exercises with other Countries
