Honestly, all things considered, Romesh sounds like a swell teacher. His ability to emphasise and understand his students is notable.

fr, once I saw him on a plane and asked for a pic with him towards the end of the flight, he was sitting like 9 rows ahead of me and waited till everyone got off at the end just so we could get a the picture
What romesh says at the end about challenging behaviour is genuinely the attitude I tried to go in to teaching with, unfortunately all upper management and teachers I worked under were career teachers who were all above 40 and simply wouldn't listen to me, or tried to bully me out of the job because the children liked me more. I got better results, had better working relationships with the children, they hated it, and wouldn't change. So I changed career.

Romesh sounds like he was an excellent teacher.
Very true. All kids need to be motivated to do well at school regardless of their ability. Obviously home life and environment plays a big part in that, but teachers do too. I used to work in international English language schools and always tried to empathise with the teenage/young adult students, but I was also lucky that most of them were highly motivated to improve their English skills to go to university, get a job where they needed a good English level etc. In secondary education a lot of kids might say what's the point of all this and need more guidance to find their motivation.
Haven’t listened to the pod yet but on the lines of the thumbnail I was locked in a cupboard on my first drama class cause my teacher thought I was being a knob…I then went on to get a degree in drama and acting and now work in television. Somehow the time in the drama room gulag inspired me
So happy to see this new setup!! Makes me so inspired to see how you guys keep evolving. If you guys hosted a live audience in future I'd definitely watch, along with many many other fans!

He sounds like a very good teacher! Had a sports teacher once at secondary school. Made us all stand in lines in the gym facing the wall for the whole day! Only stopped when 1 kid passed out!

From 1965 to 1971,I went to a 75% Working Class school, and the teachers were respected with an element of fear, as well. From what I knew of that area near Brixton and Peckham in those days, most children had 2 parents living together giving the family, emotional, practical, and financial support and as a consequence, we had only around 2% of pupils who weren;t interested in learning though it was an All Boys(mainly) working class Grammar School but The Labour Party ( "Friends Of The Working Class" ruined that opportunity and now the only kids who go to Grammar Schools have to be wealthy enough to live in the catchment area. GOOD OLD LABOUR...

Had a teacher that threw a chair at a student in music class. Had another that had a mental breakdown on school camp after students set the fire alarm off in middle of the night in a packed hostel.
I would have loved having Romesh as a teacher.

I once had a supply teacher who had the piss taken out of him throughout the lesson that eventually he raised his fist up to this one girl, sweat streaming down his face, threatening to punch her. His face was terrifying

The workplace is not what it was.
In around 1976 we had a younger Woman who would not stop talking and 3 of the guys locked her in the cupboard for an hour, while they went off to lunch.
It was actually pretty effective but as some moan about anything these days,I suppose they would think that was wrong.....
