MTV Made it look/sound like Irene left because of her Lyme disease, but that was far from the truth. She was unhappy with the camera crews and production. They encouraged the castrates to fight, and she was disgusted about how unreal the "Real World" was. They were basically a walking talking advertisement and she's the only one smart enough to figure it out. Even when she got slapped as she left, the camera crews did nothing but film it. She's pissed to this day they didn't do anything to stop Stephen from slapping her.
I know Irene is a sweetheart this isn't a knock at her in anyway but in th exploited confines of shit MTV's defense, she signed up for it she seen episodes knew what the show was about this was like the seventh season.

She didn’t deserve to get slapped, unfortunately I can also understand why Stephan reacted irrationally. From what I remember on the show, the two of them did get along and I feel like he had let his guard down with her and then all of a sudden she completely turned and humiliated him for the whole world to see. Regardless of if he was obvious or not, it was not easy even then to be out and for a person of color it’s three times as hard. I imagine that even he knew immediately after he did it that it was wrong, but she couldn’t let it go either and even went on comedy tours reminding people of it and at the reunion the whole cast went after him for it. It doesn’t make what he did right but she’s not exactly innocent either.
I remember when this first happened. My friend had recorded it on his VCR (that's like an old DVD player, kids) and we kept rewinding it over and over and over. We were in tears laughing. It's a shame MTV sucks so hard nowadays.
There’s a train going by in the background. Ive worked for that railroad since I was 18 and I remember being in jr high when the Seattle season aired. Years later, I had a guy commit suicide by letting my train run em over in that same spot of the Seattle house. Pier 70. I was 21 when it happened, the same age as Stephen when he slapped Irene. Crazy right. I still picture all those sequence of events I described every single time I pass pier 70. I’m 39 now
I've seen this episode on the real world, I feel sorry for what Irene is going through, As for Stephen out of the blue slapping Irene that was childishly insane disrespectful and Stephen needs to grow up and be a mature man, No matter what situation he's going through. There's a saying, "If You Want Respect, You Got To Earn It!!!" Stephen hasn't earn it yet.
Shut up. She outed a gay man in the 90s. That was hugely taboo. I'm not the biggest LGBTQWTF supporter, but what Irene did was despicable herself. Stop simping for women who are rude and deserving of a good bitch slap
My absolute favorite season of Real world. I would give anything to see this season in full again. This was when the Real World was about real people and this is such a trip back to the 90s. The early seasons were gold. Real world Seattle by far the best of the entire series for this scene alone
Funny because on the first episode when Lindsey asked if anyone was gay Irene was the first one in her confessional to say “oh I don’t think it’s appropriate to ask anyone if they are gay or lesbian I don’t believe in defining people on what there sexual preference is”and that’s exactly what she did even though he was absolutely wrong and he was pissed that she blew his whistle that was the 90s don’t ask don’t tell era people were embarrassed of themselves back then for having those feelings towards the opposite sex😒 my uncle may he R.I.P was gay and it never came out of his mouth but we all knew and just didn’t speak on it and his parents my grandparents were Christian my grandfather was a pastor so they were raised that if your gay you are going to hell😢 I had a girlfriend years later and we bonded and went to a gay bar and I seen him and another man getting along lol I’ll just say that and I guess even though we all knew I believe that was his way of letting me know without every saying the words I am gay 😢
I will never forget this episode. Even at my young age I knew he was gay. It was wrong for her to call him out, but it was definitely very wrong for him to slap her.
Man I remember watching this when it aired. I would've gotten out of that car and it would've been me and him all over that pier. AND I would have pressed charges. AND I would have sued MTV for allowing him to assault me,
Sure have, bitch. And the minute you got out the car and started fighting back, the self defense goes out of the window. You're not only a bitch, you're a dumb bitch
She was trying to do it in privacy away from the cameras and away from the rest of the house. He was petty for destroying her property and then assaulting her. That just proves how much truth was actually in what she was saying. Clearly he couldn't handle it so he found some way to lash out. He was trying to get under her skin but at every turn, she could care less until he finally hit her. Punk ass.
Ken Davis If he did this today in 2018 he will be arrested for assault especially in the Me-Too movement and there will be protests around MTV building. Since that Ray Rice video they take the domestic violence pretty seriously. This was all pre Me-Too movement stuff
I was thinking about this program the other day and the whole random thing when David suddenly had issues and was seeing the producer or something who wasn't even in the show and they had to get all deep. I think everyone that went on this show had some sort of issue. It was hilarious!
im wondering if anyone remembers the song that played during the final scene of the final episode of real world seattle while theyre at the airport..any help would be appreciated.
@REDIVY78 in the 90s, a lot of people were getting killed for all kinds of reasons, I lived the 90s , this was a good look into how my gen was, they were younger but yes, a good look into us. But still, its the real world, it already had it's time and drama, he knew what he was getting in to when he got on that show, so no excuses
As I recall there was this big controversy because Irene later said she was caused some kind of emotional damage by this slap and that Stephen should be thrown off the show for domestic violence towards her. Stephen said that he did not slap her so I think the producers of the show aired a special segment to get the facts straight.
So it's not right that he slapped that girl, even tho she was a lil "touched". I think he lost it because he confided in her that he was gay, prolly when they were cool...then she held on to it to just so she could out him publicly if he ever started trippin. He was prolly ashamed of his sexuality at the time and was so appalled that she put him on blast.
I was working a conference at the Moscone Center in SF... and saw Irene there... thought it was strange... but guess she was working... I wanted to go up to her and say she was right... but I was working as well...
If I remember correctly Irene and Steve were close in the beginning but I don't remember what happened. Irene had a breakdown and left the show. I'm not sure if she was acting but she had lime disease and just became really exhausted and broke down. It was a very strange season all around because they become so isolated because Seattle was basically harassing them and not letting them film whenever they left there house! I think they should have addressed that on the show because all of that isolation probably caused Steven to break down as well. He changed more than anyone during the filming of this show. It was obvious that he was breaking down as well as Irene. They should have shut down production and moved to a different state so they could have had a better season without being stuck in the house day and night. Seattle was really wanting them out!!!
Dude, they went out like every night what show did you watch. They had a all there yes there was some local haters more so than any other season but don't be fooled they went out. Stephen was fighting something inside and Irene didn't like the exploitation Real World endures on you.
Neal Damiano This was an article I read a long time ago. They were isolated and they stopped going out so much. When they did go out people would harass the crew and cast. But most likely and obviously Steven was dealing with his sexuality. He was in total denial he was gay and struggling. Irene was most likely exhausted and felt exploited. They were both a hot mess, and one of them was having an affair with a producer or something. lol
Freddie Grace I know all about it, buddy. I know David Burns personally I interviewed him many years ago when I worked for Reality TV Magazine. They still went out and about, believe me. Stephen was fighting his sexuality. Irene was a sweetheart she just couldn't take the exploitation!

My uncle was gay in in the 70s and 80s. I can't imagine how difficult it must of been having to hide his true feelings. Afraid of being ousted and the repercussions. I cant imagine what he went through. He died in the early 90s of AIDS around the same time Freddy Mercury did. He was an incredible person.
My man.
Re-watching this after American Dad's Jeff says his one true inspiration in life was "Stephen from the Real World, who had the courage to throw that one girl with Lyme Disease's teddy bear into the ocean."
-S.15/E.21- Fleabiscuit.
this was hilarious. it didn't look like he hurt her, but it seemed like he was really hurt and trying to get to her but failing
Exactly haha
He might have shared his sexuality with her in confidence and she betrayed him by outting him when their relationship soured. That's probably why he was hurt. Still no right for him to put his hands on her.
@@peanutjelly727 Someone theorized this online but in reality, it was just speculation and she was calling him out because he knew how deeply closeted he was. People were more akin to be in complete denial back then.
I remember that season I was 13, I knew that Stephen was gay from the start...lol and the fact that he thought it was ok to slap her was ridiculous on top of that he lied to them and said that he didnt and that is when they showed the cast mates the video. Great season!
She kind of asked for it
They should have kicked him off for that b1tch a$$ move.
@@willypete1897 by calling a gay man...gay? Because he is gay...
@@SisterKnight is it her job to announce that to the world before he does? No.
@@SisterKnight nah
She got slapped but he got owned for life!
And dude came out like 10 years later lmao she called it
He sold his own ass too.
Hi Irene
@@NealDamianoThis illogocal comment bagging on Irene came from a black guy. Shocking.
This is the season that started the whole reality TV craze. The ratings from this season went through the roof. Lol!!!!
I think this helped Stephen come out
Yes, but wasn't he arrested about 3 years ago for prostitution?
and also proved how much of ahole he is
Rob Heathers yikes 😂😂💀
He looks like the dude Shawn Wayans inspired his Scary Movie character off
... that slap was weak since it came out lol. Always thought this was waayyy over hyped
Crazy how American Dad referenced this exact scene.
That's what brought me here. Thank you.
I don't feel so stupid for being here now.
On the fleabiscuit episode right? I caught that too
Its on Adult Swim right now!!!!!
The only reason I'm here lol
Funny how she really called his tea! Lol we'll that's why you take people's power by putting your own business out there!
💯🗣️💬📣🎯🔥👏👆👍☝️ how he ran after the cab, 😭😭😆😅🤣😂💀💀
Funny how she outed him in an extremely homophobic era? Ya, that’s hilarious, let’s bring that trash energy back.
I remember this! He was pissed she told the truth!😂🤣
Nowadays that isn't even an insult ...words don't hurt people anymore
0:26 "You're Right Semen" 0:30 "Bye Semen" 0:43 "Semen I Left Everybody Gifts"
He was such a punk for that. Because he couldn't accept who he was, he thought it was ok to destroy her property and slap her?
hey, men have issues too.
Flowerpwr88 hey dumbass, she had no right to out him
I remember watching this omg I looked at the date and what the hell I was 10 years old watching this... my favorite shows tho I guess my mom let me LOL
Lol funny thing is I thought he was gay before she said it lol. Now the whole butch slap makes sense
Irene told the truth.
She still a bitch, tho.
Yup and then got treated with Disgusting violence
It was disgusting on both their parts. To out a person on national tv when they are not ready to face their own truth was horrible. Stephen slapping Irene was horrible. The MTV producers airing all of this was horrible. This, to me, is when TRW jumped the shark and devolved into the typical trash reality shows we see today.
@@SquishyGrayMatter Oh shut up. She got what she deserved and you would too if you said crap like that in real life and not on social media. Sit down. Dum dum.
@@pam0626 How did she out him? He never admitted to her he was gay. She just told him he was and stop denying it which anyone with eyes could already tell. Not like she revealed some big secret about him.
20 years later and this sit is still hilarious, lmaoooo,
Yea it is.
If you think fuck boys are funny it is
I remember it like it happened yesterday
And she was right, he came out as gay.
right, 💯👏👌☝️👍🗣️💬😭😭😅🤣😂😆💀💀☠️☠️ and the way he chased after her cab, 😭😭💀💀
Hahahahaha if your a man don’t hit women. That simple.
I remember when this first happened. My friend had recorded it on his VCR (that's like an old DVD player, kids) and we kept rewinding it over and over and over. We were in tears laughing. It's a shame MTV sucks so hard nowadays.
Kids don't even know what DVD players are anymore.
This is when the Real World was GOOD, Lately it's all been a bunch of HORSESHIT!!!
lately? as in the past TWO DECADES!!?
and the vma's, too,
Right
its ben horseshit for over 20 years
The only one I feel for is the Dog 'RIP'
it was a bear
There’s a train going by in the background. Ive worked for that railroad since I was 18 and I remember being in jr high when the Seattle season aired. Years later, I had a guy commit suicide by letting my train run em over in that same spot of the Seattle house. Pier 70. I was 21 when it happened, the same age as Stephen when he slapped Irene. Crazy right. I still picture all those sequence of events I described every single time I pass pier 70.
I’m 39 now
It is funny when she calls him to blow his head away! Priceless
15 year later , man I remember this episode.
I knew she was right lol I was like 16 years old and and I knew she was right !!! Everyone did except him thats so sad
He got butt hurt lmao big baby
Remember watching this as a kid in my elementary days.
yeah i remember this. funny thing is I work with Irene's uncle he says she still gets people coming up to her and commenting about this slap this slap
I love how Irene just looks away from Stephen like she doesent care good job Irene
The sissy slap heard round the world. Oh, he lied about being Jewish. He probably meant "shrewish."
Stephen came out in 2009😅
How could she out Stephen? Stephen EVERYONE KNEW YOU WERE GAY!
AND I would have sued MTV for allowing him to assault me,
Bitch, please.. the minute you put your hands on him, you'd have been liable too... you wouldn't have gotten a dime.
Sure have, bitch. And the minute you got out the car and started fighting back, the self defense goes out of the window. You're not only a bitch, you're a dumb bitch
Okay, bitch. Have a great day.
Jessica Rodriguez You only said to fuck off because you lost the argument. smh
Another sue-happy bitch.
I was in middle school watching this! That is crazy. 😂 ♥️
Welcome to those after will smacked up Chris Rock
I remember this season. That Irene girl was the one with Lyme Disease.
Omg I remember watching this at like 14 and instantly knew Stephan was gay.
Yes, he did come out during a RW reunion in 2008.. Irene called it..
everyone knew, but it wasn't her place to out him like that.
So you're saying she didn't know there was a cameraman right there? Never mind the question of whether she needed to say this at all.
@AbramBergstrom Dude i 100% agree with that. Pity no 1 sells DVDs of this series. let alone any classic road rules and real world.
I was thinking about this program the other day and the whole random thing when David suddenly had issues and was seeing the producer or something who wasn't even in the show and they had to get all deep. I think everyone that went on this show had some sort of issue. It was hilarious!
Oh yeah. "I LOVE YOU! IT KILLS ME!" That was iconic too. So intense. I had such a crush on David back then.
im wondering if anyone remembers the song that played during the final scene of the final episode of real world seattle while theyre at the airport..any help would be appreciated.
A straight man would've never reacted that way.......
"You think I'm gay?! Would a gay man do *this*?!"
Yes. Yes on both accounts.
Outing someone on tv who isn’t out is pretty low doesn’t matter if everyone thinks they “know” he’s gay.
She didn't out him. At the time it was more of an accusation . He outed himself with his reaction.
Exactly, and it was unwarranted.
Where’s the Video of C.T and I forget the other person name approach Stephen for Slapping Her. I think it was the Real World Awards
He had an anger problem.....and dealt with it after the incident!!!!
I loved irene foreal
He should have just threw the dog and went back inside - Irene made herself look pretty bad by outing him
He was mad because she called him out, truth hurts
But it wasn’t her place to out him, even in the late 90s people were getting killed or beat up just because they were gay
LMFAOOOOO!!!!!!! Its not funny he hit her... its how he did it... ran allll that way... stopped the whip for that love tap! 😭😭😭
If you slow down the video, you’ll see that at 1:00 she looks at the camera and smiles 😂😂😂 savage
12 years later Irene is still mad about this one incident.. I miss old MTV

American dad season 13 episode 20 brought me here
He was just mad because she outed his ass 😂
That's a good reason
I wanted to go up to her and say she was right... but I was working as well...
lol
Freddie Grace Seattle was giving them shit because it was the tail end of the grunge scene and the pseudo hipsters didn't like Real World being there.
+Neal Damiano The funny thing is The Real World was so innocent then compared to now!
I remember being like 11 or 12 and that was the funniest crap. We talked about it for WEEKS.
Iconic moment. Tmz would have had a field day with this.
