- Competitors in the traditional Scottish Sword dance competitions during the 2018 Braemar Gathering Highland Games in Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
The Sword Dance or 'Ghillie Callum' is an ancient dance of war of the Scottish Gael, said to date back to King Malcolm Canmore (Shakespear’s MacBeth). Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland, fought a battle near Dunsinane against one of Macbeth’s chiefs in 1054 and either he or a Celtic Price then danced over the crossed swords in victory. However, it is also said that the Sword Dance was danced by warriors prior to battle.
My wife is a former Sword Dancer.
Seeing her dance like this at 57 years old is a sight to behold.
My greatest respect to you all, at any age!
I danced this at school as a child... I adored it!

You are viewing a culture almost lost
Aye cause of the fricken English
@@alexahenderson1044 No, because of Highland Scots who are not protecting their own culture and who refuse to learn and speak Gaidhlig! Tha Gaidhlig againn is bruidhnidh sinn i!
@@pulchralutetia While it's true that there was deference to English as the language of commerce, the Education (Scotland) Act 1872, took out Gàidhlig education in schools and students were punished for speaking it. It was a multi-factor death really, but not something we cannae fight! Cuideachd, tha beagan Gàidhlig agam is bruidhnidh mi i (tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gàidhlig, latha-eigin bidh mi fileanta) :D
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
79. Winner winner, I'd shout her a chicken dinner.
Where are the swords?
On the ground crossed. They dance over them. Men would perform before battle and if they kicked a sword it symbolized death in battle.
@@raed3240 Thanka
See those big hilt things? Yeah that’s swords.
@@MsPrincessSparkle1 Are you gay?
I think I missed the sword part
The two swords laying on the ground.
ok but when do they use it?@@kristenslice561
@@daveraddy3119Before the dance. The girls had just got back from a battle and were having a wee dance to celebrate.
This is a very old tradition. Women just didn’t use swords as a rule. This tradition is worth doin some research on. I’m gonna make you work for the answer 😁
😂 You would
Another thing that someone with OCD invented
Probably lol, but it does have practical uses. Good footwork is foundation for almost are athletic activities and these types of dances were great ways to spread that through the population
Hilarious
Lord 😂😂 compare this to a Cretan Greek dance 😂😂😂😂 this looks like a clown show.
This is an extremely difficult and physically demanding dance. All that jumping around on tiptoes and the steps need to be done perfectly with the back completely stiff.
These kids aren't too experienced just yet. When you get to a higher level like nationals or worlds it'll get harder and requires lots of stamina and control.
"Shut up", dude...
@@benjohnston9654 you will shut up the moment you see the Cretan dance 😂 instead of this
They are two VERY different styles of dance, it isn’t a competition between them.
God damn that fkin instrument is annoying.
Music to my ears - why didn't you just click off?
