Longlegs isn't a movie, its a documentary about what Nic Cage does on his Sundays off.
Kiernan Shipka steals the show with a 2 minute cameo.
That dialogue just made me laugh. Once the supernatural stuff started, I just found it silly
longlegs was nightmarish, totally deranged, and deeply unsettling -- i loved it! 👹
My friend presented this movie as "Silence of the Lambs" meets David Lynch.
Oh? Now I'm really intrigued, as I love both those things!
That sounds FANTASTIC
Get better friends.
It was so mediocre and tedious. Awful just awful.
@@biggiebaby3541 Considering my future career beyond retirement might depend on him, I'll refrain from final judgement. I'll keep it under advisement still...
My most favorite horror show this year is the Acolyte. That dialogues and that level of acting creeps the fuck out of me.
Saw it this week with my horror-obsessed 16-year-old daughter. We both really liked it and have talked about it a lot since. I recommend.
This is more Twin Peaks than Silence of the Lambs and it's the best Twin Peaks thing in 33 years. Also love the Exorcist inspired superimposed faces on the cloaks.
Saw it last night in a packed theater. Absolutely loved it.
Just saw this and loved it
I thought it was alright. It didn't really wrap up everything it introduced in a satisfying way, and there were instances of Harker not doing things that seemed like obvious choices for any FBI agent. For example, not following up on salient points during interrogations or not calling for backup.
Okay, now I'm curious. When I saw the trailer and it dropped the whole, "Modern Day Silence of the Lambs," I rolled my eyes because the trailer gives me nothing that says "Silence of the Lambs."
I guess the trailer is very accurate in depicting this movie "absolutely nothing alike of Silence of the Lambs"... :DDDD
(like comparing chocolate to shyte)
his legs weren’t even that long. 6/10.
Perfect comment. Thanks for the chuckle.
My biggest gripe too!
Lol
I don't know what to believe now? I've heard from other people saying don't believe the hype!
I will give the contrarian view. It was meh. Wasn't a fan. Not bad but not good. The ending doesn't deliver a payoff.
Overhyped doesn’t even begin to describe it. I went in thinking this movie was going to be incredible or something and nearly walked out halfway in because of how bad it is. I think modern audiences conflate good production values and familiar aesthetics to being a “good movie”. It’s literally trash if you are looking at it from a substance and story point of view.
@@Experiment_6_2_6 this, I prefer late night with the devil. Long legs is great when it's creepy and the atmosphere but for me felt like Nic Cage was not much in the movie and the reveal was meh for me. I would at least watch it but dont go in super hyped.
So overhyped!
Absolute waste of time. It's not creepy. The main character appears to have Asperger's or something similar. She can't make eye contact with anyone - which would be a HUGE problem as an FBI agent. The whole plot has to be explained by 2 huge chunks of character exposition which is a no no. The prosthetics covering Nic Cage's face are silly. It would have been way more impactful if he looked like an every day Joe. Huge leaps in logic that made no sense. It's filled with horror tropes done better in other movies. 1/10.
The term you're looking for Chris is Psychological Thriller which can be far more frightening than straight monster flick. If done right you think about it for days. If it's done pitch perfect it haunts your thoughts for years.
I thought the marketing made it clear it was a Thriller that would leave you guessing not a monster movie but that's just me.
This movies marketing was A+++.
With that out of the way, i didnt find as acary as people were saying, but the tone was well done and the sound was great when it came to the kills. Definitely one of the better serial killer movies I've seen in recent memory.
Perhaps these movies are better set in previous decades because how would a writer go about writing a serial killer character in todays age of cctv everywhere, google, and more safety awareness among people (especially women).
Serial killer in an hot air balloon? They drop a hook on a rope, for 2hrs trying to hook a victim like its a bad claw machine. Off camera you hear Shit, dammit GET ON THE HOOK!
If its super atmospheric, done well, creepy, BUT dumb shit happens ( like people mysteriously figure things out OR ( even worse) dont do the obvious thing youd be able to do ) - the atmosphere doesn't help me.
RMB also had some issues with the third act, but he said it was worth seeing.
Damn, thought this was about spiders
There’s some video of snakes in it but no spiders. It is never made clear why the guy calls himself Longlegs as best as I can remember.
I saw a remastered version of SE7EN yesterday and a few hours later this piece of shyte of a "movie"...damn it was a traumatic experience...remembering how movies were, and how they are now... :((
I'm intrigued. Looking forward to it.
Set in the early 90s, just like Silence of the Lambs
Well technically that was set in the 1980's but was made in the 90's. It's just that the movie intentionally is vague about what year it is unlike the book.
@@ABoyandHisDog-pd3lb I know the novel was written in the 80s, but always assumed the movie was set in the year it was shot, which I guess was 1990 since it came out in early 1991.
This movie looks almost too vexing for me to attempt, despite the presence of Cage, who is one of the best actors. However, based on your assessment, I am super tempted.
My sister said good things so I might watch it now ty 4 the recommen Chris and much love and respect. I'm cg through and through but I still appreciate the nerdrotics with integrity. cheers
Cage plays more of the Buffalo Bill character from Silence of the Lambs
If that's the best, well, you need to see more...
So far the marketing has been fabulous. Each clip showing just a little more but in a way that's meant to make you say "what? OMG!what?"
Not "thanks for giving me the cliff notes . Now I don't need to see the movie "
If that kind of brilliance is in the movie itself it will be worth every penny.
I think the marketing did this film a disservice.
I’m kind of embarrassed for recommending this to friends that enjoy more mainstream films. Hopefully I can catch them and stop them before they see it.
It’s not a bad film but definitely not for everyone , I would argue it’s more for film buffs and critics than mainstream movie goers. I also think there was a lot of wasted potential to include things and make the story a bit more complete. There were many vague things that were introduced that weren’t touched on in any detail as well.
Longlegs movie….amazing!
I couldn't move in my seat because I fell asleep.
How can this be classified as a horror movie? It was more like a thriller/drama.
The trailer was terrible. I set it up as a terrifying movie. It wasn't scary at all, just atmospheric.
Perkins is a talented director, but this fell flat.
I loved it. Feels 100% like a loose sequel to The Blackcoat's Daughter, which is also excellent. Equal
parts style and substance. All four actors crushed it. Amazing sound design. Cinematography to die for. Perkins is formally on my list of must-see directors.
Oz Perkins, son of Anthony Perkins (he played Norman Bates in "Phyco") directed this movie.
I saw the trailer for this a few weeks back and it looks AMAZING!
But yeah right off the bat it was clearly giving off the Silence of the Lambs vibes.
Medium Legs.... 7/10⭐️'s
I saw a preview for this movie and I thought the title was a play on the novel "Daddy Longlegs"
I went into this without any knowledge, I thought it was great, classic Cage, very deranged…
The hype for this film is insane… it wasn’t even scary just eerie at best
Great review! You were on 666 'likes' when I wrote this. 😈
I just got out of this - it's shot well and I liked the overall tone and early stages of the investigation, but for me it really starts to fall apart the longer it goes on. Really disliked the exposition dump. Really disliked the ending. Overall not good.
I liked it
Is Lee harker any relation to Jonathon?
Silence of the Lambs meets Carrie with repetitive shots from previous Perkins movie The Blackcoats Daughter. Disappointing film, wanted to love it.
My wife and I saw this last night. It was so quiet in the theater that the guy next to her glared at me when my bag of Reeses Pieces was too loud.
This movie was just meh. I could see where it was going half way through the movie. No way does this compare to Silence of the Lambs. The ending was just bad. 5/10
I didn't love it, but it was pretty good. It would be much better if people weren't comparing it to one of the greatest movies of all time, which it isn't.
Remember Millennium with Lance Henriksen from Chris Carter in the late 90’s? Psychic FBI agent? This movie is just an episode of that show expanded to 101 minutes with more family shit. That show was so ahead of its time it’s not even funny. Perkins even names his agent “ Carter” for shit’s sake. Oz totally just ripped off the show or is paying homage without stating it hands fucken down dudes!
Her last name is Harker not Carter. You actually see it written down at one point because it becomes a plot point.
Not her name, Blair Underwood’s agent is named Agent Carter her boss!
Thought the movie was mostly trivial and rudimentary for the most part I think (especially with all the so-called decoding and puzzle solving). The tone, atmosphere and uneasiness of the movie was on point for sure but I think it depended too much on that rather than an actual intelligent and riveting script. Nic Cage was just Nic Cage for the most part; few times I thought he was creepy and other times I just laughed because Nic Cage lol. Wish I was into it more.
I just wasn’t blown away by it. Harker’s heavy breathing during intense scenes was irritating and took me out of it, I felt Cage’s performance was too cartoonish, and the resolution was just unsatisfying. A+ for the music…
Disagree re: the trailer. This has been marketed brilliantly. The "that's not my daughter" bit here on YT; A+. Not the biggest horror fan you'll ever meet but this intrigues Us.
I just heard about this last week when Badger and I watched it on his show. I’m definitely looking forward to this one just for something different but also good lol.
Unfortunately, Longlegs soon reveals that it has more style than substance. Perkins knows how to create disturbing atmospheres and shocking images, but these are mostly there to camouflage a fairly banal plot that isn't all that original.. What's left is a well-staged dark atmosphere... But that's not enough to erase the impression of déjà-vu.
I agree. There was something unsatisfying about the third act. But yet, the film stayed with me. I feel like the dolls and Longlegs were competing with each other too. Their impact should have been separated. I fixed the ending in my head on the drive home. 😂
Exactly.
i like weirder, dark kind of movies ala lynch (eraserhead, even) but am generally not a fan of super anxious, jump-scare sort of horror films. getting through midsommar was a struggle for me, for instance. will i be okay with this film or should i skip it?
Only one jump scare that I can remember really. I didn’t think it was terribly good though it had a lot of good parts. Just sort of fell apart for me. Don’t watch many horror movies so I can’t say more than that unfortunately
The movie is slow burn horror/dark thriller. There isn't any jump scares.
Seeing it Tuesday, I’m very happy to see that Gore likes it. I also only listened to 11 seconds of this video to avoid spoilers 😅
lol I just got out of it I loved it!
It’s shot well and is better than most horror movies these days, but that’s a low bar lol. It’s good, but it isn’t scary and it’s by no means one of the greatest horror films ever.
Your description sounds awful then?
@@Doggieworld3Show It is pretty accurate. Cage gives a great spooky performance, but he’s not in the film much. It is very well shot with some interesting choices early on. It has a lot of weak points and asked for more of a suspension of disbelief than I could give it though. Not a waste of time but not particularly good either.
@@donkeysaurusrex7881 this was a total and complete waste of time and money. I wasn't scared at all. every jump scare was predictable, and the plotting was off the charts bad. The marketing is to be studied, though. The marketing was aces.
@@SereneBobcatExactly, the marketing was amazing and this film had so much potential. I was really let down, but I learned a valuable lesson and that it to never trust marketing again. I’ll just have to resort to user reviews from now on because there was no indication that film would’ve been disappointed or lack luster.
Again , not bad , but definitely not as good as I had hoped.
There are people who loved this movie and some who hated it. I am not interested in, but it’s a very divisive film. Some hated the supernatural element.
I didn’t hate it, but it just became a big ask because not only was there supernatural stuff but also totems and hollow metal balls that did something somehow. Honestly, the supernatural part was the least unsatisfying part because you don’t expect it to have to make sense whereas some of the other stuff going on is the sort of thing you want s real explanation for.
Happy pre-birthday Lee!
Glad there's still great films in the theater for competent cinema goers who still have an attention span. Unsettling film. Cage unique as always.
Disagree strongly about the trailer being bad. It was the trailer that made go to the cinema for the first time this year.
This film is as much about tone and a sense of dread than it is about the plot. The trailer gives you just enough to peak your curiosity and give a taste of the films tone while still maintaining a sense of mystery. You know there’s a killer, a mystery and an FBI agent on the hunt. What more would you want to see without ruining the mystery of seeing the film for the first time?
You emphasise how important that mystery is to the film in your review, by emphasising how you didn’t want to spoil anything.
I hate trailers that feel they have to summarise the plot and show you all the major beats of a story.
Regardless of that, completely agree with your review. A great original horror film. Genuinely creepy and atmospheric.
I think this was supposed to be a horror parody but someone forgot to tell the director.
You know how in Scooby Doo the monster is always the one character with a speaking role that isn’t part of the gang. Yeah, it is sort of like that.
@@donkeysaurusrex7881 I've got a worse example The Bone Collector less than 15min after the start I already knew who the killer was and since I noticed that trope you mention it ruined 99% of the movies, I also instantly know how bad a critic is (including most successful youtube critics and friends of film threat) when they say "why are those useless characters in the movie" without those useless characters it measn with 100 perc confidence everyone you see is important it thus destroys all thrillers
I'm glad you liked it. I found it very underwhelming and unfulfilling. It's one of those movies where it doesn't do one thing terribly wrong, but there are a bunch of nitpicks where another one piled on top nearly becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Terrifier3 could steal the crown for best horror movie of the year? Come on, Frank Gore! It’s a scary clown movie (I think).
Chris can have such odd takes. His mention of the awful trailer is wrong. The trailers are the very reason this was the smash hit it became. The trailers gave the creepy vibe without giving away the movie. It was a masterclass in how to present a movie that draws in an audience.
The story as a whole was pretty dumb and really predictable. Great cinematography and acting though. Definitely worth watching and I'll probably get the 4k HDR for the OLED.
RLM did a review on this.
It's funny how Chris mentions that this has a 90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes when the audience score is 69%. Rotten Tomatoes doesn't matter until it can be used to validate your opinion.
Calm down there brother it’s just movies
@BobBill-g1q This isn't a movie that warrants RT or critics to boost the score. The audience score isn't abysmal either. You're reaching man
That audience score seems about right though I’d say 59% would be too. Somewhere in that range.
I saw this over the weekend and was incredible....loved it. Just a great film with an insane ending.
Meh... "One of my favorite horror movies THIS YEAR" is not that big of a statement, honestly. If you had mentioned "the last 5 years" or "a decade," then we'd be talking...
To me, this is one of my favorite horror movies of the decade.
I'm still on the fence.... 🤔 I'll wait till the marketing hype is down.
I don't trust hollyweird anymore.
The Terrifier franchise is one of the worst I've ever watched......
Horror movies this Year have been crap so the bar was low to be best
I guess people are blown away nowadays with familiar ground movies that lack innovation... Hard Pass.
Unfortunately, Longlegs never gets off the ground. 👎🏽 Another A24-style "high brow" horror that falls completely flat. Don't fall victim to the bizarre 90% RT critic hype on this one. Silence of the Lambs this aint.
It was way overhyped. The makeup on Cage was terrible (as in it looked fake) and it was so silly. Once the supernatural stuff starts in Act 3, I was totally out.
Oh, and the plot having to be explained via monologue by Harker’s mom telling a story is super weak. If you can’t show so you have to tell, you messed up.
This movie is a snooze fest and it’s an insult to compare it to Silence of the lambs
Tone and atmosphere wise it's a good movie narrative wise it's not
I thought it was decent but nothing special.
All the criticism is for the most important part of the story. The setup is awesome, the delivery is awful. Sounds like they fumbled the end.
Worst movie of the year for me.
As hilarious as Nicholas Cage might be.
Girlboss FBI Agent ****yawn****
She ends up looking rather stupid by the end though pretty much all the protagonists do in one way or the other.
