Honestly, some of the people in the comments are making fun of him or complaining, I’m just happy he’s having fun, every second of this, he has a smile on his face. Just happy as can be! Kudos to you man!
Man, I sooooo happy to see that I`m not the only one struggeling hard in a single. ;) I had been rowing previously (5 years ago) in a 4x but stopped and went back into rowing three weeks ago and my coach threw me in a Coastal single the first few sessions and today into an actual single pretty much like yours. But in contrast to you, I was scared to death and almost peed my pants for the first 10min before it got slightly better. So funny that I came across your video today. Brighten my mood tremendously and I hope you are sticking with rowing. The fun in your voice at least made it look like you are having a lot of fun.
I'm so thankful I have this sport, and now a year later I've gotten so much better and I continue learning more! I hope you're still rowing and getting more comfortable in the single!
Brings back such great memories! I flipped my single quite a few times when I was starting out on the canal in Milan (naviglio). There are a lot of tourists in that area and they of course get their phones out and start recording as you're trying to get back into the boat. You're on YT within the hour. But love the way this fella just keeps smiling - great attitude. Keep it up and it will all start coming together.
Thank you!! I was so glad I got to row it, and with my coaches helping me, in only two weeks I got the technique *somewhat* down and placed 5th in the Florida state race at Nathan Benderson Park!! Such an incredible sport!
This was ugly, but fun to watch. A really nice save there near the middle. I’ve flipped just once because my oar lock was undone. But I’ve had plenty of skid mark moments. They make you feel alive.
Most amusing video I've watched for ages thanks! Well done for your good humour. I'm a cyclist and I guess the closest for me would trying to ride while drunk!
I thought he did great - rowing is an incredibly difficult sport. I've been rowing over 40 years and you never "get it" - always things and combinations of things to work on. He had several very nice strokes. Stay with it you're doing great!
Thank you so much! Rowing is definitely a sport that you're constantly trying to improve on and that's something I keep trying to do to this today. I have definitely come a long way and have a long way to go.
A backwing, is when the rest rigger (if thats the correct English word) in this case the rigger is a wing, which means that the rigger is a single piece. So the wing is placed behind of the tower. There are also front wing, and three/two point riggers @@williamrobinson4265
So I have not done a single, as I am currently in a college that does all sweep rowing. I sculled a Quad over the summer, because local rec team was cheap to join and got me my water time I needed, and man that compared to a 4 is heaven! But I've basically done 4, quad, and 8... I'm on my last year of eligibility, so i'll be done after this year. Maybe this summer I'll get in a single. Only problem is our rec team isn't in a nice lake. We're in a river that's an active shipping channel (albeit, a part that's under used and sheltered by an island). But It'd be cool to learn and take a single up stream on the same river and put it in further up. It's a nice long stretch where people tube and kayak.
That sounds amazing! I've definitely gotten better with rowing the single since my first time... Thankfully!! And it is probably my top boat. The feeling of being completely in control once you learn the technique and balance is like nothing else, and I'm sure that would be great rowing up stream!
Oh dear - we have all been for a bath or two over the years. I remember finding out how quick release my quick release riggers were when they were not not locked on properly - SPLASH! Dude I think is trying to run before he can walk - shorter stroke particularly at the start, crisp even exits from the water, hands, hands , hands. And never ever let go of the blades - they are your stabilisers and supports. Needs to work on the technique and building up on the strokes over time.
I loved this POV, thank you! 😂 I'm a Masters newbie (8 months in) and after my 2nd time out in a single, Coach decided that's where I belong. Which terrifies me. I want to be back in a stable boat! haha (that same outing I managed to stay upright the entire time... until I got to the dock. Oof!)
I must say, after rowing in a single for a while now, there's definitely something beautiful about learning the balance and technique! (Even though I do agree that other boats are much more stable 😂) But I'm glad you started rowing and I'm wishing you the best in your journey!
I do! I made a video a week ago after a year of rowing and I plan to make more! I've progressed a lot since a year ago when this video was made and I'm so happy with all the progress! I wish you all the best!! Rowing is an amazing sport and I hope you click with it!
as someone who did completely fine in fours and eights but suddenly couldn’t tell ass from scull handle and flipped 6 times on the first day in a single, really impressive how many times he could save it.
It is very advisable when starting as a newby…….to take very tiny strokes at first and build up gradually (get an experienced coach as well right from the start) also it’s better for the expensive equipment!!
As a J14 rower who hasn’t yet rowed in a single (so I suppose this comment is kinda useless) , I think you actually did really well, even if you fell in, you looked happy. You will get better with the technique and being more confident in a single etc with time so at this stage just have fun 😃
I had a state level race in two weeks at the time and I needed to learn the single fast, and that was the boat I raced on. Worked out in the end with a 5th place finish! Super fun rowing it now when I'm comfortable enough to know I won't almost flip every stroke! Haha
All that gear but no idea how to use it. You should start in a less competitive boat since they are often more forgiving than the 100% carbon with backwing racing shells.
I definitely agree, the only thing is I was supposed to race that boat at states in just a couple weeks so I had to really quickly learn! But it all worked out in the end!
Honestly, some of the people in the comments are making fun of him or complaining, I’m just happy he’s having fun, every second of this, he has a smile on his face. Just happy as can be! Kudos to you man!

Really, a testament to just how hard it is to actually flip a single.
I'm actually surprised he didn't flip that at several points - never let go of your blades and always keep the hands level
Bro let go of the port oar and just laid on the gunnel, and I'm surprised that worked as well as it did.@@TerryTheTetrach
One of my favorite things to do is teach newbies how to row. So entertaining! Most all that I have let try my boat don't do anywhere near this well...

Me freaking out because the 8 is tipping a bit absolutely scared out of my gord I'm gonna get dunked.

How were you allowed to use such good equipment for your first outing?
who cares
Probably because there’s so much open water so they’re unlikely to crash

To see how fast he flips.@@Dorenda
Those are some great sculling strokes!

Keep those hands together on that table top lol!
I remember that feeling of instability. I just got my first single this weekend, wish me luck.....
Oh yeah good luck! You'll have fun, once I got that technique down it became one of my most favorable boats to row in the team!!
bro why he rowing a backwing and skinnies then
Great job! I enjoyed this very much. Great you learned to scull in warm weather. I learned in winter of all times!
Oh, I don't know what I'd do if I flipped all those times in freezing cold water... That would've been challenging!
Its bluds first time in a single and he uses a backwing, nice
I guess I'll never know the difference, it's the only single I've ever rowed to this day.
whats a blackwing if I may assk? I tried googling but cant find answer

This boosted my self-esteem so much seeing someone freaking out over the same thing I did
"Why's my oar like that?" I felt that heavily
Wonderful rowing! Youll get there one day! The international isnt the easiest single in our BH to row!
Too funny. That looks like a yard sale on t( water after flipping. He’s having a blast!
Everything decided to go for a swim... Including me!
We have all been there :) love the video
have u got more rowing vids? Trying out rowing for the first time and this gave me a realistic idea of what it might be like! 😁😆

Reminds of when I first got in a sculling boat and fell out the other side. Happy days.
You only have one first time, it was a lot of fun!!

At least we both probably got pretty good at getting back in the boat after all our flips!

Yeah you are very much so right... I learned very fast that rowing in a single needs a lot of grace 😂
This is so funny:) but good job Nic it was your first time in a single😆
I just did it for the first and second time this week, trick is to keep your hands together. I didnt capsise
Definitely! It took me a while longer to figure it out but eventually I learned how important that is!!

You're 100% right, I had the best time out there in the single... Even if it meant going for a swim a couple times 😆
Brother i have an honest question
How in the hell you saved it so many times? If i was in your place i would have fallen in.
For real I can't tell you, the first thing the coach told me was "never let go of the oars." I didn't listen and somehow it worked the first time! 🤣
Looks to me like your oar locks were on the wrong side
the squeak lol 0:25
tip here. when coming up and down the slide. make sure to have ur knees together vertical
or vertical*
have you been sculling or sweeping
Both! I used to prefer the pair with sweeping but after I got better at the single, sculling became a lot of fun!
I have been in a single a grand total of 3 times,i have to race the irish junior chamipionsjips next week
Wow that's amazing, best of luck to you!!

Why were you using such a thin boat for ur first time

Why not though? Its not like he is an old man who maybe would get hurt if he flips haha.
Never say die and don’t give up.
I was the same my first time, except my first time was when i was on a race and i dont know how,but i didnt flip
I was like this last week I was like this last week but in a 4 man . Totally useless 😊Trying again this morning
Practice makes better! I'm still learning but I've come a long way, so all the best to you in figuring it out!
Never let go of your oars ever
first time in singel and his in a back-wing

I flipped twice the first time I rowed a single as well.
my first time sculling, i fell off the boat within 20 secs after getting shoved off from the pier
I gotta say I almost did that in a double... Pushed off too quick and I jumped out to save my partner from falling in too 🤣
You need to start young i started a 14 years old in a single did my first scullers head at 15 the Head is the boat race course from finish to Putney
Oh yes I wish I started sooner, but I was able to get 5th in Florida State champs so it all worked out! I was able to pick it up soon enough!
@nicolaspokusa When we were juniors we had to American guys rowing with us their farther worked at US Embassy were we in Hammersmith on the Thames
that boat listened & was not persuaded😭🩵
Oh it was out to get me from the start! 😆

Mad respect because boy did I struggle with the first few outings in that single!! 😂
it just be like that
It is clearly seen that the guy was playing a fool. It was far not the first time he was rowing in a single.
Bro is first time on simple and he is on philiph
