You see i can’t help but think this is just straight up an allegory for suicide. Maybe when our mc saw the blue people for the first time, they were actually considering death as a whole, the blue people being the through of death, not in the immediate “i want to die” sense, but in the “I hope it’s peaceful for the dead” sorta sense.
The apprehension and interest that draws the mc towards looking closer at the bridge applies to the idea of death as well. After all, it *is* scary.
Also, no one else seems to notice the bridge which brings the feeling of isolation to the MC. No one else is like them. They’re weird for being able to see the bridge. Same can be said for having thoughts of death. It feels NOT normal.
(i could also argue that the mentioning of the cig smoke drawing up towards the bridge could be alluding to how smoking kills and yada yada)
Maybe the mc noticing the wayward glances of the blue peeps represents them beginning to truly grasp the idea of death as a whole and what it means, but it slips away at first.
When they finally gets a look at it with the binoculars, they fully understands the weight of death. The humanity of it. The dead were people too once, the MC IS a people. Maybe MC will become one of those things one day.
At the major connection with the blue peeps, the mc is comfortable enough with death’s presence that they want to take a closer look. This is absolutely a stretch but perhaps in all of their interest in the bridge lies a bit of awe. Maybe when they finally saw what they were looking at, and saw the bridge turn red, their brain finally had come to the conclusion that it desires death. The awe in the blue bridge is the same awe as they have for death.
Once again. that bitch is a bit of a stretch.
I don’t particularly think i have to explain the permanence of the red bridge. Suicidal thoughts are sticky; they never really leave. They’re obsessing over the idea of suicide. Maybe they don’t consciously recognize they want it but they feel distressed at how much they think about it.
(Now this is just my interpretation. I’m not saying the shit said above is objectively correct, just that it is the most accurate representation i can think of, this particular paragraph doesnt entirely make sense) The mention of people in south america dying is a suicide epidemic. They do happen, your honor, so it makes sense to me. (or maybe ‘south america’ is just a fill in for ‘some far away place’. Something that still doesnt directly affect the MC but still feels real. It’s like reading about someone’s suicide in a newspaper article or hearing about it on the news. It may not be closely related to the MC’s life but it IS something that’s real.)
Anyways, the guilt over ‘causing’ the bridge to turn red perhaps is the MC feeling guilty about being jealous???? of the suicides. Feeling guilty about relating to others suicide. Recognizing the permanence of it. Feeling gross about how they feel about it.
Them not understanding it is just them not understanding why they can’t stop thinking of suicide.
Most importantly, the moment the MC sees that the crimson droplets were actually red bodies jumping, is the moment that the MC TRULY actualizes their desire to end their life.
One can be afraid of dying and still desire it.
I cannot stress how important it is that the MC NEVER reaches out to anyone about being able to see the bridge. If they did, and the person responded helpfully, then they would -in my theory- not have died. The bridge would have never turned red. And if it still had turned red despite the help then perhaps my theory would lose some validity.
-That’s about as far as my personal experience with Suicide goes, (to whoever happens to be reading this very hidden comment, i can assure you that in no way will i ever bring harm to myself or bring about my own death intentionally, just that in the past i have grappled with this) So i may be highly inaccurate in my interpretations for the remaining story-
So anywho, when the red body hit their roof, the MC had actually committed -to- suicide. The red flooding the apartment was death closing in and they were at the point of no return. No amount of interference would help. Sure, you may argue that the MC’s thoughts of “i didn’t deserve this, this is so scary, i don’t want to die” means CLEARLY they didn’t want to commit suicide. BUT!!! Having heard the accounts of people who jumped off the golden gate bridge and survived, it’s said that in the moments between them leaving the top of the bridge and actively falling through the air, they deeply regretted their act. I don’t think a single one of them regretted surviving. Could be wrong, but for my argument Nuh Uh.
My final theory, is that the red bodies-suicides- make others sick, in a similar way that some who commit suicide inspire others around them to do the same. I don’t like this theory on a personal level but it makes sense. I don’t think every crimson drop hit someone and made them sick. Like how not every suicide inspires another.
I have no closing argument. I honestly doubt someone will make it this far into the comment, along with if any of this made sense to someone that is Not Me. to whomever made it this far please allow me to introduce you to my favorite classical pieces of all time Pavane For A Dead Princess by Ravel, and Rachmaninov’s Symphony no 2 movement 3. It fits the tone of all of this fairly well, assuming you’re into it.
