Spanky on guitar, Pino on bass, James Poyser on keys, ?uestlove on drums and Karen Bernod and Anthony Hamilton on backing vocals. That D's "Voodoo" era band - a supergroup in the truest sense of the word. I saw them live about three times back in the day!
I saw them once at the Tower theater in Philly. It was a mind-altering experience. That was one of the greatest shows I ever saw. Considering I grew up with some of the greatest gospel quartets of the 70's & 80s, that's a huge compliment.
This shit so deep in the pocket it's practically Lint. Good Lawd, the Stank Funk. Masterclass on Funk-Rhythm here. Pino on the Bass just deep in the cut, wow. Talk about an all-star lineup.
This is one of the tightest grooves I have heard in a while - I can't ever get too much of this clip! ?uestlove and Pino sound like Stubblefield and Bootsy back in the day. Got to be the funkiest Welshman alive!
Out of this world. This was definitely my era and a big musical influence. I must admit the current stream of new talent in the music industry is making me very happy and keen to keep up. But these guys are the foundation for a lot of that new stuff. So tight, unbelievable.
What a allstar lineup that was with D'Angelo on the Voodoo tour. Angie Stone and Anthony Hamilton as backup singers and the soultronics as the band. D'Angelo needs to get back in this game quick. R&B is real lost without him.
@@usernamevince1 I know that was not angie stone in this video. I'm talking about the overall tour. She was a backup singer owith him during several concerts. The fact that he even had those talented bullets in his background singer arsenal is crazy in itself....#salute
Been listening to a lot of D'Angelo. I looked this up because I was watching the John Mayer Trio jam Chicken Grease and I just realised it's Pino Palladino playing bass haha
O.M.G. I'm pretty much speechless here because that was so totally awesome. Good to see Quest and Pino doing their thangs. Can't wait to see SNL this weekend!
Man!! I saw him on this tour and back then, at that moment, D'Angelo had this glow around him. He and Stevie Wonder are the only two artist I've seen and felt like angels had come down to Earth in human form. Amazing! Oh and Anthony Hamilton singing backup : )
@@PHlophe No different. I listened to the studio version earlier today and love it now as much as I did 22 years ago. I like a lot of diverse music and my opinion holds that this is one of the great albums of all time and one of the great live r&b soul performances of all time as well.
This performance is LIVE...literally AND figuratively. Miss you D - come back! If I could get you and Maxwell in one year live - wooh, I'd be ecstatic!!
This band right HERE!!!!!!!! I remember when this aired. Everybody at house started say'n "Go 'head, go 'head" with the crowd. HA! That is truly Black culture. We just had to fill up the space.
D'Angelo can sing about chicken grease and make it a good (no, great) thing! I was watching the Chris Rock show when this aired and still love it. And a shout out to the background singers. They did the thang!
man just playing this funks up my living room like a dose of chitlins n' turnip greens...got damn..spanky was and is the MAN!!..and props to pino palladino on bass, he used to do cuts with paul young(every time you go away)...mad props for posting this...

You are incredibly lucky

+Celebby9 WORD!? I GOTTA TOUCH THAT ASAP!
roy hargrove on trumpet too when they were touring.
Every person on that stage is a master of their craft. My heroes
Yep
D’Angelo is the only artist who can disappear for 10 years and still be relevant.
Is that a young pino on bass?
@@JS-rp7qb Sure is
Agreed
Pino was and is, a BEAST on bass.
Is everyone mentioning Pino Palladino just cuz he's white or... ?
No, he funky like that. His son is too.
His bass and he are something like Beauty and the Beast.
He is good. But, let's not ever forget James Jamerson!!
MAYBE, Pino is mentioned because he is that good. Jeez, some of you people...
This shit so deep in the pocket it's practically Lint. Good Lawd, the Stank Funk. Masterclass on Funk-Rhythm here. Pino on the Bass just deep in the cut, wow. Talk about an all-star lineup.
Voodoo's a genius record. D'Angelo never has to make another disc again after that one. Nailed it.
But he did. And it was another masterpiece
Well Black Messiah is out...give it a listen , the latest D'Angelo
They sure did assemble an all-star band for this appearance. It's kind of a rare treat, actually.
~25 years later, still feels groundbreaking.
This wasn't 25 years ago it was just about 20. Brown Sugar was 25 years ago but this album dropped in 2000
@@jaydaj5759 this performance is from 98’
Anthony Hamilton on back ups, Pino on bass, Spanky on guitar, Quest on drums!!?! What! This is tight as hell
2024 and still jamming 2 this Greasy track
This is one of the FUNKIEST live versions of this. D'Angelo's tha man!!!
Pino Palladino and Questlove!! Awesome sound..
he's also the funkiest bassist on the planet... so he's got that going for him.
First time ever hearing this. Throughly satisfied.👏👏👏❤️
One of the greatest performances of funk, or any genre for that manner
There is no way you can listen to this song and not dance to it. Funky!
yeah like he's the best?
Every time i see this D'Angelo band tv live show i go crazyyy!!! Every time!!!And I saw it 10000 times!! 🔥💣🔥🔥
PINO!!
Amazing to think he was playing "Wherever I Lay My Hat" a few years before. Amazing musician for sure!
This is one of the tightest grooves I have heard in a while - I can't ever get too much of this clip! ?uestlove and Pino sound like Stubblefield and Bootsy back in the day. Got to be the funkiest Welshman alive!
Definitely my favorite D’angelo song, this is the funkiest live performance I’ve ever seen. Look at how much fun everyone is having on stage!
Palladino... insane on bass! He is one of the most versatile bassists on the scene today!! Seems as if he can laydown anything!!
Saw this way back when it aired on tv. Blew my mind. I just love this!
That groove is just... speechless. Amazing!
Why can't we see shit like this anymore?-----I think it's timeless...
Out of this world. This was definitely my era and a big musical influence. I must admit the current stream of new talent in the music industry is making me very happy and keen to keep up. But these guys are the foundation for a lot of that new stuff. So tight, unbelievable.
Absolutely incredible performance. Palladino and ?uest holding it down, D working the crowd like a true performer. Damn.
pino is like a tower in the background, keeping it all together.
still tryna learn that walk he did to the mic lmao
This is modern soul the way James Brown would have liked it. Amazing.
Amen

indeed
This is hands-down the best version of the song in my opinion
What a allstar lineup that was with D'Angelo on the Voodoo tour. Angie Stone and Anthony Hamilton as backup singers and the soultronics as the band. D'Angelo needs to get back in this game quick. R&B is real lost without him.
That's Shelby J, not Angie Stone.

Pino is the most soulful bassist ever.
Pino played this same tune for John Mayer Trio. They called it Turkey Grease. LOL!
Amazing groove going on here ..i can dig it ..my man Pino is holding it all down. Vocals and harmony wow..very nice.

My god! Groove is so brutal. That was the golden era
That's real deal music right there.
This performance made me buy Voodoo the day it dropped...and I STILL PLAY THIS DAMN CD!!!
Pino is the man. This is probably my fave D'angelo song. Man, this is funky...
Such a groove!
I remember seeing this nearly 15 years ago and this single handedly changed my opinion of modern music at the time. It's still making waves today...
Even and another 7 years later how do you feel about the song

A true groovy scene...and the backgroung singers rock everything...

That energy was crazy! Still love watching everytime i see it!
So incredibly funky...
They showed out on this song!! So much talent on that stage! The whole Voodoo album is hot!
This was a historic performance one that most likely won't and couldn't be duplicated even if someone tried
This song grooves hard! Love the intergration of a slim tall limey on bass! Mr. Palladino!
This has a funky sound, I love it
I just love him!! D PLEASE come out with a album soon!!!!!!
This is an old bucket of Crisco jam, an ultimate jam from ultimate artists, par exellence
That Bass though!!!!
After all these years, I still love it
This is so funky, it hurts (but in that super awesome ultra funky way!)! Fantastic!

Is that Anthony Hamilton singing backround ? Lol

David Fraser I wondered the same thing when I heard a part that sounded totally like him...boom.
This Boy was Crazy out of his mind awesome I hope he’s still performing
D'Angelo's 2014 album is called Black Messiah. It's another masterpiece. He's 50 years old now and working on his next album. He's a musical genius.
You always make me cry...

Sho you right!
Pinos bass playing is just phenomenal.

Everybody is walking the dog! In this performance!...drums bass lead and back ground vocals..masterpiece classic!
DAngelo Chicken Grease I like this song. He really gets the crowd excited.
yessss. everybody stayed were they should be. no unnecessary licks runs or fills. that was XTREMELY FUNKY.
Spanky!
I learned so much listening Spanky Alford's playing in the late 70's with the clouds of Joy.
Me too....
I use those licks to this day!
