I remember when this was on tv. I said this is one fine man. my my my, he sang that night. and when he clapped those hands I was screaming harder than the people in the audience.
Hell yeah, this was an absolutely EPIC performance. I recorded this bad boy on a VCR tape when it first aired. D'angelo, the band (Anthony Hamilton & Shelby J, who was later recruited by Prince, were burning up the backing vocals) and Pino Pallidino on bass...then Tom Jones coming out to do the dang thing on "Sex Machine"? Sh*@ it just don't get no betta! This legendary jam session stands the test of time. "Right on, right on!"
Great performance by D'angelo, who is not afraid to invoke his Rhythm & Blues roots. I find it amazing that Black Artists are discouraged from singing Soul Music with the industry saying it is not marketable, while white Arts without any great skills can merely mimic it and win Grammys. At least Tom Jones have always had the real chops to sing soul music.
@@Ty-mr2kq D'Angelo is too deep, too Spiritual and too Black to allow the industry to make him loose his love of Soul Music and his PHYSICAL SOUL like others Black Artists and many Black Elites have had done. I know when he saw what happen to Prince, whom he had visited and soaked up knowledge when he decided to do this album he would not return. He did a tribute to Prince and we have not heard from him since. As much as I miss is brilliance, him being Independent of their control is fine with me.
@@msrubie11 Haven't heard from who since? He did Afro Punk Fest after his Prince tribute and many other performances and mini tours. All after 2018. After his first album he actually had writer's block. Although his biggest inspiration musically was Prince, ultimately the birth of his son inspired him to write again. Send it on was written right after he brought his son home from the hospital. His latest album wasn't supposed to drop at the time that it did. But in the midst of all the police brutality and killing of young Black Men, D'Angelo dropped Black Messiah like it was hot.
You are one of the most entertaining people on the planet. You teaming together with Tom Jones, is genius. Don't disappear again. I love to be entertained by you. You're great!
Loved this video. Been a fan of Tom Jones since I was a kid. Always loved his voice, but really loved his duet with D'Angelo. First saw this in Amsterdam in May 2002 at a great little bar. They showed it on a couple of large tv screens. I also happen to be a die-hard James Brown fan, so I thought they killed it on Sex Machine. Great performance.
Still remember summer night way back when, just singing this track by myself at like 2am just thinking about shawty ting living her best life in Spain, nostalgic times no doubt 😌✌🏼
Ah it was from a range of skits they did about the popular stars of the time using people from SNL. They did a really funny one about Jennifer Lopez and P.Diddy too. I had this show on tape-I used to watch it all the time.
Tom Jones use to have his own weekly show. back in the late 60s. and I tell you we all looked forward to that night. he use to cut up. and danced like he was a black man in a white body.
D'angelo wil go down in History..to do the Music thing..Incredible.that Voodoo ALbum will be definately be A cult classic for Black Music Lovers Literally.
Taylor Made It's still like that. At least I'll like to believe it is. We just got more idiots on both sides now fucking it up for the rest of us that still believe in unity. Politics destroy everything.
D'Mumblo strikes again :P Maybe he's saying Ray James as a reference to Ray Charles? Maybe it's a nickname they gave him? Who knows, another one of nature's mysteries...
Anthony Hamilton stands out man, thats crazy!
Break It Down D! His music is Timeless, still listening to old D'Angelo Songs!

I remember when this was on tv. I said this is one fine man. my my my, he sang that night. and when he clapped those hands I was screaming harder than the people in the audience.

Exactly in an audience full of white people he didn't back down. He elevated his Blackness and gave it right to them.

I almost lost it when the band started playing Untitled. That's honestly what he should've performed....

Because most of D’Angelo’s songs like Prince music 🎶
It’s D’Angelo’s music. Can we stop talking about prince and accept the impeccable craftsmanship of this gifted artist.
@@amann3161
Yes, please. I like Prince, but D'Angelo is more soul...Prince more pop.
Come on Tom, how you gonna forget the lyrics? Lol
Player move: D brings out one of the original White Chocolate OGs Tom Jones to rock the stage. But really tho, Tom is really an Albino ain't he?
the days black and white people actually liked eachother!
Taylor Made It's still like that. At least I'll like to believe it is. We just got more idiots on both sides now fucking it up for the rest of us that still believe in unity. Politics destroy everything.
Anyone know what D's saying at 8:15? 'Piano Regime'?
It's James Poyser, The Roots pianist. I hear Piano & James but don't really understand The word in the middle...
D'Mumblo strikes again :P
Maybe he's saying Ray James as a reference to Ray Charles? Maybe it's a nickname they gave him?
Who knows, another one of nature's mysteries...
On Piano, Ray James (Introducing the Piano Player)
"Piano break, James"
Rev James - he was called the Reverend in the Soultronic band during the voodoo tour
