I find it increasingly infuriating that there's more institutional accountability in place for literally everybody in the sport--players, managers, executives, and yes, even fans--than there is for umpires. Some of these people really need not to have jobs. And it needs to be made clear to the rest of them that compared to everybody else on the field, they don't matter. Umpires are tools. They're furniture. They're there to do nothing but arbitrate the action on the field as it relates to the rule book. They are not to become part of that action. Any time the ump is part of a game's story, that ump has failed in his job. When it happens continuously, they need to be fired.
If you looked at the rules for what they can be ejected for you’d see they cut players and managers a bit of slack already. How often in other sports do you see players and coaches argue something as small as balls and strikes in this hostile manner?
