About the chickens: I usually just let them wander around and lay eggs, because I get enough feathers from zombies. But since there can only be 15 passive mobs spawned at once, I'll end up killing them off when I need other passive loot.

I suggest a 2x2 square of lava held up by signs directly under the pistons that control the drop.
