In the race to become the first mainstream car maker to really build an affordable electric family hatchback Citroen hasn’t exactly been troubling the scorers to date.
Apart from a handful of plug-in hybrids that have been there or thereabouts and the crazy Ami city car - you can watch our video by clocking the link below - Citroen has seemingly been happy to watch stablemates Peugeot, DS and Vauxhall (the three other brands owned by the PSA Group) jump on the electric car bandwagon.
But now, finally, Citroen has its own contender. And, cleverly it’s pitching its newcomer - the snappily-titled e-C4 - not as yet another SUV but as a family five-door hatchback.
This might sound like marketing suicide given the car industry’s obsession with SUVs, but we think it’s something of a masterstroke. That’s because a quick look at the best-selling cars in the UK will tell you that the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra actually account for way more sales than SUVs do.
We first saw this car earlier this year but Tom wasn't allowed to drive it. Now Citroen has finally relented and handed over the keys. Here's what Tom thinks.

Good review again Tom, but remember to put ac on... I like the focus on comfort as a usp for this and future Citroen’s, they were best mainstream manufacturer at this. Same it’s the same old PSA battery/motor combination. Not enough oomph to make me trade in my I3. I’ll probably wait for twin motor EQA.
Nice review 👍 looks good in black painting.
Do you know what the loading length is? For example.. does a buggy of 1 m length fit in the trunk?
It seems to have issues with demisting the side windows. I have had a Citroën (C4 Grand Picasso) for 11 years and it is still going strong, but I think the range of the e-C4 is a little too small, I would prefer something like 250-300 miles and charging at a higher rate.
I am not sure I like the looks but I like the Citroën comfort.
Great intro/video!
Like it, but could do with 60 KWh battery and a rear wiper
why everybody is talking about lack of back wiper? does the bmw 3, mercedes c, or any other sedan has a back wiper? Look at the angle of the back window! it doesnt need to have a wiper!
Great video. all the things i needed to know in just 7 mins.
And 37 seconds
@@minorearthmajorsky1476 you may want toforget the 37 seconds
We were the last drive of the week, so came away with all the bags of cookies, 4 lunch bags, cola, fanta, water and a Citroen Monopoly board! - Result!
Recycle those snacks!
Here in Australia I wouldn't even consider a French car, normally. But in EV form suddenly these interesting European cars are a realistic prospect. Though you can keep soft roaders like these - I'll have a French hot hatch or a luxury sedan, please!
May I politely suggest when borrowing cars you might want to demist the side windows. It's likely to prevent a coming together with other vehicles. Or is it an example of being unable to run the aircon and drive at the same time😊
Beautiful car, I hope c3 and c1 would be as stunning as this one, cause I’m getting one.
It is all about how it rides! If it rides like a real Citroën then it is a no brainer! I want one!
What's its aircon like? It's quite fogged up inside and didn't appear to be clearing up quickly.
He was wearing his grandmothers massive wool jacket that was wet from the rain, no car can handle a wet jacket like that. I'm surprised it didn't fog up more inside.
Is this better than the Vauxhall Mokka-e, it also seems that PSA only made one electric powertrain, but they've decided to put it in everything. The numbers are very similar
Dead on - same Powertrain in everything really. It’s a good / efficient enough system, just not hugely groundbreaking. Works here as the car isn’t trying to be anything but useful. 🤔
Why spoil it with poor rear visibility, that crazy spoiler and WHAT! no rear wash wipe!!??
C'mon designers get the basics right!! Grrrr
It's the same set up I have with the Ioniq which I have had for three years, it's never been a problem
I will add that you will FAIL your driving test if you dont make effective use of the rear view driver mirror. This implies an unrestricted rear window is important.
You can even be fined if you don't clear snow from your windows.
I also had a coupe without a wiper. In certain conditions rear view was rubbish.
@@jeremylister89 you need to remember that the areo design does clear quite a lot of rain. Even with a wiper you need to remove snow with your hand , not that this was an issue for me in the last cold snap, the Ioniq as ore heat. When I left for work at 6.30 the car was lovely and warm and all the glass defrosted 😀
@@btnbiker My experience with a Honda Coupe was different. Airflow differences perhaps, but in slow moving traffic and rain, surely it doesn't clear? Low pressure at the screen drags muck from dirty road onto the screen. Hatchbacks/estates are pretty bad in this respect.
How weird. It's both very ugly and quite handsome at the same time.
So.. a Citroen ?
That's how a Citröen is supposed to look. You either love it, or leave it.
Really
I particularly like the GS/GSA styling cues too.
Seems like a nice car, but why do PSA so far only sell 50 kWh versions of their electric cars with only 100 kW max DC charging ? That makes them much less reliable for long trips and rules them out for me. This kind of option should have been released in the 2014 C4 Cactus, but now looks a bit dated...
Who's PSA?
why everybody is talking about lack of back wiper? does the bmw 3, mercedes c, or any other sedan has a back wiper? Look at the angle of the back window! it doesnt need to have a wiper!
There is no onboard charger for DC fast charging, the charger is in the chargestation.
Really like this
One day Brits will realise that "oh la la" in French actually MEANS "oh dear".
Not it doesn't. It might.... It does.
It depends on the tone. Mostly it means that something is great.
@@TheAllMightyGodofCod wicked...
Call me biased... but the exterior reminds me a little of the Polestar 2.... BTW. You're not camp. Just not serious. And I love comfort over sporty.
I think it’s that semi-raised stance and fastback-ish shape? I get that...
Twin motor 4x4 sideways version please
I wish... Pike’s Peak eC4?
@@tomwookieford8445 Yea that would be cool. I would like to see AWD e platforms from affordable manufacturers.
No such thing as an on-board 50kw charger as that would be DC which is supplied directly to the battery via the DC pins and only limited by the cars internal charging profile. 22kw on board chargers like the Renault Zoe are referring to an AC connection. The fact they offer 50kw and 100kw charging is just a fleecing attempt for a bit of software
It has a DC connection and it’s working fine on my eC4
Extra £250 from You've Been Framed 😂good review.
1:15 Same, honestly
Looking very smart 😜
If citroen ever did decide to make its way back to the states, I could see this doing pretty well. :-)
Don’t think so. Too small and Americans like their japanese and American cars too much
@@WorldwideHypercars I’m from the states and I’ve been interested in EDM cars for some time, though I will admit I am not the average American, and there is a rise in compact SUV sales here. This would fit in next to the Chevy Trax and I’ve seen a fair few of those around. :)
@@rml695 Yes I know b it french cars just wouldn’t do well. Most Americans wouldn’t know that citroen or Peugeot even exists. They would have to spend so much on building a dealer network and spending a ton on marketing a brand no ones ever heard of before that it simply just wouldn’t be profitable
@@WorldwideHypercars Yeah, you’re probably right :)
I wonder if Citroen was able to manage engineering an electric motor to simulate "running on 3 cylinders" when the traction control wheel RPM sensors develope corrosion?
Are you sure there is no rear window wiper???? I mean, that is a deal breaker in "snowy" countries. I can't believe it...
Yeah madness!
I live in Norway and i CAN asure u don't need rear wipes.
@@manuelmov explain why please. Inability to clear snow or rain or dirt from rear window whist driving is not important?
@@jeremylister89 Because you have two mirrors, one on each front door , which gives you way better rear visibilty than the interior mirror.
No, it's not a "deal breaker". I live in a snowy country, Sweden, and all the cars I've had were equipped with one mirror on each front door. Gives me much better rear visibility than through the rear window!
U.K. tax breaks are ridiculously low considering we are one of the top economies in the world. Romania gives a tax break of 9,000 euros on EV’s. Now that is a helping hand to change - especially considering cars are cheaper in that market. Come on U.K., you need to get your act together if you want to ban the sales of petrol and diesel in the neat future. So far you are doing crap.
Greetings from Cumbria in in the U.K.
Stay safe and well everyone.
We just f**** our economy with Brexit
Some segments in the video are stamped not adjacent to each other
Poor window demisting?
I hope after mass production of EV's the prices will be affordable.
Why are you driving with the side window misted up? Air con not switched on?
Sorry but as a safe driver I would be really pissed off if I saw that being driven like that.
Wipe the window on the next review... but for that reason I’ve seen enough (4 mins)🤬
100 kW on board charger?? Must be a world record :-). Citroens on board charger is 7 kW and car is able to charge at 100kW from rapid DC-charger. Rapid charger charges car's battery with direct DC, with no need to go through on board AC-charger, so it bypasses that.
Ride quality alone draws me to this EV. I have a BMW i3; which I love, but my biggest grip is the ride quality, which is terrible!
It has a face only its mother would love.
Nice interior, fugly exterior
I would say the opposite, nice exterior and the hard plastic dashboard and doors is a problem for me.
For forward pull button. For reverse push button. 🥴🤣
Side windows seemed to be fogged up and not clearing as video went on. This during cold morning winter commutes on busy city merging streets is not so good. The all electric heating system is sure to drain battery fast. Whether weather is cold rainy or dry and dusty a rear wiper is a must and turns me of the Car straight away. Come on PSA Citroen designers you can do much better that this. Looks like a rush to market (mistake).
When it gets a rear wiper, it will be on my shortlist for my next EV.
why everybody is talking about lack of back wiper? does the bmw 3, mercedes c, or any other sedan has a back wiper? Look at the angle of the back window! it doesnt need to have a wiper!
3:57 100% with you on that

I wish Tesla would make a car that looks like this and the ID4 etc, rather than the melted Mazda look
No rear wiper! There's a problem already unless aerodynamics keep it clean
No, it's not! Use the door mirrors!
Funny. All UK car reviews are made with grey skies, and foggy windows 😂 Sorry guys
Don't mind buttock comments from your female colleagues, but not from you!
And what is wrong with my buttocks, Mister B?!
You keep taking about your buttocks and leave women out if it I am trying to have my breakfast
No thanks
Too bad it has chinese batteries.
Very few EV"s don't have Chinese batteries
This looks exactly like Ford mustang e
How you going to recover £5000 paid extra if you buy an EV 🤔
.
Most people pretend driving an EV is 100% free
and say in 5 years you completely recover the money which is completely ridiculous and non sensical
All these zombies with sanitary towels on their faces is disturbing. Can’t watch this
Sorry but the humour is ridiculous, just give me a proper review and cut the crap...please
Chill, Phil.
Another overpriced EV. If you going to waste 30k might as well drop another 10k and get a tesla.
It would be a boring old world if everyone wanted the same type of car.

This car is forgettable.
I wish the same could be said for the start of this vide. Where was the editor? The start is idiotic and cringe worthy.
The presenter's style is a little grating.
