You are so unique... riding around on the Vespa at 70 and enjoying life. Thanks for such openness and frankness about this issue... I've never seen a video on this topic. Great job. PS. your 'drop dead' comment was awesome....
Thank you for this video. My wife of 41 years marriage is a Malaysian citizen. We live in the UK and are both now in our 70's. Due to my wife's ill health and my disability I have accepted sooner or later one of us may need full time care. I am really concerned of my wife ever entering a residential care home in the UK. Many cases of ill treatment to the elderly have been documented by the media. We are visiting Malaysia this year and will seriously research the residential care market whilst we are there.
I would suggest you consider retiring in Malaysia. Since your wife is Malaysian, try to trace her relatives. I am sure they would please to help in any way they can to receive both of you here. All the best.
THANK YOU Taylor...This speaks to me! I will be in Malaysia in the Fall and while I am only 52-yrs old, I am planning for the point that I need living support once I am older. Your channel is so informative! Aloha... 🌺
Great video. Sometimes people find this sort of thing taboo and they are reluctant to talk about it due to pride. Everyone deserves dignity in old age so we should be thinking and talking about these things. Much appreciated
I think many of us are facing this same situation. Thank you for making this video. I had no children, and have no husband. Can you keep making videos, and say the price in USD too please. For those of us who have no family it helps knowing we don't have to grow old alone. This is comforting.
Family-orientated. Couldn't agree more. Somehow i do feels Thailand geared towards youthfulness and entertainment, and Singapore pretty much corporate and professional culture, Malaysia position itself as family oriented surroundings
Thank you for covering this important topic. In Australia, full time aged care is $5000 - $20,000 per month, per resident. It’s wild and there are so many elderly people who won’t be able to afford this (but need the care). Thank you for the detailed coverage.
For those with own house, a live in helper would be more economical and you get personal attention. And best to have good friends dropping in occasionally to check how's things going.
Hi Taylor. I’m not an expat nor am I at ‘that age’ but I find myself drawn to your videos haha. So interesting to learn more about my own country from an expat. You’re awesome.
Hey Taylor. Great content. Im almost in my 50s now. I stay near Bukit Jalil. Your content really made me think about my future life. Wish you a good day ahead. Take care bro.
Such an important but little-covered topic, and so well done. Cambodia doesn't have any facilities like this yet, so this could be an option for people who need extra help or care and want to stay in the region. The prices are great given that you'd have barely any expenses outside of the monthly fee. Congratulations on a fantastic video! 🎉😊❤
Thank you Taylor for covering a very important subject. In Ontario, senior care is extremely expensive. It has been very much on my mind as an active 77 year old. I have not seen any info on YT about this topic. You have eased my mind about options for the future.
I'm so glad you showed this. I'm right at 62 and I've been concerned about needing assistance in years to come but haven't yet starting to investigate the subject. I'm still in the US caring for my elderly mother but I plan to eventually live in Vietnam, Thailand or Malaysia. When I have given Assisted Living a thought I guess I assumed I'd have to come back to the US. That was a dreary thought because I don' t want to live in a home with old judgmental Americans. I don't even want to think of the price of it. That one place you showed had peaceful and lovely grounds. I can see myself hanging out there as long a there's some expats to exchange notes with.
Wish you a great health, sir. You may find & Google the institution name if you want contact, I believe you can start searching what is available from those places online. Of course I believe Malaysia would be the best alternative, but the most important is how that place contribute the significant impact into your physical as well as your mind health 😊
Thank you Taylor for covering this. Not an easy topic to discuss but i give you credit for being so open about this. I even found your sense of dark humor refreshing (drop dead! lol). Luckily we will still have you doing videos for a long time! All the best!
Hi Taylor, you would be glad that we both have been binge watching your videos since we discovered your channel. This topic is rarely ever brushed by anyone doing videos on retirements in other countries. But you being yourself, candid and truthful as you are have put up this for many who turn their face away from this reality. Thank you very much for this video. All the best for more videos to come …
@@Ellewawwaw Thank you! I am sure a lot of people would love to see podcasts/videos of options. A lot of Americans, Brits and Australians have started retiring, and the money for their old age would really be of benefit to Malaysia, Indonesia, or Thailand.
My uncle had a live-in helper to help out with my late grandfather's day to day activities. My grandfather had a stroke and had trouble moving around by himself. So it became more difficult for my uncle at that point to handle everything by himself (he is a bachelor and living alone btw). So having a male live in helper was the best option for his situation. Just mentioning this to say that a live-in helper would also be an option if it comes down to it.
I hope the elder person and their family will do their due diligence when vetting a live-in helper. A distant cousin of mine hired one for his elderly parents. When the wife died, the live-in helper married the husband. He died shortly after the wedding under "mysterious circumstances", but not before he had his will changed leaving everything to that woman. She ended up sponsoring her whole family to come to America. I was told she and her family are living in their house living off of their lifelong savings. Buyer beware.
@@GUITARTIME2024 what does that have to do with anything?? my grandfather had mobility issues. There's no point in getting a female helper if she couldn't help him move from one room to another? There's a difference in getting a helper for cooking and cleaning and helper for mobility. My uncle didn't need any help with the cooking or cleaning. He just needs someone to help prevent injuries and move him around the house when he's not around. Unless u are that cruel to get a single female helper to bear the weight of a man around the house. That's ur preference, I suppose to get a female to do a man's job, but we prioritise safety from injuries from falling down for our late grandfather and that's what we did.
Thanks so much for making this video. My wife and I have been wanting to get information about this topic, so thank you again. We saw one advertisement for an assisted living facility in Ipoh, but other than that have had very little info. This video is very helpful.
In the U.S., the monthly rent for assisted-living is over US$5,000 to $7,000 per month. It includes only one meal. Medical insurance takes care of your medical needs. US$650,000 is required as a deposit in an upscale assisted-living facility close to my home. It is returned to your beneficiaries once you are dead. The prices of the nursing homes in Malaysia are high for Malaysians as you pointed out. Few people have $5,000 - $8,000 per month lying around.
Thanks for the video Andrew! It gives people who are thinking of living in Malaysia a rough guide to what's available. Like your sense of humour too!! Well done!
Well Taylor, you should also find out if they offer long-term care insurance as well. I think my sisters (Malaysian citizens aged 52 and 58 and still working) paid RM$600/month each with RM$2 million annual limit. The catch is that they will most likely check for pre-existing condition to qualify or pay higher monthly premium, which makes sense.
Thank you so much for this, I’m 65, from the US and starting to research elder care estate planning and asset protection. Seem’s like a good alternative to the US senior care facilities in the states, not to mention the US prices start at $7,000 USD per month. I lived in Chiang Mai for 16 months and noticed advertisements for senior living facilities there as well. The SEA options look promising compared to the US.
Thanks Taylor we hope you add some other facilities in the future, perhaps the Penang , and Isop areas. We are spending the month of March mainly in Malayasia looking for condos. Maybe we will run into you.
Thanks Taylor. Like your style! I’m subscribed. It certainly a beautiful environment where you visited. I’m in Australia where a good standard of genuine care is scarce, particularly in high care nursing homes. Shortage of qualified nursing care here is a real issue. Waiting times for admission is an increasing problem here but what is most alarming is the history of significant cases of elder cruelty and abuse as outlined by a Royal Commission held in 2018. In this country I’m afraid you send your loved ones to these places in order to die a lonely and miserable death. We treat our pets better!
With some forward planning, let today be today, tomorrow be to tomorrow. Just enjoy the precious life as it is and it will be. Take care of your health Taylor.
Thank you for the video!!!! It would be wonderful to continue this as a series since so few people cover it. At 57, I just found out that my long term care policy will work overseas. Of course, that is were all the details ended. Other than the price, it would be great to hear more details like how long does it take to apply and move in (waiting list?), organized activities for the residence, onsite health professionals, access to transportation (is it included), distance to shopping, can I automatically pay using direct deposit from a US bank? There is so much to learn about this stuff. Keep up the great work!!!
I'm Chinese American. I've been to Malaysia before, and I'm traveling there again to test out their healthcare system. I've arranged a few appointments which usually take weeks if not months to schedule in my town in the US. And that's not even considering the long waits for tests and any procedures following doctor visits. I'd rather pay out-of-pocket in Malaysia (which isn't much compared to America) and have everything completed within a week or so. We'll see how it goes. If this trip turns out well, I'll seriously consider retiring in Asia.
Thats weeks & months waiting usually happened only in Malaysia GH if the patients’ condition wasn’t considered serious. For fast result, choose privates which I think affordable costs for most expats. Usually Malaysians will need their medical insurance to cover that if they intend to opt for private hospitals, but of course I think its a best alternative on the basis that almost zero waiting time, available specialists, comfortable surrounding & great facilities/ services. May your experience go smoothly & getting great results
Hello Andrew! I am a new Subscriber and this is about the 10th or so video of yours that I have watched in the last 24 hours, but my first comment. THANK YOU SO MUCH for giving your insights on living as an Expat there in KL! I plan to become an Expat retiree in the foreseeable somewhere, but I am doing my research now. Wish I could make it happen tomorrow, but I am caring for my 86 year-old mother here the mid-south USA. I have been here for 22 years after leaving my native (and expensive) state of California for economic reasons. Some say California is a country of it's own in a way, so perhaps you can call me a "Californian Expat". 😀 Malaysia is on my short list of Expat locations, and you helped make that happen! I should be able to quality for the new MM2H guidelines when I am ready to put the USA in my rear-view mirror, but I will do the Tourist Visa first to check things out when the time comes. P.S. please say hi to Earle Gray for me! 🐈
This was an awesome subject to share.no one thinks about it but its right around the corner for many. The price is affordable compared to in the states..
Thanks Taylor! This is so helpful! Could you do a few more of these retirement videos and accomodation. May be the retirement center can sponsor the video 😊
Thanks, Taylor! One of those subjects we don't like to or want to talk about, but as we get older we need to take the time to consider it. Nice to know there are affordable and appealing options in places like Malaysia. If their assisted living facilities are like the rest of their health care, it should be top notch. Thanks for educating us on this issue!
Selecting a nursing home is similar to selecting a hotel. It depends on the type of facilities we need and how much you can afford to pay. We must pay more the more facilities we require. Having someone come see us on a regular basis and take care of our needs is an additional option we can think about. If we choose not to live in a nursing home, we may also arrange for daily food delivery and for someone to clean the house every two or three days. If we need someone to drive us to the hospital or clinic, there is also a voluntary service available. The most crucial requirement is that we have sufficient funds to cover any necessary services when they are needed.. So, don't worry, just be happy !!
@@cac1504 - Actually, a large number of Singaporean workers are Malaysians. Since Singapore offers a superior exchange rate, they should take advantage of this while they are still young in order to find more money there. As a result, they will be able to retire in Malaysia and live comfortably into their old age.
Thank you for covering this important topic. As my wife and plan for our overseas retirement, assisted living and home health care are important considerations. We enjoy and appreciate the variety of your content.
Great topic and good information..well presented . More topics on this please and aging subjects in Malaysia ! You are the local saga magazine equivalent ! Give us more ..like funeral cremation , physio places , wills who to recommend etc etc and more travels too suitable for golden oldies expats ! Also health insurance for those with pre conditions too alternatives !
Thank you so much for this video Andrew. We were planning to move to Malaysia from the US but in 2025 but concerned about moving with my 78yr mother who will need care at some point soon. You have definitely made the decision to move easier. Hopefully we can do an interview with you as well one day. Keep up the great work!
Well said, Andrew. One of the benefit that most missed out is, the big savings on clothings since in the tropic, there is no winter and plenty of sunshine that allow one to go about easily while getting n enjoying the free Vit D from the sun. These 2 factors alone, in my opinion, are beneficial to consider as we all grow older. Keep up the good work. Thks
Your sudden blurb of "drop dead" made me almost fell off my chair. You're so hilarious 🙂. Thank you for another video full of useful information. Now at least I know another possible option, although my need for elderly care is years away (well, hopefully stays that way). Thank you again for sharing!
Thank you so much for making this video. Great to know and certainly puts Malaysia on the map for me. Could you let me know the name if the park you filmed this in? I didn't quite catch it. Thanks again
Wow Mr Andrew, you are thinking so far ahead and preparing for such eventuality which prompted me to think of my own too. However there is one thing i'd like to share here. While writing my will, i found out that Malaysian Law do not recognise a "living will" (ie donee to be able to execute the will when the donor is alive but lies in a vegetative state or is so ill to be aware of his/her surroundings). So the donee (beneficiary) would not be able to use the money/assets to pay for the donor's medical costs. I hope the law will be revised soon, but until then, need to think of a way to get around it. Take care and all the best. 🙏🙏
What a brave person you are. People don't talk about all this because they are scared. You are not. And by the way you are still young and healthy.😊 Mr Taylor, my wife n I would love to meet you when we come to Malaysia very soon. May God protect you always.
Thank you Taylor, I am so glad you did this video. Also saw your 10 year video today. Glad you have some one in your life, as a person who turns 62 in 5 months being alone was a fear of mine. Please Keep the videos coming. I am like 4 years and 5 months from retirement it is nice to see a gay my age thriving overseas. Give Earl Grey some pets from me. Big Bear Hugs.
Try check out Sri Seronok Retirement Village , run by Little Sisters of the Poor Catholic Sisters...they have private room with bath etc, beautiful neighbourhood in cheras. Green and clean.
Hi thanks for the video. If possible would you speak of the meal arrangement and how a communal living system manages ppl with ingredientabrestrictions/ allergy etc pls 😊 thank you
gee.. you looks really good for your age.. I thought you are late 50 or early 60. super useful info for us who getting old and need to think about it.. I just checked an assisted living in DC surburb ( in MD ) and decent ones are US $5000+. thank you for the info.
my partner says he would rather die at home than go to a nursing home. i kind of see what he means, it's a depressing end to life with your last memories on earth being mundane and "assisted", dragged on for years if you are unlucky. The best is just to drop dead at home with wonderful memories.
Thanks for this video! Before you ever sign on the dotted line, please get full clarification about the conditions for going out from the facility. You mentioned that somebody must escort you outside. This may be a rather cumbersome rule as it would involve you signing a power of attorney. (There would need to be limitation in the powers, especially regarding your money) The other thing to watch out for is what would happen if the company becomes insolvent. From what you mention, this company has a good reputation. Good luck!
Hello Taylor. 70? You look great! I’m moving to hua Hin Thailand in 15 months! Retiring at 56! I enjoy your videos. You are a good soul. I hope you weren’t harmed, but I was in hysterics watching Earl Grey take a little nip at you. Your reaction was priceless. Hope everything is copacetic with you two. I have a cat too. My biggest stress moving from LA to Thailand is getting my cat there! Fortunately I have found several pet shipping professionals. $4500. for the first class attention she will receive but I think it’s money well spent. One more thing… I loved the place you visited recently outside KL. The town started with an H. Anyway, it looked perfect! (Other than a lack of WiFi) ✌🏻and ❤ to you.
Thank you so much for this information. It was exactly what I was looking for to answer some questions. We are trying to prepare for retirement and move to a place that we can afford to live in dignity. The US is getting so expensive if you are older -you must begin to prepare for the future years ahead and it is not affordable to get old in the US unless you have millions and know that the govt or corporations/health care will take it all.
Your article is very informative...thank you. Personally I think I'd rather live in my own apartment and have a live in maid/semi nurse work for me and take care of me until she can not do it anymore. To stay and live in that small room, the one looking like a maid room, would be very depressing to me. Do you have a video of the more expensive rooms?
Good job on a difficult topic... Chiang Mai Thailand has some nice facilities maybe a touch more reasonable and maybe nicer and also w/expats in mind. They also have some a bit more expensive but w/pools etc.. a good bit more luxury too. There is a basic price but it increases as more services are required. I do have family here, but would not want to inconvenience their lives.
Hi Andrew, do you have a list of these retirement / independent / assisted living properties in & around Kuala Lumpur you had mentioned (e.g., name, location, website)? Would be great to explore their services & surroundings in detail. Thanks for the post!
Thank you so much for posting this. I may end up in one of these institutions at some point. From what I know in the US, this is alsmot 4-8 times more!
Thanks Andrew for taking us on this little Journey, I'm about 10 years behind you so if you're looking for that Power of Attorney to inherit, just let me know 😉.
I have a few friends who are live in care givers in JB. They are paid between RM 2.5-3k per month with one day a week off. Quite a number of Singaporeans in nursing homes in Johor as it's much cheaper.
When I tried to rertire in the Philippines from 2014 to 2019 I figured it'd be easy to hire a "live-in" "helper". Some young cutie from the "province". Heck, in the Philippines a province girl would work doing everything for $200usd a month for sure, if you provided room & board. Just hide your passwords. Now that I'm back in USA and totally alone of course, I worry about the inevitable.
You are so unique... riding around on the Vespa at 70 and enjoying life. Thanks for such openness and frankness about this issue... I've never seen a video on this topic. Great job. PS. your 'drop dead' comment was awesome....

Thanks for posting this! It's definitely some thing that is top of mind for me in retirement overseas.
Glad it was helpful! ☺️
Thank you Taylor it's an important subject for those of us in approaching our final years
I'm Chinese American.
Good luck, I’m absolutely sure you will be impressed!
How do you apply for the status to stay in m’sia? What kind of visa?
Malaysia is on my short list of Expat locations, and you helped make that happen! I should be able to quality for the new MM2H guidelines when I am ready to put the USA in my rear-view mirror, but I will do the Tourist Visa first to check things out when the time comes. P.S. please say hi to Earle Gray for me! 🐈
Good luck to you! 🤗
Great video, something I've yet to consider. This a growing business here and has improved so much over time.
You are so helpful with all your information.Thank you.
You are welcome. 🤗
Thank you very much for covering this important topic. 😊
Soon more Singaporeans are coming to Malaysia for retirement.
@@cac1504 - Actually, a large number of Singaporean workers are Malaysians. Since Singapore offers a superior exchange rate, they should take advantage of this while they are still young in order to find more money there. As a result, they will be able to retire in Malaysia and live comfortably into their old age.
@@cac1504haha 😅
Thank you for covering this important topic. As my wife and plan for our overseas retirement, assisted living and home health care are important considerations. We enjoy and appreciate the variety of your content.
Thank you so much! 😊
Sounds great! Good luck!
You are the only one I encountered that addresses this imp issue. You have given me a lot to think about.
Thks
Absolutely!
Excellent idea of planning ahead for yourself. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you soo much for the informative video! You are helping and saving lives… ❤❤❤
You are so welcome! 🤗
This is quite timely - I'm just 60+ but definitely exploring all of my options - Thank you
You're so welcome!
Hey Taylor ♤ your vlog as always with new topics and ideas 😊 have nice weekend ☕️ take care & let's explore ahead 🌻🍀
My dad has dementia and is in a full-time care home. It costs $10,000/mo.
😮, They had dementia patients at the Mansion.
Omg, $10k a month? I would want to visit Switzerland when it comes to that.

Thank you ... Andrew to share with us your experience and make Malaysia such a lovely place to stay and retired .............................
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
What a great topic - something we put off addressing!!
Good on you Andrew!!!! Have fun!!!! Cheerio!!!
There is one new assisted home care in klang Town called acacia pacific. Just opened not long ago.
The Best Channel Ever ❤
❤️❤️❤️ Thabks Ray Mak!
Your sudden blurb of "drop dead" made me almost fell off my chair. You're so hilarious 🙂. Thank you for another video full of useful information. Now at least I know another possible option, although my need for elderly care is years away (well, hopefully stays that way). Thank you again for sharing!
Good of you to discuss this currently important topic. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Thanks for covering this important topic. It should be of great benefit to quite a few people.
Thank you so much for making this video. Great to know and certainly puts Malaysia on the map for me. Could you let me know the name if the park you filmed this in? I didn't quite catch it. Thanks again
Ampang Hilir Park.
Thanks for the info.
I am the one should thank you for sharing Mr Andrew. Have a good week. 🙏🙏
Very interesting! It was a lovely little place.. I like the idea cooked meals and doctor visit! I’m still young but this was heart felt 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a brave person you are. People don't talk about all this because they are scared. You are not.
And by the way you are still young and healthy.😊
Mr Taylor, my wife n I would love to meet you when we come to Malaysia very soon.
Thanks! 🙏
This is one of the first well planned homes with independence built in.
Hello from CA. Really would appreciate it if u know the prices, as their website doesn't list. Thanks. Terima Kasih.
@@lizcarlyle2477 I listed the prices in the video.
Hi thanks for the video. If possible would you speak of the meal arrangement and how a communal living system manages ppl with ingredientabrestrictions/ allergy etc pls 😊 thank you
Great suggestion!
gee.. you looks really good for your age.. I thought you are late 50 or early 60. super useful info for us who getting old and need to think about it.. I just checked an assisted living in DC surburb ( in MD ) and decent ones are US $5000+. thank you for the info.
Wow, thank you!
Andrew Taylor may God bless you with good health and may joyous living here in Malaysia.
Thank you so much 🙏
my partner says he would rather die at home than go to a nursing home. i kind of see what he means, it's a depressing end to life with your last memories on earth being mundane and "assisted", dragged on for years if you are unlucky. The best is just to drop dead at home with wonderful memories.
I agree!
Enjoyed this topic and all the information given...thank you Mr Taylor...you are very kind and caring person❤
You are so welcome 🙏
A good episode with a good topic for retirees in Malaysia - worth the thoughts of this...😌
Thanks! ☺️
Very positive and brilliant choice... Hope U will keep healthy and stay positive
Good luck, take care. I pray you have a very long healthy life forever.
Good luck!
Thanks but I doubt I’ll be needing it.
Thank you for this Andrew. Much appreciated. At least I know what is available should the need ever come up.
Absolutely! ☺️
Thanks! Good luck to you!
Glad it was helpful! 🤗
That was the expensive room at that place! I’m sure others have larger rooms. 😂
Thanks for the tips!
Interesting to learn about the options in Malaysia. It’s also sort of depressing at the same time. Thanks as always. Cheers!
Thank you for the information..very reasonable price versus the US and the weather is awesome
It really is!
Hi Andrew, do you have a list of these retirement / independent / assisted living properties in & around Kuala Lumpur you had mentioned (e.g., name, location, website)? Would be great to explore their services & surroundings in detail. Thanks for the post!
No, sorry. Just Google assisted living Kuala Lumpur
We were thinking about the Retirement Homes in Malaysia, but did not like that the residents are not allowed to go out by themselves.
Yes, that is an issue but not sure if they are all that way.
Thank you so much for posting this. I may end up in one of these institutions at some point. From what I know in the US, this is alsmot 4-8 times more!
Very interesting topic Taylor. Most of retired people have to take care of their future when they will not be able to do everything...
Thanks Andrew for taking us on this little Journey, I'm about 10 years behind you so if you're looking for that Power of Attorney to inherit, just let me know 😉.
😂
I have a few friends who are live in care givers in JB. They are paid between RM 2.5-3k per month with one day a week off. Quite a number of Singaporeans in nursing homes in Johor as it's much cheaper.
How can I find a live in caregiver in KL? Might need one in the near future for my parent.
This was a very interesting video especially for options for getting older
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you, Taylor. Death and taxes unavoidable but the care facilities in Malaysia give you a soft landing
Great topic. Great report. Something we try to ignore/not think about in the West.
Appreciate this vlog on this important topic. The assisted living facility in Malaysia seems decent. Best wishes to you and Earl Grey.
Glad it was helpful!
