The bird is known as the Asian Koel, or 'Burung Tuwu' in Malay. Indeed, the Charlie Ant/Rove beetle appears to be more prevalent in Penang. During my years living in Melaka, I never encountered them. Their abundance may be due to the paddy fields in Kedah, which provide an ideal breeding ground. Regarding the window screens, they are indeed challenging to find one. I had to DIY create them myself, and locally, we typically refer to them as mosquito nets.
On the topic of mosquito net, modern houses with air-cond don't need them because the inhabitants can just close all the doors & windows and then turn on the air-cond. While for traditional houses, especially village style wooden houses, they did use mosquito net, just not on the windows, but over the beds! Much easier to set up and doesn't require extensive installation fee.
Kalau kena gigit semut tu.. Bersih dengan kapas alcohol.. Pedih sikit.. Then Sapu atau oles minyak supaya rasa Terbakar tu hilang.. Semut tu sedikit berbisa.. 😅 Opss.. Jangan sapu minyak angin... Minyak masak pun OK..
I actually not fond of insect screen because it traps so much dust on the surface. Also if insects an issue we just install the electronic repellent device or the incense type thing
Many expats from the Western world are considering Malaysia because of your channel Andrew, please keep up the good work and that wonderful personality of yours. We love y ou.
One thing you don’t experience there like you do in the Philippines. Are power outages, cell phone signal going out especially in the smaller cities. And the infrastructure is bad compared to KL. I agree Malaysia is a developing country definitely not a third world. Great video!
Malaysian here living in the klang valley, 10mins away from KL. I have never encountered a snake in all my years living in a landed property but i guess it depends where your house is located. Obviously if its near heavily wooded areas, u may encounter them. The only insescts that bothers me are mosquitoes. Dengue is endemic in Malaysia so u want to make sure that you are not exposed to the aedes egypti mosquitoes which carry the disease. Simple measures like closing doors and windows at dawn and dusk when they are most active helps alot. I also use an insect repellent spray for my little bud. I thought about why many people dont use window screens. I think it may be because for hundreds of years, our ancestors have never used it so its just not something one considers as important to have in their homes. Less important than having fans, ACs, water heaters, water filter and other things to make life comfortable. Having said that, it is a good idea to have them and u can have it installed easily at your property or ask your landlord if they can consider putting it on for you. You are right about the weather and the rain. Since its usually for short durations, u will see that most Malaysians dont bother with an umbrella. Amazingly, i have never seen the Charlie ant 😅. That is something new i learned from you today. Thanks for posting ❤
Great video as always. The look on your face after that motorcycle passed by is classic! So glad you kept it in the video. Had me laughing so hard. You are probably my favorite RUclipsr so i always look forward to Friday night here in NYC. All the best!
I grew up in a house with screens and have always had screens, most of my family have it too. They don’t come as standard so you need to get someone to install them, but I also understand that most people who don’t want them is because it slows the air flow - as you know we Malaysians like to open all the windows in the evening to let our house cool down. I also grew up in the 70s and 80s drinking the tap water and was surprised during my first overseas trip that this is not safe in many countries. I suppose that it is just the trend in the last 20 years for people to drink bottled water everywhere, even in countries where tap water is supposed to be safe.
You can brush yr teeth with tap water anywhere in Malaysia, many have been using the water dispenser ,well its well promoted by companies from Korea,Yes,u can boil the water n drink, its safe.
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
Thank you Taylor for all your videos. They are very helpful as I explore the possibilities for my upcoming retirement. I have been through SE Asia before but never to Malaysia. I need to come explore. Best wishes!
Hi Taylor, love your videos. I'm a Malaysian who had the privilege to live in New York for work and studies. In general, Islam is the official religion of Malaysia but other religions are free to practice. It is enshrined in the constitution. Even though we have issues here with its imperfections, there are a lot of things that I (or we) should not take for granted. There are things US is good at, the same way as Malaysia is and likewise. Just wondering, what is your favorite Malaysian food and the initial culture shocks when you lived in Malaysia?
Talking about malls and food, we are not a fan of processed food like canned food, packed food etc but it is readily available everywhere. Fresh food is where our appetites are 😂
Great honest review Taylor. Love Malaysian people, food, weather malls and secular state of multi ethinic, religions thats make it unique and her strength. Love Malaysia i would retire there 🇲🇾
Oh my! Taylor, you better sit down for this question. You may have no understanding of this but here goes... we are 2 conservative Gents from Manhattan (originally from St Pete!!!) We're Friends of Dorothy and wondering if Malaysia could be right for us??? We're very discreet in the day to day, but what happens when one of us is hospitalized, which could happen in old age? Are family/spousal rights respected? We're currently in Italy looking at retirement sites and it's just too darned cold here! We'd like to buy you a hot chocolate or maybe a cappuccino so I hope this Super Thanks link works. Thanks for any thoughts that might soothe our trepidation. I'm hoping Malaysia honors the Golden Rule but we clearly wouldn't be in Kansas anymore! You're the best! From 2 NYC fans who adore you! Ciao!
I can't answer all of your concerns, but I can say that Malaysia is recognized as having one of the best, if not the best medical healthcare in the world. Many come to Malaysia for medical travel. You can look it up
Good morning Sir!...like your people!...i'm from Ampang district of Selangor, Malaysia. Come down to Ampang and we meet at "mamak" to enjoy the puri & teh tarik! Cheers!
The bird is Asian Koel or locally known as Burung Tuwu. Malaysia isn't a fully Muslim country as secular law is used in the Constitution and Judiciary. Only certain things involving the Muslims only will subject to Shariah law. I used to drink tap water in the 80s during my school days and still surviving today. Even drinking from the stream! But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it Your face when the bike passed by is Epic! One of our problems for decades 😂😂
not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
Oh, by the way, one thing that your friends from the States haven't been informed is that Malaysia is a motorcycle country, very much like other South East Asian countries. Thousands of them on the road. Some just pass by quietly, and some are loud. But don't worry, people are quick to adjust to their surroundings. In fact it's a cheap form of transportation, and they contribute to the unjamming of the roads and highways. Just imagine if everyone moves by cars and buses only.
Yes, the Malaysian people are the kindest people I've ever met. And on another note... The bird call *might* be the black-naped oriole. When I am in Malaysia, I live just above tree-line near KL and whenever I hear that call, I'll look out the window and often see black-naped orioles flying by. The call on the RUclips videos I have seen is somewhat similar, but usually at a different pitch (which might be explained by the locations, thousands of km away).
The only problem I had in my stay in KLCC was when I running in the park and the security told me to put my shirt on when it was 100 degrees out. People and city and food are really nice.
Funny you said that.I was visiting KL with my partner a few years ago and had a pair of shorts on,I must admit it was very short shorts and I was "advised" by one of the hotel staff to perhaps change to something less revealing. My partner still jokes about that incident to this day!!! 😀😁😂
Hi Andrew. We are coming next month from Queensland. Any great food places in Georgetown you can recommend? Loved watching this. If you are around might catch up for drinks or a meal?
Dear Clark whatever your relationship is, it will be respected as long as it is not in the society face. As far as hospitalisation, as long as you have given authorization for one to act on your behalf, there would be no problem. If you are particular, have a power of attorney document. Cost of healthcare is tremendously cheaper. Premiums for a 40 year old is US 400 annually. If you have retirement visa, you can use the national healthcare system. Prescription drugs for diabetes and hypertension will cost you... I kid you not 5 dollar a month Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes Good luck
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too. It's highly efficient and affordable. About the other issue, nobody bothers whatever you do behind closed doors. Yes, proper documentations is advisable - e.g. a power of attorney document listing your partner as next of Kin for hospitalisation, or have a lawyer to arrange for your will, etc. in case you're worried about this too when the time comes, should have everything covered
Hi Taylor, it is a well produced video. U r actually doing Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism a favor by promoting Malaysia to the whole world thru your videos over the years. When I was a student in the USA in the early 1980s, many American students in my classes didn't know where Malaysia is. Whenever I was asked; I always did reply, Malaysia is located between Thailand n Singapore. They pretty much know Thailand. There was a song in 1984 by Murray Head titled One Night in Bangkok, always being aired by the local radio stations. I mentioned Singapore instead of Indonesia bcos back than, Singapore was already well known internationally as a financial hub. Since the pandemic is over, a lot of Americans n Canadians r visiting and/or residing in Malaysia which is a good thing. Keep up the good work Taylor, we Malaysians really appreciate it v much.
That's the Ampang Hilir lake! I used to live a few metres down the road in front of the Lebanese embassy. Equally confusing was when driving on the right hand side in Texas and Louisiana... Florida too. But I set my brain to laterally inverse the road directions in the UK, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
Taylor, the bird is 100% a magpie or murai in bahasa. The head and top of the body is always black but the chest usually is white but can be in orange colour as well. When you hear them calling in their high pitch sound, you should imitate them initially then you change the tempo or frequency etc, the bird will imitate you. I know these birds very well because they are very noisy and loud but I like them.
2:39 Glad you mentioned this, Taylor. Most foreigners don't know this and many prefer NOT TO KNOW. What's worse is that they usually think that both are the same in terms of cultures, local languages and demographics because foreign media has been fed time and time again with a peninsula-centric version of Malaysia.
Now we had two expats, one from the US (AndrewTaylor) and the another one is from the UK, Saira Hayati... Two good info for others to have a plan to stay here in Malaysia... Maybe, you Andrew should look into it too...😊
Plus Malaysia located in the centre of South East Asia You can easily reach your favourite destinations like Bali , Ho Chin Min or Bangkok in 3-4 hrs or less.😊
I really like your voice and tone, so calming. Good to listen after such a busy day of work and want to rewind at night. Thank you. You reminds me of professor
Mosquitoes bother me in certain seasons in the south, but I use either lavender spray or a citronella because I don’t wanna put on heavy chemicals and it seems to work for me other than that if I don’t put the spray on then the mosquitoes really like me !!
I think if you really get wrapped around the axle about needing certain foods...you probably shouldn't think about retiring ANYWHERE other than where you already are :)
The stingy insect called Charlier only exist nearby paddy field during harvesting season. In KL, it won't be a problem at all. Only be careful if you are in the coutryside, next to paddy field and during harvesting season
HI Taylor, I watched some of your videos , and liked your retirement plans in Malaysia. I as a US citizen who is getting closer to retirement, read that SSA is sending a "questionnaire" either yearly or biannually to SS recipients.to determine if their SSA payment should continue. Given the mail system in Malaysia may not be as developed as mail in US. How difficult is it to receive and respond to this SSA "questionnaire" in Malaysia ? Thanks in advance for your response..
You must visit Kota Kinabalu. It's cool, calm & beautiful. I've been twice to Malaysia and I agree with your thoughts about the place. Didn't notice anyone being rude to anyone. Had food on roadside cheaper outlets and had no stomach issues, reflecting hygiene standards. Keep posting Mr Taylor. Stay blessed Sir.
Hi Taylor. I've been looking into relocating from the U.S. to SE Asia, and watching your videos has got me thinking seriously about making Malaysia my new home base (prevously I was focused on just Thailand and the Philippines). I have a rather oddball question: when I watch videos of people eating at food stalls and in food courts in Malaysia, they seem to be eating exclusively with their right hand, with no utensils. I'm sure this isn't the case in western-style restaurants, but I enjoy eating the local "street" cuisine whenever I travel, and I don't think I'd ever be comfortable eating with my hands. Do these places make utensils available? How do you deal with this, or do you just avoid street food altogether?
Thanks for this great video. Could you or any viewers comment on how welcoming Malaysia is to gay people, especially with its large Muslim population? Are there any issues or concerns?

Another great video, Andrew. So are you saying that except for July and August the humidity the rest of the year isn't bad? Like in the northeast US rather than Florida? I would stay away from the Florida anyway. In NYC it's only uncomfortable in July and August. We like the dry weather in western North America, USA and Canada. You just left out two important issues for another video: reviewing the health insurance coverage options especially for retirees, I do know that Malaysia has excellent healthcare services, so the issue is insurance or paying cash in my 60s. The other issue is the confusion about the ever changing retirement visa options.

Thanks for the informative video, it was interesting how you put it that from the United States it’s around the other side of the world 12,000 miles away !!! I bet doesn’t necessarily bother me. Here’s an idea for a new video unless you already did something similar, do a video of the foods that are most common to Malaysia that you enjoy show pictures and then pronounce the names of them slowly and put the written names across the video because you said two names of Malaysian food, but you said them so fast I didn’t understand you. I’ve never been to Malaysia at all. Thanks 🙏
Hello Taylor, I’ve already subscribed a few months ago, but I didn’t know you originally live in Tampa, I sort of lived nearby, but on the other side of Florida. 🏝
Just a quick question since you’re also a Floridian, I see there are no nonstop flights from Orlando to Kuala Lumpur, would you suggest flying to San Francisco and then to Japan and then over since I don’t wanna fly to Singapore and then a very short flight or is there a different way that I’m not, thinking about ??? I don’t want to change in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m booking myself instead of through a travel agent and thanks for any suggestions and information. I know ultimately I have to make my own decision.
I had to laugh at your comment about the Western food because some of the Asian restaurants here in the USA are what we consider "Americanized Chinese" food. Some of the dishes don't even exist back in our countries, eg Singapore Noodles.
I realise that Islam is the official religion of Malaysia, just not the only religion. 🙏

@@lkh-xj1ck one of my reason is to minimise aircon use.
@@Aeybiseediy "Also if insects an issue we just install the electronic repellent device"
Does it really work to repel insects?
Appreciate your kind gestures to clarify, clear out the misconceptions about Malaysia.
Enjoy the coffee! I'm coming to KL after watching your channel for a few years, can't wait.
Thanks Pete! 🤗
We do have "window screens" if you are referring to "mosquito nets/screens". You'll see it in older design houses.
I can relate to Taylor's expression when the motorcycle passes by. 🤣
😆 - yes, disapproval noted! heheheheeee
Many expats from the Western world are considering Malaysia because of your channel Andrew, please keep up the good work and that wonderful personality of yours. We love y ou.
Taylor you already feel like a friend.
Thanks for the support! 🤗
Thank you Mr Taylor, for promoting Malaysia.❤
One thing you don’t experience there like you do in the Philippines. Are power outages, cell phone signal going out especially in the smaller cities. And the infrastructure is bad compared to KL. I agree Malaysia is a developing country definitely not a third world. Great video!
Malaysia needs more fabulous people like you
Awwww ☺️
Taylor, watching your videos convinced my husband to live here..thank you so much..finally i can live in Malaysia 🇲🇾..❤
That's awesome! ☺️
Great video as always. The look on your face after that motorcycle passed by is classic! So glad you kept it in the video. Had me laughing so hard. You are probably my favorite RUclipsr so i always look forward to Friday night here in NYC. All the best!
Wow, thank you so much! 😊
@@normahibrahim9596 I’ve never boiled the water in Malaysia.. Just drink it straight from the tap or cool it in the fridge first.
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
Thanks! Andrew you're the reason I will move to Malaysia next year. Stay Well & Awesome!!!
Happy to hear that! Thanks for your support! 🤗
Thank you Taylor for all your videos. They are very helpful as I explore the possibilities for my upcoming retirement. I have been through SE Asia before but never to Malaysia. I need to come explore. Best wishes!
You are so welcome! 🤗
Not really any culture shocks. Beef rendang is my favourite Malaysian food. ☺️
@@andrewtaylor4558 beef rendang is good when it free, especially now, raya time 🤣
Talking about malls and food, we are not a fan of processed food like canned food, packed food etc but it is readily available everywhere. Fresh food is where our appetites are 😂
Yep 👍
Many thanks for your videos Taylor! I have found them very helpful in my research for my upcoming retirement. I expect to come over and visit soon.
Best of luck! Thank you so much for your support. 🤗
Thanks Taylor! You assessment is very accurate. As a local, I can vouched for everything you said. Good job! Great having you here!

You can look it up
Thanks so much. Everyone in Malaysia keeps a low profile. It’s not an issue. 😊
Good morning Sir!...like your people!...i'm from Ampang district of Selangor, Malaysia. Come down to Ampang and we meet at "mamak" to enjoy the puri & teh tarik! Cheers!
Hi Taylor! Thanks for the video. You always manage to make my day brighter!
You are so welcome! 🤗
I love the East side with mt Kinabalu .. Sarawak etc and everything else there is so peaceful and beautiful
But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it
Your face when the bike passed by is Epic! One of our problems for decades 😂😂
Thank you very much, Taylor. Crystal clear on your explanation on those issues brought up...👍🏼
This video makes me wanna be your neighbor, Andy. You are a so down to earth type of people. Have a wonderful day there in KL, my friend.

not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
I totally agree but I have a harder time getting women to go on camera! 🤗
This is Malaysia 101. Appreciate your perspective. Also appreciate you adding a picture of Earl Grey. Cheers to you and to Earl Grey.
I live in Washington D.C. area and love summer here. Give me heat and humidity. I hate winter.
Hello from the Jewel of Kedah. Love the video. Love the scenery. How large is this park?
Pretty small. ☺️
My favorite bug there is the large rhino Beatles .. very cool
Thanks Taylor. What about geckos in homes? I am ok with them out of the home but can’t handle them in the home.
Oh, Geckos are cute and they eat bugs! 🤗
Call of Asian Koel better !
The only problem I had in my stay in KLCC was when I running in the park and the security told me to put my shirt on when it was 100 degrees out. People and city and food are really nice.
a loose singlets will do
Funny you said that.I was visiting KL with my partner a few years ago and had a pair of shorts on,I must admit it was very short shorts and I was "advised" by one of the hotel staff to perhaps change to something less revealing. My partner still jokes about that incident to this day!!! 😀😁😂
Its a general rule in any Asian country to dress fairly modest - nudity or semi nudity is a bid no
Genting highlands is not really 'quiet'. It's where Malaysians go to for their theme parks and casinos.
Hi Andrew. We are coming next month from Queensland. Any great food places in Georgetown you can recommend? Loved watching this. If you are around might catch up for drinks or a meal?
Thanks but too many to list. You can hardly go wrong in Penang. Thanks for watching!
Lots of love, Tay! ❤
thanks Andrew for the nice video.

I kid you not 5 dollar a month
Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes
Good luck
You're very kind for taking the time to reply to me and I thank you
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too.
When I choose an accommodation, I like to choose at least 6th floor and above. When you are high up, there is no mosquito.
Good plan!
Wow! Amazing Andrew! 23k views in just 2 days❤
Yep. I can never predict! 😂
Taylor ..unofficial ambassador of Malaysia😅😅😅. Thank you
I totally agree, the infrastructure is extrordinary! Metro, railways, roads, buildings Merdeka 118 AND the reclaimed islands on Penang.
Thank you so much 😊
I am from Penang and KL but neve4 encountered the Charlie ants which is a beetle. Learned something new!
Hope you never do! 😂
Hello from Atlanta, GA! Hope to be there one day!

Thanks for your great work!
Thank you so much for your support! 🤗
Listening to you from Tampa Florida
Heard you had some crazy rain. My sister lives on the river and the water highest in over 30 years!
Now we had two expats, one from the US (AndrewTaylor) and the another one is from the UK, Saira Hayati... Two good info for others to have a plan to stay here in Malaysia... Maybe, you Andrew should look into it too...😊

Mosquitoes bother me in certain seasons in the south, but I use either lavender spray or a citronella because I don’t wanna put on heavy chemicals and it seems to work for me other than that if I don’t put the spray on then the mosquitoes really like me !!
Sounds like you worked it out! ☺️
Exactly! The rains help to deal with the heat. Thank you
Yes it does! 🤗
That bird calling in the park is called Commin Koel. The male is blackish. The female is brownish with some faint stripes.
As a matter of habits start your day early and by the time the heat kicks in you get indoors. Hence the number of malls in Malaysia
I think if you really get wrapped around the axle about needing certain foods...you probably shouldn't think about retiring ANYWHERE other than where you already are :)
So true. 😂

So far I have no problem receiving the form. 🤗

You can get utensils. I eat only a few things with my hands. I’m used to seeing others do it tho.
I like your positivity, Sir.
I appreciate that ☺️
Thanks for this great video.

That is awesome! ☺️
I had to laugh at your comment about the Western food because some of the Asian restaurants here in the USA are what we consider "Americanized Chinese" food. Some of the dishes don't even exist back in our countries, eg Singapore Noodles.
