I am back in Penang for a couple of months. I looked at real estate in KL last month. Lots of traffic in KL. I grew up in the south and spent a lot of time in DC, too, but I still can't get use to the heat in Malaysia. I lived at the town center in Reston and I never found it as hot as it is here. I was walking around the town center all the time. I'm staying at Island Plaza. As fare as I can see: No bugs here ...not one. The apartment I rented is pretty spotless,. Island plaza has opened up a dozen or more restaurants and there are two groceries nearby so I am comfy here. It looks like more restaurants to come! The bird is known as the Asian Koel, or 'Burung Tuwu' in Malay. Indeed, the Charlie Ant/Rove beetle appears to be more prevalent in Penang. During my years living in Melaka, I never encountered them. Their abundance may be due to the paddy fields in Kedah, which provide an ideal breeding ground. Regarding the window screens, they are indeed challenging to find one. I had to DIY create them myself, and locally, we typically refer to them as mosquito nets.
On the topic of mosquito net, modern houses with air-cond don't need them because the inhabitants can just close all the doors & windows and then turn on the air-cond. While for traditional houses, especially village style wooden houses, they did use mosquito net, just not on the windows, but over the beds! Much easier to set up and doesn't require extensive installation fee.

The bird is Asian Koel or locally known as Burung Tuwu. Malaysia isn't a fully Muslim country as secular law is used in the Constitution and Judiciary. Only certain things involving the Muslims only will subject to Shariah law. I used to drink tap water in the 80s during my school days and still surviving today. Even drinking from the stream! But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it Your face when the bike passed by is Epic! One of our problems for decades 😂😂
Ive lived in Malaysia for a year now . Driving on the other side of the road is very natural now . I’ve met a lot of friendly people that have been very welcoming . Thanks for all you do Andrew
Driving on the other side of the road will take some time to get used to for me I think. Also getting used to the way people drive there. I cringe every time my brother drives me around KL.

Hi Taylor, love your videos. I'm a Malaysian who had the privilege to live in New York for work and studies. In general, Islam is the official religion of Malaysia but other religions are free to practice. It is enshrined in the constitution. Even though we have issues here with its imperfections, there are a lot of things that I (or we) should not take for granted. There are things US is good at, the same way as Malaysia is and likewise. Just wondering, what is your favorite Malaysian food and the initial culture shocks when you lived in Malaysia?
Good morning Sir!...like your people!...i'm from Ampang district of Selangor, Malaysia. Come down to Ampang and we meet at "mamak" to enjoy the puri & teh tarik! Cheers!
Malaysian here living in the klang valley, 10mins away from KL. I have never encountered a snake in all my years living in a landed property but i guess it depends where your house is located. Obviously if its near heavily wooded areas, u may encounter them. The only insescts that bothers me are mosquitoes. Dengue is endemic in Malaysia so u want to make sure that you are not exposed to the aedes egypti mosquitoes which carry the disease. Simple measures like closing doors and windows at dawn and dusk when they are most active helps alot. I also use an insect repellent spray for my little bud. I thought about why many people dont use window screens. I think it may be because for hundreds of years, our ancestors have never used it so its just not something one considers as important to have in their homes. Less important than having fans, ACs, water heaters, water filter and other things to make life comfortable. Having said that, it is a good idea to have them and u can have it installed easily at your property or ask your landlord if they can consider putting it on for you. You are right about the weather and the rain. Since its usually for short durations, u will see that most Malaysians dont bother with an umbrella. Amazingly, i have never seen the Charlie ant 😅. That is something new i learned from you today. Thanks for posting ❤
Hi Taylor, not sure how I ended up on your channel but I love it here and I am staying 😅. I lived in Indonesia for 3.5yrs and I loved it. So good to see you living and thriving in Malaysia ❤
Oh my! Taylor, you better sit down for this question. You may have no understanding of this but here goes... we are 2 conservative Gents from Manhattan (originally from St Pete!!!) We're Friends of Dorothy and wondering if Malaysia could be right for us??? We're very discreet in the day to day, but what happens when one of us is hospitalized, which could happen in old age? Are family/spousal rights respected? We're currently in Italy looking at retirement sites and it's just too darned cold here! We'd like to buy you a hot chocolate or maybe a cappuccino so I hope this Super Thanks link works. Thanks for any thoughts that might soothe our trepidation. I'm hoping Malaysia honors the Golden Rule but we clearly wouldn't be in Kansas anymore! You're the best! From 2 NYC fans who adore you! Ciao!
I can't answer all of your concerns, but I can say that Malaysia is recognized as having one of the best, if not the best medical healthcare in the world. Many come to Malaysia for medical travel. You can look it up
I'm from Ipoh My name is TAN I like your video and you are also friendly and I like to be your friend and follower, 🤗 I come across you mention Pls let you know and comment what is that sound above... This sound is make by a bird.. The bird is call Yellow Bird Maybe I can send you the bird Pic for you to see.. Let me search and I will send to you ASAP.. Bye..
I grew up in a house with screens and have always had screens, most of my family have it too. They don’t come as standard so you need to get someone to install them, but I also understand that most people who don’t want them is because it slows the air flow - as you know we Malaysians like to open all the windows in the evening to let our house cool down. I also grew up in the 70s and 80s drinking the tap water and was surprised during my first overseas trip that this is not safe in many countries. I suppose that it is just the trend in the last 20 years for people to drink bottled water everywhere, even in countries where tap water is supposed to be safe.
You can brush yr teeth with tap water anywhere in Malaysia, many have been using the water dispenser ,well its well promoted by companies from Korea,Yes,u can boil the water n drink, its safe.
I think if you really get wrapped around the axle about needing certain foods...you probably shouldn't think about retiring ANYWHERE other than where you already are :)
Yes, the Malaysian people are the kindest people I've ever met. And on another note... The bird call *might* be the black-naped oriole. When I am in Malaysia, I live just above tree-line near KL and whenever I hear that call, I'll look out the window and often see black-naped orioles flying by. The call on the RUclips videos I have seen is somewhat similar, but usually at a different pitch (which might be explained by the locations, thousands of km away).
Dear Clark whatever your relationship is, it will be respected as long as it is not in the society face. As far as hospitalisation, as long as you have given authorization for one to act on your behalf, there would be no problem. If you are particular, have a power of attorney document. Cost of healthcare is tremendously cheaper. Premiums for a 40 year old is US 400 annually. If you have retirement visa, you can use the national healthcare system. Prescription drugs for diabetes and hypertension will cost you... I kid you not 5 dollar a month Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes Good luck
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too. It's highly efficient and affordable. About the other issue, nobody bothers whatever you do behind closed doors. Yes, proper documentations is advisable - e.g. a power of attorney document listing your partner as next of Kin for hospitalisation, or have a lawyer to arrange for your will, etc. in case you're worried about this too when the time comes, should have everything covered
Great honest review Taylor. Love Malaysian people, food, weather malls and secular state of multi ethinic, religions thats make it unique and her strength. Love Malaysia i would retire there 🇲🇾
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
Thanks for this great video. Could you or any viewers comment on how welcoming Malaysia is to gay people, especially with its large Muslim population? Are there any issues or concerns?
As a retiree how do you occupy yourself there? Is there a large expat group you socialize with? I heard they changed the residency requirements for retirees so Malaysia might not be an option anymore. However, I would like to slow travel there.
Oh, by the way, one thing that your friends from the States haven't been informed is that Malaysia is a motorcycle country, very much like other South East Asian countries. Thousands of them on the road. Some just pass by quietly, and some are loud. But don't worry, people are quick to adjust to their surroundings. In fact it's a cheap form of transportation, and they contribute to the unjamming of the roads and highways. Just imagine if everyone moves by cars and buses only.
Why are you acting as a chamber of commerce for Maylaysia ? Is Maylaysia contributing to your revenue stream? Maylaysia does not offer permanent residency except to the wealthiest expats. As an American would I have to pay taxes to Maylasia as well as the USA on my US pension and social security.
Malaysia's legal system operates as a secular state. Malaysia practises secularism and, therefore, is unequivocally a secular and not an Islamic state.
1.Malaysia is not a Muslim country BUT it is a muslim majority country. 2. Shariah Law only applied to Muslim. Never applied to Non-Muslim. That is according to the religion itself. However if some countries (eg Islam Country with muslim population > 90%) decide to do otherwise (mainly for convenience purposes), it is their own decision and shouldn't be blamed on the religion. That is why in the Islamic Empire from 7th till 13th centuries, the non-muslims (Christians and Jews) have to pay jizyah tax, because the zakat tax cannot be applied to them, only to the Muslim. 3. Secular. Maybe I agree for lay-men definition but actually it is not. A lot of religion and cultural factors influence the law in Malaysia but it is basic and common that people don't realise it (like it is illegal to commit murder or rape, issues concerning marital & inheritance etc). The other reason is because the Shariah law is only applied to the Muslims (inheritance, marital, alm-tax/zakat, fasting etc). So, people don't realise it. For Zakat (alm-tax), the Muslim citizen in Malaysia must pay Zakat Tax and Income Tax (balance) but for the Non-muslim citizen, they only pay Income Tax. Unfortunately, most Non-Muslim are influenced by the scare-mongering about Shariah Law by the media. For Non_muslim in Malaysia, they fully fall under the federal law.
Thanks Andy. Great info from you. Lots info from you. American or other European guys will at least know better from Andy experience. Have a great weekend 😊
If there are tensions, it comes from some politicians who try to rile up or divide the races using religion because they want votes. Regular people like us have very little issue with each other. In Malaysia, u can find a mosque, church, buddhist temple, hindu temple all in one street or area/neighbourhood. I live in the suburbs of KL and I'd say my neighbourhood is 40% Malay, 30% Chinese, 20% Indian and 10% foreigners. I've been living in this area for over 20 yrs and there's never been a religion or racial related problem here👍👍
I really like your voice and tone, so calming. Good to listen after such a busy day of work and want to rewind at night. Thank you. You reminds me of professor
It's great to hear what it's really like in Malaysia. I"m thinking of retiring there. I understand what you're saying about religion. I"m wondering if you could comment on views on gay life in Malaysia. Thx for your great videos!
Did you have a motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license in the u.s. or did you learn in Malaysia? I would be interested in the process of how to get a scooter license because if I get a vehicle, it won't be a car, but a scooter. Did you own your own scooter before you got licensed? In CA, the motorcycle classes were only done with full size motorcycles, is that true in Malaysia? Thanks for your videos.
Regarding mosquitoes, wear long pants n long-sleeved clothing at dusk and night. We malays always joke that those who are always bitten by mosquitoes, have 'sweet' blood. As for the heat, shower regularly and drink plenty of water and fruits. The local fruits are abundant and year round.

The stingy insect called Charlier only exist nearby paddy field during harvesting season. In KL, it won't be a problem at all. Only be careful if you are in the coutryside, next to paddy field and during harvesting season
I had to laugh at your comment about the Western food because some of the Asian restaurants here in the USA are what we consider "Americanized Chinese" food. Some of the dishes don't even exist back in our countries, eg Singapore Noodles.
The only problem I had in my stay in KLCC was when I running in the park and the security told me to put my shirt on when it was 100 degrees out. People and city and food are really nice.
Funny you said that.I was visiting KL with my partner a few years ago and had a pair of shorts on,I must admit it was very short shorts and I was "advised" by one of the hotel staff to perhaps change to something less revealing. My partner still jokes about that incident to this day!!! 😀😁😂
Terrific video. Your point about it being a "Muslim country" I suspect the reason you encounter that from outsiders is because the Muslim faith is the one that is most practiced there and outsiders just assume, wrongly, that the country operates as some sort of theocracy. Been to Malaysia many times but staying long term is challenging. It seems to me one has to have a lot of money and steady income to get one of those long term visas and the digital nomad visa doesn't apply to me .
Taylor, the bird is 100% a magpie or murai in bahasa. The head and top of the body is always black but the chest usually is white but can be in orange colour as well. When you hear them calling in their high pitch sound, you should imitate them initially then you change the tempo or frequency etc, the bird will imitate you. I know these birds very well because they are very noisy and loud but I like them.

TRUE. Malaysians are very warm and kind hearted people. They are always ready to help a senior citizen like me. Thank you for this lovely video.
Ooooh your expression when the noisy motorcycle passed by! Just like mine, too.
I tell myself that they are a test on my patience by Allah swt and the riders were youngsters who didn't realise their behaviour were disruptive. It helped me to quickly forgive them and calm myself. Enjoy your stay here.
Lovely thoughts. 🤗
But it's better to boil the water first before drinking it
Your face when the bike passed by is Epic!
Love this video! I met some great friends while I was there! The grab drivers were very nice and even stopped for me to take pictures! I can’t wait to get to Malaysia 🇲🇾 Thank you too Andy!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Great video as always. The look on your face after that motorcycle passed by is classic! So glad you kept it in the video. Had me laughing so hard. You are probably my favorite RUclipsr so i always look forward to Friday night here in NYC. All the best!
Wow, thank you so much! 😊
Talking about malls and food, we are not a fan of processed food like canned food, packed food etc but it is readily available everywhere. Fresh food is where our appetites are 😂
Yep 👍
Now we had two expats, one from the US (AndrewTaylor) and the another one is from the UK, Saira Hayati... Two good info for others to have a plan to stay here in Malaysia... Maybe, you Andrew should look into it too...😊
Saira is speaking as pakistani british muslim, Andrew speaking as non-muslim american. Different point of view.
Plus Malaysia located in the centre of South East Asia
You can easily reach your favourite destinations like Bali , Ho Chin Min or Bangkok in 3-4 hrs or less.😊
Not really any culture shocks. Beef rendang is my favourite Malaysian food. ☺️
@@andrewtaylor4558 beef rendang is good when it free, especially now, raya time 🤣
Good morning Sir!...like your people!...i'm from Ampang district of Selangor, Malaysia. Come down to Ampang and we meet at "mamak" to enjoy the puri & teh tarik! Cheers!

Welcome!! 🤗
Thank you Mr Taylor, for promoting Malaysia.❤
Appreciate your kind gestures to clarify, clear out the misconceptions about Malaysia.
We do have "window screens" if you are referring to "mosquito nets/screens". You'll see it in older design houses.
I live in Washington D.C. area and love summer here. Give me heat and humidity. I hate winter.
You can look it up
Thanks so much. Everyone in Malaysia keeps a low profile. It’s not an issue. 😊

Taylor, watching your videos convinced my husband to live here..thank you so much..finally i can live in Malaysia 🇲🇾..❤
That's awesome! ☺️
My favorite bug there is the large rhino Beatles .. very cool
I love the East side with mt Kinabalu .. Sarawak etc and everything else there is so peaceful and beautiful
@@normahibrahim9596 I’ve never boiled the water in Malaysia.. Just drink it straight from the tap or cool it in the fridge first.
I think if you really get wrapped around the axle about needing certain foods...you probably shouldn't think about retiring ANYWHERE other than where you already are :)
So true. 😂
Call of Asian Koel better !
I kid you not 5 dollar a month
Last point there is no capital gains tax, nor is there any inheritance taxes
Good luck
You're very kind for taking the time to reply to me and I thank you
@montgomeryclark7531 Taylor has some videos on the Malaysian healthcare system previously, you could check out those videos and some other expats' too.
Love Malaysia i would retire there 🇲🇾
Malaysia needs more fabulous people like you
Awwww ☺️
Hello from Atlanta, GA! Hope to be there one day!
When i was in Malaysia in the early 80s, the tap water tasted like it came from mountain springs and it did not have a hint of chlorine taste in it. I miss Malaysian water in the US
Genting highlands is not really 'quiet'. It's where Malaysians go to for their theme parks and casinos.
not many people go back and watch all of the old videos. Doing the same topic every so often is a good thing in my opinion. Thanks for your videos! I wish you could sit with some more female expats that have moved there.
I totally agree but I have a harder time getting women to go on camera! 🤗
Im sure you can get most of the imported grocery brands down the road from your condo, Hock Choon supermarket.
Yep
Thanks for this great video. Could you or any viewers comment on how welcoming Malaysia is to gay people, especially with its large Muslim population? Are there any issues or concerns?
While you can’t be super open about it, it generally it is not a problem. ☺️
The bird is the cuckoo. It’s a bird of spring time, that’s when they sing for mating.
Not a cuckoo... someone already answered, it is the koel! You can google to see the male and female koel, they look different entirely.
As a matter of habits start your day early and by the time the heat kicks in you get indoors. Hence the number of malls in Malaysia
As a retiree how do you occupy yourself there? Is there a large expat group you socialize with? I heard they changed the residency requirements for retirees so Malaysia might not be an option anymore. However, I would like to slow travel there.
I have a small group of close friends. I keep pretty busy with RUclips!
No, we do not pay taxes on money earned outside the country. Also, long term visa fine with me. 😊
Malaysia is a Muslim country. Just that Malaysia has freedom of religion.
Malaysia's legal system operates as a secular state. Malaysia practises secularism and, therefore, is unequivocally a secular and not an Islamic state.
Thanks Taylor. What about geckos in homes? I am ok with them out of the home but can’t handle them in the home.
Oh, Geckos are cute and they eat bugs! 🤗
Thanks for the info!
Thanks Andy. Great info from you. Lots info from you. American or other European guys will at least know better from Andy experience. Have a great weekend 😊

Hi.. Nora here😂
Hi Taylor! Thanks for the video. You always manage to make my day brighter!
You are so welcome! 🤗
Lets Penang n KL be underatted ..when to many tourist came here its happened in Bali is out of control.
Please don't try to compare Bali
This is different
Bali is a tourist spot
Penang and KL are immigrant cities
Here's your cup of coffee 😅
Thanks so much 🙏
If there are tensions, it comes from some politicians who try to rile up or divide the races using religion because they want votes. I've been living in this area for over 20 yrs and there's never been a religion or racial related problem here👍👍
So nice to hear! 🤗
Hey mate it's a Cuckoo bird...cheers///
thanks Andrew for the nice video.
and not too late to wish u and all people a Happy Eid. 🙏
I really like your voice and tone, so calming. Good to listen after such a busy day of work and want to rewind at night. Thank you. You reminds me of professor
Wow, thank you! ☺️
It's great to hear what it's really like in Malaysia. I"m thinking of retiring there. I understand what you're saying about religion. I"m wondering if you could comment on views on gay life in Malaysia. Thx for your great videos!
Penang has many delicious food
Pitrajeya has a beautiful pink mosque floating on a lake
I dont fancy those “twin peak” petronas towers
Did you have a motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license in the u.s. or did you learn in Malaysia? I would be interested in the process of how to get a scooter license because if I get a vehicle, it won't be a car, but a scooter. Did you own your own scooter before you got licensed? In CA, the motorcycle classes were only done with full size motorcycles, is that true in Malaysia? Thanks for your videos.
I have a motorcycle license from Florida and a car driving license in Malaysia. So far no problems. Testing in Malaysia is done on 110cc bikes.
The bird at 11.30 is the Asian Koel, also known as the "uwu" bird.
its a beutiful yellow color with a patch of black bird, dont know whats its name, its doing a pest control in KL,
Regarding mosquitoes, wear long pants n long-sleeved clothing at dusk and night. We malays always joke that those who are always bitten by mosquitoes, have 'sweet' blood.
As for the heat, shower regularly and drink plenty of water and fruits. The local fruits are abundant and year round.

What is past is past and rejected. The present is king, recognize reality. Tomorrow is not real yet. Malaysia will make you a king and achieve paradise on earth where you will never retire.

Yep 😂
The only problem I had in my stay in KLCC was when I running in the park and the security told me to put my shirt on when it was 100 degrees out. People and city and food are really nice.
a loose singlets will do
Funny you said that.I was visiting KL with my partner a few years ago and had a pair of shorts on,I must admit it was very short shorts and I was "advised" by one of the hotel staff to perhaps change to something less revealing. My partner still jokes about that incident to this day!!! 😀😁😂
Its a general rule in any Asian country to dress fairly modest - nudity or semi nudity is a bid no
I like your positivity, Sir.
I appreciate that ☺️

I totally agree, the infrastructure is extrordinary! Metro, railways, roads, buildings Merdeka 118 AND the reclaimed islands on Penang.
Malaysia as a person’s first name is kind of popular among the black communities in the US.
Interesting
I hv heard that
Terrific video.
Your point about it being a "Muslim country"
I suspect the reason you encounter that from outsiders is because the Muslim faith is the one that is most practiced there and outsiders just assume, wrongly, that the country operates as some sort of theocracy.
Been to Malaysia many times but staying long term is challenging. It seems to me one has to have a lot of money and steady income to get one of those long term visas and the digital nomad visa doesn't apply to me .
Thanks Taylor !!
One thing about Malaysia, u don't really have to water your plants in the garden since it rains so often😅😅
True!
Looking forward to those Taylor's Tritan Insulated Glasses Inc.😉
This is Malaysia 101. Appreciate your perspective. Also appreciate you adding a picture of Earl Grey. Cheers to you and to Earl Grey.
Thanks! Andrew you're the reason I will move to Malaysia next year. Stay Well & Awesome!!!
Happy to hear that! Thanks for your support! 🤗
