    I grew up with Link's Awakening and bought the remake because nostalgia. But damn, they did an incredible job staying true to the original. The combat is different but somehow feels similar, the soundtrack in my opinion fits with the theme of the game. I expected them to take more creative liberties but it's remarkable how little has changed. All the way down to minor stuff like butterflies, hit detection on certain enemies, audio embellishments in sound effects and the countless little themes that you hear. I'd gladly pay a full $60 again for remakes of the oracle games or minish cap, though those might warrant an art style change.

    • @rendelldraw
      @rendelldraw 4 года назад +5

      I think I won't mind if they reuse some of the assets here similar to how Oracles reused stuff from LA just so I could get it sooner. Lol!
      But it'd be great if they do copy the art style used in the animated cutscenes -- which I think might be tricky because having tall characters might not go well with the tile size, moving speed, etc.

    I know there’s always a lot of criticism for remaking old games as opposed to making new ones, but I really appreciate it. I never got to play this game- or any other Zelda game- until the consoles they were released on were obsolete. But now as an adult renaming these games makes them easily accessible to younger generations and even people like myself who weren’t lucky enough to grow up with them.

    Nice comparison, I appreciate the work. it's an amazing port really. It has the exact same object sizes down to a grid but adds charming graphics, vastly improved music, sound and atmosphere. The controls are tighter too and doing battle is more intuitive thanks to smoother characters movements. The fights are actually pretty fun in a simple way. Classic arcade type fighting in a sense.
    The one blemish is the lag when loading new areas... it's smooth otherwise. It just seems to be when you're scrolling around too fast. So on that front I'm a tiny bit disappointed it's not a 100% polished example of how to do a remake.

    Here at my 20s this game is my first ever approach to a Zelda game, only up until now that I got a Switch (the game came bundled in, as a 2nd hand purchase). Not even an RPG fan but this is the first game to make me like an RPG because it feels smooth, slightly complicated, then I was so interested to see what it looked like back in the day and gosh now I see why it's such a highly scored game in reviews!! For the fact that the original is as good, I think it deserves the remake, otherwise, new generations of players like me wouldn't go empty-handed when thinking of trying a Zelda for the first time 🤧✨

    • @Robotoda2000
      @Robotoda2000 Год назад +1

      Link's Awakening was my second Zelda game. I played it after A Link to the Past on the SNES. It may have basic simple graphics on the Gameboy. But behind the simple graphics was a very well designed game that gave the player a console like experience. It proved that even the most underpowered system could deliver an epic adventure. Something Nintendo has historically been good at. They didn't really concern themselves with processing power back during the NES, Gameboy and SNES days. Just like with the Switch now. I really recommend you give Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country on the SNES a try. Those games are timeless when it comes to actual game design and gameplay.

    LOL@audio comments. This is what you get when a whole generation is fully conditioned to listening to any kind of sound in lossy formats and over earbuds and smartphone speakers only. They'll come up and tell you that 8 bit chirps sound better than a proper soundtrack that uses natural instruments.

    • @Luschan
      @Luschan 4 года назад +1

      This is such a weird stance to take lmao. “Kids these days” don’t care about 8-bit chiptune music, if anything they’d think it sounds weird and lame.
      The only people putting 8-bit on a pedestal are 30-40 yr old dorks who grew up on it. I’m not even defending it, your comment just blew me away.

    • @honigdachs.
      @honigdachs. 4 года назад

      @@Luschan What I criticized is the fact that many people seem to prefer the old GB soundtrack to the one that's in the new version of the game. The notion is obviously there, I didn't make that up. Of course, some of the comments are surely coming from a place of nostalgia as well, but I seriously doubt all these comments are from +40 yr folks. Today's listening habits are much attuned to two-dimensional sounds from synthesized sound sources, which is why people don't know how to listen to recordings of natural instruments. Something chirpy and synthetic appeals to them more. That has nothing to do with Chiptune. Besides, there's tons of people out there who are really into that faux-8/16 bit thing, and whenever there's talk of awesome game soundtracks, all the hip indie games with their chirpy scores always come up. Obviously people do like that kind of stuff.

    I _far_ prefer the GBC version , to the point that I totally snubbed the 'Remake'. The feels I got from the OG were on point - 1st the visuals had this Wonderful, 'Serious' edge and tone to the pixels that lent an amazing vibe that these new Skool mainstream 'Cartoon chiibi' visuals simply wash totally away. I'm left with a sterile, almost comic looking game. Sorry to mini Rant but I really despise the cartoon plastic reformed Lego look. and you simply _cannot_ mess with and 'jazz up' the OG music like the Remake did, destroyed any remnants of Charm the Remake had left and the overall experience for me. The hard boiled beats and bass of the old Eyesore cannot be beaten! 🎉 Metroid Beyond does the 'cel Enhanced cartoon / Serious hybrid edge so well, in fact, Perfectly! Just sad that the teams behind these top down Zelda games cannot nearly replicate that tone.

    I think it was a good idea making a remake. However, I think the original from Game Boy Classic is more attractive. The new version is good, but it resembles Lego or Playmobil design. It resembles plastic toys and not the epic universe of Zelda. It would be better if it had a Minish Cap art style, but enhanced and 3d, of course.

      I think part of it has to do with the visuals. The Switch version shows everything in huge amounts of detail, and the dreamy toy esthetics are everywhere to see (which are absolutely gorgeous and fitting). The GameBoy's visuals leave enough room for your imagination to fill the gaps. After playing a few minutes you don't see a pixelated tile based world. You form your own vision of the world as you play it. That's at least how I experienced the game as a kid. Still, this is a remake done right. It's bringing tears to my eyes.

      IanPickett True Zelda champion well I never played the original so I have no nostalgia to begin with, so I can look at both Version equally and here are my thoughts:
      Obviously the graphics are gorgeous and on point in the remake, the Soundtrack is a bit mixed. The Boss music and some other tracks are not that good in the remake but then there is osts like the Face Shrine who are really stunning and way better. I also couldn't understand the hype around the ballade of the windfish. It was just unbearable random gameboy beeping for me, but since Marin actually sings in the remake and the 8 instruments really are instruments and not beeping it is just beautiful. Also the quality of life changes in the gameplay are so so mich needed. I could not stand always swapping between the sword shield and the items just to do anything. I can imagine that the original was just one menu pressing exercise (especially with Bossfights like the one in Level 5😵).
      What is also way better is that each house is so carefully detailed, fitting to the person that lives there. Like for example 5:05 where the house of the witch is not a square with pots overload and instead has items and other things fitting for a witch in it. Also the Dungeon Maker is pretty fun.
      So overall the remake is better. The gameplay is way less painful, the visuals are extremely beautiful, the sound design is top notch, only the ost has strengths and weaknesses.
      (Something that bugs me in the original is the secret ending. There we see Marin in the sky but what bugs me is her look in the original. She looks like this 😬 or 😲, but in the remake she actually smiles 😊 which is way better. Maybe this is just me but thats how it looks for me 🤣.)
