An ambulance driving on the field and running over players just to reach toward the injured player? That is not only hilarious, but really hardcore! XD
I am 37 years old, born in 1987, so when I think about NFL Madden games I think about Madden 92, 95. Those are the games I played the most with my brother as a kid. As I got older, I remember playing Madden 2004 for the PS2
Excellent overview. We don't play "Football" in Europe so seeing videos like this is always very educational. I want to see that ambulance in other EA titles too. =D
Awesome to see a new video man! I really like it when you do this style of vid, kinda like when you covered wrestling games. You really do a good job of covering the evolution of the series/genre. Very cool stuff!
The pre-season mode in 92 disables play clock penalties. 92 and 93 are my jam, they're the perfect mix of arcade and simulation and they're just fun to play. 95 was the one I owned as a kid (I only rented the others) and I love it and consider it the best 16-bit football sim but I prefer the less realistic older titles when I just want to sit down and have fun. Loved that Sega version of the Fox Sports theme though. Great video, in an era where Madden has become somewhat of a joke it's nice to go back and remember the classic installments that built it up in the first place.
Then you really have to play "Mutant League Football" for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. That's as unrealistic yet fun as it gets. But maybe you've already gave that one a go... :^)
The older versions with the receiver windows did show how many yards the receiver was down field. It was shown by a little meter on the side of each receiver window.
If I could combine the gameplay/sprites/flow of the first three JMF games, the roster/teams/FOX theme music of 95 (1994 season), and the A.I. of 98, that would be my dream 16-bit NFL game. But whichever ones you had as a kid, those are always the ones that hit the hardest as an adult; the brain trip triggered by the memories and associations easily outweighs the minor differences that were year-to-year. John Madden Football (the first game) is the one I had, and to fire it back up is such a powerful experience I can't put into words. I can be much more objective about SNES games, because I didn't have a SNES.
@@vinceniederman Completely depends on what you're looking for. If you want all the bells & whistles of franchise mode, then 97 or 98 (they're basically the same). If you want a faster arcade-style game then you can't go wrong with '95. If you want a more methodical-paced game, then '92 or '93.
I wonder if he'd take on the NHL EA games in the near future as well. I remember Madden NFL 95 quite well. My dad bought it for my brother and I, since we were all NFL fans and it still holds up nicely. It even had a fold-in poster of all the teams with a brief synopsis about them and their best key plays. Good stuff!
I always say Madden 95 was the best too even know 94 gets all the praise. Same with NHL was better to me than NHl 94. 96 had fighting and much more back.
Madden 95 + ambulance or helicopter would be so cool! I personally love 95 and sometimes I just play as the (then secret) jaguars and destroy the computer by 300pts hahaha
I definitely agree with these reviews. Madden 92 and 97 were my favorites on Genesis. I play the 92 version for Walter Payton (wink, wink) and the Killer Ambulance of Death, and the 97 edition is the most refined and evolved of the era. My interest in the series waned in the following years, and to be honest, I'd rather be playing the NFL 2K series instead. Today, of course, we have no other choice than Madden, which is precisely why the series has stagnated for at least a decade. I prefer the 16-bit era when EA was hungry and fighting for dominance.
The early-to-mid aughts versions of Madden were really good too due to that competition. Things started to go downhill once EA got their monopoly going.
@@rocko7x Championship Edition is Madden '93 with a full roster of Super Bowl winning and runner up teams so you can pit legendary teams against each other. Like '93 it lacks the ambulance unfortunately.
The graphic that cuts in and shows where your receivers are ruin the early titles for me. I guess you can get used to it but there's no way to see what's around them. Thankfully I own 97.
That was the only one that I was asking about. Since this review was about the Genesis versions, what makes you think I care about any PS1 versions? Championship Edition was the only one for the Genesis that AqualungGameReviews missed.
The first genesis Madden was almost impossible to use the run game. The second Madden made it too easy to run. The third Madden balanced the run/pass game. To say almost no differences is misleading.

The Only Thing About Madden 96 I Don't Like is The Fast Gameplay!

That was my favorite part of the game. Unfortunately, years later EA took it out.

the joe montana genesis games i believe were the first to have commentary.

Alot less popular, Bill Walsh 95 is the best football game on Genesis, it's a mix of Madden 94 and Madden 95.
I agree. It's the perfect compromise between those two games. Definitely my #1 Genesis football game.
The gfx in Madden 91-93 were SO much better than 94. Looks like a kid drew the 94 sprites.

I liked Sega Sports better back then. The Joe Montana games, and Prime Time NFL 96 was my favorite. Madden has always been the "other" guy to me.

In this era, I was more of a "Tecmo Super Bowl" person, but I can like the early Madden games too. It think I liked the 1997 game the best.
By that time it was also out on Playstation
I love this detailed review of the series! Looking forward to more!
This review was very helpful in deciding which madden games to try. Thank you for making this! Excellent work!
95 was the best... Gameplay and all. Today's Madden I don't even control defense takes them out of position.
I'm Hoping Madden 95 Works For My Mini Sega Like Madden 94 Does Once I Get Madden 95!
Best 16-bit era football game by a mile is NFL 94' Starring Joe Montana.
Tbh, I kind of wish 93 only added the coin flip if not only so that the whole review would be "It adds a coin flip" *Cut to grade*
The guitar riff to Aqualung..you can say anything afterwards and it always works!!

It was only a couple years ago that I realized John Madden Football predates TECMO Super Bowl by a year.
I will start playing Madden again if they bring back the ambulance.
Funny you mention that, someone I work with brought up the ambulance to me the other day lol
Can you do this for the Joe Montana football games? They changed quite a bit from game to game.

one of my goals is to get my hands on the sega cd version of NHL 94, I heard is pretty damn good.
Have you thought if using an emulator and ROM? Have you also thought of using a bypass on your Sega CD and burning a CD using an ISO file?
I just like to have something to put on my shelf
but first I need an actual sega cd which is actually pretty pricey now
Okay, I understand what you mean. The AVGN has the same desire to own the real hardware and software and he doesn't like to use emulators.
