    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on the Mega SG.
    2. While Madden 94 was the first game in the series to have the NFL license, it did not have the licensed players. That wouldn't happen until the following year with Madden 95.
    3. Madden 97 and 98 are incredibly similar. They share loads of graphical assets and the same music. Only the front end and a few Super Bowl options separate the two.
    4. Surprisingly, Madden on the Genesis never exceeded 16 megs. I often wonder what it could have looked like had it gone to 32.
    5. While the Madden series showed up on the SNES as well, I never felt it played as nice as the Genesis versions. The crowd and voices sounded better on the SNES, but I preferred the music in the Genesis games as well.
    6. There are videos of the canceled 32-bit Madden 96 on the internet. It's easy to see why it was axed.
    7. Of all the Madden's here, I still prefer the original.
    8. While Madden NFL 94 still plays great, I actually disliked the new graphics and animation. It looked silly to me.
    9. There were 2 Madden's on the Saturn. 97 and 98. Both were awesome.
    10. One thing I always appreciated about the Madden games was the ability to simulate a game. Every single year I simulate the playoffs and Super Bowl to see who wins. That's be especially poignant this year.

The first two Madden games on the Genesis are all I need. Love the music in the first game and would really enjoy hearing a well done arrangement of those tunes with real 'lectric geetars. That ambulance in the 2nd game was just hilarious, causing more more damage than the injured player had sustained... well not really but I just loved the absurdity of it all. I think the first few games have my favorite field graphics as well. Some of the later games had more detailed grass but the perspective seemed off. I would play so much of this and Lakers vs Celtics when they both came out. EA seemed like a brand new titan on the console and they really elevated the Genesis.

Very much so, you'd grab the latest EA game pretty much knowing you were gonna get something different. Something you'd not experienced on a console before. As they were more the type of titles you'd get on a PC or Amiga.
      It didn't always work.
Dark Castle and Budokan being a couple of games I ended up trading quite quickly.

@@polycube868 Nice. I think it's at the sweet spot of having football depth and realism but also the colorful, chunky, chaotic fun playability of early Madden games. College Football USA 96 and 97 are better "simulations" of football, but a bit of the fun factor is lost, and so if you are not that into football to begin with, Madden 94 is probably perfect.

This game actually made American Football popular here in the UK again. I'm pretty sure of that. I remember the first game coming out. I got it on release here and it was from this game me and my friends worked out the rules of the game.
It was a huge hit here in the UK. Because it was a good game. Wasn't about the sport, or the licences or anything else other than the fact it played wonderfully.

I don't remember any other penalties being in the game besides Defensive Offside.

The first few Maddens were huge in the UK too. Everyone knew about them and you saw copies everywhere. The magazines hyped them up as being some of the best games on the Mega Drive (check out Mean Machines, Issues 3 and 15). It's impressive how much of an impact Madden made to a nation that didn't even know the rules of the sport. A lot of us learned the rules just because of that game (I've heard RMC mention this too).

One day while over at his house and hanging with him and my nephews, we fired up Madden. He said" you gotta see this! " he described an ambulance that comes out on the field. So we played it a bit, I of course sucked at aports games. Lol wasn't long before a player got hurt then we heard the wrrrrrrrrrrr! During my childhood and angst teenage years, my dad, grandfather and me would all watch football and when Madden was doing commentary - especially around thanksgiving - we all really not just enjoyed it but respected his input. He was part of the family tradition.
Switching gears here, any interest in covering the EA NHL series? I played the ever loving hell out of those. No other hockey game compared. It brought and taught hockey to so many that would’ve never had much exposure to the sport. I know because in SE Texas, hockey pretty much doesn’t exist - but it damn sure did for me and my friends on the Genesis. It was also the only game I had lots of time with the four player tap.

NFL Football '94 is what I played from 94 until 2000 which was when I got a PlayStation and completely stopped playing Football games until last year. I still play 94 every once in a while, it's so much fun... I do play Madden 21 now more regularly on the PS4, really enjoy that one.

It was pretty groundbreaking for the time, the instant replay and camera angles were amazing for the time. But I could only score if I played with Buffalo and ran tosses to Thurman Thomas or across to my tight end.

I haven't played a Madden NFL game since the Genesis days. I remember how awesome they were considering I'm from the UK and we aren't that much into NFL. I have never played anything since Genesis and what I've seen of the games now between PS3 and PS4, they went the FIFA way and just same old, same old. Instead of taking advantage of the current hardware and trying to make massive improvements in gameplay and other things they just profit, profit, profit.
RIP to the legend that is John Madden

As a Brit who had zero knowledge of American Football, JMF on the Mega Drive was my introduction to it. Had no clue what I was doing lol But I gradually learned the basic concepts and got pretty good at the game. Seeing as I do not like Soccer, it was nice to have a sports game I could actually get into. Loved Joe Montana Sports Talk and the NHL games as well!

We were able to preorder and purchase Madden 93 Championship Edition at our local BRE Software store. All my buddies and I picked it up and it became our go to tournament game. To this day, it is still my favorite football game. Just so fun to play. I didn’t realize it was limited and is a rare game these days. I guess I got lucky.

    R. I. P., John Madden. You’re now a legend. I have about 20 video games that are named after you. I have Madden NFL 2001 through Madden NFL 2021. I will eventually get Madden NFL 2022 and beyond. You were such a memorable person. And even though it’s sad😔to see you go, but at least you’re now reunited with your original sports commentator partner, Pat Summerall.

Aw man, I remember having John Madden '93 Championship Edition for our SNES. My Dad bought it and loved playing it, but it was too hard for me as an 8 year old kid haha, probably because I didn't understand football that well. I really got into Madden when Madden '98 or '99 hit the Sega Saturn. Used to rent it a lot. Then when I finally got my PS2, Madden NFL 2003 had me hooked, and I bought nearly every entry until Madden 25 for the PS3. I haven't played a single one since sadly. RIP to you Coach Madden. 🏈🕊️

Yeah I didn't want to be the one that said it but the series has taken a real hit as of late especially. What EA has turned the once great Madden series into is absolutely appalling. Especially now what a slap to the face and an insult to the man's name.

I have 93 on PAL Mega Drive, I remember when I got it. I got it from a old school friend who's step father owned a computer shop in town, my friend sold it to me for a reduced price brand new and it was only just released that week back in 1992. I left school in 1993. I be 45 this year... I'm a life long SEGA fan.

Something I loved, was years ago on my NES playing 2 player ice hockey against my brother on Blades of Steele, making our own tournaments.
Then playing Madden on the Mega Drive.
I know today the new consoles are amazing.
I am lucky enough to own both next gen consoles and there are some great games.
But back in the day, the games seemed made with REAL love, REAL passion and because the developers wanted to release a great FINISHED game.
These days, they seem rushed, unfinished and only made in a way that they can get more money out of the gamer once they own the game.
    Great times and great memories

My brother, being obsessed with football, is also obsessed with the Madden series. I'll be honest, given my particular interest in video games, I never really got hooked on the Madden games like my brother did. Although, I will say that the Genesis games look more fun to play than the current ones in my opinion. That being said, the legacy of John Madden cannot be denied, and I'll always have massive respect for the man.
    Rest in Peace, John Madden.

I am really excited to watch this episode, Madden Football was the #1 game in the UK Magazine "Mega" for the Mega Drive in their top 100 games. I absolutely used to wait impatiently for the next Madden every year as a teenager for the Sega Genesis (which looked and played very different on the SNES), my 2 favourites are Madden 94 for the overall presentation, graphics and playability but Madden 95 is a close second because it has the windowless passing and the 2 point converts. Madden 97 on the Sega Saturn and Madden 2000 on the Playstation are also excellent Madden games (Ironically, I think Bill Walsh 95 is the ultimate football game for the Genesis as it combines the best from Madden 94 and Madden 95). We don't say "we want to play football video game, we say let's play some Madden!"
