I loved Madden games back in the 1990s. On the weekend I would go to blockbuster and rent Madden 93,94,95 etc and play it on my SEGA.
I think I speak for everybody I really miss Big John Madden 😭

i grew up on Atari. The games today are unbelievable. I may never stop playing video games until im too old to see the screen.
I'll say this, John Madden football greatest days were when they had competition to push their product. Now the game just sucks to me. Other than graphics and sound quality there really hasn't been any real change to the actual football game. It seems that creativity went out the window with the competition.
Definitely. When it was EA vs. Sega Sports it was a great time to play sports games.
It's 2023 and it's been 7 years and it's even worse. People need to stop buying that nonsense. NFL needs to open up the competition again
It's funny that in this piece when they mention Tecmo Bowl they actually show Tecmo Super Bowl. Both are good but there are pretty large (speaking in NES terms here) differences between the two. Anyone who has played both can easily discern one from the other.

Madden Football 64 (1997) was quite good for Nintendo 64 (N64) as well.
So the first game has a play editor but the ones today don't.

The only area in which 2K was better was jersey selection. I remember playing 2k5 and it had pretty much every jersey that every team ever had.

Better animations, better AI, better presentation. 2K football was a monster, and Madden only survives today due to the exclusive license. Had 2K been able to continue Madden wouldn't even exist today. The game is better now, but it was complete shit for a long, long time.

While I've played all the but the original computer version and appreciate the franchise as a whole, this documentary conveniently leaves out the fact that they only survived through lawyers after NFL2K was submarined by licensing rights between the NFL and EASports.
The helmet cam was the best spin on virtual play and Madden had no answer for the popularity. (notice it was not shown)
Had it not been for economical politics, the Madden franchise may have died a slow death at that point. I know, because I was die-hard until I saw them bested that year.

I used Madden 95 & MADDEN Football 64, Madden NFL 94,95 ,96,97,98,99,2000,2001,2002,Etc. For SNES,
N64, NDS,GB&GBC & GBA.
This is a great video game franchise, to be sure, but I feel the "Tecmo Bowl" series was the best NFL licensed game early on. I don't think the John madden series hit its stide until it went 3D and with motion capture.

I played Gameday until PS2, that’s when I switched to Madden. Gameday was terrible on PS2. That ESPN football game was pretty good though gave Madden a run for its money.

Madden sucks ass nowadays, it's for most part one giant scam. Hell, you'll be lucky if you can play the game properly without it glitching like crazy. Franchise is horrendous.
