  • Welcome to my first video in my (hopefully) long running Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 let's play series!
    VPW2 was a Japanese only release, developed by AKI with a gameplay engine and art direction similar to WWF WrestleMania 2000. In this video I will give a detailed explanation about what VPW2 exactly is: it's developmental origins, the gameplay modes it has, and the differences from the WWF/WCW AKI games. I also play two matches: a regular wrestling match and a MMA style match, to demonstrate the exclusive MMA grappling system that was left out of WWF No Mercy! It's my favorite game of the series, and I hope you find my videos fun and enlightening!
    In my Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 Let's Play episodes I elaborate on the the infamous AKI wrestling game engine, provide historical context plus fun facts on the wrestlers in the game, and share my observations and opinions on wrestling as a lifelong fan.
    Check out my Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 Let's Play playlist: goo.gl/Wqrvbg
    I also have WCW/nWo Revenge, WWF No Mercy and WWE 2K16 Let's Play episodes on my channel!
    Want to try VPW2 for yourself? Make sure you use these essential translation guides, courtesy of gamefaqs:

    Also check out the original roster edit guide I used back in the day: goo.gl/Y3x5QF

    Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

    Gameplay was captured with an Elgato Game Capture HD and my N64. Video was made with iMovie. I used a Blue Microphones Snowball USB Mic along with Quicktime for voice recording.

      aj styles is my favorite wrestler of all time and when i saw the video where he said that i was like wow! and then i read about it on Wikipedia and i also read that samoa joe also regards vpw 2 as the best wrestling game of all time and did u know when the first tna game came out aj wanted it to be alot like vpw 2 ?

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  8 лет назад +2

      Yeah I saw when he said that...too bad they didn't listen to him! WWE has a lot of guys who plays games on their roster now; Xavier Woods has also listed WCW/nWo Revenge and WM2000 as some of his favs; hopefully with guys like AJ and Woods they can get into WWE2K's ear and convince them to go back to the AKI engine style...

      BeBetterGamer Wrestling But the question still remains.... How will will they ever get the original game engine and not have it looking like the mods that are all over youtube . To be honest i dont want the game engine looking too realistic graphics wise . But if they ever put it on ps4 and added stuff like the crowd looking like the wrestlers but smaller to portray a crowd with alot more move animations with normal sized people instead of paper cut outs with only 2 move animations and some women fat and thin , because in all the aki games there are no females in the crowd . Also there could be actual commentators with a choice of turning on and off their voices but still have them make normal movements which all wrestling games should've had a long time ago . What about having voices for the wrestlers and have them move there mouths and btw i saw some taunts where the wrestlers actually smile and move their mouths in revenge and no mercy . Actuall crowd chants insted of those slightly repetitive noises they make . A actual career mode like 2k16 but with more storylines . But those are a few little things that could be worked on and added.

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  8 лет назад +2

      I personally would like to see it moved towards a cel shaded/animated style; where it appears realistic but it's not photo realistic like 2K16. The N64 graphics worked b/c they were the best of that era, but nowadays if you aren't trying to be photo realistic might as well be a little more artistic. I think things like crowd animations/voices etc would be cool little touches but not essentially necessary...all I want is for my wrestling to feel fluid and clean; the engines that have been created after AKI all feel clunky and counter intuitive. If they could just get back to that and the pacing of the AKI engine, then I'd be happy. For me the fire pro wrestling series nearly perfected what should be in a wrestling game when it came to features and customization options; and I think they had a lot more room to add all those things because they took liberties with the art style (that still holds up ten years later), which I think a No Mercy remake should do. What's the point of having the most realistic wrestlers in a game if it plays like trash?

    This game never gets old, I'm 47 years old and still feel like I'm 30 when this was released, and to be honest, I started playing this 2 years ago. I had a friend who imported games but only watched him play them. But now via emulation I even play the NJPW on 64 and PS1 emulator, where NJPW 3 was the best on PS1. I use the ePSXe android emulator for NJPW 3.

      Very cool. As more time passes, emulation is becoming the best way to preserve the history of these games and still make them accessible to new players today.

    Your comment about tape trading took me back. I borrowed a tape from a friend in 1992. He was gushing how awesome Japanese wrestling was. When I took it home and popped it in the VHS, I was immediately in awe. The tape had a bunch of the early 90s New Japan stars. Jushin liger, Otani and the highlight for me was 2 matches with the OG Tiger Mask vs Dynamite Kid. After watching that tape, I never looked at wrestling the same again.

    This is awesome! Great video on VPW2. Iv been a fan of Revenge and No Mercy for a while and wanted to learn more and try out the Holy Grail of Wrestling games. I got my emulator, rom, English patches, and my usb to PS2/N64 adapter all ready. I still have to change the costumes and adjust all the characters but then I'll start diving deep with this game. I didn't know there were super finishers in this game so thats awesome to find out. I can't wait to check out your other videos in VPW2 series. :)

    I found it a bit odd that Vader had the Jackhammer as his second front finisher xP
    On a somewhat related note, Vader's hidden moveset in No Mercy (hidden DEEP within the game) gave him the Body Press to Front Slam as his front strong A-up move, which also belonged to Goldberg. ^^

    i hope you're able to see this comment but my gosh what a video my man great way to introduce one of my favorite games as a kid i had no one to play with on this game i was a lone wolf until 2012 (WWE'12) , as a kid i was confused because characters just pop up randomly having me question were they're here before? *not knowing i unlocked them and certain items for Edit Superstar* Misawa was my enemy on this game because he was the only A.I to somehow beat me it was fun clashing against him and even involving other people the A.I pulls up a challenge the same way with him on Giant Gram 2000 btw in that game it showed me the classic matches of when Misawa first won his belt and it was like a 2k Showcase/Showdown: Legends of Wrestling style mode before any other wrestling game like WWE'13 SVR challenge mode ever done it but after you won those matches they'll show you Highlights of the actual match but overall this game has the best in game options cutominzation, gameplay and Match-Types even to this day that we don't get anymore in wresting video games the only publisher now for the current constoles is 2k and they are squeezing the wrestling out of the games with buggy and glitchy gameplay Random Game crashes with Easy/Repetitive A.I who cheats you in gameplay a one dimensional career mode with no Love put into it that THQ did better . Now I've heard next year 2k is doing micro-transactions for next years launch 2k19 even tho this year on career mode is teaching you how to gamble and having you miss over 110+ moves without unlocking them while in exhibition mode everything is unlocked 2ks business practice is not what a wrestling game should be it shouldn't be a slot machine of pay to win and that's whats wrong with the current wrestling games now. No Mercy to me has a lot more gameplay sides/elements to it that makes it sort of a even better game to the wacky/crazy side of carrying big cheeses , the rocks Book, Perry Saturns Mop ,Crash Hollys Scale , Mae Young putting her crotch on your face etc etc is what makes the game have so many options you can easily go about it without too much hard-work same thing with MDickie wrestling games that's why i think a lot of people pick that to be the #1 game for wrestling games for me i choose Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 around this time as a kid i want the match types the customization and the gameplay style but with All Japan Pro-Wrestling for the Playstation 1 realistic graphics at the time also good game in that game it has a more skilled grappling system if the 1st Virtual Pro Wrestling was better than the second then my apologies i never got my hands on the 1st i do wish i can go back to this game fully knowing who everyone is and how to unlock them but since the 2D Phenomenon Fire Pro is coming to Playstation/Xbox in the summer with all the current and past NJPW stars i fully know they'll likely use the same methods as in this game with the un-licensed superstars speaking of that the first time i saw Great Baba was in Touken Club but he was a parody wrestler in that game most of the wrestlers are that i think that's why on the current games on universe mode i use actual wrestlers and parody them all because of that game btw Touken i think was the 1st game to use parody wrestlers all an all great video once again i hope you do know some of the game i mentioned they are amazing as weel as this beautiful Creation that is Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 -mb

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  6 лет назад +1

      I'm familiar with all the games you mentioned, although I haven't played Giant Gram. I remember wanting it back int he day and yeah they basically did Showcase mode before 2K, which is cool. I would love to get it on the channel. I've heard about the microtransactions too...such a shame. I feel like 2K needs a lot of work gameplay wise; like you explained there are a lot of things VPW2 and FirePro do 2K doesn't, and they should focus on that instead of microtransactions. I think now is the perfect time for wrestling game alternatives, just how people want alternatives to WWE.

    • @MarcusBakerX97
      @MarcusBakerX97 6 лет назад

      You're right about what wrestling game needs but in the back of my mind i truly believe 2k knows that they can do better ,that they are fully aware of their options,i am gonna continue commenting because it's always great to express how you feel about the video and to that i fully enjoy it even going back to what i saw months to re-watch it and lay down a comment i hope you're able to grab Giant Gram the quality sound of the intro and the animations of the game is gonna really get you into gear to keep on playing Stan Hansen was kinda OP in that game as well as i can remember every grappling maneuver feels like you just annihilated your opponent some voice overs from i think the actual wrestlers *i think* it's 100 times better than Royal Rumble 2000 and the robes man Ric Flair not even AJ Styles Fortune btw good team the robes are amazing im not gonna explain more i hope amazon or a local store might have it . In Jersey it some game stops have it -mb

    Where can I find the best way to edit the names? Like there are different way to deal with the limited space. You shortened the pre-name, others put it as the short name. Is there a complete list somewhere?

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  7 лет назад

      There's a full list of all the wrestlers names on gamefaqs...but in terms of how to put them into the game it's entirely up to you. Since there is only limited space for the English characters, everyone comes up with their own way; there is no perfect system because there is always gonna be one or two wrestlers whose name are too long no matter how you try and spell it (like Mr. Gannosuke, Mitsuharu Misawa, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, etc.)
      I went with the first letter and last name, some people put just have the last name or first name, or nickname...whatever you like! Honestly its whatever you feel most comfortable with. I kinda want to figure out how to spell everyone's name in Japanese, and then have only their short name be in English...

    Can you explain the offensive parameters of CAWs? For example I figure arm and leg offense paremeters were for punches for kicks, but would head offense be headbutts only? Or is it all head hurting moves like pile drivers or ddt's? What about body offense? Is body offense for slams and suplexes?

    Can you explain how to use the memory card for this game?

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  7 лет назад

      The memory card basically gives you extra slots for CAW's and belts, so you can swap them with the ones that are in your game. You only get 16 spaces for wrestlers per memory card though...so if you are planning on making more than 32 wrestlers, you'll need to invest in multiple memory cards or one of those four in memory paks they used to sell (could probably still find them on eBay). As for how to navigate the menu and options, refer to the Translation guide by IceMaster on Gamefaqs.

    So what kind of Game Shark do I need so I can play the cartridge on my 64?

    • @SJB2000
      @SJB2000 5 лет назад +1

      U dont need a gameshark. The Japanese cartridges weren't designed to fit into American n64 consoles so u have to modify either your console or the cartridge. The easiest way to do it is to switch the back of the cartridge with an American game cartridge. U can find a screwdriver on Amazon or ebay pretty cheap. Another way is to cut off the ridges on the cartridge to make it fit into the console. Or u can open your console and remove the part that stops the cartridge from fitting all the way in or u can buy an adapter on ebay which is really expensive imo. But what i did was use one of my old game cartridges and bought the game and a n64 cartridge screwdriver and switched the backs on them so vpw2 would fit. Its the cheapest and easiest way

    23:20 I feel like pointing out that DLC is only a thing due to how much people want graphically from a game now. Like, people want to pay the same price for the games they did 20 years ago even though development and asset creation is through the roof in terms of cost. If people would be willing to pay 100-150$ or so for a game they wouldn't bother with DLC at all.

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  7 лет назад

      Yeah the cost of game development is definitely a big reason why we have DLC now and I agree I don't think people realize it's kinda bonkers that games have stayed around $50-$60 for so long...I remember paying sometimes $80 for SNES or N64 games back in the day! Imagine what that means now due to inflation! I wasn't trying to make the fact you got to pay for added moves in the WWE games a negative though, I was trying to make the connection how they added on moves done by other wrestlers who aren't necessarily currently wrestling for WWE and how VPW2 kept moves from the WWF/WCW games even though there is only a couple of non Japanese wrestlers in the game. I honestly think DLC nowadays is much better than it has been in the past, and like you said I understand that a lot of that needs to be done this way so that we can keep getting these awesome games. Thanks for the comment!

      Reversing strikes or grapples? For strikes and when they grab it's all about the timing but every strike kinda has it's own timing. When you are locked in a hold it's a bit of RNG just button mash a bit and hope you get the reversal.

      +Paul Paul Did you make it so that you can only win via first blood? Make sure ring out, submission, pinfall, tko and time limit are all off as win conditions. If I remember correctly from back in the day sometimes you have to make him bleed twice in a first blood match if it doesn't end automatically.

    @BeBetterGamer Wrestling Hey!!! It's me again :) I have a question (maybe some questions I wanted to ask you actually.) I'm sure you heard of WWF No Mercy mods like "Showdown 64" & I think "Monday Night Wars." Are these mods actually possible to insert into EverDrive 64 Cartridges? Or do they run the high chance of crashing your EverDrive & screwing them up? When I ask that too, I also want to know if they also screw up your other games you have on there, thus becoming corrupted?

    • @inner-harbormaryland-feets4119
      @inner-harbormaryland-feets4119 6 лет назад +1

      I'm currently having issues with getting "Showdown 64" onto my laptop itself. The actual emulator that game supports, "Project 64 V2.1" gives my laptop viruses. I can't even get V2.1 through the official Project64 website, as it doesn't even give you the option anymore, to download that version.
      One video I tried watching on RUclips, the guy was rude & made everything seem so "self explanatory" when it really wasn't. Some sites don't have No Mercy ROM (CoolRoms for e.g. doesn't do Nintendo ROM's anymore) yet the guy was like "just Google it!!!"
      That doesn't help, ugh! And the way he organized his folders, confused me like crazy as well :(

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  6 лет назад

      That sucks you had such a bad experience with that guy who managed to get it running, but I can totally relate. It always bothers me when someone says "it's super easy to figure it out" but they don't explain how they did it and aren't helpful lol that really bugs me! Anyway, unfortunately, the Everdrive does not run any of those mods you mentioned. I'm in a similar situation as you; currently, I can't try any of the mods because I'm on a Mac and none of the emulators required for those mods run on a Mac. The only thing the Everdrive can run is hacks or patches that don't add anything to the existing code. All the No Mercy, VPW2, and other AKI mods have extra assets like images, music, moves etc. and needs all those loaded in with the help of an emulator that can add those files. That's the easiest way I can explain it, as had been sort of relayed to me from the maker of the VPW2 translation patch. Currently, there are some efforts being made to make some ROM hacks in the AKI games that can run on the Everdrive, but I don't know how successful they'll be or when they will be ready. I hope this helps, and feel free to ask me any more questions you have!

      @inner-harbormaryland-feets4119 6 лет назад +1

      BeBetterGamer Wrestling Thanks for letting me know about this! I'm hoping at the very least, I can get a "Showdown 64" or a WCW-themed mod onto my laptop!! That really sucks that you cannot play any of those mods - see at least for me, I have a Windows & it's possible for me to play those games!!!
      I'M GLAD YOU SYMPATHIZE WITH ME & UNDERSTAND WHAT I SAID! Not every single person out there has the best antivirus programs/can afford the best antivirus programs or are even THAT tech-savy to download complicated games, programs, everything else related. And also just because some people can easily get something to work, doesn't mean others aren't allowed to be confused!! Hello! Great videos, I really like your passion about wrestling and the games. Keep going!
    Dou you suggest getting both VPW 1 and 2 even if I already got No Mercy, Revenge and World Tour and Fire Pro Wrestling Returns for Ps2?
    Will the translation guides be enough to master the menus? Do one miss a lot in the story mode or mic work before the matches because of language?
    Can't remember if WM 2000 had much text. Had that back in the days having no alternative since AKI dropped the Wcw license, but I think today No Mercys Better. I was never much into WWF/WWE though. One question regarding gameplay: the weapons still disappear when dropped like in WM 2000, right?

    • @BeBetterGamerWrestling
      @BeBetterGamerWrestling  8 лет назад

      Thanks for the compliment! I highly suggest adding VPW2 to the collection; although I might be bias because it's my favorite of the AKI series. I don't think VPW64 is necessary unless you want to collect them all; it's essentially World Tour with more wrestlers and modes, but it's that early AKI engine so it's not as polished as the series got from Revenge forward.
      I think the translation guide will be more than enough. The menus are essentially laid out the same way as WrestleMania 2000, so once you see the similarities you probably will end up memorizing it over time naturally.
      You don't miss much of the story due to the japanese text b/c there isn't any; RRS mode is essentially Road to WrestleMania, so you are going through various matches with no plot. RRS mode is a reflection of an AJPW tour schedule, so all the text and dialogue that comes us are notifications for tournaments, title matches, and character unlocks.
      And yes the weapons disappear like in WM2000.

Actually Fire Pro has a nice feature where if you copy a wrestler to edit the moves, you can hide the original default wrestler, so that only your cloned wrestler appears! I kinda wish VPW2 had that feature because there's no good way to hide a wrestler if you copy them over a CAW space.

      I recently bought VPW64 from eBay, and the copy I received already had all the attires edited and names corrected; so I got lucky! Which is also why I haven't looked for a written guide. The memory card can save 16 CAWs; it's set up basically how it's set up in the game. You can move or copy the CAWs back and forth between the memory card and game. What I like to do is keep at least one slot open in game (so fifteen caws total) to make it easier to move/copy back and forth between a full memory card and cartridge. You can also do the same thing with the belts you make: move them back and forth between memory cards.
