Virtual Pro Wrestling 2: Ōdō Keishō (バーチャル・プロレス2 〜王道継承〜) is a professional wrestling video game released in 2000 for the Nintendo 64 game console. The game was only released in Japan and is the sequel to 1997's Virtual Pro Wrestling 64. The subtitle, Ōdō Keishō, translates to English as Royal Road Succession, which is also the name of the game's single player mode.

He was gonna be in the All Japan roster section under his "Gladiator" name but he left for ECW after doing an All Japan tour. Thats why his model is barely change in the name besides the texts on his trunks.

Here’s some other stuff about the game you might’ve missed. The Great Muta has his own reversal slot labeled heel (if you try to power bomb him, he can reverse it by hitting you with the mist when he’s on your shoulders). There’s promos you can do before and after the match by holding any of the yellow buttons (after the entrances and after the match).

It’s similar to the ps1 Smackdown games where you didn’t unlock certain wrestlers, you unlocked pieces of them and had to put them together yourself!

The level of detail put into this game is kind of crazy. I had a few moments were I pulled off a unique counter with some old indie wrestler that only they had in their moveset, like Hakushi's backflip kick.
If the weapons would have stayed onscreen after dropping them in this one, then we could have had an awesome Death Match mode. I'd like to imagine a full on Death Match mode would have happened if we ever got a VPW 3
i always wondered why the hell we never got another All Japan game, aside from the PWN/AJPW/NJPW Political stuff that, for as much as i love some of the matches and wrestlers in that era, i know very little of anything of substance about
@@bulletchains8205 There were two AJPW games on Dreamcast called Giant Gram available. Also Natsume Championsip on SNES was an AJPW game to start with.

I just discovered this game a few days ago through my handheld emulator and it's far and away the greatest wrestling game I've ever played. I REALLY like No Mercy and WM2000 but this feels timeless in a way those two don't, probably because of its roster and the era it represents.

I love clones. I hope the No Mercy director working on the AEW game with Yuke's suggest putting some puro clones. Something about playing as those stars felt better knowing AKI put some tlc into replicating their movesets. Even if they don't Yuke's was always good at providing preset movesets and entrances back in the day. I'd really love to see a AKI/Yuke's man-type character.
I actually created a Yukes Man in WWE 2k17 or 18 (forget which, but both had a ton of premade Yuke's logos). His entrance attire was a Ribera Steakhouse jacket and I think I even made him his own "Future Media Creators" championship. I think I might have been stoned.

Bro I spent like 75.00 on eBay like a decade ago importing the game and the adapter to work on the US N64... It is the best wrestling game of all time. The japanese announcer makes each match seem so legit.
I honestly prefer Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 to the sequel. Alone the fact that it's a extended WCW vs. nWo World Tour (such a epic game, to the best wrestling Era for me of all time) is for me a plus.
World Tour has the better soundtrack, way better and cooler comic graphic (the graphic of the AKI ones since WCW/nWo Revenge look crappy). I always preferred the more simplicity of World Tour.
Also is my love to WCW/nWo and WWF/E Wrestling(games) so big that I not really need this game here.
It is interesting, but for me it's definitely more nice to know, than anything else.

I'm not scrolling through 74 comments but just in case no one has mentioned it before there is a rom hack of this game called freem edition. It has an English patch for the game and many other wrestlers that were not in the game such as Goldberg Mr perfect Kane undertaker etc. The ROM hack works on real N64 hardware. There's a video on RUclips about it by "better gamer"
I’ve seen this, but I wasn’t aware it could be used on the hardware. Would it be through an Everdrive?
@@NikateeN Yes. "Bebettergamer" uses an ever drive and records all of his gameplay on actual hardware.
Scumbags online have sold the ROM on actual cartridge form. But I don't recommend doing that because the creator of the ROM hack discourages that.

Bro I talked you a while back about this and I bought got it Friday and I’ve been playing this non stop!! It’s a great game! Wish I had this as a kid. And I even willing to say that it’s a step ahead of no mercy. Those mma setting is badass! Mind blown on this thanks again

As someone who has been watching your videos since your early days on RUclips many years ago, I can tell how much your reviews have improved! Great camera quality in 60 fps with superb mic capture (audio), the right ammount of hummor and being very informative. Your editing skills have improved a lot as well, always with great gameplay footage. They were already good back then, thats why I imediatly became a follower, but they are just getting better and better.

About the game: I have exactly the same opinion! Due to nostalgia and being more of a WCW fan, WCW vs NWO Revenge is still my favorite! But to people claming this to be the best Wrestling game ever, I cannot go against it. It is bloated with content, huge roster and great gameplay!

Just rediscovered this game tonight. Really really great game. Had 1st time playing royal succession road. Tons of fun. Real challenging AI for sure. I used to play this on expert level but now on hard as I find it faster gameplay. Thanks for the great review.

Well you can always enjoy the N64 now. I grew up in that era, but was too busy with my PS1 but now I'm going back and enjoying some great N64 games that I missed back then. I just added this wrestling game, no mercy, sin and punishment, and mischief Makers to my N64 collection

Loved the intro. This really is the greatest wrestling game of all time. It really improved over what the American games were. The roster is incredibly mindblowing. This game actually held a Guinness World Record for the biggest wrestling game roster. You can really tell there was a massive amount of attention to detail and love put into the game. I miss AKI and Yukes. They really should come back and make wrestling games again. Without them, wrestling games could have been very different. Fun fact: This is AJ Styles favourite wrestling game of all time.
Personally I say Fire Pro returns on PS2 (and its 325 wrestlers) is the greatest wrestling game ever, but this is a very very close second! 👍👍👍

I don't know what it is but vpw2 just feels better then no mercy and revenge the gameplay being a little more technical with a bit more depth just makes such a big difference

i’m gonna be honest…
i got this game mostly for Hayabusa.
for those who don’t know:
Eiji Ezaki was a Japanese wrestler who was known for his balance of Mat and Aerial attacks, mythical entrance theme, and unique appearance.
He was part of Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, or FMW for short, created by Atsushi Onita(another unlockable in the game). When Onita left, Hayabusa became the face of the company, and as a new generation approached, so did a new crowd thanks to Hayabusa.
Sadly in 2001, during a match against Mamoth, Hayabusa lost his footing during a springboard moonsault and suffered a career ending injury, bring along the end of FMW
and to make matters worse, after he finally started to show great signs of recovering, and regaining full use of his legs, in 2016, Eiji Ezaki passed away.
And even to this day, Hayabusa’s legacy is felt all around ranging from
Seth Rollins using the Phoenix Splash and Falcon Arrow (moves Hayabusa invented)
to Mysterious Q’s mask taking inspiration of Hayabusa’s mask
even NJPW star Will Osprey was given the blessing to wear Hayabusa’s gear at a PPV.
So to say Hayabusa was a legend is a major understatement, and is why I love this game more than WCW/nWo Revenge.

I love this game, when i found out about it, I ordered it on ebay from japan and since it didn't fit in my american n64 I heat up a knife on the stove and surgically removed the edges off the carthridge to make it fit. 😂😂😂😂 it is awesome I translated all the names of the wrestlers. and i figured out the translation of everything menus, etc and I love using the MMA rules matches those are great, and the many MMA fighters on it. my favorite fighter in DR. Wagner JR.

Wow, the legendary wrestling game I’ve never played!!
Maybe I'm alone here, but does anyone else think the simpler graphics of this era made wrestling games better? Strangely, it made moves feel like they had more weight - and the simplicity of the blocky character models made character creation a LOT easier. It's not nostalgia talking, I really think it had some benefits newer games lack. I almost wish they'd try to reinvent this style for, say, the upcoming AEW game.
Me personally, I'm just done with wrestling games which try to be "realistic". I want more games like No Mercy and WCW vs the World. Wrestling games should be fun first and foremost, not a sports sim.

Been on a wrestling video game RUclips binge, and that is my EXACT thoughts. How did the feel and look of the games get progressively WORSE the newer they got?! Wcw vs nwo World tour, Wrestlemania 2000, no mercy, and wcw revenge are superior in so many ways. (I'm ashamed with myself that I never knew these Japanese games existed prior to today.) Even the SNES/Sega wwf games were more fun to me than some some the newer system ones! Glad I got to be a kid through these titles!

I'm going to side with these are the best wrestling games ever made I wish they could be done again adding in tiny bits like casket match or cage matches casket matches bra in the crowd announce table being destroyed and through the barricade not like the ones of today where every time you go through a barricade commentators tell you I can't believe you went through the barricade an added more weapons extreme championship match and locker room where you create the wrestler

In my book these were one of the best wrestling games ever so much dedication in time I remember those days playing before sunrise barely getting sleep off to work thinking about them games I was introduced Nintendo 64 by my cousins did I was able to put one on a layaway when they first came out Nintendo 64 and play those games I even had people who didn't like wrestling playing them that was the biggest accomplishment a Nintendo 64
These cannot top WWF No Mercy in my opinion due to it having cage and ladder matches. That ladder match is the icing on the cake. I still want to buy these two games though despite how expensive they are because I own the other four with the same engine. You know exactly which games I’m referring to. Thank you for introducing me to these two Japanese versions of those games.

So when your wrestler came to the ring, holding down one of the C buttons allowed you to do verbal (written) taunts before the match (that you could customise for each wrestler)

Played for the first time today. I liked it way better then no mercy.
The different refs arent just for look only. Some of them counter slower than others
I played this game once on my phone ages ago but for some reason couldn't get into it as much as VP64 (maybe cause of the lack of English in the game? Idk). But after seeing this review it makes me wanna boot it up again on my Everdrive 64 and play it on my N64 on that, with that you need no converter heh. This seems like a fantastic and fun game and that roster is very impressive to me just looking at the names.
