I like the videos from different parts of the world the Guyana videos are fire just places i will probably never fish but dream of.. but all your videos are top tier even ones like this from the states keep them coming!!
I've had that happen. Got a huge hit and went back for him. I was fishing some bluffs, using shad. Something BIG hit and pulled straight down. Snapped my 20lb like it was 4. I went home and got my big boy rig and went back. Almost the exact same spot, he hit again. Same thing, straight down. Snapped my 40lb, and splintered my rod. I left him alone after that. But I've never forgotten the spot.
That must've been a massive fish, to break your line, AND splinter your Rod like that! I made a big mistake, back a little over 6 years ago. I was fishing in early November, 2018, with an Ultralight Fishing setup. The Rod was a Shakespeare Axiom that I'd had since 2002. I wasn't expecting a huge fish to grab my bait, and break me off like that, but I was fishing alongside a Dock that people fished from, on a 17 Acre Lake. Suddenly, I'm guessing that it was a huge Largemouth Bass, grabbed my bait, and took off! I set the hook, but made the mistake of grabbing my Rod near the center of it, and he snapped that little Rod, like it was a matchstick! Man, that made me madder than a whole nest of wet Bald-faced Hornets!!! Luckily, I had my Medium Shakespeare Uglystik Rod and Reel setup with me, so I went to my SUV, got it out, came back, and fished some more, and caught a nice batch of Bluegill and fairly good-sized Largemouth Bass. Nothing great big, but 1-1 1/2 pounders, or so. It was still a great day!
My PB bigmouth kitty is 42# and 42"... I had bought a used 21' pontoon boat and took a month or two to outfit it for the river. When it was finally ready me and a friend took her out and had shit luck all night. So we decided to hit one more area choked with woodpiles and then head back to the dock. We pulled up on the spot, threw out massive 10" live bullheads! I was watching my rod tip and knew I had something but figured it was a snapping turtle by the way it was moving. With my terminal tackle about halfway back to the boat we hear this TAILSLAP that sounded a lot like someone just threw a VW bus into the river and my buddy and I both looked at each other like OH DAMN! When I got her in she was emaciated and really beat up... it was literally JUST post-spawn and she needed to eat and take a nap. She was so tired she was like reeling in a tree branch, and she was missing more than a little weight, but there she was, all 42"x42# of her! On my first night out as a boat-owning river rat cat fisherman. So now my only way to beat my PB for fatties is to find a 50# fish somewhere. What a problem to have, eh? lol 😉 Interesting factoid: around 44 lbs is where flathead catfish start gaining weight faster than they gain length. In other words up to about 44#, the weight will lag the length a bit... 24" = 6#, up to 43"=41#... but 44"=44#, and then a 45" fish will weight 47 lbs! Finally the weight > length! Granted that's from the length/weight charts, which are obviously not always correct for a given length, but "in general" on average that's how it works! Cool, no?
For flatheads either under a float or on the bottom with an egg sinker just let a live bait like a bluegill or carp or bullhead sit within 2 feet of the bottom. Use 80-100lb braid with a 50-80lb mono leader tired to an appropriately sized hook for the bait (for bluegill and bullhead specifically; carp require very specialized rigging). Use a 1-6 oz weight depending on depth and current. Use a rod like that one you have or one a bit heavier and hold on tight! Also always use a swivel because catfish roll a lot. This swivel also stops the egg weight from hitting your knot. I also recommend putting a red or bright colored bead between the swivel and sinker to add color for attraction and to prevent knot damage. Many people also use a bobber between the hook and sinker to suspend the bait instead of just using a float. Just make sure the bobber doesn’t lift the weight off the the bottom and only suspends the bait. Just cast this in deep holes, by drop offs, and around trees and weeds in deeper water.
@TyPigPatrol I appreciate how you show just fishing content, not filler. The various ways and locations that you find and catch hogs is mind blowing. Keep up the great work. I've been with you for a very long time and I'm not going anywhere.
The biggest flathead I’ve ever caught was 15-1/2lbs caught on a big bluegill the liveliest bait you can use is best and the biggest I’ve caught them on gills the size of my hand and I’ve got big hands

Grand Lake. Oklahoma. About 1½ miles west of Sailboat Bridge, there are some limestone bluffs on the south bank.
