XF10(28mm), the little brother of the X100V(focal length: 35mm) is a pretty compact camera, just the same size as the Ricoh GRIII. The tilting screen is a bonus over the GRIII design. Both cameras are still compact. Wondering how Fuji could combine the design of the XF10 and X70 together in one camera: joystick, pop-up evf (like the RX1R, RX100, GX5 II, or an external EVF as option), 2 FLs like the GR (28mm, 40mm), tilting screen, PASM (XF10) dial over the the SS dials, but keep the Exposure dial/Customized Dial (unless a double SS/ISO dials like the X100V), mic + headphones jacks if possible, IBIS like the Ricoh?, aperture/focus ring(s) or just a control rings... Dreaming ? If they can come back with a "X80/XF20", and keep it that compact and the price lower than the GR3... wondering how it will work for Fuji. What do you think?
I recently purchased the X70. It truly is an amazing tool for street photography. I came from an x-pro1 so the switch was fairly easy as the menu functions just about the same. The autofocus is plenty fast and I actually enjoy using the touch screen to focus and capture a shot. So far the experience has been it is a very unassuming camera even more so than the x-pro1 plus lens. This helps my comfort level as much as the subjects I am trying to photograph. The Classic Chrome film simulation is a treat. I find I am using it almost as often as B&W. I went back and forth trying to decide between this camera and the Ricoh GR II. Both are more than adequate for street style shooting. It was the fact that the jpegs are so good on the Fuji that ultimately swayed me. I don't mind working with raw and do feel the end result can be worth it but in most cases the jpegs are all I need with this camera. Thanks for the time you take to review and share your experience and knowledge.
+Jay King congrats on the X70. Yes everything you've observed I agree. The GR is also amazing but it's a different little monster. Touch focus and shoot is a cool tool, as is the articulating screen. Have fun and happy shooting!
+bigheadtaco After spending a few more days I was able to figure out the how to set up a Ricoh snap focusing equivalent. In manual mode it can show you a measured focal distance line (you can choose between feet or meters). As you change the aperture and move the focus ring it indicates where focus starts and the distance it covers. The cool thing is if you need to use autofocus quickly in manual mode you can press the AE/AL button on the back and it will automatically focus per your previous auto focus settings. That button is also helpful in changing your manual focus distance quickly if the situation calls for it.
Jay King yes, many photographers use this set up even with their DSLRs, separating focus from the shutter button to the back focus button. Although this system is cool, there is another cool feature of the snap focus that no other camera can do. Even in AF mode, half press will AF and then full press is the shutter. However, if you press straight down with the GR, no matter what mode you're in (AF or manual) it will bypass it and go straight to your designated snap focus distance. This is very cool in an emergency and you need to take a quick shot. But the method you described is how I always set up all my Fuji's since it has such a nice horizontal focus and DOF scale in both AF and MF modes. Thanks for your comment!
Excellent preview. I rented the GR for a few weeks and fell in love with it. Fantastic camera. Now this ... The tilting touch screen and top controls look interesting, but I'll still probably buy a GR. The X70 is going to make my decision more difficult, though. Thank you!
I'm definitely getting this camera. It looks the perfect beginner camera for me and ticks a lot of boxes. I cant decide between silver and black however. I love the look of the silver out of the box new, but the black might wear out nicer and has a stealthier look...
Thanks bigheadtaco for this preview. Looking forward to the production follow up video. I am a new GR II owner (less than a month) extremely pleased with the shooting experience (generous front grip and rear right area and the logic of the controls, it resonated with me almost instantaneously) The IQ is great, looking forward to see how badly it get trounced by the X70 IQ wise. For me IQ is not the end all, it is about having fun and efficiently getting the shot that I see, so far the GR II is doing it for me. That said I will definitely check out the X70 when it hits the shelves (minor case of gear nerdness).
+Rick N yes thanks for your comment. The Nikon D5 will outshoot the X-Pro 2 but there's more reason why you pick one camera over another other than IQ. The X70 will have better AF and high ISO IQ, but remember the base ISO on that sensor is 200, where the GR is 100. This means that all things being equal, the GR will have better low ISO performance, which is a good thing. I've done family portrait sessions with the GR with my full flash gear and the pictures were amazing! Also the black and white jpegs and the converted RAW files into monochrome on the GR are very film-like. The Fujifilm has always had average black and white images out of camera. All said and done, I've been shooting the GR since 1998, and as amazing as the X70 is, I'm keeping my GR. I don't chase after specs. Thanks again for your comment. The GR 2 is amazing. I shot with it in Hong Kong and my best images came from the GR for my style of shooting.
Happy New Year, BigHeadTaco! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as the Fuji X70, Sony a6000 kit, Panasonic LX100II, or possibly the Oly OMD-EM1 II, or Sony RX100V. However, based on other test reviews of the X70 (or even the fixed 28mm lens of the X-T100x series), more than one have said that the fixed 23 or 28mm fujinon lens just is not that sharp, especially when compared to that on the Ricoh GR series. My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". (Thus, my hesitancy to go m4/3.). Plus, I'd like to keep total budget for both camera and lens to around $1000. And, FYI, I'm a stills guy, so don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? Thank you!
How about the Fujifilm X-T20 or X-E3 and the XF18mm or XF27mm? The X70 is getting older and would recommend something newer if you can afford it. If not, the X70 is decent, although this generation sensor-processor combo had some smudging issues with fine detail, especially in landscape type photographs with fine details like grass or sand.
I ordered my X70 on 1/27 from B&H and it is due to arrive this Monday 2/8. Pretty quick turn around time. I've been using my X-T10 with the 35mm F2 & many times, it's not wide enough. Looking forward to the 28mm focal length.
bigheadtaco Thank you Take. BTW. Have you ever heard of OC/OL/OY (one camera, one lens, for one year) challenge/exercise? The X-T10 w/35F2 is mentioned as being the perfect combo. theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2015/11/the-perfect-ocoloy-camera-and-lens.html
+Alex Wu February 4th was the tentative date I was given, but I was told it wasn't finalized so stay tuned to Fujifilm's website or B&H and see the actual release date (also depends on where you live)
What can I say, Take? Another great video. When I first started getting "in to" photography a year ago, your videos helped get me started. You also inspired me to try street photography and I bought my Ricoh GR II after watching you go shoot with yours. Fast forward a year, and Postal Service willing, a X-70 will be at my doorstep tomorrow. Much like you, I'm keeping my GR II, but I'm looking forward to putting the Fuji through its paces; if it can combine the things I love about Fuji imaging with the things I love about shooting street photography with my GR II, it'll be a winner. Ken
+Ken Schuller thanks for sharing. The GR and X70 are both in the same category but will appeal to different crowds and situations. When I'm with my wife or family, the articulating screen is great for group shots and selfies. When I'm by myself in hardcore shooting mode, it's the GR. Have fun!
+bigheadtaco I have a dad (me, 47) + stepdaughter (24) date coming up - she's been itching to learn photography. I'm going to start her with my GR and me on the Fuji, then we'll switch off at some point. When we wrap up, I'll walk her through some Lightroom basics. Bracing myself to help her get her first camera - I know it's just a matter of time. :)
+Ken Schuller that's great. She'll probably take to the X70 initially because it is fun and easier to shoot with. But as she becomes more advanced, she may appreciate some of the 'hidden' features like snap focus.
+Moises Leon It will be a few weeks still but on the street, X70 wins for AF speed and use of the articulating screen for stealth shooting; but GR wins for customization and ergonomic feel with more thumb real-estate. All day shooting the GR wins, but it's hard to ignore the high ISO performance of the X70...
Another hot looking Fuji! My only disappointment is the surprising lack of a proper control 'dial' on the back...toggles should of been dumped by camera manufactures a long time ago, especially in high-end cameras such as this.
+David Datura yes it felt really cheap as it does on the Ricoh GR. At least the GR has a proper spinning front dial to compensate, which is also customizable.
Great review! But I think you should have compared the X-A2 with an 18mm (27mm equivalent) lens instead of the 27mm (40mm equivalent) lens. Yes, the 18mm isn't a true "pancake," but it shoots about the same field of view as the X70. I have an X-A1, and am debating between buying an X70 ... or just getting the 18mm lens for my X-A1. There is a big price difference.
I'm almost sad that this is so good, simply because of how it would affect the GR (which is great in its own right) by taking away sales. Hopefully this'll force Ricoh to update the GR sooner with better focusing, a higher resolution sensor etc. etc. in the way that people initially thought the GR ii was supposed to be.
+Joben Penuliar I too love the GR, I'm 18 years invested into this camera system and will still continue shooting with it. In terms of sales, yes, the new X70 will eat into new sales. Imagine being shown these two cameras at a camera store counter? It would be hard sell for the GR except for the die-hard fan, or someone with very specific requirements. The GR ergonomics is vastly superior though, and it is almost 100g lighter and very pocketable. These things may be very high on people's priorities and not just specs. As I mentioned, I'm keeping my GR. It's way to sexy to give up just for specs....
Got mine thanks mate for your detailed review on this. It's really sharp wide open and the touch focus is really amazing. You can easily compose your shots especially with moving objects like kids. Size wise it's not pocketable like the gr but you can really squeeze in even with filter and the adaptor from my x100s. IQ wise it really beats the gr imho but of course some features like the snap focus are hard to beat. But I read somewhere that you can manually focus on a set distance and even you it turn on and off the x70 remember the set distance. Haven't tried this yet though. That's all for now I need to fiddle more with my x70 :)
+Raynold Tibayan congrats! My full production copy of the X70 comes in next week so I too will start my critical tests including IQ, AF speed, battery life, etc. Thanks for your comment.
Picture quality is still much better on the Ricoh especially in BW mode. Much sharper as well. The images seemed smudged at higher ISO’s on the Fuji. Honestly, the GR is still top dog.
+azizul zulzaha If you already have the X100T, the X70 would be a too much of a duplicate camera, other than not having the viewfinder. I would say that the X100T will be the next camera to get the upgrade to the X-Pro 2 sensor and processor. Wait for that camera....
Might have to sell my X100T for this. Was looking at the Ricoh GR but love the Fuji jpg quality. Really only shoot jpg since my whole photo workflow is mobile via the iPhone/iPad.
Since the lens hood fits, I'm starting to wonder if the wide/Tele conversion lenses will work at all. Would be interesting, especially the wide conversion working out to about 22mm full frame equivalent.
Hi ! I just wanted to say that I Appreciate your Reviews A Lot ! Thanks for all the great Work. Also, I think you are trying hard to conceal , to Hide, the fact that the Ricoh GR - Range are your first ladies. Your Favorite mistresses, regardless to wich other Cameras you are comparing it to. :-) lol Thanks to your (And Others) Review of the differenet Ricoh Gr-models . I settled for a used Grd-iv and very happy with the Snapshot-mode, the size and the B/W capability (Well Quality) wich remind me of the days , 30 years ago. Streetphotography with zone Focus. There are a lot of very very nice film Cameras still out there for cheap. But unfortunately in my area , no real service around to supply and end product very costly.
Thank you for your review. Very helpful but I'm still on the fence between the x100t and the x70. I love the articulating screen and would jump and purchase the x100t if it had one. As such am waiting for the Feb 15th release date of the x70 to test run one and decide.
+Myn Kamera yes I always recommend people that the best test is to actually try the camera. It' like buying a car based on other people's opinion, not an actual test drive.
Very nice,This is the video I am waiting for. Thanks Take!! what do you think about optical viewfinder from fuji?It would be interesting to pair and compare with GR!!Perhap I can use OVF from fuji on GR haha^^
Personally still like the Ricoh GR better for the deeper grip and collapsible lens, but the X70 does look interesting. No option for a VF like the GR and the price difference vs the original GR is something like $300. But the X-Pro2 will almost certainly be a superb camera, an X-Pro1 but better in almost nearly every way.
Three questions of importance to street photographers: What is the fastest minimum shutter speed allowed for auto-ISO? Is it 1/500 like the X-T10/X-T1 or 1/125 like the X100 series? Does the electronic focus distance scale have a hyperfocal indicator? Do you have to readjust focus distance every time you switch aperture in order to stay in hyperfocal? It seems the Ricoh has a real advantage here by being able to easily toggle zone/hyperfocal distances with its snap focus.
+Ryan Oliver If Fuji is reading this, your software engineers should consider adding an auto-hyperfocal option when in manual focus mode. This option would automatically set the focus distance to hyperfocal for any given aperture. This can all be done via firmware.
+Ryan Oliver the X70 has 3 auto ISO settings, all of which allows for a maximum of 1/500th sec max shutter speed. No hyperfocal indicator on the distance scale, just the focus point distance and the depth of field coverage based on the aperture you are at. It is reasonably accurate.
Hey Take, do you have problem with the ricoh gr with the lens sticking out when it powers on? it's likely to be accidentally pressed. In this case i think x70 wins. but given the gr has slightly better image quality (i think), do you think the build quality & design of x70 are far superior than gr? Keep up the great videos. Thanks
+Nickolas Lim both the GR and X70 are built well, although I will give the slight edge to the X70. However, ergonomics the GR is vastly superior. Lens quality the GR is king, as per DPReview's latest X70 full review. It confirmed my findings that the GR is almost too sharp, causing excess moiré, although you can reduce it in-camera or in post. The X70 is soft wide open.
Nice video..I think you need a thumb rest that sits on the hot shoe for the X70. I wonder what is the minimum focusing distance for macro and flash sync speed. I know it's a pre production model but can you tell the sharpness of the lens in the center and corner at 5.6? Thanks
Nice review, again! I just want to ask: what about the body? The main thing that disappoint me in Ricoh GR is the dust factor. We know about all the complains - the dust on the sensor of GR (including mine). And when we talk about pocketable the problem with the dust is inevitable. So, is the body of X 70 is dust and water protected?
+Ivan Maranov all cameras with built-in non-removable lenses will suffer with dust once it finds its way inside between the lens and sensor. There is no sensor vibration dust removal system since there's nowhere for the dust to go once it comes off the sensor, except back onto the sensor or lens. It is an inevitable consequence. The old film point and shoots you can open it from the back film chamber and clean out any dust. You can't do that with modern point and shoots unfortunately.... I've had no issues with dust myself, even though everyone talks about it. Perhaps it's the lens hood I attach that helps keep dust out. Plus I use the official case.
Totally agree, very easy to accidentally push and has happened to me more than once. Otherwise this is a great camera for street photography, it's so small people hardly notice it. Image quality is decent too.
Thanks for your review, very helpful. Does the X70 have a little level at the bottom of the screen as the GR does, to see you're holding the camera straight?
+Salimah Mahomed yes it has an electronic level. Since it's based on the same firmware as the X100 series, it will have very similar features other than the fact the X100 has a viewfinder.
Can you let me know how the autofocus on the x70 responds? My current issue with the x A2 video on AF is that even if nothing is moving/changing, the X A2 constantly goes in and out of focus for absolutely no reason.
+Michelle T. Delos Reyes that's really a personal decision based on your shooting style, skill level and priorities. Feature for feature, the X70 looks better on paper that is a certainty. However, the GR has other features that street photographers love like SNAP focus, more comfortable and spacious ergonomics, standard DNG RAW files and a slightly more compact and much lighter design.
Bought one as a xmas prez to myself and I can say one thing: It does not fit comfortably in your pant's pocket unless you wear baggy cargo pants. Jeans, no way. Dress pants, nope. It's small but not as many reviewers make it out to be. So if you want to take it everywhere with you chances are you'll need a bag, which then makes it no better than say a 100T or XT10 with the pancake lens.
Digging your channel man. New sub. :) I've been by now and then over the years but never did sub, so that's fixed now. Speaking of franken-camera-bits (I can relate) ... I know you're a big GR line shooter (myself as well) and if you happen to shoot Pentax and have an FA43mm - that lens-hood fits PERFECTLY on the end of the GR GH-3 and practically looks like it belongs there. Plus its metal and has a nice cap. I use a different hood/cap combo on my FA43 so its original simply lives on my GR nowadays. Far, far better than the plastic rectangular monster that came for the GR. :)
In the video I'm wearing a Tissot PR50 Automatic and PRS516 Automatic. In the opening image with the X70 is a vintage Omega Seamaster Deville. However, I collect lots of different types of watches.
+Jason Mantilla between the two I recommend the A2 because with the stock lens ( XC16-50) you get wide angle and image stabilization, which you don't get with the X70. The only advantage the X70 has is that it's smaller and lighter.
Fantastic & informative video! I am torn between purchasing a used X100T or the new X70. I do like to do selfie shots when traveling, so the X70's articulating screen is appealing. However, I do like the idea of the X100T's viewfinder. I've been wanting a Fuji badly for that simulated film look. A lot of my travel photos were done on an old Pentax film compact & I love the retro look of them. Any suggestions?
+Paul Anthony both great cameras. If you can not shoot without a viewfinder, obviously the X100T is your choice. If however you find you can live without it and are good at shooting via an LCD screen, then the X70 is a great option. Because I take a lot of iPhone images, plus I have the Ricoh GR, I am very use to not using a viewfinder so I would be okay with the X70. However for serious shooting, the X100T for sure
I guess what I don't understand is, if Fuji wanted a camera in between the X100T & the X30, why did they make it so small to where they couldn't fit a viewfinder on it? What were they thinking? The X30 has everything I want for the right price but really wanted a fixed prime. Thank you. : )
Paul Anthony I know exactly what you mean, but I think it's just a different category they were going after, which is the Ricoh GR market. I hope the X30 upgrade will come soon, but it will most likely have a 1" sensor like the Sony and Canon. It's not a huge market for them but it would secure a competitive product within the market, although it will overlap the X70 in terms of price-point.
+bigheadtaco I think that I may have figured out what system I'm going with. I've been struggling with it for days now but Instead of pairing the more expensive X-T1 & a X100T together, I am going with the X-T10 (silver) wth the 35mm F/2 WR silver lens (silver) & the X70 (silver). The X-T10 for portraiture & the X70 for my travel & EDC. Of course, I'll be investing the the 56mm F1.2 in the near future for that nice Bokeh. Thank you for all the videos. I'm sure that it wont stop there. I'll probably get the X-series camera. I'd just have to hide it from my wife. LOL
+valvoletta the LX100 is more like the Sony RX100 series as an all-in-one point and shoot with zoom. The X70 is more like the Ricoh GR where it has a large sensor in a compact camera but at the cost of not having an EVF. IQ will be better on the X70, but the LX100 (and RX100) will have better video, zoom lens, built in EVF and more functions aimed towards the average user. The X70, like the GR can be used as a casual point and shoot, but my guess is that many pros and enthusiasts will use it as a serious tool for image making. If you need an EVF then the Fujifilm X100T is the perfect solution.
+Alf Pedersen yes it's a pretty easy camera to learn as long as you understand basic photography. There is no typical mode dial though, that's something you will have to learn, although there is a full auto mode switch on the top dial that puts it in full automatic.
+Mykoue Yang yes it looks interesting. I'm still deciding if I should include one more manufacturer to my review list, and if so which one. I'm going back and forth between Panasonic and Olympus.
+bigheadtaco olympus I think would b the best for comparing with the fujis, they're direct competitors. I'd imagine it will help your subscriber count ;)
Great video as always Big head ?:) Quick question if I may. I'm pretty new to photography and I have just bought this camera. When I transfer a photos taken on the x70 to my iphone I notice that the file size is far, far smaller than if i was to copy from SD card to my computer. Does this make a difference in quality? If I wanted to make a print from my Iphone for example instead of using the file on my computer. I hope That makes sense ?:) Thanks so much in advance buddy.
If you transferred the images via wifi, the image is made smaller. If you want to transfer in full size, you have to go into settings, wifi and then in the options make sure it says to transfer the full image size. It is always best to work with the full file, especially if you end up cropping your images.
Thanks for the video Taco. Speaking of wifi.. With Fuji x series can u shoot remotely w/o card? I mean with sony a6000 i also can shoot remotely but here is the thing..one day i forgot to bring my sd card. So i start my remote app...shoot with it then the photo send directly to my phone without sd card in my camera. It really safe my day.
Still this camera is very tempting i was going to buy used x100t for my everyday camera because its pancake lens. a6000 is small but when u put lens on it ..it stil big. Now x70 came out... it would be very easy to slide into my office bag/pocket. Oh yea 1 more thing can it charge through usb?.. thanks for the answer Taco.
BatakGemblung yes the camera has a mini cable that attaches via USB to the adaptor that can plug into your wall socket, or via USB charge and transfer images via a computer.
+Rowena Ung all the Fuji cameras have a drive mode (at least most of them) to toggle between shooting single shot mode, continuous mode, different bracketing modes (AE, ISO, film simulation, WB, dynamic range), multiple exposure and advance settings, and on some older cameras the panorama stitch feature.
Does this mean that Fuji will not update the X30 then? I was hoping for an X40 with APS-C (maybe 1 inch) sensor.. more than the 2/3's in the X30. I love the X30, but the size does not make it a pocket EDC, and the sensor size could be bigger (maybe too big an ask as these two parameters are competing), and a touch screen for focus and shutter release.
+Jeffrey Wong it would not be surprising if they did since this segment is making a slow death, although I would be extremely disappointed. They would need to update the 2/3" sensor to at least 1" and the price will have to jump up to around the same price as the X70, which is fine. The fact it has a zoom and an EVF will put the new X30 in a different category that will attract a different type of photographer. Lets hope for a new X40!!
This might be a weird question regarding X70 is the power lever very stiff or easy to turn on/off one handed? I just returned x100s which I got from eBay cause the power lever switch was almost painfully difficult to move with my finger.
Oh you answered at 9 minutes in. Thanks. BTW, that cap on the X70 looks different than the metal cap on my X100S. The one in your pic has different ridges on the edge. Compare them if you have the cap from your X100T.
For a beginning photographer or someone who just needs a camera for casual shooting the XA2 might be better due to the zoom lens. If you are comfortable with the wide prime lens, which takes some time to learn how to use properly, I would go for the X70.
+Village Idiot Fujifilm X trans sensors are not great for video recording due to their proprietary non-Bayer sensor layout. It's not horrible and for vlogging it's fine. I wouldn't be shooting any commercial or wedding work with it.
Appreciate your response. Can you suggest a compact camera that will do both shoot great photos and video? I really enjoy the warm colours of the X100S which I use as my main camera. Thanks
Village Idiot For good video and images for compact cameras, the Sony RX100 series or Panasonic LX100/Leica D-Lux are great. For ILC cameras, the Panasonic G7 is great as it has both mic and headphone inputs.
+ThatPyotr the GR is still an amazing camera with an amazing lens. The X70 will outperform it in almost every way except the lens quality. Stay tuned for more detailed reviews in the next few weeks. Follow me on Twitter for up to date information.
+Thomas Yi not all X series cameras are made in Japan, typically only the top-of-the line products. My sample was made in China, meaning it was assembled in China. You have to remember like most modern electronic devices, parts come from all over the world, and then the final assembly is completed. The sensor is probably made by Toshiba or Sony (Fujifilm sold their sensor division last year), the processor is probably in house, the lens is made in Japan, etc. It would be nice if everything was made in Japan but it is typically reserved for the highest margin cameras. Again, I can not confirm where the production model will be built, but my pre-production sample was made in China.
Thanks for the review! Can you use the touch screen to focus while on manual focus mode? With the XT-1 or X100T, I like to use manual focus while using the AF-L lock button. Curious if the touch focus can serve as the AF-L (without the focus lock on shutter half-press).
+Clyde Siazon in manual mode, the onscreen shot/focus/off menu is still there. However, only the shot mode works, which means it focuses and shoots for you. However, like all the other X series camera, in manual focus mode, you can press the rear AE-L/AF-L button to autofocus for you. This is the preferred mode for street for me so there's no lag when taking a picture after determining the distance you wish to shoot at.
+bigheadtaco Thanks for the reply. Yes that's right, I use the AF-L while on manual like you mentioned. But it would be great to touch focus in lieu of the AF-L. Touch focus only for the camera to refocus on half shutter doesn't make sense. IMO
Clyde Siazon my camera does not have the final firmware so who knows. Even the info I gave you might not make the production model, so stay tuned until I get one at the end of the month.
What do you guys think of the digital converter, that surprised me but I need to really test it's worth it. This thing would be useful, might swap my x30 for it.
do you mean the ability to digitally zoom? It's actually not bad, as long as you're okay with shooting JPEGs only. The digital crop will still be of higher resolution and lower noise than the X30 due to the much larger sensor, but it is always best to optically zoom. However, the option is there if you need it.
Naturally, but it does seem like an interesting option. For me the sensor and vlog options would make it more useful to me. Yes the digital zoom, fuji claimed to me it's not a simple optical v digital zoom deal but a step up.
Damian Brown yes, the software actually upscales the cropped zoom image and maintains the 16mp resolution. I tested it and it's pretty good, although you are limited by shooting RAW only. If you are primarily a JPEG shooter, then it's no big deal.
Hi I have very important question to ask you: since focal length of x70 lens at eq.28, 35, 50mm is electronic and not native/real as eq.35 in x100 (and eq.28, 50 wcl/tcl), are the quality of result photos (jpeg and raw both) same for printing and exhibition presentation? at least i would like to be sure, eq.28 in x70 quality is the same as eq.35 in x100t, then i will be able to crop what i want in photoshop! pls advise.
The X70's 28mm equivalent focal length is the native angle of view and is at full resolution. The digital crop to get 35mm and 50mm equiv can only be used in JPEG mode since it uses an upscaling technology so you do not lose any megapixels. However, this is not the same as optically zooming and the quality will suffer. The X100 has optical convertors to get a wide and tele equivalent of 28mm and 50mm. The X70 currently only has a wide adapter that gives you a 21mm equivalent, which is very good. I hope they will make a tele converter as well. In terms of image quality of the X70 versus the X100T, they both use the exact same sensor (the X100S as well, but the original X100 uses a different sensor and processor), the only difference will be the lens. The lens is half the image quality so a good lens is important. Comparing the 2 lenses, I would say that the X100 has a better corrected and sharper lens versus the X70's. The X70 is also 1 stop slower at f/2.8 versus the X100's F/2, which doesn't necessarily affect image quality, but it is a factor in lens design. With printing and post processing workflow, it really depends on how big you are printing, how your original images are exposed, if you're tripod shooting or hand holding your shots, how you post process. Both cameras produce 16mp images and can be printed to large sizes as long as you process your images that are optimized to the print size.
+bigheadtaco many thank for your technical answer. definitely they will make zoom teleconvertor for x70 soon. but you belive the lens of x100 is sharper and better quality than x70 and this is very important! because we can use optical wide teleconvertor and we can wait for zoom teleconvertor but is not possible to change the lens on x70 for better one! do you think this lens as native 28eq. is enough sharp to take photo and magnimize and crop it in photoshop with high quality without losing mpx for printing?
I kind a doubt the X70 will be a big seller - already a crowded market in a limited special market - with the Nikon - Ricoh and the Sony RX1 /m2 and Fuji X100s/t - for me the price is high - few hundred more one can get the XT1 - and for less one gets XT10 - but I was shocked to hear it has Touch LCD - amazing - I though the Purists hated Touch LCD and Fuji would never implement - personally I love Touch LCD and Touch Shutter - I really was expecting to see an upgrade to the X30 - which to me was a flop - when Sony RX100m3/4 own the market and now Canon G7X and G5X are out and Panasonic also with the Lumix Fz100 - so I was hoping to see a X70 as a X20 upgrade - not larger then the X20 - but with 1 inch sensor and 4k video etc - I just do not see many families that want a none zooming lens camera - the Lumix LX100 is about the same size and cheaper and has 24-75mm F1.7-2.8 lens and has 4k video - I really think the X70 will follow the X30 - slow sales :) Panasonic has the GM5 which is about the size of GM1 but has EVF
+quitto91 the camera limits the video length to 14min at 1080p at 60fps. I guess it has to do with the buffer size and the processing power limits of the camera. You can go double that if you drop the fps to 30fps or drop down to 720p.
quitto91 I'm use to lack of stabilization because I come from the era of having none, plus my Ricoh GR doesn't have it. If it had it, it would be nice, but remember the stabilization only steadies you, not your subject.
I recently had some issues with my GR and it was covered under warranty. It has been at the place Ricoh sent me for over a month waiting parts. I cant really get through to them but they keep telling me 7-10 days. Ricoh wont reply to my emails, so sadly I may be selling it fora camera with better support. How is fuji's support?
+Erik Fries I'm sorry to hear about Ricoh's lack of communication during the service repair process. I have dealt with Ricoh Imaging Canada with no issues in the past. As for Fujifilm, Canada has great service but I can't speak for other countries or regions.
+bigheadtaco maybe I should of sent it up north haha. unfortunately a Google search reveals I'm not alone here in the states dealing with this repair issue. it's a shame. I love my GR. if it was dust sealed it would be perfect
Do you mean am I concerned that the Fujifilm X70 doesn't have stabilization for video? Not really because it's not that great for video anyway. I would go Panasonic M43 or Sony for really solid video performance. As for stills, IS is definitely great, but there isn't much competition in this category (compact APS-C fixed lens and focal length point and shoot). I definitely wouldn't complain if it had it, but for now you just have to watch your shutter speeds and your own hands to stabilize your images.
Im kind of like a noob with camera and such. I read the specs for X100t and X70, there's not much of a difference really, why is X70 so much cheaper? Should I get X70 or X100T still worth better? Thanks! :D
+Cuti X100 has an EVF and a faster lens, f/2 versus f/2.8, hence the price difference. X70 also has direct competitors, whereas the X100 is unique in its category. Which one is best would depend on your needs/shooting style.
+Cuti you're paying for the hybrid viewfinder, a premium technology that no other manufacturer has. Leica would be very very interested to have something like this in their M series cameras, but they don't. Only two series has this technology, the X100 and the X-Pro series. I personally love shooting with it when I'm shooting a particular style, while I'm happy using the rear LCD for other styles. It really depends on how you want to shoot and how much you want to spend on a camera. The image will be pretty much the same, minus the lens design and technology. From my tests, the X70 lens is sharper wide open versus the X100T stopped down to the same aperture. But lens sharpness is pretty much the same once you're stopped down to f/4 so there's no point in arguing the merits of lens sharpness.
+Franky Junior you have to find your own style. Look at the photographers you like and find out what focal length they use. I prefer 28mm, which is wide but it's more photojournalistic. 35mm and 50mm is probably the most popular focal lengths, but even guys like Saul Leiter used 75 and 90mm lenses. Amazing street images. Find your own style and then work on developing it. It's a great journey to take...
+Khatrine Kho If you want a zoom lens at the expense of less pixels and resolution, the X30. If you want a higher resolution and megapixel camera at the expense of an EVF and zoom lens, the X70. It comes down to what you want or need, but my guess is there will probably be an update to the X30 or discontinuation soon since the camera is getting a bit old.
+Tomislav Miletić because the pre-production spec sheet I received from Fujifilm does not mention the actual maximum time limit for every combination, I don't know for sure. I will have to check the manual once I receive the production copy. Ask me again next week either via Twitter or IG or ask again here. Thanks.
XF10(28mm), the little brother of the X100V(focal length: 35mm) is a pretty compact camera, just the same size as the Ricoh GRIII.
The tilting screen is a bonus over the GRIII design. Both cameras are still compact.
Wondering how Fuji could combine the design of the XF10 and X70 together in one camera:
joystick, pop-up evf (like the RX1R, RX100, GX5 II, or an external EVF as option), 2 FLs like the GR (28mm, 40mm), tilting screen, PASM (XF10) dial over the the SS dials, but keep the Exposure dial/Customized Dial (unless a double SS/ISO dials like the X100V), mic + headphones jacks if possible, IBIS like the Ricoh?, aperture/focus ring(s) or just a control rings...
Dreaming ?
If they can come back with a "X80/XF20", and keep it that compact and the price lower than the GR3... wondering how it will work for Fuji.
What do you think?
Yep 💯 ❤
Thank you!
Thank you for your very enthusiastically first impression on this new and exciting camera!
I just bought an X70. Thank you, bht!
I'm definitely getting this camera. It looks the perfect beginner camera for me and ticks a lot of boxes. I cant decide between silver and black however. I love the look of the silver out of the box new, but the black might wear out nicer and has a stealthier look...
Ivo Sotirov Did you end up getting it? How was it for you? What color did you get?
I believe it is a great morning to watch this, thanks man!
+Paul Anthony you'll love it. Touch focus is pretty cool too. Congrats on your purchase.
bigheadtaco Thank you Take. BTW. Have you ever heard of OC/OL/OY (one camera, one lens, for one year) challenge/exercise? The X-T10 w/35F2 is mentioned as being the perfect combo. theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2015/11/the-perfect-ocoloy-camera-and-lens.html
Paul Anthony I like the X-T10 and XF35 combo. Light, compact, relatively inexpensive.
+Paul Vasquez cool thanks for the link.
Can't wait to play around with it when it hits stores!
+Alex Wu February 4th was the tentative date I was given, but I was told it wasn't finalized so stay tuned to Fujifilm's website or B&H and see the actual release date (also depends on where you live)
+bigheadtaco
Also a fellow from the lower mainland ^^
Though I live in White Rock!
***** coolio. Talk to Leo's and see when the arrival date will be. I'm sure it's in a few weeks.
Thanks for doing a deep walkthrough for this camera.
Never mind. You just said it has the film simulation. Thank you.
Love your videos. You're just so watchable. I have the Fuji X-T1 so I was very keen to see your thoughts on the X70 and the X-Pro 2.
No. I got the Panasonic LX100. No viewfinder killed it.
Nice upgrade for my Fujifilm X10, and waiting your next video Fujifilm X70 vs Ricoh GR II
Enjoying the upgrade in the quality of the video! keep it up
Another hot looking Fuji!
I will wait for the Olympus pen to come up S/H later in the summer . This camera will be the best "bang for buck" this year
+carforumwanker yes I'm very happy that Olympus revived the PEN with a flagship model. I'm partial to the retro rangefinder look of a camera.
It looks like the X70 is a "headless" version of the X100T. Lol
+GaryDX25 ha ha, so true. It's a really cute size, I like it.
thanks for your review, always enjoy your take on gear
Great review! But I think you should have compared the X-A2 with an 18mm (27mm equivalent) lens instead of the 27mm (40mm equivalent) lens. Yes, the 18mm isn't a true "pancake," but it shoots about the same field of view as the X70.
I have an X-A1, and am debating between buying an X70 ... or just getting the 18mm lens for my X-A1. There is a big price difference.
"the x70 wide open @f2.8 is about the same in sharpness as the x100t @f4" sounds great
I'm almost sad that this is so good, simply because of how it would affect the GR (which is great in its own right) by taking away sales.
Honestly, the GR is still top dog.
that hood from X100t that fits on it, same sensor, same processor makes me wanna but ONE!!!!!
+azizul zulzaha If you already have the X100T, the X70 would be a too much of a duplicate camera, other than not having the viewfinder. I would say that the X100T will be the next camera to get the upgrade to the X-Pro 2 sensor and processor. Wait for that camera....
i don't have a X100T, but i already have a 35mm 1.4 art. x70's 28mm is great choice for me!
Would be interesting, especially the wide conversion working out to about 22mm full frame equivalent.
you cant get leica-like images in ricoh coz of color. you need 'scenes' or post process. stay with x100T just because of the lens.
Reading through the Fuji material, they are releasing a 21mm equivalent wide adapter specifically for the X70. Nice combo.
:-) lol
Thanks to your (And Others) Review of the differenet Ricoh Gr-models .
Best review of yours I have ever seen. Very good!
+J.P. Stone thanks, I appreciate that.
Thanks for the review, and you're here in Canada too! Just subscribed! :)
Very informative video, even I don´t shoot much digital.
Three questions of importance to street photographers:
What is the fastest minimum shutter speed allowed for auto-ISO?
I still love my x100s really want an XT-2 or maybe Xpro2
I love your photography show :) keep up the good work!
Pre ordered mine too. but if its not made in Japan I am returning it and just get a used x100t instead.
Do you have an early impression of the image quality in the extreme corners of the frame ?
Thanks for the video.
Thanks
Seems like a major oversight by whoever designed X70. You should never have to fight with your camera to do what you want to do.
Great first look. Thanks!
I was under the impression, maybe mistakenly, that the Fuji X70 could be switched to 35 and 50mm via a digital tele-converter on the camera ?
+Walter Stein I think you'll find it is a 'digital crop' of the 28mm image which is then interpolated.
now i wanna see image comparison with ax3 since it has 24mp now and the tilty flippy screen has improved ...
Video record button on top plate near shutter is in a very terrible spot I think.
yup, agreed!
Totally agree, very easy to accidentally push and has happened to me more than once. Otherwise this is a great camera for street photography, it's so small people hardly notice it. Image quality is decent too.
So is the Fuji X70 better? It sure looks so from the JPEGS to the size to the tilting lcd. The monochrome on the Fuji looks amazing to :)
Wait for full review. But GR guys love their GRs still. Better ergonomics.
+bigheadtaco many thanks
Can you let me know how the autofocus on the x70 responds? My current issue with the x A2 video on AF is that even if nothing is moving/changing, the X A2 constantly goes in and out of focus for absolutely no reason.
Should I get X70 instead of the Ricoh GR? I will travel next month and will do street photography.
I guess the x80 will come out soon then.
Bought one as a xmas prez to myself and I can say one thing: It does not fit comfortably in your pant's pocket unless you wear baggy cargo pants. Jeans, no way. Dress pants, nope. It's small but not as many reviewers make it out to be. So if you want to take it everywhere with you chances are you'll need a bag, which then makes it no better than say a 100T or XT10 with the pancake lens.
no it's a bit big, not pants pocketable, but jacket pocketable. The Ricoh GR is truly pocketable.
what were first and last productiondates and serialnumbers? Last ones supposedly had X100f sensors.
your filter in the back, welcome for every one
Very nice vid! What kind of watches do you wear?
In the video I'm wearing a Tissot PR50 Automatic and PRS516 Automatic. In the opening image with the X70 is a vintage Omega Seamaster Deville. However, I collect lots of different types of watches.
Missing Acros which is a shame as its not firmware upgradeable.
hello.. may i know what camera did you use for this video? :) it seems it has good quality in low light :) love your reviews by the way
Sony A7s mrk I
i see.. thank you :) by the way what would prefer/recommend for video/vlogging, xa2 or x70?
+Jason Mantilla between the two I recommend the A2 because with the stock lens ( XC16-50) you get wide angle and image stabilization, which you don't get with the X70. The only advantage the X70 has is that it's smaller and lighter.
thank you so much.. i had a hard time deciding which of these two will i buy. thanks again.. :)
LOL
Great review, how would you compare it to the Lumix LX100? Pros and cons?
So then question, new X70 or used X100T?
Say for vacations?
Would the X-70 be a good first time buyers camera if your willing to learn all the bells and whistles it has???
+Alf Pedersen yes it's a pretty easy camera to learn as long as you understand basic photography. There is no typical mode dial though, that's something you will have to learn, although there is a full auto mode switch on the top dial that puts it in full automatic.
I like you, you seem like a decent bloke. Good review
What's a bloke?
Please get a hold of the new Olympus Pen-F and give us a review!
Kirk Bushell thanks for recommendation. I will choice either the Panasonic or Olympus soon enough. Both make great cameras.
I hope That makes sense ?:)
Thanks so much in advance buddy.
If you transferred the images via wifi, the image is made smaller. If you want to transfer in full size, you have to go into settings, wifi and then in the options make sure it says to transfer the full image size. It is always best to work with the full file, especially if you end up cropping your images.
Wonderful ?:) thanks for replying so quick mate I appreciate it ?:) and thanks for the info.
Stay safe bud.
+BatakGemblung that's a pretty cool feature on the Sony. No the Fujifilm camera will not allow you to shoot without a card unfortunately.
Thanks for your review, I would like to ask What's that DRIVE button for?
I just returned x100s which I got from eBay cause the power lever switch was almost painfully difficult to move with my finger.
it's a bit stiffer on the X70, but also the protruding tab is sharp and does hurt a bit if turning on and off continuously.
Haha you look in love with the X70. Lol. Is that the same hood as the one on X100 or smaller thread?
Oh you answered at 9 minutes in. Thanks. BTW, that cap on the X70 looks different than the metal cap on my X100S. The one in your pic has different ridges on the edge. Compare them if you have the cap from your X100T.
First, I'm not a expert photographer. I want to buy a fuji camera for daily shoot and selfie... between XA2 & X70, which one is better?
For a beginning photographer or someone who just needs a camera for casual shooting the XA2 might be better due to the zoom lens. If you are comfortable with the wide prime lens, which takes some time to learn how to use properly, I would go for the X70.
Enjoyed your video, subscribed! I do motorcycle vlogging, how would you say this camera rates for filming?
Thanks again!
Was thinking of the ricoh gr as my companion camera but I think i might have changed my mind
+ThatPyotr the GR is still an amazing camera with an amazing lens. The X70 will outperform it in almost every way except the lens quality. Stay tuned for more detailed reviews in the next few weeks. Follow me on Twitter for up to date information.
Alright just pre-ordered. One more question, is this made in Japan like the other X series Fuji?
+bigheadtaco great to know! Thank you for the info. I saw that article on the Verge about Fuji's camera manufacturing in Japan and got excited.
he wears 2 watches.
He always does
Thanks for the review!
As of this year I am. As much as I loved raw!
I kind a doubt the X70 will be a big seller - already a crowded market in a limited special market - with the Nikon - Ricoh and the Sony RX1 /m2 and Fuji X100s/t - for me the price is high - few hundred more one can get the XT1 - and for less one gets XT10 - but I was shocked to hear it has Touch LCD - amazing - I though the Purists hated Touch LCD and Fuji would never implement - personally I love Touch LCD and Touch Shutter -
I really was expecting to see an upgrade to the X30 - which to me was a flop - when Sony RX100m3/4 own the market and now Canon G7X and G5X are out and Panasonic also with the Lumix Fz100 - so I was hoping to see a X70 as a X20 upgrade - not larger then the X20 - but with 1 inch sensor and 4k video etc - I just do not see many families that want a none zooming lens camera - the Lumix LX100 is about the same size and cheaper and has 24-75mm F1.7-2.8 lens and has 4k video -
I really think the X70 will follow the X30 - slow sales :) Panasonic has the GM5 which is about the size of GM1 but has EVF
regarding video capabiilty, what do you mean when you said the x70 stops at 14mins for 1080p? do you mean the battery runs out by then? thanks :)
+quitto91 the camera limits the video length to 14min at 1080p at 60fps. I guess it has to do with the buffer size and the processing power limits of the camera. You can go double that if you drop the fps to 30fps or drop down to 720p.
Thanks a lot! Did you find the lack of image stabilisation a problem in photos and videos?
quitto91 I'm use to lack of stabilization because I come from the era of having none, plus my Ricoh GR doesn't have it. If it had it, it would be nice, but remember the stabilization only steadies you, not your subject.
Like what you are doing !
I'm a bit confused because I'm a newbie. Doeas the X70 have zoom?
£549 in UK... Very tempted
Don't you miss not having stabilisation for video? That is my only real concern...
Does this mean a touch screen is coming to XT2?
You need a script to bring down the length of this clip
+sfbdotcom thanks for tip!
Had the x100t :) the best
+Ryan Oliver +bigheadtaco thanks!
Is there a way to disable the screen while the camera is still on?
+casschin No
for street photography do you recommend 35mm lens (50mm eq) or more wider ?
+Franky Junior you have to find your own style. Look at the photographers you like and find out what focal length they use. I prefer 28mm, which is wide but it's more photojournalistic. 35mm and 50mm is probably the most popular focal lengths, but even guys like Saul Leiter used 75 and 90mm lenses. Amazing street images. Find your own style and then work on developing it. It's a great journey to take...
It's worth buy?
Does it take the same battery as the x100?
I have an X100 and I hate having so many different batteries and chargers.
+vincedelapena Same battery as the X100 and X30, yes, it's great being able to swap. Another great reason to stay within an eco-system of a camera
if it was f2 i would buy it directly =/
nice! u get it from fuji after its release?
+twaii1208 is there any effect/theme for video like "Portrait" that makes the skin look pretty?
+twaii1208 As a reviewer I receive samples to try before the cameras are released. I have a good working relationship with Fujifilm Canada.
+bigheadtaco they do have a portrait mode that does soften the skin tones
+bigheadtaco great thanks
having trouble to decide which should i buy, x70 or x30 ?
+Khatrine Kho If you want a zoom lens at the expense of less pixels and resolution, the X30. If you want a higher resolution and megapixel camera at the expense of an EVF and zoom lens, the X70. It comes down to what you want or need, but my guess is there will probably be an update to the X30 or discontinuation soon since the camera is getting a bit old.
hell yeah shout out to casey neistat
What will happen if you drop frame rate in video on 30 or event 25 fps? If possible?
Will than the camera shoot full 27 min. ?
+Tomislav Miletić because the pre-production spec sheet I received from Fujifilm does not mention the actual maximum time limit for every combination, I don't know for sure. I will have to check the manual once I receive the production copy. Ask me again next week either via Twitter or IG or ask again here. Thanks.
