WEST HIGHLAND WAY | Part 1 Milngavie to Tyndrum | Solo camping

- I decided on a whim to hike the west highland way, caught a train to Scotland two days later and arrived in Milngavie.
Follow my experiences, the good the bad and the hilarious as I try out wild camping for the first time and try and overcome my fears of cows and the dark!
Take a look at some of the stunning scenery as I walk from Milngavie to Drymen, then head to Loch Lomond and stay near Balmaha, before setting off again to wild camp near Inverarnan and Inversnaid and finally up near Tyndrum

Ahhh thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it 😃 I’m heading back up tomorrow to do the rob Roy way! Love Scotland so much x
Loved this 👍👍, did it 2005, memories , binge watched a load of your vids on my day off, hooked 😄😄
Awww Richard!! You should do it again 😍 I want to!
@@DrunkOnWanderlust I know it's always in the back of my mind,i need a kick up the butt to make it happen ,😂😂, keep sharing your adventures🤟🤟
I'm considering doing the West Highland Way in a few months. I think this video has just made my mind up that I'm going to!
Especially if Guinness and curry is available en route!
Look forward to watching part 2.
OMG you have to do it! 😃 you will have the best time! It was such an epic trail, I’ve gone on to complete so many more long distance trails now after this one but it is still one of my favourites by far!
The weather was so much better on part 2 and some truly breathtaking scenery so check it out! I’m heading back upto Scotland in April to do the Rob Roy way which I’m very excited about 😁
@@DrunkOnWanderlust I've now watched part 2. Just need to get some time off work now and I'll be up there! In the meantime, I might do one or two shorter trails nearer to where I live 🙂
Brilliant!! The most unpretentious hiker on here. Love that you make ciggie stops 👍, big hills are bastards 😀. Subbed.
Hi Stephen 😁 thanks for the comment, ah ciggie stops are key 👌🏻 and Guinness stops lol had a lot of fun, part 2 is better x currently doing the weavers way ... it’s been pure comedy so far ... keep an eye out for this vid when I upload next week
@@DrunkOnWanderlust Absolutely, you're a tonic mate 👍
After watching your more recent videos, because I missed your adventures I went back and watched some of your earlier videos. I was struck by how much you've grown as a person and learned as a backpacker. Travel and spending time in solitude in the outdoors is, I believe, the best classroom that exists and one that's completely overlooked. I hope that's not lost on you.
Yes of course, I just fell in love with the outdoors and hiking after this trail, it really was a turning point in my life 🥰
Your amazing, always surprised when you say your stopping for a cig!
Walked the WHW last year. Camped all the way and absolutely loved it. Looking forward to seeing part two. P.S we slightly underestimated the inversnaid section along Loch Lomond, it can be a killer 😂
Lee 1690 😂👌🏻 it certainly was! I’m a beginner and defo not the most fit lol lots of scrambling over rocks and stuff on that section! I can’t wait to get back up there on the 16th to finish it though x
You've done the hardest part. Enjoy the rest of it as the scenery really opens up. Good luck x
Lee 1690 thanks, I’m really looking fwd to it x
Well an umbrella ☂️ that's a first for me on a RUclips hiking video 🤣🤣🤣
Didnt last long 🤣🤣🤣
Zpacks do a good sturdy one apparently.
Your general attitude to the challenge is awesome. You just keep going. Love it
Thanks Alex, 🤗 I had a great time!! My first long distance hiking trail … I literally got back from Scotland again today, I just finished the rob Roy way … another excellent and stunning trail, I’ve now completed 11 in total since august 2020 when I did the west highland way …. They are addictive!!! Videos will be coming soon, have you done this one yourself?
@@DrunkOnWanderlust oh wow… you’re getting the miles in!! I completed the WHW a couple of weeks ago with a few mates. Loved it but wish I’d done baggage transfer! 😂
@@alexbrown3828 noooo carrying the pack is half the fun! Did you wild camp? 😃😃
@@DrunkOnWanderlust we wanted to but we only had 5 days so opted for the more luxurious option 🤣
Your sense of Adventure and method impresses me 👍🇬🇧
🤗🤗🤗 I’m so glad your enjoying the videos x
Well done on getting as far as you did before the storm. Lomond is definitely the hardest bit of the trail, the rest is a breeze you'll skoosh it. We Scottish term there. You should spend Some time in Glencoe, do a couple of Munro's. Awesome!!
Good luck.
David Henderson awww thanks! I’m back up on Wednesday to finish it off 😃 I can’t wait!
Hi, just watched your video. Ye couldn't have picked a worse week with storm Francis coming in. You done the right thing to abandon due to weather, the trail will be there for another day. To be honest your little tent woukd probably get destroyed by the weather if you wild camped on Rannoch Moor. Look forward to part 2, you'll fall in love with Glen Coe 👌. Take care.
Martin.
Hiking & Biking Scotland hi Martin I’m heading back up today to finish it off 😂glad you enjoyed the first vid .... I’ll be filming this second half too xx

Aww and thank you so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it 🤗
Really enjoyed this video. Quite refreshing to see and hear about all the things that went wrong or things you didn't prepare for. Can't wait to watch part 2 tonight
Tbh ... nothing was prepared for properly as I only decided to do it two days before 😂 I’d never done a hike like that before so it was all new, but I had a fab time! Part 2 is funnier I think, and the weather was better
Amazing, Guinness, curry, wild camping, gorgeous scenery, I pictured heaven to be like that, go girl

You Crazy Lady! Pop up tent in Scotland???!!!!! Well done.
Lesley Strahan 😂 you gotta try these things! It wasn’t too bad!
I did WHW in 2029 too. Like your video, its like being there again. Ill be doing East highland way next year in september. Cant wait 👍
Hi Tony 😃 great to hear from you, yes it’s such a memorable trail x so so beautiful 🤩 The east highland way was stunning too! I actually preferred it as it was so much quieter, but both have their pros and cons and both are wonderful to experience x good luck on the EHW! You will have a great time
You must have been the most glamorous hiker on the Way :-) really nice video, your enthusiasm is infectious and I bet you're great fun to go hiking with. Subbed.
Hi there Carol 🤗 thank you so much for the lovely comment x I had such an amazing time on this trail, it got me hooked on hiking and camping x The scenery was so beautiful, have you done it yourself? Thanks for watching
@@DrunkOnWanderlust Planning to do it next April, hopefully. I'll probably pay to stay in cabins rather than camping due to my dodgy hip.

Just got off the train from Tyndrum. Got halfway and had to stop due to massive blisters making walking horrible. You are true inspiration. I spent a fortune on kit and planned. You put me to shame. Kudos
Oh no! What a shame …. But you can go back and finish it another time don’t worry! I’ve had to do that a few times 🤗 I’ve literally just got off the train back from Pitlochry… I completed the rob Roy way today 🙌😃 videos coming soon!!! Well done for your achievement

I remember the first time friends and I went camping, took us 4 hours to set up the tent 🤦♀️ major props to you for going solo. Amazing video!
All mine 😍😙😙😙😘
Oh, I literally can feel your craving for a guinness. We have a saying here in Germany "Thirst is worse than homesickness" ;-)
I did Ben More some years ago. That was a real beast. And in the end I was permanently thinking of THE Guinness I would drink afterwards as my reward. And guess what, that was the best Guinness ever @ Drover's Inn!!!
I planned to do the WHW this year as well, but due to Covid we from Mainland Europe had very little chances to do so this year. Hopefully next year.
The landscapes look so great.Thx for showing
Happy hiking
Ahh I really hope you get a chance to do it next year! I do know what you mean, after a long days hike I can down Guinness like water! 🤣
Great video truly inspiring , keep doing what you do x
Thanks Ron, glad you enjoyed it!

@@DrunkOnWanderlust we do like quiet, have been hiking and wild camping for last 3 1/2 months as we wander around the UK. It is amazing just being out there.
@@liveforthenow I agree! Me and my partner can’t get enough now, we have just booked our trains for the Snowdonia slate trail now in September 😃
I can’t really add anything to what everyone else has said. Your positivity and can do attitude is truly remarkable. Good on you.
I have done the WHW twice now, 2017 in 7 days and 2018 in 6 days.
It’s always lovely to see other people’s videos. Congratulations on the pronunciation of “Doune Bothy”, that was correct. The others not so much 😯
Thank you for all the love and positivity you showed to my country. It’s so appreciated, sometimes we Scots take it for granted, so it is nice to see it through someone’s else’s eyes for a change.
I will be sure to watch your second part now.
Thanks again and ATB

Just found your blog, Thouroughly enjoyed it! It's good to hear you speak "normally", it's a refreshing change. I have started with the West Highland Way clips, but will see the rest later.
I'm surprised that you are using a single skin "pop up" tent for wild camping, or any camping in Scotland, but hey ho, each to their own. I would love to wild camp beside Lock Lomond, as the views are stunning. All the best with your adventures. Chris.
Christopher Stevenson hi Chris! 😃 ahhh glad you enjoyed the video, part 2 is better though! I had a great time xxx Percy the pop up lol ... I’m just a lazy cow and it’s the quickest tent to put up and down 😂🙈 prob should invest in a new one really!

Mark Jones well I’m heading back up in Wednesday 😂 maybe i can include some in part 2 just for you!! Stay tuned
Glad you recommended people to book campsites/accomodation in advance. We're not in normal times and the majority of the campsites on the WHW are not accepting walk-ins . Really important to plan ahead in these times.
Debbie Birkin yeah for sure, I found out the hard way lol luckily I’m wild camping most of the second half when I go back so it won’t be as tricky

once past the camping management zone there is actually very few wild camp spots. Its the toughest section I think too. The bothy is a cool place to stay. Glad you planned to visit the Drovers. My favourite pub in the country. I love the ben glas farm site and the staff. Not seen them this year because of C19 :( good luck when you come to complete the route, you've actually done the hardest part.
Alan Wright thanks Alan, I completed the route on Monday it was stunning 😁 I’m going to upload part 2 today x your right, that was the toughest section!
Unbelievable! I have been yakking on for years about doing the WHW and on a whim you jumped on a train and did it - total respect to you! So sorry but I did lol when you said 'a minute after saying how dry my umbrella was keeping me, a gust of wind broke it' real sorry about that but it was just so funny 😂. Good to hear you got sorted when your second campsite was fully booked again respect to you for going up over the Ba*tard Hill, as opposed to round it and I am so with you with cows, I hate the bloody things! On a plate, surrounded by chips and mushrooms brilliant but let loose wild in a field😳. 18 miles, injuries, trapped nerve, blisters, heavy rain, broken hiking pole, I felt real sorry for you and do not know how you managed it to your wildcamping spot be honest. Real pleased that you got sun and superb views on your next day, as well as a pint and some....(not a curry fan😖). You really made the right call to go home with that forecast and I will be watching part 2 tomorrow, really enjoyed part 1 - Well Done YOU! Cheers Alan

can you guide myself and Ghost in April next year to do the walk over 6 daps?
Loved your video! Love your style 👏
Hi Jonny, 👋😃 how’s it going? Ahh so glad you enjoyed it! I had a right laugh filming and editing this! Second half is better though, the weather was spot on! I’ve also just uploaded me wild camping the Cleveland way which is comedy 😂🤦🏼♀️ are you thinking of doing the trail? Thanks so much for watching xx
Awh good on you getting up connack Hill
😃😃😃🤗 thanks! It was a struggle but I got there in the end lol x
Me n my dad are doing the Cumbria Way this summer for his retirement and he was watching your vid the other day and I noticed you'd done WHW aswell so I had to watch...Give my vid a watch if you want :)
Wow them views were fantastic,
LOL you did your makeup every morning.
Yes, I do my make up most mornings? Why do you seem surprised? 🤣🤗
Thanks for watching btw
@@DrunkOnWanderlust Just seems a bit vane considering you are outdoors but then again you are a RUclipsr so understand your need to try and look glam, wear a lot of moisturizer and UV black you don't want wrinkles at your age.
@@Oldman525 😂😂
Ok, sun cream on my face gives me spots and my make up is SPF 50 so it has dual uses
Loads of women wear make up outdoors, it’s a personal choice xx 🤗
Jealous. I should have been doing this in April. Campsites were all booked, flights, Scot rail and then Lockdown happened.
My first attempt was the year it opened when I was 14 but that got abandoned when a storm blew up. Hopefully 3rd time lucky next year. Well done. Had a chuckle at the pronunciations. A bit difficult for non Scots I expect.
Anyhoo, really like your positive view on things. That loch Lomond side stretch is the worst bit (I used to live nearby)
Ewen Cameron omg I know .... no idea how to pronounce these names 😂 sorry! Well I’m off to finish it on the 16th so if your around and wanna join a section let me know x if not just watch the second half when I upload it I’m sure it will make you laugh
@@DrunkOnWanderlust I subbed on the back of this vid so will watch the next installment. Alas, I should have been walking in Scotland this week but where I live was still in lockdown until yesterday. Won't be home until next year now. I see you like a pints. The WHW is like a pub crawl. Pub to pub. Enjoy and I'm waiting for the next installment.
I did it in 84. Well done you. Beautiful place
geoff goold would you ever try it again? I’m still deciding on where my next one will be after this?
@@DrunkOnWanderlust I have just taken up walking again after many years of abusing my old bones. But i would do it again in a heartbeat. I stopped at Doone Bothy. I took 10 days though as i was only a young pup at the time. i think the Rob Roy way is a decent one to attempt. wishing you the best. i loved your video
Awesome video take care, 👍
William Todd ahhh thanks so much! Part 2 out next week 🤗
Thank you so much for putting them on you tube for us to watch I enjoy watching them with earphone on in bed lovely seniarys and for your commentary can't wait to part 2 👍
Well done I’m looking at doing it next year
Thanks so much x check out part 2, will be awesome if you get good weather like I did the second half... the views were unreal!!!
@@DrunkOnWanderlust yeah I watched second one too great vid x
Smashing stuff, I take my hat off to you! Planned on going over from Belfast In April but C19 put an end to that... hopefully get over before Winter. atb Sinco
CAVEHILL ROCK you really should do it! I’m looking to head over to Ireland, maybe in October? I heard there’s some nice routes there too ... if you know of any let me know
Loved the video subbed
Welshman 001 ahh glad you liked it 😁 finishing the hike next week x
well done petal. 2 things..where can i get that cool hat? and Kinlochleven is pronounced Kinlochleevin x
Wendi Jardine awww thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, I had a great time 🙈🙈🤣 I don’t think I’ll ever pronounce things properly.. I even went on google ha ha
I think the hat was from amazon, I typed in peaked beanie and it came up x but a life saver for bad hair days
Bingewatching your vids, started with the first Cumbria one and working backwards.
Heading back up to finish the Cumbria way so part 2 should be out next week 🤗 eeek digging through the archives who knows what you will find lol
I know you’re attached to your cosmetics bag but those swollen eyes should be a wake up call. There’s a real risk of conjunctivitis given that when camping your hands might not be as clean as they could be.
And you’ll still be beautiful :)
Awwww 🤗🤗🤗 thanks for your concern, the make up isn’t on all the time … just very self conscious due to past experiences x and I sterilise everything and wash my hand with soap and sanitiser (ocd with make up ) so I know it’s not that, dc said it was dehydration with the swollen eyes…. Lesson learnt and will now hydrate way more when hiking even if I have to have 1000 wee stops lol 😂 hope your well and have had a great new year!
@@DrunkOnWanderlust you have nothing to be self-conscious about! I, on the other hand, have a face fit for radio :)
@@bob_the_bomb4508 🤣 beauty is in the eye of the beholder x
@@DrunkOnWanderlust you might still need a few drinks first :)
