Love that shot you brought again at the ending! Magic moment, when that autofocus hits that lovely smile! Great work Mr. Bloom. I wish you a very nice time with Sarah! :)
Really interesting to hear about the compatability as a Panasonic user who's thinking of switching to Sony. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to make this
Joseph Burn I have just bought the GH5s well aware of the many benefits of Sony’s full frame cameras. But I wouldn’t ever buy into that systems as long as I hear story’s about heating issues and senseless menus. And I really don’t like their color science.
"98% percent of you... would NOT read instruction manual, why would you!" (12:31 in) You're a hoot Philip, just smashing as you Brits like to say. Actually, I do read the manual, and print them out too, like I did with my DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It really helps. Glean all sort of useful info, which I promptly forget... so I bring the manual with me! Thanks for a stunning, engrossing video, delivered "straight up", without being hyped up and pretentious like some hosts... who appear to have drunk too many Redbulls! Subscribed! Cheers from Montréal.
DJI already updated the compatibility list on their website. Canon and Nikon cameras are also supported to pull focus (with supported lenses) by now. But Sony is still missing. Great review! Very informative and nice to watch!
Hi Phillip. Im a longtime fan of yours. I have been sending ideas to DJI about their pending two-handed grip. They are definitely going to release one. I suggested that at the center of the crossbar, DJI includes a mounting spot for the gimbal (sans the battery grip). The crossbar could be rotated to mount the gimbal as overhead or underslung, and instead of two handles, the "two handed grip" only comes with one hollow dummy handle (which looks and feels like the battery grip, sans the controls). Instead of a second handle, they have another mounting clamp for the battery grip. This way the controls are familiar & saves weight. And, if you are left handed, the battery grip clamp can be rotated 180 degrees so the cross bar can be flipped so the battery grip is on the left side. And finally, although it would again add weight, the dummy handle would have the same threaded holes on the bottom, so you could add a second tripod base. This way you could open both tripod bases and free-stand the whole thing. That said, if a goal was to save weight, they could provide a free-standing base with holes for the two grips to slot into to set the thing down.
Thank you Philip for making this review. As a Sony user myself you were very clear about the functions that don't work yet. I'll hit the gym harder for a few months and think about getting this with updates and a dual handle.
Great video review Philip. The real time shots look super smooth. Love the idea of the app for pre programable moves and time-lapse functions. It does the job perfectly well but it also has a few flaws such as camera compatibility at the moment and also the weight. I guess no bit of kit / camera is ever perfect ! Good to see old Percy getting in on the act too even though he always looks so unimpressed by all the new kit !
Phillip, been a viewer since 2016. Every video. I must say, this color grade is a very welcome addition. Not that your faded look was bad- but it is good to see you... and the footage examples. Like, SEE them closer to real 'natural'. Hopefully you continue with the natural grades. Your charisma and humour
Thanks for the review of the Ronin-s, just had mine delivered, trying it on a Canon M50 that I just bought, only just been able to calibrate keeping the viewfinder from hitting arm by a hairs width, as for your shoot location, the Malta Inn close by used to be one of my favourite pubs until they chopped down that weeping willow , I live close by in Gillingham.
To further extend the analogy you suggested in another video: DJI, Zhiyun, Sony and Panasonic should engage in an orgy and somehow produce the best hybrid camera PLUS gimbal combination. This won't happen - I mean, orgies do happen, but probably not in this beautifully productive way....
I have had great results mounting my motorized gimbal to my steadicam vest. Also eliminates the shake from walking. I just used a Manfrotto 5/8 to 1/4 speed adapter to attach the gimbal to the arm. The footage looks incredible. Especially on an OSS lens.
Don't be too bummed. It's not available outside the USA to anybody except "movers and shakers" like Philip, and a couple of days after their initially promised delivery date they can't even supply a date when their supply problems will be solved. DJI customer service and delivery promises are legendary (I think every single product/accessory they've released over the last two years has suffered from "we didn't anticipate the demand" excuses) , as is their vagueness about what functionality is supported on which devices. I'm pretty sure it's all just obfuscation to try and dissuade people buying from the readily available competition. They've been talking about Sony functionality and "We're talking to Sony. It''ll be done" since January but so far na-da. Just check DJI out on Trust Pilot to see how bad a company they are to have to deal with.
Beautiful work with the review as usual Philip! Always very informative and entertaining at the same time. Definately going to buy the Ronin S after seeing this.
You're going to love this story, PB. I got the Ronin S, charged the battery.. turned on (what I thought was the power switch)... tried to activate.. sent email to DJI support.. then I figured out I *was not turning the gimbal on*, only the battery.. the power button is quite small. My bad!
Thanks Philip you really do these reviews so well. I always watch your reviews to the end even if I'm not interested in the product. PS nice to hear your judgement on the GH5 at 21:15 as I'm trying to decide between it and the A73 - your judgement means a lot to me.
Great review and I agree with your thoughts on it. I'm holding out til they have news of a follow focus add-on for manual lense users like me. Either that or when zhiyun decides a crane 3 with an angled motor is in due
Philip Bloom Philip Bloom !Philip :-) love your 7:14 clip with sarah looking up and smiling at you with slow-mo, bokeh and music. That clip is how to remember a love one I'm just looking at online reviews. The latch for locking battery grip to gimbal. Yours looks fine, but others seem to have latches that can't flip all the way. See 6min mark of this review: ruclips.net/video/SMTrGLowVaQ/видео.html Also at 3min26 mark of this review: ruclips.net/video/HpTCy61I-WE/видео.html
I have the Crane 2 and just got the Ronin S. I'm actually having trouble with the Ronin because it seems to have a huge "deadpan" zone on the pan axis even when I set it to zero. I noticed this in the display model at B&H too. I updated my firmware, it just seems like a "thing" that's built in. The Crane 2 can have virtually zero deadpan when set in app. I can walk around a subject and keep them in perfect center with the Crane 2, but the Ronin S seems to wobble back and forth as it alternates back and forth between deciding to stay center vs panning. I used the A7III with two different full frame lenses and had the same issue. It's weird. But I can't recommend it. Has anyone tried panning left and then right on their Ronin S? Does it seem like a smooth transition to you?
thanks for that lovely review! There's a mad person out there who made a dual handle system using dji spare parts, but mounted a red monstro on it. Not sure I would want to hold that any longer then 5 minutes.
I get mine Friday here in the States. Normally 30 minute reviews would put me to sleep but Philip...Cheerio mate it must be your accent but Im always engaged. The cat was hilarious. Thank you for a very thoughtful video with some outstanding cinematography as always. Pip pip!!
Philip I really like the contents of your channel. It's great you share the views and the work of a pro. Would be super cool if you could post some tutorial on youtube on how you make movies, how you edit in post etc... Anyway thanks for your videos and keep posting ;)
Freaking awesome job! As useful as it was entertaining. One thing, though, that cat is pretty frightening. Maybe you should recruit him for next year for Halloween...
Followup question: What was the lapel mic you were using? The pickup, sensitivity, clarity and tonal range was excellent! Thank you once again for a superb video Philip.
I still haven't found a solution to my Ronin-S issue. Bought it in September last year, but pretty much can't use it in underslung mode at all. The motors are all fine upright, balance is perfect - but when it's underslung they constantly want to pull counter clockwise. So much so that sometimes the gimbal will (I guess lose orientation) and start jerking about violently. I've had the gimbal replaced by the shop I bought it from, but that hasn't solved the problem. From googling it, there seems to be a fair amount of people with the same issue but the majorit of people don't. The only thing I can think of is that it's a problem with the battery because that's been the only part that hasn't been replaced since i got it. Maybe there's a faulty connection that comes lose when I invert the gimbal.
Awesome review! I actually have a question more for the A7iii here when used on a gimbal: what AF mode and area are you using while connected to the SmallHD?

I would love to see on body battery (on human body) and quick detach cable to gimbal... that could save lot of weight in your hand and you could carry more power too
the thing is that Sony cameras operate start/stop function via a MULTI cable not a Micro USB, there are very few MULTI cables like that Fotga trigger, Zhiyun ships a Micro USB to Multi cable with the Zhiyun Crane 2 that's why it works although I'm having troubles connecting a monitor to Micro HDMI since that cable is 90degrees angled.
here is the cable from Zhiyun Crane 2, the connector seems the same but the pins are different on the inside, www.dropbox.com/s/n4217n9mgxg1rhg/20180629_095636.jpg?dl=0 when I tried connecting the Crane 2 via a Micro USB to Micro USB it was connecting via the mass storage option and I was not able to do anything with my Sony a6500.
You should review the pilotfly adventurer. Lighter 7lb payload smaller and Full Sony controll. I have my roninS on pre-order but just found the pilotfly and not sure what to do.
I have just purchased this gimbal. It is possible that my camera, a Canon 1D Mark IV, will not work with the gimbal. The Canon 1D Mark IV camera could *_never_* auto-focus in video mode, so I'm not expecting the gimbal to achieve that, but will the gimbal at least give my camera some stabilization? (I can use pre-focused manual focus when video-ing.)
Philip Bloom no worries! When you go into the app did you just use the default settings where you can change deadband, speed, sensitivity? Also did you change any motor settings at all? Just interested to see how you worked with it!
Hey mate, Great video! You will need to update the DJI Ronin S firmware in order to use the IR remote. Use the cable they provide and it will work like a charm. Cable works on all my Sony Alpha cameras. Hopefully, follow focus cable & mount is released soon :D.
Nice review, but as you pointed out it is heavy. Crane 2 managed to be 600g lighter and that's a big difference when you need to hold it for an hour or so. I hope someone will come up with a gimbal that has some kind of strap. Regarding dual grip, Zhiyun's single handle attachment makes it dual grip and others should look in that direction too. ...I am done with editing this post. I watch your review and comment at the same time, and each time I write something you mention it in after a minute or so. :) Well, it's a good review as already said.
That opening sequence was the best ever... just needed a circular frame around the cat with an MGM roar ;)
Mr Jon Kane thanks Jon!
When I first got mine I said to my friend "this feels like a weapon", I see you have the same impression!
Vandie Mure stop, get some help
Love that shot you brought again at the ending! Magic moment, when that autofocus hits that lovely smile! Great work Mr. Bloom. I wish you a very nice time with Sarah! :)
thank you!

My Ronin S is days away from shipping. I'm going to start working out more to prepare. Great review.

Great review as always. The roarrrr on the beginning! Can't wait mine.. to play around with my new Sony A7 III that is also on the way. Keep it up!
My ronin s shipped a few days ago and is set to arrive today. Excellent review, lovely cats.
This is great Philip! Mine’s shipping right now; I’ve only ever used janky shoulder mounts so I can’t wait to use it! Excellent review, per the usual.
Great honest review and I’m in love with Percy! I’m petite and with a7RIII + Zeiss 16-35 my Ronin-S is too heavy for me. Really bummed.

You always have the best reviews. Thanks for all your hard work to make our purchase decisions easier.
That's a great review, Philip. Such a great tool for smooth shots! thanks for all the info, keep it up :)
I paused the video and clicked thumbs up immediately after seeing Percy' "roar"! :D
Love your wit and humour, solid review and overall just love your work Phillip!
Beautiful work with the review as usual Philip! Always very informative and entertaining at the same time. Definately going to buy the Ronin S after seeing this.
Single grip for single guys! :D
Magnus Walander no comment!
That outro was hilarious! ;D
Fantastic review! Seems like there's some really nice features - especially those motion controlls sound fantastic!
Mack Taylor cheers Mack

LMFAO
"If your a single guy you should already have that strength already"
LOL!
Hahah that was so funny!
Skbats, screw you dude your black display pic made me think my phone screen was going to shit, had a big black blob in the bottom left corner lol
I have the Crane 2 and the dual handle bar set up as well as the shoulder harness...nice system.
Realy good review. For the weight I recommend to use a Fishing Fighting Belt Adjustable Belt Waist Sea Fishing Rod Holder.
On another note... Love the light and colors in this video. What have U used? And the settings on the camera?
Been following you for a few years. Love your stuff Phillip. I too have a Siamese who loves his camera time, lol.
I missed you
The best Ronin S review I've seen so far. And the funniest. Cheers m'dear.
That bit about reading the manual was comedy gold.

great review and lovely footage. I just got a Ronin S and am using it with my Nikon d850 & Rokinon Lenses with a focus pull. love it.
0:57 MONUMENTAL shot !! big like for Percy !!
I'm sold! Great quality here.
Bro this was some Wes Anderson brilliance! I subscribed immediately after your intro
Great review and beautifully shot as usual!
It's just fun watching your reviews, like the one for the A7S! Now it's time to preorder I guess...
Best review of this device i've seen. Great work. Also enjoyed your show at the photokina 😁👍
Great review and I agree with your thoughts on it.
I'm holding out til they have news of a follow focus add-on for manual lense users like me. Either that or when zhiyun decides a crane 3 with an angled motor is in due
Holding a pint of beer will make me tired?.... hold my beer... oh wait
Thanks for taking the time to make these reviews. Helps people like me out a lot . ✌️
puds boi you are welcome!
Hi Philip, you should have test the MOZA Air guimbal, it's the only one hand guimbal able to give the same smoothness as the freefly MOVI M10. Cheers.
and have a dual grip and remote.
Nice review! The last shot catch me feels
His locking latch closes completely. Others have complained it only closes 3/4. Beautiful test shots btw
Justin Huang which latch?
Philip Bloom Philip Bloom !Philip :-) love your 7:14 clip with sarah looking up and smiling at you with slow-mo, bokeh and music. That clip is how to remember a love one

Such a delightful gear review, very unique, loving it! I'd love to see a Philip Bloom using a GH5 though :)
Ronin S comes with a cable with a optical sensor which can be used with Sony A7 series to start and stop recording or taking photos.
photogenic works I don’t think you were paying attention to my video! I show this and explain why I don’t like it! :)
Hi. On DJI Compatibility List Update they are stating the improvment of IR-RSS cable reliability and the USB shutter control on Sony Cameras.

Designguide.tv ridiculous!
So ... you're saying it's heavy? Very helpful, thanks.
Great vid as always! I wonder if my FS5 would be the right weight & shape to make the most of this? Then theres the potential Shogun of course...

I love classical musical music and in this video it is amaizinly used. Thanks so much.
Very good review, Philip! Gonna have to pick this one up.
Nice end shot! Credits: 75% Sarah, 25% Philip :-)
Definitely considering investing in something like this. Looks like it does the job.
Awesome work as usual Philip!
Totally epic review. Inspiring photography, music, editing, charming model and host. Your comment at 28:00 made me laugh out loud. Thank you!
Try using the camera control cable from your Zhiyun. It's not a regular micro usb cable but it looks like one.
Gabriel Contreras its not a cable issue. That would be too easy. It’s a software issue.
Philip Bloom Ah, gotcha.
Philip I really like the contents of your channel. It's great you share the views and the work of a pro. Would be super cool if you could post some tutorial on youtube on how you make movies, how you edit in post etc... Anyway thanks for your videos and keep posting ;)

Andrew Denis Percy is the soppiest thing ever!
8:45 We are very happy too you included that particular slowmo shot ;)
Alexander Mustermann you like that one?
What an amazing review! Thanks for sharing
Al Diaz thanks very much!
Followup question: What was the lapel mic you were using? The pickup, sensitivity, clarity and tonal range was excellent!

awesome as always mr PB, curious to know which auto focus setting are you using on the a7iii, centre lock AF?
Luke Sheehan wide I think
Love the military theme music and foley- Awesome Intro!!
cheers!
Love your work- the simple style of storytelling using minimal gear is what motivated me to get into videography. Hope you keep making awesome stories
That intro ♥
This review is, quite simply, a masterpiece!
No me convencia ningún video de los test de Ronin - S , hasta que vi este... hasta te hace soñar :¨v buen video.
Your videos are always excellent, thank you! Just would really like to know your thoughts on the GH5 and why you prefer the Sony's over it.
ozzcar1 thanks. I don’t like the image. The sensor is a quarter the size of my Sony cameras too.
You should review the pilotfly adventurer. Lighter 7lb payload smaller and Full Sony controll. I have my roninS on pre-order but just found the pilotfly and not sure what to do.
Nick Minderman problem is getting one. I can’t afford to buy these gimbals just to review them
I have just purchased this gimbal.
Hey Phillip- amazing and useful review as ever! What settings in terms of motion were you using in the test footage?
EWCvisuals thanks. What do you mean?
Philip Bloom no worries! When you go into the app did you just use the default settings where you can change deadband, speed, sensitivity? Also did you change any motor settings at all? Just interested to see how you worked with it!
what is an instruction manual? I've never heard of it before.
That's what I always do too ! I read the manuals but tell everyone I don't
Always respect your opinions, Phillip - thanks for the indepth review :)
Great review man. I am curious, has the C200 replaced the FS7 for you?
Highly recommend getting the new Sony MCC cable that DJI released for camera control! Works like a charm :)
Justin Kelsey yeah I had one. Sadly it was stolen along with my Ronin-S last month.
Philip Bloom Oh no! Man, so sorry to hear that...
Justin Kelsey yeah, total crap!
unrelated question to the Ronin S ... but - whats the mic thats on Sarah's camera please. Thank you and as always - love you take on gear reviews.
Too bad you couldn't use the theme of The Great Escape ☹️
The Intro is awesome! :D
Wow, single guy, what an ending LMAO. Good review Phillip, keep them coming....(cough)!
Hi Phillip. Do we still use camera body stabilisation and lens stabilisation? Or is it best to turn these off if using gimble? Thanks
